Frustrated Newbie--HOW DO I KNOW when I'm full?!
DUBrookie03 replied to TheLCSpencer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just a little ahead of you, and I went through all of the same gross foamies, only mine were more like slimes. I thought I was eating slow enough, but what I've discovered moving from mushy to soft foods is that I really need a good 3-5 min in between EVERY bite, and the bites need to be about the size of a nickel. The slower I go, the less I spit up. By comparison, 3oz of yogurt takes me at least 30 min to eat without sliming. Try slowing down even more and see if that alleviates some of the side effects. If you give your body time to make sure it's fully in your pouch, it will be easier to tell when you're done b/c as soon as you feel the feeling in your throat, you'll know. You're feeling it now I think b/c you aren't giving it enough time to fully get down there before taking the next bite. Hope it gets better! -
Full Liquid Diet - What Can I Eat?
Stacey Nicole posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on the full liquid diet now. My dietician gave me a list of 5 things I can have. Most before surgery were great, but with the change in my stomach I can't eat them all now. Her list is skim milk, strained soups made with skim milk, sugar and fat free pudding or yogurt, protein supplements, and no ice cream. So wait.....that's really only 3 things. Please help me!!!! What was or is your favorite thing to eat on the full liquid diet???? I'm going crazy! -
August 25th Bandsters
tkee99516 replied to Twnkl2os's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Guys - I was also banded on 8-25-09. As of today, lost 7 pounds since 8-24-09 (yeah, water weight, but it's a start!). Had no problems. Still have all the energy that I had pre-op. Was on clear liquids for 3 days. Now I'm on full liquids. This means I can eat Grits (yes, I'm a southern girl at heart) with melted cheese, chili (homemade - pureed really well in the blender by adding in chicken broth), yogurts, ice cream (watching the calories & serving size), and drinking a Low Carb Slimfast Protein Drink for breakfast (20 grams of protein). I will stay on this full liquid diet until 2-3 weeks from surgery date. Then it's on to mushies:biggrin: -
August 25th Bandsters
sandiegokate replied to Twnkl2os's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 8/26 and the first couple of days I spent a lot of time in bed. Each day it has gotten better, the last couple of days exponentially. I was on Clear liquids for the first 4 days and then progressed to full liquids that included milk, Protein drinks, yogurt, oatmaeal with a lot of milk, and creamed Soups. I am anxious to move to the next phase. So anxious that I bought yams, rutabaga (I am one of the few that likes them!), turkey, and broccoli and cooked, pureed, and froze them so that I would be ready to move on to them probably by my post op visit next week. I know I will be very busy going back to work next week (home working this week) so I thought it best I prepare ahead. I might make a couple other things that will be ready to go also. Probably butternut squash (bake it with some olive oil...need some good fats), possibly lean ham steak or turkey ham ground (my friend did that for baby food and it turned out pretty good). We'll see.... So far all food and drink is going down well. Today I have been trying to make sure to "follow the rules" and not drink before eating or for 45 minutes after. By doing this I am able to notice the "full" feeling. I have been drinking a Protein shake (either a ready to drink or an unjury or muscle milk or ??) before each meal, to insure that I get the amount of protein that I need every day. I am not hungry until I am suppose to be, at a meal time, and I am satisfying it, and losing weight, so...So far so good!!! As of today I am down 22 lbs since starting pre-op diet on 8/15 and 8 lbs since the operation. I know this rate of loss won't continue but it is a nice start!!:smile2: -
Hello ...... I am new to this so please bare with me..lol ... I was just banded on Thursday, August 27th so I can completely empathize with you guys. I have had to deal with the same problems such as gas and chest pain and that is not fun : ( I am just stumped on exactly what I can add to my diet . I have been on broths, sugar-free popsicles and sugar-free jello since my surgery and I was wanting to see if you guys started eating yogurt, oatmeal or eggs that early.... I am actually hungry ..... Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Anyone in the South Shore MA area need a buddy?
Crystal Leigh replied to Crystal Leigh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lol thanks! This definitely put a smile on my face even though a lot of what you just said kind of scares the crap out of me! I LOVE myself some dunkies and or marylous! I recently started doing the sugar free shots not swirls and skim milk or sugar free creamer at home.. (They have me starting to get ready for what life's going to be like after surgery) everything I a huge change. I'm doing pretty good so far. Can I express how proud I am of myself for a moment? 1. I drank Mountain Dew faithfully for 12 years I'm talking 24 packs in a day! I've been Mountain Dew clean for almost 4-5 months now! I drink only Water and one coffee a day! Forced myself! I can't imagine it any other way now! 2. I have been a smoker since I was 6 years old (discussing I know! I have older nephews so if I smokes with them they knew I couldn't snitch on them!) I couldn't inhale until I was 8 but either way.. I'm 30 now.. I haven't had a cigarette in a week now!!! I don't even really care! That's the shocking part! I think I'm to concerned with my eating to think about smoking lol 3. I used to lay in bed and feel sorry for myself not move at all. Hence being almost 400lbs at one point I've been moving more even little things I have stairs that lead up to the bathroom... I so ten push-ups off the stairs before I can pee lmao and I have three kids all under 5 so.. Enough said there. I do jump and jacks with my 4 year old ( or what I consider to be jump and jacks ) I have cheated on this diet a little bit but when I've cheated it's been two extra pieces of celery or an extra scoop of low fat Greek yogurt.. Not an extra bowl of Pasta with extra sauce and bacon and chicken like used to. I'm proud of me Thank you for listening to my rant and thanks for all the advice!! I'm going crazy over here cuz I don't even know if they are going to give me a date yet! I'm still waiting! All I know is they put me on this diet and she said it's what I will be on for the rest of my life after surgery basically (minus the time I'm on the liquid diet) I just want a date now! I need to know!! I think I'm more nervous not knowing if I will get a date... I need this! I need to live and stick around for my kids! -
Glad you are doing well! My surgery was Wed and got to come home last night! I am doing great (though don't want to jinx myself) even tried 2 oz. greek yogurt and Protein shake before I left the hospital and all went well! Keep up the good work "losers"

