    Lapband or Vertical Sleeve

Thanks y'all, sleeve seems very scary to me, but I am banded and doing well, and not making the decision. mskissty, you are correct, everyone needs to research for themselves and make an informed decision. But I don't want to be on here and "bad mouth" sleeve or bypass just because I feel the band was right for me. Thus my questions to those who are researching it now. Most likely you who have made your desisions will go on to VSG boards and support eachother there. Best wishes to the soon to be sleevers out there! Denise

confused and in need of advice

You shouldn't choose a WLS by geography. The band helps a certain type of over-eater, bypass another. They aren't "one size fits all" and you should get the surgery that fits your needs, personality, lifestyle. For example if you have a big sweet tooth, bypass is probably "better" for you because of the dumping syndrome. If you graze or snack, again bypass is better for you because if you graze or snack then the band can effectively be made to fail (depending on what and how much etc) Conversely, if your problem is huge portions, the band is the surgery for you. Research and soul searching are indicated! Having said that, there's a forum lower down about how to research a surgeon in Mexico. I'm sure that, like here in the USA, some are competent, and some are just WL mills. I personally wouldn't go across the border but that's just me. Also if you decide to go, pick an area that is relatively crime free. Perhaps those of you who live farther north in our great country don't realize the drug strife that's going on down there right now, but it's real. I grew up in El Paso (across from Juarez) Juarez was just another seedly sleepy border town, baking in the sun shine, when I grew up. Now it is the most violent city on earth, or so our local news said. Even allowing for hype, it's dangerous. BUT not all cities in Mexico are hot beds of unrest and crime! Again, research is in order. Lastly if you do get the lap band and do go out of country, make SURE you line up aftercare locally or plan to always go BACK to Mexico for fills and follow up appointments. The lap band requires adjustments and attention during the first few months to one year. If you don't get the fill level right the lap band doesn't work. Some lucky people hit that in one or two times, some take much longer. It is imperative to have handy care nearby (or the funds and time to hop a plane or into a car to go "back" if you have surgery done away from home) This isn't just a "Mexico" thing either. If you have surgery done in another city or county, most surgeons in your home won't treat you. They don't want to inherit (and potentially be liable for) someone else's work or mess. So...If you go to Mexico choose who and where carefully. Line up local fills and aftercare before you go. If you are unsure about bypass vs band, then do research and decide which (if either) is right for you. Good luck!
  5. Hello all and please excuse if this question is in the wrong forum.... I'm relatively new to the process, have had some appts and have 3-4 more to go. When I initially met with my to be surgeon, he said I would probably qualify for all the procedures (BMI 48 with few other medical problems). First, I thought the sleeve was the best, seemed less invasive, etc. But, now I am understanding that I will need to take Vitamins with both ( one or two more doesn't seem like a big deal), major dietary changes with both and the recovery time doesn't seem that much longer with the bypass PLUS the overall success rate seems better with the bypass. I do understand the bypass comes with additional risks. But, as this is a long complicated process, I want to make sure it sticks and long term success is my overall goal. What made you select the bypass over the sleeve? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

    Gastric bypass over sleeve

I did the bypass because the thought of losing 85% of my stomach which is to held by staples scare me.
  7. I got the lapband Sept 2004. Around December 2005 I started having pain issues in my body and by May 2006, I was a total mess. I've spent the last few years in severe daily chronic pain and taking oxycontin and still not having relief. I had a team of 6 doctors and lots of loving friends and family and no one could figure out what was wrong with me. 9 months ago I figured it out. My body rejected the lapband.. not slippage, erosion, or psychological intolerance.. true full-on rejection which is pretty rare. I'm being revised to VSG on Friday and I cannot wait for my new life to begin. Yes, what happened to me is rare, but all the other problems are WAY TOO COMMON. You're the only one who can make the decision for you. Do your research and make the best choice for yourself, but please remember my story in case you need to know it later. *hugs*
  8. I had a failed sleeve - I did drop about 60 lbs with it but then started to gain. It was so stretched out. I lost a further 50 lbs with bypass. I’m now looking to do a distal to help shed the remainder of this weight I just can’t get off.
  9. I am near 2 months out from Bypass to bypass revision. Weight loss is slower this time around, but I'm actually glad of it. It is consistent and manageable- I feel good. My vitamin levels have been stable - a million times better than after my original bypass. I have a long way to go yet, but so far, worth it.
  10. My doctor will not do ESG on anyone who hasd previously had a gastric balloon as there is a high failure rate there, but do they know why the stitching had come apart? Did your surgeon do a bad ESG eg too loose stitching? Do you know how many ESGs they have done and what that surgeon's failure / revision rate is? I am a member of three facebook ESG groups and while there are people on there who haven't had success or much success there are so many more who have lost plenty of weight many longterm and maintaining. There are many reasons for failure just as VSG or RNY fail and until the reason is determined we can't say ESG (or even VSG and RNY) is a waste of money.
  11. Jaffa

