A whole lot of Protein!
Brownrek replied to cindymaried's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do protein shakes a week before surgery but never clear liquid until after. I was told 60-80 protein but I am also tall (5'10") and have read in the past that the taller you are the more you need. I am struggling to get the protein in. Good luck -
Visalus...it Has Been A Big Help For Me

I agree they taste great but are soy protein, not whey, and my doc does not recommend. -
Any special supplies I should buy before bypass surgery?
The Greater Fool replied to VRox33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot depends on your plan post-op. A lot of folks are on protein shakes only, a lot aren't. If you're actually eating food, do a test run preparing a post-op meal. You'll see what would make it easier. As a different view, I never used special plates, spoons, forks, or whatever. Because I was on pureed food for 6 weeks, a blender helped. Once you measure 3oz of protein for a week of 3 meals, I was able to accurately eyeball it thereafter. I wouldn't buy any medical stuff unless the Doc says you'll need it. I was open and I didn't have a binder or anything else. Oddly, being OCD I've over prepared for enough things to learn it's best to wait until I have an actual need. I spent a lot of money on things I thought I might need only to have them sit it a closet never used. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Tek -
Any special supplies I should buy before bypass surgery?
catwoman7 replied to VRox33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have a binder with RNY. I did with plastic surgery, but that obviously wasn't laproscopic - I had HUGE incisions with that. things I used a lot: blender, kitchen scale, ramekins (although your measuring cups will work for this. I used my ramekins so I'd know how much I was eating. You can get them in different sizes like 4 oz, 8 oz, etc - but your measuring cups will work for this, too). A baby spoon (I still use one at five years out because I love it!). I also bought individual packets of various protein powders so I wouldn't waste money on huge tubs of powder that I ended up hating. Before surgery, I liked the chocolate and vanilla ones, but after surgery, I found those too sweet (at least for the first few weeks or months). I preferred the fruity ones after surgery - and/or savory ones, like chicken soup-flavored. So get a variety of flavors... -
When and how often did you stall?
TurnThePage replied to AutumnPunkin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't understand parts of your post about sleepers (sleevers?) and spatters. Keep in mind that everyone's journey is unique. There are some patterns like the week 3 stall that many experience, but not all. No point worrying about them at this point. The important thing to accept and remember is that your weight loss chart will look more like a stair case than a ski slope no matter which type of surgery you have, so you have to be patient while your body adjusts to all the changes. There are things you can try, such as increasing your Water, exercise or Protein, but you have to tinker with the balance a bit until you hit a combination that works for you. If you opt to have the surgery and do experience a stall, talk with your surgeon's support staff and check the better message boards for advice. RNY is a wonderful gift of good health, but like all WLS procedures, it is a tool, not a magic bullet. Good luck! -
Average calories in the first few weeks?
CrazyJaney replied to CrazyJaney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine did not like pintos and cheese. I think it was too high in fat. I'm gonna try homemade next time. I ate 2 T of hummus tonight and it was heavenly. If anyone had told me I'd eat hummus without crackers/bread Ida told them they were nuts. But just to taste something not sweet and not soup was heavenly! Not much protein but oh well. -
To continue Protien shakes or not?
sparksrn replied to sparksrn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Mobeans63 I agree with you! I just don't see how you could possibly eat enough Protein, even if all you ate was high quality high protein foods. There just isn't enough room in my little pouch! -
To continue Protien shakes or not?
julia4mom replied to sparksrn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 5 months post op, I am still have 2 shakes a day. I can't eat enough to get all the Protein in that is required without it. The way it is, I only eat protein as I never have enough room to eat any veggies unless I eat them as a snack. I also have fruit as a snack. -
To continue Protien shakes or not?
Homecie replied to sparksrn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have to drink the shakes to get enough protein in. I am 8 months out and plan to drink them forever. My doc does not mind and in fact incourages it if we feel hungry. -
Dr. Jossart, there's a pretty strong current of belief around here that after lap sleeve, it's "impossible" to absorb more than 20g of Protein at a time. This is often used to say that high-Protein shakes, for instance -- say 50g or 60g of protein -- are a waste of money. Many people claim that their doctors and nutritionists gave them this fact. Also, I DO find some reference to protein malabsorption on the net -- for instance, a consent form I found referenced it. However, I searched the medical databases and couldn't find ANY reference to lap sleeve significantly altering protein metabolism (intake, yes, but not basic metabolism). From what I understand, one of the primary "selling points" of the lap sleeve is that it is not malabsorptive. I guess if the smaller, scarred stomach is unable to produce sufficient gastric acids or pepsin or whatever, protein metabolism might be challenging, but that seems a stretch (and I believe it would be noted in literature). I'm starting to think that the "20 grams of protein in a sitting" meme is an urban legend. One possibility is that since the lap sleeve used to be just part of the lap sleeve plus DS procedure, which unless I'm mistaken IS malabsorptive, there may be old data floating around masquerading as current truth. I'd appreciate it if you could shed any light on this, because a lot of people are giving a lot of other people a lot of potentially incorrect advice :lol0:

I had surgery September 25, 2013 and I'm doing well. I've had no major issues except the dreaded problem with gas which comes with gastric bypass surgery. I have lost at least 97 lbs and counting. I don't weigh myself and my last weigh in was at the end of March so I might have lost more. I will get weighed again maybe in May but more likely not till the end of June when,I have my next doctors appointment. My eating is good for the most, part. I still can only eat small amounts of Protein so I have a Quest bar and a Protein shake everyday to supplement. That's all I can think of to say.