I want to practice 100 mg protein
catwoman7 replied to tarathorn87's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get over 100 grams in every day. It's not that hard if you focus on protein first and have protein at every meal. I'll usually have Greek yogurt in some form for breakfast, often a protein shake as a mid-morning snack, something like cottage cheese or a couple of chicken skewers for lunch, some other kind of protein as a mid-afternoon snack (a couple of baby bell cheese things, or light & fit yogurt), then usually meat and vegetables for dinner (I really don't need the mid-morning protein shake to get over 100 - but it guarantees that I do, and then I don't have to think about getting in all my protein for the rest of the day - by adding a shake, I know I'll be over 100 by the end of the day. Plus, I'm one of those who happens to like protein shakes...) -
*Susan* revision from band to sleeve
hakunamatata_ca replied to *susan*'s topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Wow I didn't know this. I thought after surgury you drink protein drinks which are dairy based? I guess yogurt will not be a soft food either. I need to find out what everyone is eating after surgury?? Any input for me? Susan - that is terrible for you. I hope it all works out very soon. -
I would recommend trying different brands of greek yogurt. I've heard great things about the Trader Joe's greek yogurt. I like the Yoplait greek yogurt and the Lucerne brand (store brand). I bet if you really want to have cereal you could mix some cereal into your yogurt (just not too much so you don't get too many carbs). What about cottage cheese? It has a lot of Protein and is pretty easy on the tummy.

Hi - I find that I wake up hungry so I always eat some sort of breakfast. (But I don't have to get up as early as you!) I will eat one of the following - premier Protein shake -oikos yogurt (15 grams of protein) + a tiny bit of high protein Go Lean crunch Cereal in it + a few strawberries or blueberries - 2 eggs and a bunch of veggies mixed in - leftover piece of chicken - if I want something that I can really chew that feels like breakfast food, I'll have some go lean crunch cereal + milk I do try and get at least 25 grams of protein in for breakfast. It keeps me full and not wanting to graze by 9 or 10am.