    5 Reasons

I chose the band. 1. Because it was approved for me to do it, and I have restrictions that don't allow me to do anything else at this time. 2. I knew my main problem was portion control, and it seemed like it would do a good job of helping me with this. (it has) 3. I was more then willing to do the things necessary to lose the weight according to the band rules. I just didn't want to yo yo diet anymore. 4. I could have it done quickly and be back to work quickly 5. I could afford it, and was desperate. My wife on the other hand will be getting gastric sleeve. 1. Because her eating issues are strong cravings and bad decisions. Hopefully, the sleeve will better help with this, as the band really doesn't do anything for this. 2. She also has trouble with portion control. 3. She would never do well, with the stuck episodes and would revert to soft foods to avoid them. (she wouldn't follow band rules) 4. She also wouldn't do well with fills and aftercare. She is really good about doing things she is told for a couple of months, but then will get frustrated and quit. The sleeve post op diet is very strict, but she will follow it to the T. 5. Aftercare costs are much less with the sleeve. 6. Bypass, is totally not going to happen. It just doesn't get rid of the hormone producing part of hunger which is why most of us are overweight. It also has too many aftercare issues that can happen from malnutrition.
  12. RestlessMonkey

    5 Reasons

    1. I'm worried about malabsorption issues as I age. Older people are at greater risk for malnutrition anyway; rerouting my guts so I can live longer just to be malnourished seem at best ill advised. 2. My husband's been an RN for 25+ years and worked in a GI lab for a chunk of that time. By Pass patients have MANY GI issues. It stands to reason...because of the nature of the surgery....and I didn't want to trade one problem or disease for another. 3. I couldn't stand the thought of my stomach sewn shut but just sitting inside me...still producing acid, but closed off from everything. Seems unhealthy and just WRONG and in a way it is; you're just blocking it off but it's still there. 4. The band is reversible so that if I need to be able to eat more, for whatever reason, or if I had just "flipped out" and been unable to adapt, it could be removed. As an Adjunct to that, because they ARE researching obesity and may come up with a better intervention some day...the band can be removed so I can opt for the "better" new thing. If it ever happens. 5. At 5 years out, lap band patients and bypass patients have similar weight loss (55% - 60% of their excess weight) but bypass patients have more medical issues. 6. With the band I can still eat foods I love, just in moderation. I am more "normal". Bypass patients often have things like dumping syndrome, for example, where if they eat sweets they have symptoms much like a panic attack or heart attack. I, on the other hand, can have a piece (albeit a small one!) of birthday cake on my birthday and not need a trip to the ER. 7. Down the road if I lose a lot and start gaining, I can always get my band filled a little more. Bypass patients...if you stretch out your tiny tummy, you're screwed. Even the one big NO NO for bandsters...carbonation...many successful bandsters more than a year or so out can indulge if they want. So I may life a glass of champagne at my 70th birthday, and have a bite of cake, and not have any GI upsets or be malnourished. Those are just some of the biggies for me.

