  1. I'm single too and had a friend stay with me 2-1/2 days. She left after lunch the third day. I was feeling pretty good at that point. Frankly I would have preferred her leaving the next day but didn't say so because she missed her husband and obviously wanted to go home. I do not advise you to go it alone the first few days. I too have a cat and was able to bend over and feed him pretty painfree by day three.
  2. i’m 4 weeks post surgery. i’m still on my purée diet. tonight i added a little sauce (1/8tsp) and about a half hour later threw it all back up. is this what it’s going to be like every time o try anew stuff?? ugh
  3. I go for my wls seminar in about a week. Looking for ideas as to what questions I should ask and any ideas. Thank you!

    Ovarian pain?

I never had any issues with ovarian cysts but ended up with severe pain in my left ovary a week after my bypass. Turned out I had a cancerous ovarian tumor. Probably wouldn't have known about it for a long time if the bypass surgery hadn't irritated it. Definitely get it checked out. Better safe than sorry!
  5. mine was very simple and i was pretty comfortable with it. my psych eval was a 2-visit deal. the first day i went she asked me about my medical history, my family history, if i had anxiety, depression, etc. also discussed medications, exercise regimen (NONE), support system. she gave me three or four little 'inventories' to fill out and bring back the next day. the inventories were a bulimia/anorexia type survey, an eating survey, and some sort of 27 question survey about the anxiety i had in certain scenarios, sleeping, etc. all very simple. i went back for my 2nd appt she looked it all over, asked me a few of the same questions from the first appt, and said i was approved and she would send a letter to my surgeon. she was really nice and told me that i seemed pretty 'normal' and that this is the best thing i could ever do for myself.
  6. Interesting! Yesterday when I went for my second fill, I mentioned this forum to the person who did my fill. She told me that she had been banded for 5 years and in the beginning had come here to check it out and she didn't stay because she said it seemed as if there were a lot of angry people here. Sometimes it certainly seems like that, but I have found a lot of very friendly helpful folks who seem to have their heads in the right place. I think some people are naysayers regardless of what the subject matter is or just like to think they no better than everyone else. The band is not for some people, just like gastric bypass or the sleeve is not for everyone. I think it also depends on where you are at emotionally in your life. I know someone (she's gone from a very close friend to frienemy) who had gastric bypass several years ago and any time an overweight person is having issues in their life (not necessarily weight) or not her response is always, "Why don't you go get weight loss surgery?" She likes to think she knows everything about everything and if everyone listened to her they wouldn't have any problems. Her first question to me after my surgery (I wasn't even a week out) was, "So...have you thrown up yet?" When I asked her why would I do that she responded with some explanation of how she just has to push the limit if she is told she shouldn't do something. Crazy huh? I didn't even bother to explain the differences in her surgery compared to mine. It seemed like a waste of my energy. I'm sure you're wondering how she did with her weight loss - she did good for awhile, but has never been thin and is still considerably overweight. She considers her surgery a success. She's one of the biggest reasons why I decided to try the Lap Band since it was done as an outpatient, is reversible, less costly and doesn't involve re-routing my innards. While the recovery was easier in many ways, the daily living part is a little more difficult since she seems to be less restricted when it comes to what she can eat and of course the weight loss is slower. I don't even know why I posted this! LOL! But I don't really talk to anyone else about my WLS. I have not made it public - except here. I asked her not to tell anyone, but knowing her, someone else out there knows.
  7. I quit both a week before my surgery as I only had to do a one week pre op diet. But if you are a big caffeine drinker you might want to start weaning yourself a little sooner; just my opinion. Good luck to you!

    Emotional Eaters

I'm 7 weeks post band. My appetite is reduced and I get some restriction but not a lot. For me the restriction is more important. I'm fine at controlling my portions when I'm at home but I eat out a lot mainly for work and that's when I find it difficult. I could easily eat a 3 course meal without any problem. My consultant is reluctant to tighten my band much more than it is. I've had 3 fills and am now at 5mls. He thinks it's good that I can eat out without difficulty but I fell I need that restriction so I feel there is a safety net and a reminder to stop eating! I weighed myself this morning and I had gained a pound, so as an emotional eater that sent me downward into negative thinking, followed by anxiety and naturally chaotic eating. This again is why I need the restriction. I almost need that form of a slap around the face if you know what I mean. I'd really like to hear thoughts from any other emotional eaters with a band and how they are coping with their journey.
  9. Hey everyone! After thinking of weight loss surgery for over 2 years, I finally made the call last week for an appointment. They were able to get me in today! I am so excited but nervous as heck! I am needing a sleep study 😞 and an endoscope test. I do get to pass the 3 month dietary restriction due to my insurance requirements for BMI. It sounds like I need to lose 25 lbs before I can schedule surgery and possibly another 25 on the preop diet. (Which I am very nervous about failing). I broke down last week and told my husband, who encouraged me to make the call. I am so thankful he is on my side but I do not plan on telling any other family members. Please tell me I'm not the only one out there like this??

    Sugars!

Anyone experience low blood sugars after the sleeve? The first few days to a week post op after the band I was very shaky bc my sugars went to low.

    Sugars!

