    Post Operation Pain

I'm taking two weeks off. I'm 10 days post-op and started back walking almost immediately. I feel great and my energy level is fine. I'm still on full liquids, getting plenty of protein (Premier Protein shakes) so that's got to be why I feel good.
  2. Why can't you go back and get your fill early? Why do you have to wait until March? I started booking my next appt 2 weeks after my fill in case I didn't feel restriction. I just had my 3rd fill, 5.5cc in a 10 cc band and now feel restriction. I will see how it goes and if I am still feeling restriction next week I will cancel my appt and make it for a later date.
  3. Hello. I am 16 months post-op and 9 weeks pregnant. I refused to take the sugar drink that the doctors usually test you for gestational diabetes (GD) as was instructed by my surgeon. Now the doctors are having me take my blood twice a day for a week now, a week at 24 weeks and a week at 30 weeks. I have to take my blood when I am fasting for 8-10 hours and then again 2 hours after my biggest meal. I am having a problem with my sugar levels when I take my blood during the fasting part. The doc wants my sugar levels to be under 95 and so far I have tested over 95 everyday with the exception of one day where it was 88. When I test myself 2 hours after my biggest meal I always come in under the 125 that the doc wants me to be under. Has anyone else come across this issue with being over the target numbers? Has anyone else had or have GD? I'd love to hear about someone else's situation. ~Thanks!
  4. Hi @Dee2938 I know that's frustrating, especially because folks here seem to lose 10 lbs a week.... I would say you may be eating too many calories or perhaps carbs. i have always been calorie sensitive. Even at 300 plus pounds I ate 800 calories and less than 20 carbs to maintain that weight. I'm a week post op now but I typically don't go over 350 calories a day and stay under 20 carbs. Maybe try that and see if it works for you? Even with that diet I've only lost 6 lbs.... October 1 I weighed 284, October 9 I weigh 278. Not a big loss..... I'm a slow loser too......

    Clothing while losing

Stretchy stuff for casual clothes (like leggings suggested above). For dressier clothes, I've found an A-line pleated skirt with a stretchy waist. Skirts in general are easier to deal with while losing weight, IMO - they are much easier to take in. I've paid about $10 to take in a skirt, whereas for jeans, it cost me around $20. Besides, with pants, you also have to worry about how they fit around the thigh area, whereas with the skirt, it's just a matter of waist circumference. So tailoring things is another option, it will generally be cheaper than buying new items.

    stretching your pouch?

Good info....I have not heard about people gaining their wt back...any information out there that anyone wants to share. In our nutrition class they did say that at the two year mark some people gain 10-20 # and that we should make sure it doesn't go above 10#

    Easy Way Out

It's all born out of the fact that most people still believe that diet and exercise are all it takes. Most people have lost 10 or 20 pounds at some point in their life using this method. They don't realize that if you're trying to lose 100 pounds or more, there is a very slim chance that it will work the same way. We all know that losing that first 20 pounds is easy. Then suddenly your body puts a stop to the weight loss. It's not just will power, your body puts up a fight to maintain the weight. And if you do lose the weight, it's even tougher to keep it off.
  8. I signed onto My Chart for a message. Posted was my August 10 surgery date and my surgical pre-op appt. Aug 5. My surgery notification (the date I already knew) said procedure performed by Dr. Rosenthal (the one I know) and Dr. Ganga. I had two doctors (I didn't even know) do my egd, so I should assume they'll be more than one doctor doing my sleeve. I couldn't find any info on him, other than he is a MD at Cleveland Clinic. From their site, I find he is in the Residency surgical program. My biggest fear when going into a teaching hospital is that I'll be handed over to a student. Is this common in a hospital clinic setting? I'm thinking I'm going to make sure I physically see Dr. Rosenthal before they put me under. Although to be honest, Dr. Rosenthal wears the thickest glasses I've ever seen. I did ask his nurse about his eyesight and she assured me its fine. Am I just getting too picayune and just chill out and be happy insurance is paying.

    Desperate for protien

I did not have any protein the first 10 days. It's pretty common and my nutritionist was more concerned with me getting my fluids in. In order to feel a little better I would have apple juice 3 oz in the am and for lunch. Once I could have yogurts and puréed foods I was so much bettet
  10. I am 10 weeks Post -Op and still can't eat eggs, cottage cheese bread of any type and barley can eat any meat and if I do get to eat meat I only can eat a couple of bites of a grilled chicken strip only no red meat or pork and then I'm full . I can eat yogurt and a half of a protein shake .I was wondering if anyone else has or had this problem of having a hard time eating at 12 weeks out ? I'm already down 60 lbs which I'm happy about but I would like to get more of a food intake. TYI

    Hello From St Louis

I do have a primary care physician but I never once said anything to them about my process. Actually - I still have not contacted them and I was banded on November 10th. I really like Dr Eagon and his staff! It was a 7 month journey for me but I am 6 weeks out and down 13 lbs which is the most weight I have lost in 6 weeks in 10 years. good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask!

How long were you off work?

I had my vsg on 9/25, hopefully I can go back after 3 weeks. I drive school bus and to return to work I have to pull a 125 pound bag, so I'm unsure. First post op appointment is 10/4. We shall see what the doc says Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

How long were you off work?

