Friend and Enemy!!! There are those weeks you will hate her dearly, but she is still a good idea to have! I had to put mine away as I found myself weighing WAY too often. This is pretty common. If you can only weigh once a week or even every two it's best. And don't forget to take measurements. On the days where you hate your scale, you'll be glad you have your measurements to compare!! And congrats!!! Only 16 days to go!! Woohoo!

What ElfiePoo ^ said. If you pay attention to your post-surgery diet, you may end up dropping your diabetes meds. I was diagnosed Type 2 a couple of years ago and put on Metformin and Amaryl. As I dieted during the ramp up for my banding, I was taken off Amaryl due to good blood numbers, then my Metformin dose was cut in half post-surgery, and as of last week I am now off all diabetes and blood pressure meds. Banding is not a magic bullet - you still have to eat right, but the band gave me the edge I needed to get the ball rolling.

I'm down another 3 pounds this week! Making myself get on the treadmill everyday is finally paying off. I also noticed at softball practice last night that catching grounders was a lot easier than it was in the beginning. Plus not being so winded is excellent!!! I feel the old me emerging. I'm starting to remember who I used to be. I've missed the old me. I know I have a long way to go, but feeling better about myself is the first step to reaching my goals. It's so nice to be so active again. Before surgery I used to dream about running and playing sports. I would wake up so disappointed that it was only a dream. For the first time in many, many years I'm enjoying summer. Well, at least as much as you can enjoy summer in Texas. Life is good! :cursing:

Hi everybody. One week out of surgery, and my nutritionist recommended I maintain the clear liquid diet for two more weeks. I came across this clear protein drink, incredibly delicious and does not cause me any problems. I just find an issue balancing with drinking protein and drinking water. Anybody else struggling with that? And does anybody have any recommendations regarding how I can maintain the balance? Thanks!

Hello All, and Happy Friday!! I was banded last Tuesday the 12th. I had 1 week of thick Soups, pudding, etc....anything that you can pour. I did fine that first week, I didn't have any pain at all, and I was good with eating. I am now able to eat anything I want, but the Dr. told me to start with softer foods, egg salad etc... Now, when I started to eat regular foods, my problem is that my brain is still not understanding that I can't eat all the foods that I want. I am having a really hard time with only putting a little bit of food on my plate. I think this is because I have been a BIG eater all my life. All of my plates have been filled to the brim with food. So now I am having problems with stopping myself from eating too much. So, I guess I just need to know if anyone has had this problem too. That it takes a little while for your brain to follow your stomach. Because right now, I feel horrible. I feel horrible that I can't stop myself from eating too much. I feel horrible that I can't feel satisfied with 1/2 cup of food on the plate. And this has already caused me to think that I have failed the band. That I am not working it like I should. I know, it has been 10 days since the surgery, so I shouldn't be too hard on myself. But it is hard to sit here and wanting to slap myself silly because my stomach is too full and I should have stopped eating when I felt that it started to fill up....but instead I kept eating, thinking..."well, I hardly ate anything..."!!!! I feel so irritated with myself. Okay, I will pull myself up and start again. I have lost 11 pounds so far, so I will just have to keep it fresh in my mind that I have to MEASURE!!! That seams to be the problem I have....I have to measure my food....THEN WALK AWAY from the kitchen! Sorry for the long rant....just feeling scared and stupid for not listening to my body. But I will do everything I can to work this band! Did I tell you I lost 11 pounds!!! :w00t:

Protein After Surgery
Wheetsin replied to iowachiefsfan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can definitely lose weight on fewer than 40 or 50 gm Protein a day, or else no one would ever starve to death. It's about the weight you're losing. The protein intake goals are about supporting healthy fat loss, not just weight loss, which would otherwise include loss of lean muscle mass. The guidelines per my nurtitionist are 60gm - 70gm. Call yours & see what their requirements are, they vary. The most I've been able to do is 60s, and just a few times. It's much easier for me to actually eat the protein than drink eat - Protein drinks sit very heavy for me, but I try. I'm only 7 weeks out & still trying to dance around capacity issues. If you do things that require more protein, you will need to increase. And yes, the 50s, 60s, 70s you're hearing are lifelong daily minimums. Type of protein matters too. They are not created equal. whey isolate is one of the better ones, plan whey works. Bunches & bunches of types out there. I just typed this earlier: generally if protein comes in packaging that looks like a test tube or a vibrator, you don't want it. -
Today was my first post- up from surgery 12 days ago. I still can not walk or stand for long. No pain just winded every time I try walk, I can't even stand to take a shower or even brush my teeth. The Doctor sent me straight to the ER. I had a Cat Scan and X-ray. All good. No blood clots. All good, but why am I soooo out of breath? They gave no answers. I have a follow up appointment with my Dr. at end of week. Anyone have this happen to them?

