    Pre-Op Vegan Diet Plan

I met with my nutritionist this week and he gave me my Pre-op diet plan. I thought I would share since I haven’t been able to find a vegan plan on this website. 7-14 days prior to surgery The following diet will provide you with approximately 1000 calories and should meet your daily Protein requirements. The purpose of this diet is to deplete your glycogen (fat) stores, which in turn will help the liver to shrink and make your weight lost operation easier and safer. lean meat substitutes (70 grams protein) 2-3 cups non starchy vegetables Broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, carrots, tomato, green Beans, asparagus, radish, pickles, mushrooms May use fat free low calorie dressing or hummus 3 tsp fat Olive oil, canola oil, Grapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flaxseed oil, Walnuts, Hemp Oil or Sesame oil Calorie Free liquids Water, propel, crystal light, fruit2O, plain coffee, plain tea Protein Supplement Protein shake Garden of Life Raw Protein Beyond Organic Protein Formula I’ve already started this diet even though I don’t have a date set. I am having a hard time getting in 1,000 calories.

NO energy at 1 month post op

My energy is getting worse at 1 month after surgery. I'm taking my b12 and multi vitamin, I drink an average of 40 ounces of water and average 60-70 grams of protein. But by lunch time it's torture to stay awake. I have so much I need to do! Any ideas? I thought about energy drinks or even possibly asking my endocrinology doctor if its ok for me to take the diet pills he prescribed last year.
  4. Some bandster friendly food bargains I saw today. At Costco through Sunday, Chobani fruited yogurt $1.25 off 12 count (.75 which for my areas is a great price). At Demoulas MA/NH grocery chain Pure Protein brand bars (20 g size) 2/1.00.

    Durban, South Africa

I would love to know which doctors you used in RSA, and which medical aid you used? I am looking into Discovery's Comprehensive plan at the moment. Pricey but i believe that the surgery is covered. Any information would be awesome. Recovery time, time off work etc. I originally wanted to go for Lapband but this is no longer an option, so i am going for RNY. So i have had to chuck out so much of my research, and start all over.

    Starting pre op diet!

Hang in there and do it. Its so worth it. I won't lie, you will go through some bad days where you might want eat your couch, my bad days were 5-7. But on the day of the surgery, I found out I lost 24 pounds in the pre-opt liquid phase. Mix up the day if you can. See if you can find high Protein low fat smoothies, my nutritionist let me have one a day and that made all the difference.

    Restriction but still very hungry...??

I went through the same thing. It is better to be a little looser to get your solid protein in. You can go 3-4 hours if you get your solid protein in. Protein shakes for me were typically and hour or so.

    Battling the demons

It's 9pm, had a good dinner but the demon cravings are creeping in the dark recesses of my mind, taunting me. telling me I didnt eat that much today I need a munch, a little salt, a little sweet, a little chocolate, a little crunch. I go to the frig, what is edible without much effort?? carrots - naw no flavor, sugur free Jello? well only as a last resort. Protein drink? YUK! ---cheese stick! yum! 2 bites and its a distant memory.....The demons are in full swing now twisting my stomach in knots, gotta find something, gotta find something. I'm NOT really hungry cupboard doors are flying open - close - open again did I miss something, gotta eat, no, YES!...STOP!.... BUT wait!.... AHA! in the pantry a half a bag of chips! not a wise choice, but hey I can eat just one chip and I will be OK. You all know the rest of this story, and the remorse and guilt. to bad there isn't a morning after pill for overeating. Yes the demons are always there waiting in the shadows for your guard to drop a fraction of an inch and they jump in and attack. My band is right now like a dull sword. I can beat them with it but to hack and slice them out I need it sharpened, I need the sweet spot. 2nd fill is next week, with one fill I have 5cc's and no significant restriction. I guess that is why it's called bandster HELL. battle ON! we will win the war! it's a process it's a process it's a process it's a process it's a process it's a process it's a process it's a process

    Saving Money?

We spent probably $300-400 monthly eating out and even though I've bought lots of protein powders (still experimenting) there is definitely a savings. Can't wait to start recalculating the household budget!!

Woke up with a weird pain!

Sipping a protein shake now. Hope it stays down.
  11. ..........

