Magic asked my progress; so here's a recap. I started researching Lap-Band in August. At that time, Dr. V's future was very uncertain. Dr. Bauman is further away than I prefer to travel. The only other Lap-Band surgeon I could identify is Dr. Kuwada at CMC. I'm 5'6" and +/- 236 pounds. My BMI is 38.6. The bad news is my co-morbidities aren't very significant. The good news is my insurance coverage through work is among the more liberal for WLS. Saw PCP in Aug; he's in full agreement of my desire for Lap-Band, refers me to a weight management specialist. See weight management specialist in Sept; he concurs and wants a repeat sleep study. In Sept I also have a consultation with sleep specialist and schedule sleep study. In Oct I have my initial consultation w/surgeon. Note: He's new to this area and has to be re-certified by Inamed. Even if approved, this could delay surgery date because he has to have multiple (2-3) surgeries scheduled together before Inamed will send someone to proxy his technique. In Oct I also undergo a repeat sleep study. Although somewhat worse, my apnea still isn't severe enough to treat with a CPAP. Study does confirm that my Restless Leg medication is working perfectly, and also makes specific recommendation of weight loss. I have my psychological and nutrition evaluations in Nov. Both agree that I'm a fine candidate for surgery. I also have blood work done. Good cholesterol is low; bad cholesterol is high; but total cholesterol isn't that bad. Otherwise, my labs are normal. I had my endoscopy last week. There were a couple spots of mild inflammation in the bottom of my stomach that were biopsied. The gastroenterologist seemed completely uncerned about these findings, stating biopsies were standard procedure. Having said all of this, I was told over two weeks that my letter would go out to the insurance as quick as the doctor dictated it. I have called my insurance; they have yet to receive a letter. I called the doctor's nurse practitioner two days ago, and she has yet to return my call. Get me through insurance approval, and I'll be less anxious, even if I should have to wait for a surgery date.

Important Question
azquilter92 replied to newgrandmother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a woman in my support group who had the bypass, she tells us that to maintainher current weight, which by the way she looks awesome, she strictly adheres to 1200 calories without fail.any less she would lose more which she doesnt want to do,. -
3 Days, We were invited to the rehearsal, the wedding day, and the day or return travel. The weight would be off today if I could get outside and run in this Soup, but have to let the foot rest another day. Now that I mentioned it, it probably was the rehearsal dinner that did me in. I did good on the wedding day and the travel day back, but the rehearsal dinner was at an Italian restaurant and they served Veal that was excellent, first time I've had it since surgery.

Well, that's 7,000 extra calories in 2 days....the food must have been REALLY, REALLY good and REALLY, REALLY rich. Seriously, a portion of that is Water being held by your body. You had no control over the preparation of any of the food that you ate all weekend. Likely there was more salt that you use at home. Just drink your water as usual, get what exercise you can (maybe free weights or something like that?) and the 2 pounds will be gone in no time. Weight Watchers says you are good if you are within 3 pounds of goal. You did fine! You just have to rein it in and see what happens. I'm predicting the 2 pounds will be gone by Wednesday or Thursday.

its a good start. maybe after you lose more, you'll want to do more. also - as you start really losing weight, you'll need to ramp it up more to lose the same amount of weight.

Well, I started looking into the lap band proces about a month ago. I have gone to 2 free seminars at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak MI. I took my husband to the second one with me. He is very supportive in this decision and is helping me through the thought process. I am really lucky to have him. I on the otherhand am still not 100% convinced. I need to lose 100 pounds. That is a fact. Can I lose it on my own (again) and keep it off? Most likely not. Do I need a tool to help me get the weight off? Yes, for sure. Do I want to go through bariatric surgery and have my insides re-plumbed.? Not really. So, the Lap Band even with its downfalls (nothing is perfect) seems like the best route to go. So I made my medical exam appointment for April 20, 2009 and I am giving myself til then to make up my mind. I just ordered 3 books from Amazon about the Lap Band which should be a help. That and all the great things I am reading on this very helpful site. I am not hearing a lot of negative, which is a good thing. So that is where I am today. By the way these are the books I ordered: "Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding: Achieving Permanent Weight Loss with Minimally Invasive Surgery" Jessie H. Ahroni Ph.D. A. R. N. P. "LAP-BAND Companion" Mark J. Watson; "Lap-Band for Life" Ariel Ortiz Lagardere

Are There Any Good "post Op" Cookbooks?
Jill Marie replied to jacksmommy719's topic in Food and Nutrition

@@Daisee68 So far I have discovered I maintain at 1200 but if I go over that, I begin gaining. If I drop below it I begin losing again. Like you I would love to know how to get to that 1500 because I feel more satiated there.

