Hi Everyone My name is Brenda I am 37. 3 teenagers Married 17 years tomorrow. I have been fighting my weight for 25 years. At one time in my life i got down too 100 and stayed there for a few years then I had my first son.Things went back up for a while. I lost and had a daughter, gained more . I have been doing the up and down thing for so long. I am at 220 right now and nothing is working. I am 5ft2 with a BMI of 40. I have back pain all most all the time. My knees are giving out and my legs hurt everynight. I have been reading about the Lap-Band surgery for long long time now and I have made an Appt with a Dr in Fairfax Va for Nov.3.I really want this surgery but I am not getting my hopes up about it. I never get someting I reallly really want. But I am going to try harder and fight like hell to get it. All I want is to have a normal life again. Oh to be able to ride a bike with my kids, go for walks in the woods. Play softball with them again. Sit in a booth when we go out to dinner. Oh man I want to be able to roll over in bed like a normal person. To have mirrors in my house that show from the neck down,,,LOL. For my husband to be able to get his arms all the way around me to give me a hug. To feel good about me........Sorry I am going on and on...... will stop now... Thank you

I am 58 and I was banded August 3 2005 by Dr. Gadeleta at north shore hospital.I lost46pounds by January o6. I went from 233 to 187. I have been readingthe posts since last Augst and am very grateful for all the wonderful things I havel learned from all of you. I also learned if your not losing you need a fill or your not using the band to its fullest potential. On August 26, 06 I had my first fill of 1.5 cc. My band holds 4 cc. That night I didnt sleep a wink and had bubbles in my throat. I was so happy my doctor told me to come in right away when I called him the next day. he did a adjustment and now Ihave .8 fill. I fell great and started losing weight . This time im keeping the baking pans in the garage. Dessert was my weakness from now on its going to be fruit . Good luck to everyone. i'm not on the computer to often but i'll check in next month and let you know how i'm doing.

Congratulations on that weight loss @ASHLEIGH77. How are you doing with your ESG? Doesn't seem real prevalent in Central Ohio where I live, where did you have your surgery done? Hope your healing goes really smooth, sounds like you've started making, your way towards a goal weight. Have a very good day.😛

Thanks for the reply. Albany is about 150 miles from Atlanta, that's not to far. Have you had a fill yet? Was it painful? How much weight have you lost? Do you eat much? Just want to talk to someone that's in the same place I am. I love being banded , it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Since I've gone in for my "interview" to see if i was qualified...I've gotten a really bad hit of depression so I've been using food as my comfort....so I've gained like 30 pounds since then...I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life

At 261 lbs at 5'5 I am at .907 waist-to-hips ratio -- they say all women should be at 0.8 (0.95 for men)---so I'm smaller than the target (if I was a MAN!) so I'm not too far off from their target ratio number for women - which I think is silly.....as if I am not overweight - yeah right.......I'm not pear-shaped but I am still MO - BMI charts, weight/height charts, my doctor's opinion....

Well imagine that at over 200 lbs I'm considered healthy at 5'. I guess the pain in my legs, ankles and shortness of breath (this is why I got the lapband) are just in my head. What a crock. They've been stressing how overweight people are and to get healthy and no they are saying go ahead and stay fat??? Wonder if insurance companies are behind this? =-) I think I'll stick to my orginal plan of losing the weight. Sharon

It’s hard to find good “before” pictures

I hid from cameras too. My husband took my starting photos. I had the day of surgery standing front and side. He continued to take the same front and side photo each month of my weight loss. -
Want Surgery! Hard Time with Insurance
stargate713 replied to torre1972's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The wording in most insurance plan information is designed to discourage you from proceeding with the process. The first thing you need to do is call your insurance and ask "do i have any exclusions in my policy for weight loss surgery" some employers do have exclusions in their plans. They may tell you it has to be medically nessassary, and you need to be over a specific BMI. As long as there is no specific exclusion in your policy, you go through the process, and if they deny you, then you appeal. If you read through these boards you will see numerous stories of the "hoops" people have had to jump through to get approved. But if your BMI is high enough, and there is not an exclusion in your policy then it is worth the effort. Good luck! -
I have always enjoyed margaritas with friends at the local cantina along with the rich food. Since the band yes there were major cut backs. I continued to drink though and really to much and to often. My weightloss was consistent but slow. For the last 5 weeks I have not been to my favorite spanish resturaunt and the scale has noticed. My weightloss doubled over the last three weeks. I was drinking a lot of calories bottom line. Eating the food went hand in hand. I am now getting back into cooking my own food. My band is good to me as I can eat most anything with caution and limits. I wanted to share this because I did not think a couple drinks a couple times a week would have such an effect on my weight loss but it did. Don't be fooled like me and don't let anything stand in the way of our quest for being healthy! I'm in the 50lb club now and with renewed vigor!

Got SSSOOO Many questions before calling a Doc!!!!!
reif78 replied to ThinDolphin3's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
never believe your insurance company cause the minute they say you dont need something they deny you cause you didnt do this. trust me i went a 8 months before i even got my approval cause they denied me cause i didnt do something. heres what i did. 1. consulted family physician . we listed all the diets and medications even over the counter diet aides i used. he then made a referral for me for the surgeon i wanted to use. and have him write a letter of recommendation for you so you can give it to your surgeon. so when they submit it to the insurance it is a better help to get approved. 2. go to the surgeon consult. youll go thier for 6 months of weigh ins. 3. youll have to see a dietitian,a nutritionist, youll be put on a 1200 cal diet to see and prove to the insurance co that dieting dont work. 4. youll have several blood work ups 5.you see a pulmonologist and take chest xrays and a breathing test. 6.psych consult. 7.2 day sleep apnea testing. 8. and whatever else your doctor will make you do everyone is different on what needs done before your info will be submitted to the insurance company. I was approved 8 months after i initially started everything to get approved. some insurance companies may have you go to a seminar about the lapband system. mine didnt. the way i worked i woulda never made it. but in the end its worth it i was banded 12/12/07 and i love it. you will too its only been 9 days and i feel better and im energetic. and ive lost 29 pounds and i breathe better. cause i have sleep apnea due to my weight. and can actually sleep at night now. and its only been 9 days. i know most of my weight off now is just Water weight. but weight is weight . hope things go well for you. -
Well, I started the program at Beaumont Hospital yesterday and met with the physician. They did lots of blood work, like 6 vials, and an EKG. My BMI IS 44 and I weighed in at a whopping 263. I have appointments scheduled next month with the dietition, the exercise physiologist, a psycologist for my psyc evaluation, and again with the doc for appointment #2. My insurance requires 6 months of documentation in a medically supervised WL program. Unless I get my PCP to sign off. Anyway, the ball is rolling so that is the good part. I made the leap so to speak. That evening I went to the hospital's Club Bariatrix support group meeting where one of the 2 surgeons in the program were speaking. He is an accomplished RnY surgeon but has not started doing the Lap Band in his practice yet. He has assisted the other surgeon with the procedure. He is getting started and needs to set up 3 people in one day to get his certification. Anyway, all the people in this meeting were RnY patients and not one Lab Bander. (just my luck) Everyone there looked like they had lost a lot of weight and I really can't say anyone looked "healthy". Everyone had a drawn out saggy, thinning hair look about them. It was really disheartening. I really need to get intouch with some other Lap Banders. As far as the surgeon goes. . . I am signed up with the other surgeon in the practice who has done about 150 LapBands. But I may end up going with the other surgeon because he happens to be my long lost second cousin, and I figure I can call him up and drive him nuts with any problems or questions I have.

10/31/2011 So today is my birthday. I woke up this morning and lay in bed feeling depressed. Hopeless. Like a failure. I had so many hopes pinned on being successful with weight-loss after my sleeve surgery. But I am 5 weeks since surgery and I haven't lost anything to speak of. I go up and down the same few pounds. Pre-surgery I lost 25 pounds in about 8 weeks. Post- surgery I haven't lost more than a few pounds. I am now trying to figure out what I am doing wrong and how I can make this work for me. I am getting my protein everyday. I am getting the fluids. I am taking my vitamins. I am not eating refined carbs -- mainly I eat fruit and vegetables and fiber cereal to keep my colon moving properly. Unfortunately I am hungry pretty often. I keep appropriate foods on-hand and drink lots of Crystal Light. But if I am hungry, I do eat something. I need to move everyday. I have not yet made daily exercise a routine. I exercise in starts and stops -- not with regularity. I am going to focus on working on this part of the equation. If anyone can relate to this I would love to hear how you found your way to weight loss. This is an unbelievable process to go through to find that it isn't working for you. I am really disheartened. I don't want to fail. Ms. C Surgery date 9/23/2011

Last October I had a slight unfill as I felt I was too tight and it was the best decision as I could lose weight and keep food down. All has been going well until the last couple of weeks I have started to feel slightly hungry and looking for snacks. I have booked another appointment but Im wondering if I was too tight last time will I be the same this time, I dont want to be so tight I rarely eat. Does the band change or loosen over time? my husband is telling me I shouldnt have anymore but my head thinks its time for a fill. What do you all think?

Hi Joann!! I'm so glad I saw your post. I'm a mother whose baby was removed from her at the age of 17 while being held in a maternity "home" in Washington, D.C. This was 1966. I wonder if I can be of help to you in that regard? I'm very much into activism regarding this period of time referred to as the Baby Scoop Era (post WWII through 1972)... or anyone else here who is a mother like me or adopted. My project is the Baby Scoop Era Research Initiative, www.babyscoopera.com I know many mothers and adopted people have food issues and weight problems. I'm so sorry that your afamily isn't supportive or that you are having problems getting them to understand, or whatever the issue is re them. Congratulations on taking the step to focus on YOU!!! I did the same. I had the banding on February 17th. I've lost 47 lbs so far. Please let me know if you would like to connect with me directly. My email is karenwb2@verizon.net I can steer you to some really good support groups!! KarenWB Richmond, VA -

Hi!!!!! Dr. Woodman is my surgeon. He is a wonderful surgeon. When ppl say that he has no bedside manner, its bascially that he does not want to hear excuses. He just wants ppl to admit to their eating disorder or weight issues and be honest. So many ppl lie and make excuses to him and he just calls them out if they do. Like if someone died in your family and you ate (emotionally) and went to his office for checkup and you gained some weight.....he dont like that. He says you eat because you eat.....nobody or nothing can make you. He just wants all of us to know that we are the ones that control our bodies......some ppl call it mean, i call it being straight forward and honest. I am glad to find you. I have been looking for someone kind of close to my location. I am in Henderson. My insurance didnt require the 6 month diet program....just psyh eval, dietitian and 5 yrs of recorded weight history. I was just approved yesterday. I will have my labs and xrays done next week, then come to Memphis to Dr. Woodmans office to discuss the surgery with him and schedule the date. I am so excited!! Hope to hear from you.. I dont have any info regarding pre-op and post-op diet or anything yet but when I hear something I will keep you posted. ttys -
Hey banders! My name is Jeremy and I was banded yesterday. I know it is too soon to worry about exercising, I have to wait a month or so but I wanted to post something and interact with others and see how long you waited and what type of exercise you guys did? Quite honestly I wanted to hire a personal trainer but kind of skeptical on it. I am committed to losing weight and have a positive attitude towards acheiving whatever I can! I set my expectations at a low bar so I don't get disappointed if I don't achieve what I initially desired!

I am 4 wks post op today and I'd say the "bandster hell" is the worst part. for the first 2 wks I was doing fab goin' through the "honeymoon phase" w/ restriction, losing weight left and right. But now I have no restriction and I'm giving in to the snack monster. I have faith I can do well b/c I have done really well just minor slip ups. I stay under 1100 calories a day, and work out 30 mins a day, so I'm just keeping my focus on that until my first fill on 7/28!!! -

RestlessMonkey replied to ~*~*~Panda~*~*~'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me personally? NOTHING. Seriously. Compared to all the diets I tried and how absolutely MISERABLE I felt after suffering and struggling and striving and measuring and charting and journaling and yada yada to lose 30 measley pounds only to relax and gain it back in 1/2 the time it took me to lose it? This is heaven. So I've had to learn to chew well, so I can't drink with my meals, so it took a while for the fills to finally give me restriction. I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I think my band is wonderful. Even having to have TWO surgeries (my own fault) it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. And as for bandster hell? I've gone through similar things before (a liquid diet of some weirdo liquid Protein shots that I did in the early 70's comes to mind) ... bandster hell was nothing compared to that, because it has an end. :scared2: -

What sucks, the most is that I thought had done all of the research but still feel I did not know everything. I did not learn about banderst hell until joining this site. I thought this would be something that not only would help me eat less but would also curve that craving and that is not what happen. I am very happy I got the surgery and I have lost 35 pounds from 03/30/09. But this is really hard work. When they say it is just a tool that is what is meant you have to really be ready to loose weight. It is slow but steady. -
I have BCBS NJ. I was not allowed to lose or gain any weight during my six month wait. My BMI was right at 40 and I had a slew of co-mortilities APNEA, BP, diabetes and more. But each insurance plan even with the same company is different. At my pre op class 3 of us had BCBS with a 6 month wait 1 woman had them and her consult was literally a week before and was approved for surgery.