So it took ten weeks to be diabetes free?!?! Were you insulin dependent?
  12. Looking for some summer clothes in a size 18 (hopefully 16 by then!). Headed to Florida in January for a week, and living in upstate NY, it's kind of hard to find summer clothes when there's a foot of snow outside! Lol
  13. HaHa, I know all you Southern folks think it's going to be "cool" in January in Florida! I will be the silly one on the beach in shorts, I'm sure. But right now, I'm in the coldest spot in the country, a mere 0 degrees this morning! Try that for chilly! haha So even 50 degrees sounds tropical to me! My husband and I are going to Fort Lauderdale on a reward trip he is part of for his job. It's an all expense paid trip for a week. Woo hoo Trust me, I am a thrift store shopper for sure, I love a good deal. Problem here is, they just don't have lighter clothes out right now, so that's out of the question. I am not sure if we are going to be renting a car while we are down there, so I don't know how easily I will be able to get around. Hopefully there are some stores near where we are staying! Plus, I'm also on time schedule with his other employees, as I'm sure his boss has an itinerary for some of the days. But, if anyone knows of anything near Ft Lauderdale, I certainly welcome your suggestions! I'm always game for thrifty shopping no matter where I go!

    Im Going In!

Congratulations! I hope that you're all done and in recovery now. Can't wait to take my place on the loser bench beside you in two weeks! Let us know how you're doing when you feel up to it.
  15. I used Optifast for my pre-op diet. It surprisingly doesn't taste too bad. I blended my shakes with ice so they were a little more satisfying. I only had to do it for two weeks, but the first 3 or 4 days were the worst and after that it got a lot better. I know of other people that went to my clinic with a higher BMI than me that had to do it for 3 or 4 weeks. I'm sure it wont be easy but you can do it! It is so worth it!
  16. I am seriously considering having this procedure done. But, because of distance, income, and benefit constrictions I would like to ask a few questions of those who have been there. I would seriously hate to wast a full day driving to Las Vegas only to find that I cannot afford to meet the pre-op requirements. 1: How many times a week or month did you have to see your doctor or dietitian during the counseling period? 2: In general, sans complications, what is the recovery period....how long before I could go back to work at a desk job? 3: How often will I have to see my dr in the period immediately after the surgery? I am quite sure that everyone is different, but I am looking for generalities from which I can piece together some probabilities to base my plans on
  17. I had my surgery last week. I didn't meet the doctor until my pre op class. he was nice.
  18. I had three weigh ins at clinic, h-pylori test, egd, pcos, sleep study, support group, nutrition, psych, medication review Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. My surgeon had a 3 hour seminar we were required to attend. I am so glad I did because I learned so very much. He actually gave the seminar himself. I would look into that, and attend both if applicable and see from there. I kind of feel like you. I have had my consultation and am in my 3 month 'pre surgery insurance stuff' to lose some weight and get in better shape for surgery. I am about to start trying Protein shakes and see which ones and what recipes I really like. That is something you can start doing. I am also slowly weening off of cokes. Well, I havent had a coke in a week so I guess I have weened off of those. I plan to have surgery in early December and about early November I will start weening off of all caffeine altogether, as that is a requirement from my doctor. I will also really limit my sugar intake. I do not want to be any more miserable than necessary when I do the 2 week pre op diet. Also, find out what both of their pre and post op diets and requirements are, like a sleep study and an endoscopy. Good luck!!

I went from 240 to 128 I have minimal sagging in my legs and I mean a little bit and none in my arms. However I've had three children and 3 c sections my stomach looks like a war zone. I wear a size 3-4 in jeans but if I had a tuck it would probably be a 0-2 bc in the 3-4's their baggy in my legs. I'm also five years out. I moisturized my skin a lot also but every body is different. I was n wlsg with a girl who had a washboard stomach after her wls. So it all depends. Don't waste ur money on gimmicks though k.
  21. Hi! How did your surgery go? I'm a lightweight too -- 36 right now and was told by coordinator I don't qualify because I was under 35 in the last three years.

    My Journey Begins Tomorrow...

Amanda, congrats on your new degree! This is an exciting time...my surgery is scheduled for Feb 14 and pre op is Feb 28. My doc does not require a liquid diet, just the South Beach diet, which I am starting now. There seems to be a variety of pre and post surgery dietary rules, depending upon the doctor. I am interested in hearing about what liquids you recommend. The only Protein shakes I have tried so far are Atkins, Special K and unjury. I plan on sampling post op stuff in the weeks before so I can stock up on the things I find most palatable.

    Gum?

I was told because of the air you swallow just as you do when drinking from a straw. Other than the first few days postop, I've had no issues with gas. I've been chewing gum and drinking from a straw almost daily since a week or so postop. I'm now 4 weeks postop and still have no issues with either.

    Banded On 3-22

I know exactly what you are talking about. I was banded 3/5 and went through the same thought. At the beginning I ate really really slow and was scared to over eat. I took 15 min to eat 4-6oz of food. Then I would stop myself and after 20 min felt full. You will definitely learn your body and no one is the same. I now know how much I can consume but for weeks was stopping myself in fear of having that vomiting feeling. Stay with it and listen to your body. It's true that it takes 20 min for your body to know it's full.