    My intro

Two years ago I signed up on here, and started my journey for the lap band. 1 1/2 months in to my pre op I found out I was pregnant. I put everything on hold and was blessed with my baby girl. We had 3 boys before her. So now our family is complete, my tubes are tied. And I'm back on my journey. My heaviest weight was 325 right after my daughter was born. 1/28/13. One year since my daughter has been born I decided on New Years to call my surgeon and start again. This time I have changed my mind, I don't want the lap band now, but I'm going for the gastric bypass. The day I called my surgeon I weighed in at 313. Today I weigh 290. I'm doing well on my pre on diet, I've lost 23lbs in the last month. I joined the gym, and go regularly. Between 4 and 5 days a week for 1 1/2. I started the c25k program. After killing myself walk/jogging on the treadmill for an hour, and completing 3miles. I use the pool to swim laps. My challenges is the food. I'm doing it. But I'm a big foodie! I garden etc. ohh and I forgot to mention I'm a baker! Yeah I know! Do I make wedding cakes etc. so I'm ok with healthier food, but I'm training myself to not eat like I use to. I miss bring FULL. I'm using my fitness pal, and weilos! And looking forward to surgery in May!

    Feeling disappointed and unsure

Do your research on the bypass just as u did the sleeve then decide and it is your decision not the PA not the Dr don't be bullied they aren't having the procedures or living with it after

    So upset

I want to tell everyone that I was approval for surgery...... The wrong one I wanted the sleeve but my Dr. Submitted the gastric bypass to the insurance . What should I do? Im so pissed right now I don't know if the insurance will approve the sleeve now it took three weeks to hear from them . Does anyone know the pros and cons of the gastric bypass and the sleeve ?

    5 Reasons

The most obvious difference is that the band can be adjusted after surgery as per your requirement. Because lap band surgery is minimally invasive, the scars are minimal compared to gastric bypass surgery. Patients usually have less pain, shorter hospital stays and a shorter recovery period. The lap band surgery for loosing weight has fewer risks and side effects compared to gastric bypass surgery.

    Gastric bypass over sleeve

Welcome @@Good apple I initially went into the process dead set on the sleeve. I too had no compelling medical conditions, and was given the choice of either the sleeve or bypass. My BMI when l started the process was 46, but by the time I got to surgery it was a high 39. I had a number of reasons for finally opting for the bypass. One was the GERD issues that some, but definitely not all, experience with the sleeve as post ops. There are even a few who have had to revise from sleeve to bypass for this very reason. I just didn't want to take the chance that I might be one of the unlucky ones to develop this issue. I don't think I could have handled the possibility of a revision down the line. I also thought that I might benefit more having the restrictive and malabsorption components working together to help me reach my ultimate goal weight, and more importantly, maintain it. I had a very wicked sweet tooth and knew the mere "prospect" of dumping would aid me in keeping that in check. I was never really concerned about the Vitamin deficiencies as I've always taken them. Now at five months out I can say in all honestly that I made the right decision. I feel better than I ever have, have more energy, and I'm only 22 pounds away from goal. I've never dumped, had no complications, an easy recovery, and I stick to a very healthy diet. I finally kicked a lifetime soda habit, don't eat bread, Pasta, rice, or sweets. I never could have accomplished any of this on my own, because I've certainly tried. I was always hungry before, no matter how much I ate, but now I'm in control of my life again. It is amazing, simply life changing. I feel reborn! Either procedure is great. If the sleeve had been my only option I would have taken it in a second. But I had a choice and this was the best one for me. Good luck!

    Freakin' out at last minute

I totally understand how you feel!! On the one hand you have all the postives, no more port issues, tightness etc... and a wonderful sleeve to takes its place which I'm sure is what you and I both looked for when we got our bands... a permanent decision. On the other hand because we are revisions we run a higher risk for complications, leaks etc. That is a fact, we do have to think of these things, but I am willing to take that risk anyday rather than waiting for my band to erode through my stomach or just simply cause even more damage than it has already done. Or we can simply have our bands removed and gain the weight back and regain all the unhealthy disadvantages that come along with obesity. No... I don't think that's an option for either of us. Hugs!! You will do amazing, and trust me - there are some of us here who do and are going through the same thing as you. Now, I'm nervous but I'm sure as the date draws nearer I'll get ever more increasingly scared. It's a big deal! It's very normal. Please check in as soon as you are up to it and let us know how it went. You will be ok!!!
  19. Hang in there Carrie! I'd be worried about you if you weren't nervous about the surgery. I can't speak from my own experience, but a friend of mine was sleeved about 8 months ago and it was a pretty straightforward experience for her. Good news too--I won my appeal with Premera BCBS--based on medical necessity. A revision would seem to fit that ticket. Good luck and I'll send good thoughts your way- Fit
  20. I had my band in Jan. 2007. I had issues from the start, even though I lost around 45 - 50 pounds. I had my revision done just 2 months ago and all I can say is, WOW!!!!! What a difference! I feel better, eat better and have had zero complications. If any of you have a Facebook page, there's a great page called "Failed Lap-Bands and Realize Bands" and there is so much information about issues with the band and most of the folks on there have had revisions or are in the process of getting one. I would highly recommend it!
  21. I had my LapBand removed and revised to sleeve on 10/18/16. Wish I had done it sooner. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Having Band Removed Insurance question.