Hi I had my surgery on a Friday and could have gone back to work the following Tuesday, but I had a JP drain. Went back 10 days after surgery. Energy level was incredible and had no pain. I have a desk job.
  14. This is my 1st post-op post!!! So far so good. Surgery was completed about 10:00, and I was in my room by 11:00. Gas pain in chest and left shoulder at first, but it's pretty much gone by now. Some soreness on my left side where they pulled my tummy out, but no significant pain to speak of. 1st leak test went well - that stuff I had to drink was NASTY!!! Now I'm working on my 1st cup of Water - best h2o I've ever had!!! No nausea or discomfort!!!!
  15. I"m curious about this as I"m hoping that us bandsters (or soon to be bansters) don't have to get fills/unfills for the rest of our lives. I mean....heck...what if the economy gets really bad (and you have to travel 1-2 hours to get a fill or emergency unfill)? Although us Americans take it for granted that we can easily get around....and money is easier to get (compared to many countries around the world) ....but what if a major economic collapse happens (in the next 5-10 years) and now your stuck relying on these fills and unfills...(fill cost rises due to a dollar devaluation) and you have to travel a decent way to just to get a fill. If the dollar devalues (like many high level econimists predict)...gas prices could be $10/gallon. I know this is a rare occurance and a hypothetical scenario...(and many here will try to critisize this thinking......not to mention the majority have incapability to think long-term and potential realities down he road) but when considering getting the lapband....one does have to think about potential scenarios like this down the road. P.S. Many here are not trained in world economics and the major media NEVER gives people the reality of where world economics is currently at....but TRUST ME...this could be a real scenario for us bandsters (or soon to be bandsters) down the road.....and must be factored in when making a life altering and life long decision like this. Any thoughts or opinions?
  16. Hello, I would like us to get to know each other, so here's my story... I am 47 yrs old, Married to my wonderful husband Richard for 27 yrs now. I have two awesome sons, Jason 26 and Josh 23. My son Joshua was married last July and they are about to have his first child. The decision to have this surgery was not an easy one for me. I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, acid reflux, sleep apnea and side effects from the diabetes. I have seen people get diabetes complications and have their toes, feet, legs removed. Blindness is also a real possibility. I have nerve damage starting in my feet, and sighs of damage in my eyes. I want to be able to play with my grandchild and enjoy my life as I get older. So...... this is why I made the decision to have the surgery. I was on 3 different meds for my diabetes, including insulin. My surgery was 8 days ago and I am off all the diabetic meds, sleep apnea is gone, blood pressure is better. For now I still take the blood pressure med and the med for cholesterol, but am told I will be off them soon. Each day I feel better and better. I have lost 22 pounds since I saw my surgeon in May. 11 since my surgery on 6/19. I am very pleased with the improvment of my health and am told it will get better in the coming months. I would really like to hear from you. Thanks for reading my story. RanayB

    Second Guessing Surgery!

You're certainly welcome! Folks often become concerned when they read or hear horror stories following surgery. There are risks and there are no guarantees. But I always try to remind everyone that there are approximately 200,000 bariatric surgeries performed every year in the U.S. alone. If you personally heard or read 2,000 horror stories, that would be one percent of the surgeries performed in a single year. The major complication rate (usually defined as requiring re-hospitalization) for gastric bypass is now less than four percent according to a study done by Cleveland Clinic and published day before yesterday. The minor complication rate is less than 15%. And the death rate as the result of surgery is less than one-tenth of one percent. Consider that in conjunction with the other benefits of the surgery outlined in the same study: 40% reduced risk of heart attack over a ten year period 42% reduced risk of stroke over a ten year period 18% drop in the five year risk of death from cardiovascular disease 45% drop in the risk of developing moderate to severe kidney disease over five years 47% drop in the risk of developing circulatory and other complications including diabetic retinopathy (diabetes induced blindness) On average patients lost 60% of their excess weight and had a 61% remission of diabetes The overall risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke or peripheral vascular disease within the next 10 years dropped 27%. All of this research was presented in Atlanta, GA at the 30th Annual Meeting for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) during Obesity Week 2013. http://www.newswise.com/articles/new-cleveland-clinic-study-shows-risk-of-heart-attack-stroke-among-diabetes-patients-significantly-lower-after-gastric-bypass Bottom line - the odds of having a life-changing, successful surgery are overwhelmingly in your favor. And the weight loss is just one of a very long list of benefits.
  18. So this coming August, my band will be 10years old crazy that it's been that long. I've had great weight loss but still haven't lost as much weight as I would like; that being said my doctor suggested having my band removed and considering another WLS......but idk. I'm kinda on the fence. And I was so nervous when I got the band put but nothing I know how to "deal with it" and unfortunately eating sauce with my Protein has become normal to keep from vomiting. Any advice? Suggestions? If I do get it removed I think I'd go with the sleeve as it has less complications..... I'm just so confused right now and quite disappointed that I haven't met my goal weight and it's been 10 years.... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Big Mistake!?

Give it some time - you just had surgery 3 days ago! I had the neck and shoulder pain for about 7-10 days after surgery and it would lessen as each day passed. I had surgery in March and I've lost about 30 pounds since then - but what is the best is that I am out of the 'food fog' I had been living in for years! It was 100% worth it!
  24. I was banded on April 10, 2007. I have lost 31 pounds so far. It has been slow but easy. I am so glad that I did it for myself.:clap2:
