  1. Yes this last one I did in the blender with ice. I've tried water, milk, soy milk, and coconut milk also to mix. Nothing seems to be helping. I do have several kinds of broth and popsicles that are keeping me sane. I ordered some more protein stuff to try online but it's not going to be here for like a week cause the holiday. Not sure what to do till then and my doctor's office is closed today.

4 weeks to go, what shoukd i be doing?

Well the foods you need will depend on your surgeon's guidelines, but Protein powder is probably a must. Soup broth, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles are probably going to be on there as well since they are pretty standard. Get a good blender and a good food processor if you don't have one. Depending on your surgeon's recommendations, you will move to pureed foods a couple to few weeks after surgery. Buy extra baby food! You and your little one might have the same dinner at night! I would try to focus more on the mental side of it though. Think and plan how you are going to do liquids when other people are eating (i.e. going to a birthday party or family cook-out). Start to wean yourself of caffeine now if you drink soda or coffee regularly. Start exercising now. Try to practice not drinking while eating. These are some things that will help in the long run.
  3. I really don't keep track of my calories. My doctor said I should focus on Protein 60g. However, I don't really keep in track of that either. Sometimes I take protein shots. I guess I will have to start tracking my calories as well. Thanks for you advice.

    Meltdown

Take a deep breath...you're only a week post-op...your body is tired, sore, in the process of healing, and it is craving nutrients; the lack there of has everything out of balance. Your emotional toddler tantrum is normal at the height of this post-op healing time. So, go find a quiet place. Cry if you have to. Gather yourself together, take deep breaths, and figure out what you have to do. Do you need to go buy some mashed potato flakes? During this stage I was allowed scrambled eggs. Are you allowed that, with some cheese? What other soft food options do you have? In the calm after the storm, problem solve and find a solution that works for you. You're going to do fine. Before you know it the worst of the post-op dieting will be over and you're going to be rocking that sleeve like its nobodies business! Good luck to you and your journey.

    Meltdown

I ended up with a few tears and a tbsp of humus : ) And I know mashed potatoes aren't the best, but figured adding nutritional yeast and unflavored Protein powder would help. Thanks for letting me vent : ). Any way to help even out some of these crazy mood swings?

    Malnutrition?

Believe me, I'm not intentionally just having shakes and vitamins. I want to try these things, I'm just a tad scared too. The new protein shake I got is super filling! Syntrax Peanut butter cookie. Totally delish, but way filling. I'm on my break at work and still feel super full from the one I finished at 3. I'll take out the milk and just use water. I appreciate all the feed back
  7. Hi everybody. One week out of surgery, and my nutritionist recommended I maintain the clear liquid diet for two more weeks. I came across this clear protein drink, incredibly delicious and does not cause me any problems. I just find an issue balancing with drinking protein and drinking water. Anybody else struggling with that? And does anybody have any recommendations regarding how I can maintain the balance? Thanks!
  8. I cant take this cotton mouth and funky breath anymore!!!!!!!! I take in enough water, protein shakes, and this cotton dry mouth is driving nuts.... What can I do???? Nothing seems to help.. any suggestions. :tongue_smilie:

    Completely unfilled...January 2008...

When I first got this band, I was so positive and so just hopeful. Now, I'm like, great, another diet, I just have the band now. Now, all I do is worry about slips, erosions, etc. Not so much erosions, I worry about slips. I'm so happy for the people this lap-band works for. I want it to work for everyone. I don't want anyone to have problems with it. It's just with me an adequate fill = reflux, as in carry a double bagged grocery bag with me reflux. Sigh. I'm not eating too much, when I have a fill, I just can't eat but fattening foods. Jeesh, to think I got this to eat more healthy. Well, enough blogging for now. I hope some of you can relate. I sometimes feel so alone in this. Everyone is like it will work if you work it. Well, I have complications called reflux with a a fill.. How the hell am I supposed to work it when every time I get a fill I am sliming up a protein shake? AGRR. I'm really trying with this. I really am.

    Cotton MOUTH!!