I feel like Indiana Jones on a search for the Holy Grail of flavor satisfaction. At first, when I found a gem, I would repeat eating it, but would eventually tire of it. I now search for the spark of flavor, then store that info in memory, coming back to that food only periodically. A few of my gems are Progresso Tomato Basil soup, Kippered Seafood Snacks, shrimp w/ cocktail sauce, Hormel tamales, garlic mashed potatoes, and pork chop. Almonds, sunflower seeds, cashews, mixed tropical fruit, LF yogurt, potato salad & cottage cheese are welcome and enjoyed. I love pickles & pepperocillies, but have not attempted them yet. Being Labor Day, I'm BBQing a steak today, making deviled eggs, and preparing some seasoned potato wedges. Portion sizes will be the most disheartening, but I know what my limits are. I will abide by the wisdom of the regemine and celebrate wisely. Have a Great Holiday Weekend...

I hate to throw out food so I have been just buying the smaller size options at the grocery store so that I only buy what I will use before it goes bad. Like just a few individual yogurts and just a half pound turkey from the deli, etc.

I had a hard time on puree/soft to get enough food and Protein in. I started adding unflavored Protein powder to anything that it would mix into. I froze Syntrax Protein drinks into ice-pop tubes to boost fluids and protein intake. I kept up with the Protein shakes to give myself a good protein base to work from, and added the puree/soft foods on top of that. I ate stuff like refried Beans with cheese, lots of greek yogurt, and made up protein powder with 1/2 the liquid to make pudding. I also found later that Fairlife milk has quite a bit more protein than regular milk, so I've switched to that to boost my intake. It's hard to get all the protein in to start with, and the calories stayed very low for me until I was on a full diet. My doc said my #1 priority is fluids, and my #2 priority is protein, and for the first 2-3 months post-op that's all she wanted me worried about.

Anyone with Surg between Nov 13th and Nov 18th
dbrjredd replied to steeler's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Steeler, The unjury chocolate & strawberry Protein shakes are very good. I haven't tried the vanilla but I'd be willing to bet it's ok too. I mix them with skim milk & it's tolerable to me. The unflavored I've added to my soups & I can't even tell it's in there. Also, I've seen other posts by Tiffykins about Greek yogurt so u might wanna check into that. Have you started with your sublingual Vitamin B-12? I did a few days ago & I can already tell a difference in my energy level. I'm assuming its the B-12 bcuz I couldn't hardly get up & put one foot in front of the other without tiring easily b4 taking them but doing super well now! ! I have finally gotten rid of all the trapped air that was causing me misery so therefore I feel like living! Keep us posted. Rhonda -
I've tried doing the meal prep stuff and I've found my way around it successfully Meal #1: any flavor Oikos triple zero yogurt (Salted caramel is amazing) = $1.09 Meal #2: 1/2 cup cottage cheese = $0.50 Meal #3: 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter powder (buy from nuts.com) $0.50 Meal #4: Starkist tuna meal pack = $1.89 Meal #5: !/2 Premier protein shake (DOESN'T TASTE LIKE THE DREADED PROTEIN lol) It has 30 grams of protein 1 gram of sugar and is a delicious milkshake = $2.30 (full shake cost) Sam's Club has the BEST price I don't have a membership as I'm single and eating like a bird. Meal #6: finish off remaining premier protein shake (these shakes are perfect during work hours) Meal #7: 2 low fat cheese sticks and small apple = $1.25 Total daily cost: $7.53 - $8.00 daily be sure to add fiber to 2 water breaks during the day to combat the constipation from the protein!

2 Weeks Post Op And Having A Hard Time W/ Soft Foods
It's all new replied to peacelovenkarma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am about a week ahead of you and am having similar struggles. Yogurt and poached eggs work, tuna is iffy. I tried ground beef and it was a BAD idea even though the Dr. included it in my diet. It feels like I'll be living on this for a while. You are not alone! -
2 Weeks Post Op And Having A Hard Time W/ Soft Foods
peacelovenkarma posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Anyone else out there experience this? I did great with liquids, then creamed soups and yogurts, but this is day 2 of being on soft/ground foods and I feel nauseas when I eat. I have tried chicken salad, turkey meatballs with sauce, scrambled eggs. I don't know if it's the foods or what? I need to eat because if not I need to drink protein shakes, and I'm getting very tired of them! Any help, or advice would be great! -
I saw the NUT today for my B12 shot and check up.. She did a metabolism breath test and recommended I eat more! First time I've ever heard that. I do track and measure everything and had been averaging between 1200-1400 cal a day. She said 2200 if I want to stop maintain and 1700 if I want to keep losing slowly. I'm going to aim for 1800 and start eating 2% yogurt and milk instead of fat free. That should help with feelings of fullness. My usual routine is: latte, yogurt, muesli, fruit, in the morning; cheese or tuna with veg and/or a slice of bread for lunch; soup packed with veg protein, beans, lentils, etc for dinner. Snacks: Annie's Crispy Bars, little bit of dark chocolate (my major splurge), Enlighten ice cream bar. I definitely get in all my protein and usually get in my fluids.