Havnt lossed a pound in two wekks!

very much the same timing and all, I am 2 months out on next Monday.lost, 61 but had a few more to loose to get under 300, 2 1/2 week plateau shortly after raising protein levels and adding raw veg's. I am trying to exercise and there is not any result of weight loss only. I am waiting for this to blow over with out worrying that it may not be so much the same as any more. no band, just the sleeve current.

    Counting cals, fat, carbs??

Yes, I agree with Tracy, i was told that i'm supposed to concentrate on protein and fluid intake right now, but i still don't get alot of calories in maybe 630 if that on a good day, and about 73grams protein. . . today was really bad, i helped my daughter move back into her dorm so didn't eat or drink properly, couldn't eat my dinner either, just about 2 oz, but at least it was something huh?

  15. Hi, I am a newbie to this site and just lost my band and am convinced that the vertical sleeve is my next best option. I am writing to inquire of the "sleeved" about their experiences with pbing, sliming or food getting stuck? Is this real? If so, is it similar to the band experience? How long does it take to pass? What are suggestive tips to get the food to move along since "being too tight" and getting an unfill isnt an option? Please advise. Thanks! thinking about it

I am a nurse too, I used to do 7-12 hour shifts in a row and then I was off for a week. So I relate to your question. If you read through the forum you'll find a wealth of information. Eating at regular hours is not really an issue, you can always grab a piece of cheese or a Protein bar if you are hungry. Weight loss will significantly improve comorbidities. sleep apnea seems to go away from what most here write. Diabetes typically goes into remission, labs improve. Most of all being a nurse and walking around for 12 hours is MUCH easier after weight loss! Research, read, study, find everything you can. Research various WLS types, doctors, obesity studies, the works. Leave nothing out. Just know what you are getting into so you can be prepared to get this done. ANY WLS type is going to be tough, it's hard losing weight. I can't do it the traditional way, it's just too hard. No self control.... call it what you will. I still can't do it. Banding is hard but it's the kind of hard we can do, our population. It makes weight loss possible for the first time ever. I understand your issues related to food/meals/nursing. If I can help please let me know.

So I gues I'm the new "kid" on the block. I am six days from the big day, so I've been on the diet for about a week. My husband is a body builder, so I had some experience with protein drinks prior to starting. Even so I decided to try the ones listed by my doctor, and to my surprise the :hungry:ADKINS ADVANTAGE :hungry: has the best taste ever... no after-taste at all! (I was dreading the taste of yucky food more than the thought of less food. Hooray!!!) To bring you up to date... I'm 56, and weighed in at 218 at the time of approval. Since I am only 5'5" tall the BMI thing was not my Ace. It was the health issues, poor family history, and bad genetics that pushed me over the line. So here I am, as nervous as a tick... but happy too. :nervous What can I say? I'm a whimp!!! Hats off to those who have gone before! Did I mention I'm as nervous as a tick?????????????? :help::help::help::help::help::help::help: Until next time, Sharon J
  18. That's awesome! Congratulations! I don't have any pictures to post yet. I started at 258 and am now 211. I just this week lost 3 lbs after nearly a 3 week stall. I'm pretty much eating whatever I want, but just a bite or two. Much more than that I end up feeling sick. I have to drink a protein shake each day just to meet my protein. I ended up getting two liters of IV fluids at my six week check up because I was dehydrated. It's a huge struggle to get my fluids in. Have to say that I love my sleeve too, despite any discomfort it may be giving me right now. Keep up the good work!

    prednisone hunger

Prednisone among other things is what got me here....... I am having a severe flare of my autoimmune disorder and have.held off increasing my prednisone as long as possible, well increasing it and a few days I have seen my hunger increase almost by double, my calories have gone from around 400 to around 780 and I'm controlling myself. This is a concern because I can not work out very much right now due to complications and my autoimmune disorder, question any veterans encountered this prednisone use and how do you handle this how do you not give in to the increasing constant hunger, I have tried increasing fluids, adding unflavored Protein but the scale has slowed and I read someones post that their nut said we should not be consuming more than 500 calories if we are not working out post op ? I'm feeling lost so if any one has any insight please let me know Cyn-shakiraa Dos 12-17-12