When you reduce carbohydrate from your diet, and get most of your calories from Protein, your body converts into a state called ketosis, which basically means that your body is using its fat stores for fuel. This causes a funky breath. If you google ketosis, or look at any of the low carb diet forums, you will find more information on this. Not much you can do about the funky breath until you start taking in some good carbohydrates.

    Protein After Surgery

You can definitely lose weight on fewer than 40 or 50 gm Protein a day, or else no one would ever starve to death. It's about the weight you're losing. The protein intake goals are about supporting healthy fat loss, not just weight loss, which would otherwise include loss of lean muscle mass. The guidelines per my nurtitionist are 60gm - 70gm. Call yours & see what their requirements are, they vary. The most I've been able to do is 60s, and just a few times. It's much easier for me to actually eat the protein than drink eat - Protein drinks sit very heavy for me, but I try. I'm only 7 weeks out & still trying to dance around capacity issues. If you do things that require more protein, you will need to increase. And yes, the 50s, 60s, 70s you're hearing are lifelong daily minimums. Type of protein matters too. They are not created equal. whey isolate is one of the better ones, plan whey works. Bunches & bunches of types out there. I just typed this earlier: generally if protein comes in packaging that looks like a test tube or a vibrator, you don't want it.

    Anyone Have Joint Pain

No it's pain in my elbow and wrist! It goes away with a heating pad! And it's not consistant! I started powder vitamins in my protein and it is getting a little more tolerable!

    Protein After Surgery

Like most things with the sleeve, it seems NUTs and surgeons all have different ideas for what is ideal. My NUT said to eat at least 60 gms of Protein a day, but 80 is even better! Early out, it is really hard to get all those in. Just get the most that you can and make sure everything you consume (except for water) is a good protein source once you are on the full liquid stage and beyond. After you are a month out or so, it's much easier to hit those high protein goals.

    Protein After Surgery

Did your medical team have a nutitionist available for you? You should try working with them first as they know your story far better than any of us here on an Internet forum. Where did you read 45-50 grams of Protein daily to lose weight? Was that for people having a sleeve gastrectomy or another WLS surgery, or is that for a non-WLS individual? I think it would depend on whether or not you are willing to lose muscle mass as part of your weight loss. Reducing protein intake to that level will NOT help burn fat, if that is the goal ... I am a very active person with exercise and weight lifting. I get probably 120 to 140 grams of protein in daily. I do not want to lose muscle and am trying to regain the muscle I lost early out. As far as doing this forever ... well, yes. "Normal" weight people get far more protein than that, so there is no reason we shouldn't as well. You really need to talk to your medical team and figure out what your goals are with the level of exercise you are willing to commit to and where you are at now.

    4 months protein question.

I am 11 months post surgery and still have a Protein shake or fortified greek yogurt almost every day. I am not a huge fan of meat and I am allergic to soy, so I need the whey protein from the shakes to ensure I get my 60 grams each day.

    Low grade fever

I spoke to my dr and told him my fever fluctuates to 99.9-100.5. He said bc I have a cough it's probably just a cold. And to just keep an eye on things.... If I get worse or have any symptoms that are in my discharge papers then to reach out. But I go for my follow up appt on Tuesday. Meanwhile I'm just trying to get my fluid in, not worrying about the protein as much. Yesterday I had one shake and about 20 oz of water. So I know I'm losing weight. But I wonder if once I feel better will I gain a little of the weight back?

    24 hours and counting!

Yes, I am one week out...... expect bruising, I was shocked by the amount of bruising. And make sure you have everything at home ready.... several options... it IS true that some of the things you liked before surgery you may not like post op, only six days and I am turned off by a favorite just two weeks ago, keep us posted! Also post op gravity is your worst enemy, but once I figured out HOW to get up and down in a less painful way, ahh much better.
  18. I am very confused. I am 7 days post-op. I am walking about 3 miles a day, in 3 20-minute increments. I am drinking my protein and eating 3 x’s a day. But I am in a constant state of feeling full and hungry and tired. Am I doing too much? Too little? They kept telling me if I walked more I would feel better after the surgery, but it just makes me hurt and more hungry. How can I tell when I eat too much? How can I tell when I’m really hungry? How can I tell when the pain is caused by doing too much? How can I tell if the unending tiredness is from not eating enough?

