My Lymphedema Doc told me to stop massages to avoid doing more harm in case the therapist didn't have experience. So far, I know of no massage therapist in my area w experience in this area. Staying positive and hoping w exercise/weight loss, it will get better. I have a mild condition--caught very early.

Yes, my weight does this as well! My weight is up and down ... up and down the same 3 lbs and then BAM, I'll drop 3-4 lbs over night and keep it off permanently. I had to get an unfill yesterday because I hadn't been able to eat correctly for the last 2 weeks. My body was stuck and going into starvation mode. I was able to eat a chicken salad last night and then I weighed this morning and I lost a few lbs... I think because my body finally got nourishment.

TOM made a huge difference for me as well. I have always lost in fits and starts throughout the banding journey. The only time time I lost regularly was the first several weeks. My weight loss graph shows plateau, dip, plateau, dip and repeats repeatedly throughout banding. The only difference now that I am pretty much at goal is that the changes are a lot slower and the losses smaller. I always had a steady decline a week or sometimes more right after a new fill. Right now I have been holding steady for about of month . . . but I am half unfilled for being preggers and I went on a three week vacation in the middle east where I ate whatever I wanted. Even with all that, I don't seem to be gaining for which I am very grateful.

I never loose any weight 2 weeks before my TOM. I always loose my weight the 2 weeks after.

1-2nd month breakdowns

Selfish and psycho are not words that come to mind. I can totally understand the impatience! Maybe someday someone will invent the medical technology that will allow us to lose all the excess weight overnight. But for now, you lost 32.5 lbs in 1 month exactly. Say those words aloud! 32.5 lbs in 1 month! That's absolutely incredible! 32.5 lbs. Gone! Forever! Congratulations! Just keep after it, and enjoy the ride. People who see you every day might not notice as much because you're losing consistently and they see you all the time. People who you haven't seen in a while will have their minds blown -
Hi everyone. I haven't been on here for awhile. I'm having some symptoms that are really scaring me and would like some advice. Let me give you some history - I was banded July 2, 2008. I have lost 65 lbs since my pre-op diet started. I haven't been filled in one year because I have been tight and can't even eat in the morning. I had emergency surgery to correct a flipped port after being filled way too tight. I was stuck over 100 times by the surgeon under fluro to avoid surgery. It was incredibly unsuccessful - I couldn't swallow my own saliva and was vomitting every few minutes until they put me under. They couldn't put me under until they gave me meds in my IV to stop all secretions (so I would stop vomitting). Given the difficulty I had, I'll be honest, I haven't really watched what I've eaten, but my portions of everything are very small. It's almost that the difficulty helped me give up. I haven't put on any weight. Over the last month I've had some anxiety issues with panic attacks. During this time I've been written out of work by my Doctor. I've been able to eat more frequently, but still very small portions. I've had acid reflux this month (never before) and mostly at night. This is accompanied by pain in my chest and around my back. It's hard to sometimes distinguish this pain from a panic attach. I'm starting to think, however, that this may be a slipped band. My surgeon is not exactly the nicest person on the planet so I have been avoiding him. I know that's not right and will be making an appointment, but would like to hear from some of you who have had a slipped band. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Diet Guidelines for Lap Band Patients ?
xavier replied to BeautyLarue's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I was told protein grams should equal half of your ideal weight. So if ideal weight is 120, you need 60 grams a day. If I eat my protein first, at least 20gms at each of three meals, I dont have room to get myself in trouble with sugar ,carbs etc. Protein is the only think I (sort of) count. -
You probably would know if your band slipped. Last year all during the week I was fine. I woke up on Thursday morning, and it hurt bad even to swallow my saliva. I thought it was just me. It didn't go away, and I had reflux off and on so I went to the doctor Friday. He took all my fluid out. I went back later for fluro, and it had prolapsed. Thought it would correct itself, but it didn't. I had got down to my goal weight, but have gained a little back since then. I had mine repositioned last Thursday.