Yep. It happened to me when a friend was asking me how it felt after losing so much weight. She commented that no matter what she did, she couldn't get below 160. And I thought to myself, "Wait... I weigh less than 160...how can that be?" I look at her, and she looks to be a perfectly normal weight (we're the same height) but when I look at myself most times, I still see the overweight person I was. Personally, I think it's all the extra skin that's clouding my view in the mirror. <shrugs>

you're down to your original surgery weight because, like most of us, you probably "gained" weight while in the hospital because of all the IV fluids. It can take up to a week for them to work their way out of your system. I've heard of people "gaining" as much as 10 lbs while in the hospital! fluids go through our stomachs really fast since our pyloric valves were bypassed, so I'd be very surprised if you could stretch your stomach from fluids. Maybe you could if you REALLY slammed them, but 40-50 oz over the course of the day isn't "really slamming" them. I've never heard of anyone doing that from drinking fluids, and we were never warned we could stretch our stomachs from that. So...I'm not sure what to say...

he sounds like he's very insecure about your losing weight, I think alot of people are in the same boat - my wife has a jealous streak too - maybe there are some things you can do to include him in your quest to be healthier, go for a walk or bike ride together - as for him holding your secret over your head if push comes to shove tell your secret and defuse the bomb so to speak - just a thought

Completely devastated and disappointed
Trayjay33 replied to greeneyes22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi sorry you had to hear that from your surgeon that was just unnecessary. MFP is pretty good and I think your diet is great overall. It's similar to what I eat actually. But we all go through what's going on moments. Sometimes our body needs more variety or it gets in a pattern of holding on to the weight. At Least that's what I'm telling myself to stay positive. ???? The Lentil soup might have a lot of Protein but I'm not sure about the carb content, might be high. Also, the same with vegetable soup high carbs. As far as fruits I had to switch up from Raspberries and Blueberries to Strawberries and small plums because my body wasn't digesting them properly after a while. I try to stay away from apples most of the time...high in sugar. Another option for fruit is kiwi and/or a 1/2 small blood orange but again in moderation. For yogurt I like the Yoplait 100 and choboni 100. For vegetables just not starchy vegetables corn or potatoes. Also if you are exercising, try getting in adequate calories if possible. It will turn around soon. -

Your surgeon needs a refresher course in sensitivity. I can imagine how frustrating it must be to be following the program and then get accused of blowing it. Don't let him get you down. Your body will release the weight when you figure out what's holding you back. Just approach this logically and methodically. Try to rule out each possible culprit by weighing, measuring and logging your food intake. Keep an exercise journal (or just use MyFitnessPal). Check the lists of side effects on all your medications. Then take all this information to your doctor and/or nutritionist and ask them to evaluate it. -
At one point I even gained a couple of pounds, but the next week they were gone along with a couple more pounds!

Can't exercise! How to not gain weight?
AngelaT replied to Fauxnaif's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
After my surgery my mu;tiple sclerosis symptoms came back...that meant not being able to walk and severe spasms all the time even with meds. I am finally getting better and can walk again with a bit of difficulty. Still have some spams. But i did do what ever i could while sitting down. moving my arms, isometric exercises, gentle sstretching, Moving anything i knew I could Not hurt...i have not lost, but I have not gained since then. I hope by next week I can start to do some moderate exercise. always ask your doctor! -
I was banded 9/29, 2 weeks and 5 days ago. I'm having trouble getting in enough Water. I don't know what to eat. Have started trying some things, carefully, and slowly. Haven't had any problems, but just couldn't take mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs and pintos & cheese, anymore! And I'm not losing!!!! Dr's office said you're not suppossed to right now, this is the month for healing, but it's frustrating just the same. I eat way less then I used to and the scale won't budge, even gained 1 lb back after starting soft stuff. I get my 1st fill 10/28, but I wish I could be losing a little by then. Dr's office suggested low carb diet, so as not to gain back what I've lost, 6 lbs preop, and 6 lbs postop minus the 1 lb I've gained back. :tt1: Now stuck. Lst week was my 1st week back at work, 12 hour shifts as a NICU nurse. So I got through that. Guess now I'll try to start walking. Maybe that will help. Thanks for "listening". Just frustrated. Feeling good though. :tongue_smilie:

My NUT told me pre op, 6 months go to give up diet pepsi forever. No nutritional value. I drank at least 6 a day pre op. have not touched a soda for 7 months. Diet soda is known to trick your body to hold on o fat and makes weight loss slower. I don't know if there is any truth to carbonation stretching your sleeve, but why chance it. Besides, a diet pepsi addict in recovery such as myself cant have just one. Done Did It!

In August I had my last fill of .3 ccs, bringing me to 7.1 total. I felt green for a long time. Then, in December I started to throw up frequently and I had awful acid reflux in the middle of the night. I would wake up choking on acid, gross. So last week I went back to my doctor and he removed .25 ccs. Now I feel like I made a mistake because I'm hungry earlier during the day and later at night than I have been. I'm also able to eat easier, I feel like I'm not restricted enough. Does anyone know if they are able to put in .1 cc? Anyone else have this experience? I definitely don't want to throw up often and have esophageal issues, but I don't want to gain weight either. Help! (I posted this in the basics forum first, sorry if it's a repeat for you.)

Hello Lapband world, I wish I had known about this site months ago--I have read some really good information here. I am about to start my pre-op liquid diet, and I would like to know if anyone has found a truly tasty protein shake? I've researched on the internet and found something called Unjury I've ordered a couple packs of it but have not been able to bring myself to taste them. I am very anxious about the whole process, and scared, and nervous, but very excited! My other big question is will I have the extra skin hanging around like some of my friends who've had gastric bypass surgery? Or because lapband patients are losing weight at a slower pace, is this not a big problem? Looking forward to reading some good advice. Thanks to all who respond.