    What on earth is happening?

@@Julie norton Thanks you so much for responding. This is a little unnerving, feeling hungry so suddenly after such long periods of satiety. Today I've eaten very little and I'm feeling ok - not as ravenous as the past few days. Good to know that you have been at this for years, and experience some weeks where you are hungrier than others. I wonder why that is?? My cycle just ended, so I'm left wondering if perhaps it might be something hormonal. AS for eating more Protein at lunch, I've been eating SO much protein - like almost nothing but! Smoked mussels, chicken salad, mixed greens, a tiny amount of dressing, no carbs, no sugars. Thanks for checking in with me and offering our thoughts. Very helpful indeed!
  20. Agree with built2livenotexist, I would start your pre op diet. I did several practice runs before surgery. See if you can get your surgeon to agree that if you lose the 8lbs by say Mid November that they'll submit you before the end of November. If you have access to a pool you could swim. Maybe Pilates moves that dont involve standing? Since you can't exercise strenuously, you'll have to severely modify your diet to create a deficit between what you eat and what you burn. Maybe do shakes during the day and something good and healthy for dinner. I actually like to keep dinner fairly light so I ate during the day and had a shake for dinner. You can pump the shakes up with fruit and veggies and a good Protein powder and maybe something filling like flax. Also make sure you get in lots of Fiber so that you errrm evacuate on a regular schedule! Good luck to you! I really hate the dangling of the carrot that your doc is doing. Reasons why I self paid and went to Mexico.
  21. Hi, @LisaLou30. I know you can do this! Sometimes it can be discouraging when unexpected circumstances seem to put off or threaten to put off your surgery along your journey. If your physical activity has decreased because of your injury, you should definitely consider decreasing caloric intake. I used the premier shakes for my preop diet, one for breakfast and lunch and a normal meal for dinner. The meal consisted of 3oz of lean protein and 3 oz of non starchy veggies. It worked for me and provided results. How is your fluid intake? For me, my body seemed to like water more that any other zero calorie liquid.

    Travel in the USA

My family loves to go out to eat, so I've had to develop several strategies that I employ (depending on the restaurant and who I'm with): Offer to share a meal Order an appetizer (this can be troublesome because they can often be fried or covered in cheese) Order a kids meal (most restaurants will allow this, BUT it's also a risk because a lot of restaurants have unhealthy kids meals like chicken nuggets, french fries, mac&cheese) Order a side dish (You can usually find relatively healthy side dishes, they won't be high-protein, but it may be the best alternative depending on type of restaurant) Ask for or bring your own "to go" containers. Lastly, and this was my newest revelation: some restaurants allow people to "add on" protein/meat to an existing meal. EX: my husband ordered a regular meal and we "added on" 4 grilled shrimp. This was PERFECT for me. I had the shrimp and ordered a side of broccoli. Best meal EVER!
  23. Thanks to all that responded to my earlier post. I was banded on Monday and had to stay in the hospital until Wed afternoon due to severe nausea. I have had severe diarrhea since I came home on Wed. Yesterday I changed clothes 7 times. The doctor's office called to check in and they said if I still had it today to call and come in. Unfortunately it is back. They put me on full liquids ( no Protein shakes) and I have to call back if I still have it this afternoon. My husband is worried and not that great with illness. He made a stupid comment about why I put myself thru all this. I know why and I don’t regret my decision but I am a little down now. I know that this will pass soon and I will be back on track and I know my husband is saying stupid things out of worry. Has anyone had a similar situation? Any suggestions?
  24. I'm drinking two protein shakes a day and I've been eating chicken and eggs mostly sometimes I’ll have tuna. I'm only allowed to have 2 ounces of protein at a time. And in between meals I’m supposed to have fruit and yogurt.
  25. I have been having a lot of GI problems over the last several month or so. The pain became unbearable this week, so I went to my dr and she thinks it's due to artificial sweetners. As I think about my diet, much of what I eat has these sweeteners in them. I will do anything to avoid the pain and bloating caused by the artificial sweetener, so I am looking for ideas on how to revamp my diet. I could care less about eliminating most of it, but I think I'm really worried about protein shakes because they are my go to item. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