I was sleeved on the 4th. I was to begin softs- eggs, cheeses, Peanut Butter, yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, soy milk- this past Monday. I am having such a hard time getting my fluids in that my doc wants me to add another Protein shake to the 1 I'm already doing and just work on my fluids. He says to try stuff as I feel up to it. Laughing cow cheese wedge and a mozzarella cheese stick have gone down okay. Took forever to eat tho. I just tried a taste or two of peanut butter and so far so good. Completely creamy Soups seem to be alright. Have to go very slow w/those tho. Monday, I can add tuna, canned chicken, Beans, fish, seafood, nuts. Not sure. I'm looking forward to tuna. Hope it goes well! LOL! I was told to re-start everything 5 days out. Everything I have is chewable. I've heard others say they started right away while others were told to wait longer than I was.

I like greek yogurt or string cheese if I am feeling hungry. Usually it's just the sweet tooth though, so it's time for those sugar-free popsicles!

Help! How do I stop the cycle of binging?! :(
pink dahlia replied to Quasar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone s different, what works for one wont work for another, so choose whats right for you. All the above posts are full, of great helpful advice, so here goes another piece of advice. Try journaling daily the details of what you eat. Time , type of food, occasion, feelings, satisfaction etc. After awhile you'll notice a pattern, maybe ? I noticed that I didn't crave sweets in the AM, but really wanted them late afternoon or evening. So I keep some frozen yogurt bars and other healthy treats in the house for those times. Im not perfect, I still have stuff I shouldn't sometimes, but being aware and listening to my bodys wants and needs helps alot when im craving something. Am I really craving it, or am I tired, stressed, sad, overwhelmed ?? Hope this helps, good luck ! -
I change up my Snacks super frequently because I get bored pretty quickly. I've found that the 100 calorie packs are a little too expensive for my liking. So I'll buy a few different things each week. When I get home, I open the bag (or box) and portion them out into individual ziploc bags. That way everything is portion-set per bag and I don't have to think about anything in the morning when I'm still half asleep getting ready for work. I just grab stuff from the fridge and pantry and get on my way. I also keep a few things at work because that's where I get into trouble (if I don't come to work prepared, I eat HORRIBLY). Like everyone else, fruits and veggies are good. You can go back to kindergarden and rock some ants on a log (celery with pb and rasins), chips are my weak point so I don't indulge in them often but there's one called pirates booty (think cheese puffs but healthier) and those are great. Nuts. Granola. My favorite part about my grocery store is the bulk candy/snack aisle because I can make my own "trail mix" with sunflower seeds, nuts, dried fruits, et al. I usually throw a few m&m's in there to keep my sweet tooth happy as well. Snak paks are good but like anything else, get old after a while. Cheeses. Yogurts. Veggie chips. If you have a sweet tooth... try getting low fat cinnamon graham crackers and fat free cool whip. Split a graham cracker in half, make a sandwich using the cool whip in between. Put a bunch of these in a tupperware container and freeze them. The graham cracker gets a little softer and the cool whip freezes so it makes a make-shift ice cream sandwhich. No lie, they're REALLY good. Don't know the calories or fat but it's not high and I seem to remember it being very low. Definitely nice to mix it up at night when you need something sweet after dinner.

Per my doc eat slowly until you feel satified. Although in the pureed stage, I was told not to worry about calories or protein, but make sure and get all my water in. Liquids went down easy for me from day one. I think I started with a 1/4 cut but it didnt take long until I could handle a 1/2 a cup. Keep in mind the diet really doesnt start until you can eat solids. Once there high cal liquids are taboo. I also found that creamed soups did not sit well. I did better on low sodium vegtable soups ran through the blender and greek yogurt.