Type 2 Diabetes ... how's that working for you?
Phranp posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was diagnosed with A-Typical Type 2 Diabetes in January of 2007. I was feeling really sick, exhausted, and all the other symptoms. I finally went to the doctor and was immediately sent to the emergency room. My blood sugar was 917. I left the hospital 4 days later with insulin and metformin. Within a week I was taking only a third of what I was originally prescribed and off insulin within a month. Ultimately, I was taking 1000 mg of Metformin 2 X a day. Even that got to be a little too much and I went to 500 in the morning and 1000 at night. Anyway, I called my endo a couple of days after my surgery and he said I could stop taking metformin asap. I waited about a month and a half to stop completely. I continue to check my blood sugar and it has been very good since I was about 20 lbs down. Here's my issue, - and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this - my blood sugar has been too low on a number of occasions since I stopped taking my meds. It usually happens when I change my diet to lose more weight. My numbers aren't crazy low (low 70's to 80), but I don't feel well at all when I am in the 70's (never did) and I get really shaky. Anyone else experiencing low blood suger after being in "diabetic remission"? -
Type 2 Diabetes ... how's that working for you?

I was wondering this too! I was on 1500 Metformin and 100 Januvia before the surgery. Right now I am only taking 500mg of Riomet (liquid Metformin) a day and I'm doing fine. Most of the time when I test I'm at 90-110. I can't believe it! I haven't lost that much weight, and even when I tried to "eat right" before it never kept my numbers this low. I'm curious, but definitely not complaining! lol -
I'm ready, I'm committed...Let's GO!
Jennifer Newman posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all. Just found this site today and I've been reading, reading, reading. I will be having Bypass on December 26th and here is my story... I have been heavy my entire life - literally. I as a 9lb 16oz baby, a chubby kid, a chunky teen, an obese college student and morbidly obese as an adult. I've done almost every diet known to man (and a few I made up along the way). I have been successful in taking weight off previously (as much as 92 pounds in 2003) but have never found success in making it to goal and keeping the weight off. At age 40, I hit a cross roads in my life - I was tired of being fat, tired of not being able to participate in activities, tired of wearing the biggest uniform in my chorus and tired of being tired. My insurance would not cover surgery and had enough money in the bank to cover it or grad school (a life long dream to return to school and get my Masters of Music in Voice). I choose school. Two years later I was in a new job and lo & behold, surgery is covered in our insurance. I knew that was confirmation that I made the right choice. So why surgery? The one constant in my life is that I have never experienced the sensation of feeling satisfied with the amount of food I eat. I know what it feels like to over eat but have no sensation that tells me to stop. Whether I eat 3oz of food or 23 oz of food - I feel the same when I'm finished. Having surgery will give me the tool I need to learn how to eat what is needed to live. I can't wait to Eat to Live instead of Living to Eat. I know I have other food issues that I need to address during my journey. My addiction to sweets ends now. I will no longer be held slave to my cravings -- my will is greater than my eyes! It's time for a lifestyle change -- I'm ready - I'm committed... Let's go! Jennifer -
People say they notice I am loosing weight. When I tell them I had lap band surgery, you would think I just told them I walk on water. Their so in AW of this surgery. Is there anyone in my area who has had this surgery?

I had my surgery one month ago today, and here are my basic stats so far: 1. I've lost 30 pounds from my highest point this fall 2. I've lost 14 pounds since my surgery date 3. I take in 700-900 calories a day 4. Two weeks into working out again-- about 4 times a week Overall, this has been a really positive experience. I was very lucky and had no complications and very little pain after surgery. I'm tolerating food pretty well-- I'm just not hungry! (Which was the point, right?) Maybe I've been reading too many astounding weight loss stories from all of you, but I am a little disappointed that I've only lost 14 pounds since surgery. I had hoped to lose 20 in the first month. But, I truly can't complain. That's not too bad considering that I had a 2 week stall in the middle of that. (I literally lost 2 pounds weeks 2 and 3 post op.) I would not have lost this weight without the sleeve. And as everyone says, it didn't go on overnight, and it's not going to come off that way, either. On another note, I signed up for my first 5K. It's 4/20, and I've started a 10 week couch to 5K program. I'm currently on week two. Working out is harder than it had been before, though, I have to say. I think it's because of my diminished calorie intake, but it takes a lot out of me. But I'm working through it, and it's starting to get a lot easier again. And, the loss of 30 pounds has really been good for my knees. I don't have as much pain as I used to after working out. So my next goals? 1. 215 2. size 16 3. Enjoying running (I really, really, really want to enjoy this. So far, not so much.)

It's quite a headtrip isnt it? I rememeber pre banding, all of the last year I went on shopping sprees where I bought size 16 clothes to stockpile. I bought a few 18's too which I am wearing now. In my mind, 16's (US 14) were tiny tiny tiny and they represented my goal weight. I have to say I think sizing has changed an awful lot since I was last a 16, since I'll be wearing those clothes in another 10kg! But I cant get my head around it - I try them on and they slip on easily - just cant get the zippers done up yet, lol. Before I couldnt even get them past my thighs. But I cant reconcile I'll be a 16 but I will still be overweight because I know they'll fit by 90kg which is still 20kg over my goal weight. So what, I'm going to be a 14 or even a 12? Last time I was a size 12 I was honestly 10 years old!!!!! But you just look the same to yourself however many pounds down dont you? You cant see that you've shrunk apart from when you catch sight of yourself suddenly or unexpectedly.

If you don't object, may I ask you starting weight-most are less than mine, 367#. Some are ALOT less than me!!! I also heard that if you wear "compression type" garments (like spanx) it helps to fight gravity and saggy! Do you think there is any truth to this? -- my doc says" maybe--try it"! -

I have been very blessed with my weight loss. It has been a total shock to me since I have never been able to loss weight in my life! I told my hubby when we decided to do this that if I was going to do something this drastic, I was going to make it work. I have been working really hard and have seen wonderful results! It's not always easy, but always worth it! -
I just don't understand why I feel I must eat, when I know there is junk in the house. I have the most uncontrolable feeling that I must eat it till its gone. I have been fighting it all day. I know that I don't need that junk, but I can't seem to help myself. I really thought that the desire to eat would go away, but it hasn't. I could just be bored, but don't think so. I could just be lazy, but not all the time. What is with the desire to eat and eat and eat. I know I must be trying to fill up a hole that is empty in my life, but what is that hole. That hole is big enough to suck in the whole ocean if I got close enough. Why is it when I can't sleep I think that eating something is going to put me sleep. Is that left over from being a child when you parents would feed you and put to bed. I really have to get serious about this I need figure all this out. I need to lose more weight so I feel better. I know that I'm already feeling better, but I want to feel great. I'm going to go to Texas in October and I would love to be at least 20lb smaller. It would make the air plane ride so much better. I guess that is my goal for now is to lose 20 lbs by October 17. That a good 10 weeks and thats only 2 lbs a week, thats not that much to ask for is it. I must excercise more, I did the peddle thing last nite for 10 minutes, I will try to work up to at least 30 minutes per day in the next two weeks. I need some good arm excersise also, maybe my bat wings will go away some. I just hate the big bump at the top of my elbows that seem to just hang out there. I will have to work hard to have them disappear. Oh well today has been pretty good. I just have to write more here to keep my mood upbeat. I have to remember my goals for the next couple of months.

Freaking out...what if he can't get to my port again?
travelinsnorkel replied to travelinsnorkel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I saw my doc Friday and his answer was lets give it a week and see if you lose weight and it gets looser. It is getting a little looser, but I am still scared that there is something wrong with my port. I guess I'll just have to have him take a look with the xray. I think he is trying to save me money because I'm self pay, but I don't mind paying if it will put me at ease! I think I might call him tomorrow to see if I can get the xray done to make sure nothing is wrong. -
Well I have some restriction. Not a whole lot, but it is a start. I want to wait until I'm completely stalled before I schedule another fill. It seems like the only time I manage to lose weight is the week I'm on liquids after a fill. Although I must admit, that I only stayed on liquids for about three days. I had my measuring day at Curves a few days ago. I'd lost 20 lbs. since I joined and they were all asking me what was my secret. So I pulled up my shirt and showed 'em my scars. Then I erased my name off the "Brag Board" 'cuz I'd really rather people didn't keep bringing it up. It makes me feel very awkward. I've never been good at accepting compliments & praise. I'm really very self-deprecating. Most of the time. Here are my stats from the Curves measuring day: Bust 49 in. -3 in. Waist 47in. -4 in. Abdomen 52 in. -3 in. Hips 50 in. -3 in. Thighs 28 in. -2 in. Arms 16.5 in. -2 in. Body fat 42.6% -1.9% (for stats from my 1st. Curves measuring day, see entry #24)

How long before you loved your Band?
Humming Bird replied to delopez3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've loved it from day one. The band is doing the trick for me. I would have never taken off this much weight without it and that was the point of getting banded. Now I am confident I will take off the rest of my excess weight and keep it off. ........Love the band!