    Slow Going

You were banded over two months ago and you're not on solid food yet? When does your Dr. say you can have solid food? You need Protein to stay satisfied, so are you track how much protein in a day you're consuming? Once you start letting the carbs back in, like chocolate, it will make you crave them all the more. I would track my daily calories and daily protein and avoid carbs except for green veggies.
  21. I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op and I'm feeling defeated already . I lost 20 lbs in the first two weeks then nothing I've been feeling tired etc ... I'm sure my body Is just in a shock mode I was a big carb eater now I have to figure out protein stuff I just started soft solids I thought I was doing stuff right but I guess I'm not , I don't ... I can't fail at this ... I'm just in a funk sorry friends

    Hiking Fuel

I am a hiker both pre and post op. Even before food considerations, make sure you have more then enough Water. Probably 2x the amount you take now. I went on a difficult hike at week 3 (mistake in hindsight) and ran out of water at the top. It was a tough hike going down too and I had zero water. This hike was 5 miles round trip, but 1 mile was flat and 1.5 mile was 3000 foot climb to lake. Hard for even "good" hikers. Just to let you know, I took 64 oz, was still only enough for going up. I got really really dehydrated in the last mile back to the car and did not think I was going to make it. Seriously, I was thinking about a living will and power of attorney right there if my body shut down and if I did make it back in only dehydrated state, what the ER trip back to the hospital was going to be like. This is not hyperbole!!! Any ways, made it back to the car and downed water all the way home and was still wiped out when at ho.e. went to sleep very early so wiped out from the ordeal. Don't repeat this!! So- now you understand the importance of staying hydrated on a challenging hike ( or any hike) post op. As for food, you will want to have 3 or 4 Protein shakes with you. You do not need them pre mixed, but have the powder in baggies so you can quickly mix the up. This is if you are hiking before 1 month post op. Once you are on solids, I would make sure you take small protein packages (1-3 ounces in size). Try and west one every 1/2 mile. I do not really know as I was not hiking until 6 months out after the week 3 hike. If you are far enough out, make sure you are testing good carbs. Nuts.com makes good energy squares that will really help you up those switchbacks. Cliff bard are OK for hiking, but they have a ton of sugar so not so good for us. Most likely you would get diarrhea from the sugar overload and that is no fun on a home. Try and replace Clif bars with a low carb variety so there is no sugar rush. Again, small increments of protein are good to eat as you are hiking up the trail. Think sausage size, lunch meat or babel cheeses. Hope this helps!

    Getting an early start

@@AML32 Thanks for your help. My surgeon doesn't require one. It was something I researched on my own. Surgeon says high Protein low carb but no real guidelines. But I was nervous about doing just liquids after so I wanted to be more prepared than that. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Thanks

Guys, so interview was a success. I don't think that anyone had a clue about the surgery, or at least if they did it wasn't so obvious that they needed to mention it. I did have to explain that I didn't eat breads and carbs, but I guess that they took it with ease (it was LA, after all). I was able to buy a suit at Nordstroms for the occasion (size 50, I think that they go to 52 there, and the guy told me that there wasn't a ton of selection at that size). But the suit looked great on, and gave me a lot of confidence. It was very, very hard to get enough Water, enough food, and certainly enough Protein given the 14 hours per day of interviews or social events. We sleevers eat SO slow, and everyone assumes that you're done, when you are actually just taking a break so that you don't overfill. And honestly, I think that I got quite sick because of it, but the interview went excellent, and I don't believe that 30 lbs. heavier, that it would have gone as well. So, thanks again.
  25. I'm sorry, I'm not from your area, but you will get plenty of online support on LBT. Most of us have been in the same palce as you or will be soon. I'm glad you were able to get you insurance to work. I was self-pay, but even at that, my band has been worth every single penny. You need to get exact instructions from your doctor as to the amount of time and what you can eat (or drink) on both your pre-op and post-op diets. As you read the boards, you'll see that there are as many different diet recommendations as there are doctors. Carnation sugar free shakes was one of the Protein drinks on my plan (with an added 1/4 cup of powdered skim milk to boost the protein), but I had a few other choices as well. I was also allowed one small "meal", veggies and a fruit. Some doctors are stricter than others, so it's important to follow your own doctor's advice. The first couple days were by far the hardest for me. I think my system needed to adjust to the lack of carbs and calories, but it did get better. I drank a boat load of green tea and Water too. Good luck, and I hope you're able to connect with some other banders in your area.