I'm almost 2.5 months out, and before surgery I honestly didn't have acid reflux much, so it sucks that after the hiatal hernia repair and sleeve I'm having it almost all day every day.. Probably a month ago I called the surgeon's office telling them I was having AR issues: they said to try pepcid complete. It worked for a while, but eventually I was having to take one in the morning and one in the evening. The past couple of weeks the AR has been getting worse between the two pepcid tablet doses so I called the doctor's office again. They recommended I try nexium but the pharmacy I went to was out so I talked to the pharmacist who recommended zantac because it would work faster. It worked for fast relief but not long-term. Should I follow through with giving the nexium a chance? Or tell my doctor I need something stronger? When I get hungry the acid really starts acting up and I can't always eat right away. But then when I go to eat, I can only manage one or two bites before I feel nauseous and unable to eat. I'm not full but I don't feel hungry, just sick for a while. Then the hunger eventually comes back and the acid is torture all over again! It's a miserable cycle, so I'm open to all suggestions at this point.

My husband told his boss that he'd be working from home for at least two weeks after my surgery. My surgeon and the nursing staff told us several times that even though this is an out patient surgery, it IS a major surgery and that I need to take it easy. When I told my surgeon that my son wanted to know how long we have to wait before we can go swimming. He very pointedly told me that there will be NO swimming or any other heavy / strenuous activity until he releases me. He made it clear that he would begin making these decisions at my 2 week post-op appointment. So. Yes. you over did it. You need to sit back and relax while your other family members take care of things. That includes driving.

It is amazing to me the freedom I feel not to have to think about what diet I will start on Monday morning!! I feel so free!! Monday morning would come ... I would start a new diet... Would stay on it a week... Maybe less... And of course cheat and hate myself later. A vicious circle!! I was driving yesterday thinking how free I feel not having to think about diets anymore!!! I was sleeved August 27....almost four months... 63 pounds down ... And 43 inches!! #freedom

Yes, I am one week out...... expect bruising, I was shocked by the amount of bruising. And make sure you have everything at home ready.... several options... it IS true that some of the things you liked before surgery you may not like post op, only six days and I am turned off by a favorite just two weeks ago, keep us posted! Also post op gravity is your worst enemy, but once I figured out HOW to get up and down in a less painful way, ahh much better. -

I called the surgery center at the beginning of January and met with the surgeon in early February. I finished the four monthly stupid insurance required nutrition classes ("did you know french fries are unhealthy???") a few weeks ago and I still don't have a date for my surgery. All elective surgeries were on hold until April due to COVID so everyone whose surgery was cancelled or delayed has to be scheduled first. I had lost 39 lbs but then I got scared that my BMI would go too low if my surgery was going to be not for a few more months so when I visited my family I threw a few food funerals and gained 3 lbs and now I'm so angry at myself. I'm back on track now, but the weight isn't coming off. The surgery center isn't answering my questions at all at this point and I'm so frustrated. I know they're understaffed, and when the admin has called me back she's been so apologetic and so nice and helpful. I don't want to start over again, and everyone has been so nice and helpful at every interaction, it's just that I feel like I have so many unanswered questions and I want to just do this already!

What on earth is happening?
TheProfessor replied to TheProfessor's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Julie norton Thanks you so much for responding. This is a little unnerving, feeling hungry so suddenly after such long periods of satiety. Today I've eaten very little and I'm feeling ok - not as ravenous as the past few days. Good to know that you have been at this for years, and experience some weeks where you are hungrier than others. I wonder why that is?? My cycle just ended, so I'm left wondering if perhaps it might be something hormonal. AS for eating more Protein at lunch, I've been eating SO much protein - like almost nothing but! Smoked mussels, chicken salad, mixed greens, a tiny amount of dressing, no carbs, no sugars. Thanks for checking in with me and offering our thoughts. Very helpful indeed! -
Weight loss after gastric sleeve - 2 months out
Arabesque replied to Icey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You’ve done amazingly well so far. Congratulations. Ok, breathe. Weight loss is never a straight downward line. It goes up & down, plateaus, goes faster at times, slower at others. As long as your general trend is downward you’re golden. We all have a natural fluctuation too from hormonal changes, water retention, constipation/diarrhoea. It’s just how our bodies function. Don’t let the scales rule your life. You know best how to manage it - weigh every day or less frequently. I weighed every day until I stabilised now I weigh every second or third day but that’s what I need to keep myself honest & on track. Don’t forget to that what you weigh on your scales will likely be different to your doctors. Different scales, you’re weighed at different times, after eating/not eating, dressed or not, etc. Also scales are not 100% accurate all the time. A few weeks ago my scales said I weighed 136.2kg & that was after I changed the batteries. It initially read 151kg - about three times my weight. Yes I did have heart palpitations for a second or two. Since it wasn’t the batteries, it may have been the days of extremely high humidity or that it was just time they went to God. I bought a new set … which weigh about a pound heavier than the old ones. ☹️ -
Today is 6 months since surgery for me. Everything has went pretty damn smooth so far. No complications, no insanity, just nice easy weightloss...thank god. I'm now off all meds (diabetes, high BP, Cholestorol) and I feel much better. In my before pic I was wearing a 3x sweater and size 48 jeans. In my photo from today 1x top and 38 jeans..Some days I look in the mirror and see the old me, and some are a little easier. I think I've always kinda pictured myself as the really big guy even when I wasn't close to that weight..I'm not sure what goal weight I really have, I just want to keep doing what I'm doing and when my body is ready to stop I will be happy. I've been going to the gym 2-3 days a week, and have regained some muscle and strength that I have lost through the years of my lazy life style. If you are on the fence about surgery feel free to hit me up with any questions because I would love to help anybody find the happiness that I have found being freed from all of this excess weight. Not the best news..feeling defeated. Need Advice
LisaLou30 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last week I had completed my pre surgery requirements for my insurance company and was told by my surgeon's office that they would be submitting for approval. However this morning I received a call from them that they have decided not to submit and will not until end of November. My surgeon feels that I have not lost enough weight and wants me to attend another NUT group appointment and lose 8 pounds. I had been working out 5-6 times a week and eating 1200-1400 calories and losing weight fast however 2 weeks ago by foot starting hurting horribly so I went to the doctor and found out that I have a stress fracture and will be in boot for 4-5 weeks. Since then I have been doing upper body weights but I am not losing any weight. My surgeon said that I need to lose 8 pounds by November 13th so that we can get everything set up for beginning of December but if not it will be pushed out until January because he takes the last 2 weeks of December off. I am an commercial insurance agent and can not afford to take time off in January. I am not giving up but just feeling a little defeated today. Any suggestions on what exercises I can do to help? Do I need to change my calories? Thanks for listening! -
Not the best news..feeling defeated. Need Advice
docbree replied to LisaLou30's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon requires each patient to lose 10% of their weight prior to surgery. In fact, if someone shows up for surgery and hasn't done so, he has been known to send them home. In most cases (depending on your insurance) this pre-op weight loss will not keep you from getting approved - in fact, it shows them than you can stick with a weight loss plan. Weight loss before surgery is very important, primarily to shrink your liver. This makes the surgery quicker and less risky. Exercise isn't an efficient way to lose weight. Decreasing calories is the only way to lose weight quickly. I think a trial of the pre-op diet is a great idea. I still have about 10 pounds to lose before my surgery - and I'm completely stuck. I'm going to try the pre-op diet for a week or so myself. Good luck! -

Weight loss after gastric sleeve - 2 months out
SmolGojira replied to Icey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Those gains aren't anything to worry about as our bodies always gain and lose weight depending on all kinds of things, and it's almost always water. Some weeks I can go up 6lbs in water weight. Which is why I think it's best to check once a week, and if you have a gain which keeps trending up over a month+, chat with your dietician. -
I have been having a lot of GI problems over the last several month or so. The pain became unbearable this week, so I went to my dr and she thinks it's due to artificial sweetners. As I think about my diet, much of what I eat has these sweeteners in them. I will do anything to avoid the pain and bloating caused by the artificial sweetener, so I am looking for ideas on how to revamp my diet. I could care less about eliminating most of it, but I think I'm really worried about protein shakes because they are my go to item. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