Hello lessismore, I am in the same process as you. I went to the MD today and after trying for 18 months to loose wieght we desided I should have a revision. Something we have been talking about for a year although he wishes I would keep trying to make the band work. I have a choice and the revision is already approved. I am just torn about my options. I asked for the Duodenal Switch and he thought I would have a lot of problems... long term and suggested the Gastric bypass and then we talked about the sleeve. I am scheduled for August 15 at 7 am. I am afraid if I do not do the bypass piece I might regret it. Yet, I weigh 242 most days and he thinks no matter what I do I will loose 60-70 pounds which is okay for me. It was hard today because I wanted him to take the Fluid out of the band so I could eat but the last time we did that I gained 20 pounds. He would like me to keep trying and talked about only taking a small amount of saline out and that we might hit the magic spot. I agreed because unless I wanted the band removed and no more wls he was clear loosing more weight would be ideal and that gaining so was not an option. I ended up falling apart after the appointment. I don't cry often but today I did. I am so disappointed that the band did not work for me and that I have struggled so hard with only lost 60 pounds. Now, I will face another surgery. I am torn about which one. I am so tired and I feel so discouraged most of the time but I will move forward. The doctor suggested I might be consuming more calories than I think. I offered to write it all down and let him take a look next time we meet. It seems the story of my life is someone saying are you sure your not eating more...are you exercising.... He was nice about it but it was hard for me. So for me I am facing surgery a week before school starts for my two girls and then my son goes a week later to preschool. The timing is a bit off but I am really tired of not eating and not loosing weight. We were going to put it off until they were settled in but not eating is really shoving me over the edge. If I am going to suffer I should at least be loosing weight. It is so funny because I am doing all this so I can get a hip replacement. I just want to feel better and be better for my family. I want a better quailty of life. Take care, Taylorrae9

    Appeal?!?

I had seurgery for the Lapband May 2010. I lost 80 lbs and have gained it back plus more. I called my ins and they said that bypass is covered (it wasn't at the time of my band). I have completed all my requirements needed in order to be considered for the surgery but today I found out that the ins only pays for one WLS per lifetime. Will I have a chance if I appeal? The denial has NOT been received yet and I am hoping that it will still be approved based on all the documentation. Any ideas? Thoughts?
  24. Hi Everybody! My name is Kati and I am in Eureka, Ca. I am pre-op gastric bypass, and will be having my surgery done at UCSF with Dr. Carter (has anyone else had him???) My pre-op appt is June 7, and I have a tentative surgery date of June 26, which will be finalized at the pre-op appointment. I have yet to have my info sent to insurance, but the medical assistant at the surgeon's office has reviewed my file and has determined that I have met all of the insurance requirements, fingers crossed! I have to travel 5 hours for my surgery, and then home after, and am a bit nervous about that. Has anyone else had experience with this? I have been overweight since my teenage years, but my dysfunctional relationship with my body and food began long before. I remember thinking I was fat at age 4. My highest weight ever was 330. I am currently vacillating between 315 and 321. I am scared most right now about insurance covering it, I have Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield in CA. Anyone else have experience with them? I look forward to learning from and getting to know ya'll!

    why are people such HATERS!!!!???

GG......you go for it!!!!! Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. I'm LIVING proof that it can! Before my lap band surgery, I had several people tell me I was too heavy and it wouldn't work for me. I made my mind up then and there I was going to show then all and I have. One of the ones that said that to me had the gastric bypass and now...she's gained nearly all her weight back and actually is checking into getting a lap band. So, don't let what anyone says make you doubt for a nanosecond your decision. With your attitude, you will do great! Good luck and stick to your guns!