Hi surgery twin! Yes, I thought the same thing, but what I’m being told is that it’s not really hunger pangs, it’s gas. I will be so glad when it’s gone. I have been trying to walk so it would expel faster, but I still have a ways to go before it’s completely gone. How are you doing with protein? I can’t get any in because they all make my tummy hurt. I don’t know what to do. 😩

Hello, so here is where I am I have been to my seminars, got the approval from my Insurance, now in order for me to schedule my Surgery Date I must lose 10 pounds by Friday. I have started my Protein shakes but don't know if that will be enough to get the weight off. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Second I am 5'2 230 pounds can anyone with my similar stats tell me how their weight loss went (fast, slow, stalling)? I am getting closer to getting this done and while I have done lot's of research I still have many many questions. Nellybell

Any Road Warriors? Need advice
ElyQuint replied to June 6 Working Mom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I spend a lot of time on the road. I'm low carb high fat so I rely a lot on breve lattes, egg salad wrapped in swiss cheese, nuts, avocados, Cole slaws ect. The hard part is dealing with inevitable leftovers. Without access to a fridge it gets rough. Some protein shakes can be purchased at 7-11 or gas stations. Most hotels have a gym and yoga is always accessible. I do a fair amount of wining and dining. This is rough. I can't drink and eat at the same time. I always schedule apps and drinks so it takes some pressure off. -
Pre-Op / Post-Op Liquid Diet?
scaredoftheunknown posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh I feel so stressed. I am trying to prepare and stock up on things I need for after I have my surgery this week (Thursday OMG!!) and I know we have to has SF Jello, Protein shakes,SF popsicles does the color/flavor matter? but I also read about drinking broth. Any suggestions on the broth? Can I make my own or just buy it? How long do we drink it for? I am just a nut case today trying to sort things out. At least I have all my Vitamins and I found a Protein shake that I like. But I hear that can change after surgery. I know these are all dumb questions but I feel lost and scared of the unknown.. -
Five month stall and hair loss HELP!
Christinamo7 replied to jendolly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think it's fairly normal - I am between 4-5 months and my weight has been staying mostly the same for about 3 weeks. Granted I've had a lot going on (a flare up of auto-immune - steroids - and a death of an immediate family member) but still - stalls are frustrating a bit. When I have been paying attention to other things I noticed my body is really changing - my face and stomach are smaller. Have your measurements changed? now that my immediate trauma's are over it is time for me to get back to my main focus being on my diet (Protein protein protein) and moving my body. gentle yoga and walking for now. I hope to soon hear from you, and experience for myself, that the scale will be moving again too! -
That is great everyone. We will all have to keep in touch an help each other out. I know I am on the countdown already to surgery. Looking at 40 hours till surgery time. Getting very excited. How is everyone doing with pre-op clear liquid diet. So far I am okay not missing the food. Married with 3 kids an meals still have to go on. I am drinking Isopure it has 40 grams of protein in it so I do half a bottle in am and other half at lunch. (tastes and like koolaide) Then tonight I am going to try Injury protein mix at dinner with my sf jello and Popsicle. Hope everyone has great day.

I felt find but I stuck to the proteins and a little broccoli so really nothing that should have caused a problem for me. It was really weird to be staring at a plate that had almost nothing on it and know I wouldn't be able to finish even that little bit...but still yummy!

My surgeon has us do Protein shake for bfast, lunch, and 6oz lean meat w some leafy veggies for dinner. I am on day 8 and the last two days have been very hard to get through with no energy. Started at 290, already down to 278. Is there a corner to turn, or should I just count on being sluggish till mushies are over?

Pre-op vs. Liquid diet
McButterpants replied to my2bys9799's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some patients will have an all liquid diet prior to surgery, some don't. My doc's pre-op diet consisted of 2 Protein shakes and one "lean and green" meal per day. The lean and green meal consisted of 4-5 ounces of lean meat and some vegetables. One thing you will find - many doctors prescribe different pre-op diets for their VSG patients. Also, post-op diets and the re-introduction of food differs from doctor to doctor. -

Any serious weight gain post-goal?
Tiffykins replied to PetCleric's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There's a group on maintenance/veterans sleevesters on obesityhelp. . . There's a couple of VSG'ers that are out 3-5 years out that have seen a 40lb regain and they both reported, major life events (deaths, job layoffs, divorce) and returning to poor eating habits to be the culprit. The highest I've seen is 40lbs, and one lady went back to low carb/high Protein and dropped 15lbs her first month back on the wagon. I know it can happen too, and I'm honestly paranoid about losing baby weight, but I have the comfort in knowing that I won't be metabolically challenged to lose with the weight if I see a significant regain. Best wishes ! ! ! -
Can fluids get stuck #5dayspostop
BLERDgirl replied to js1234567890's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I understand that. What I am saying is there is no reason to run away from vegetables. I was incorporating spinach into my protein drinks from week postop. -
What is a Weight Loss Surgery Card?
MeMeMEEE replied to earthchick97's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Someone mentioned sharing a meal - around here they have a "surcharge" for sharing 6.95-10.95 to share - for that you can get your own meal. My plan is to take it home leftover for my husband. Most appetizer options we have are fried so I would never do that. And unfortunately many nice restaurants have spicy soup options so that isn't an option either. Work with what you have - I sure wouldn't have a problem whipping out my card for that $40 seafood buffet!!
