  1. i'm also on a diet that restricts meat - i wondered the same thing, but have elected to just follow my doctor's requirements so that when i show up next thurs for surgery i'm good to go. i wonder if maybe part of it is that the Protein Shake can deliver the protein in a leaner way? less calories, fat, cholesterol, etc?
  2. I ate the toddler meat sticks, chicken and turkey.. Very soft and was tasty and had good protein
  3. I'm one month post op and by week 2 I was hungry but once I drank a protein shake or ate cream soup the hunger was gone.
  4. I'm in a bad way...and need help. Just had surgery on the 24th and a couple days after I was fine with just Water..couldn't really eat....but after about 4 or so days I was starving...so I tried my luck on soft scrambled eggs...I could tolerate 2-3 little bits and then get a sharp pain in my stomach which caused me to stop..but I noticed the sharp pain was a big burp trying to come out..but wouldn't...I tried a bite of cottage cheese same thing....I even stuck a small piece of chick in my mouth chewed it up really good..but another burping pain....I'm not getting my water in either. My NUT called to see how I was doing and I told her good and she said to make sure I don't eat any foods yet as the food will cause a leak...well I immediately stopped and on Protein drinks again..only able to drink 2 Protein shakes a day...they are way too sweet and making me gag...still not getting all my water in ...today marks the 9th day and I don't feel as if I have lost anything at all...physically I am feeling fine...but mentally I am miserable....I don't know what to do. I go back to work tomorrow..perhaps getting back to the swing of things might help...but otherwise...

    Feeling down

Even the anesthesia has can affect your emotions....just think about all the drugs that were pumped in to you! Also your body is changing metabolically, depending on the preop diet you did. I did three protein shakes a day with drastic carb drop and only 300calories a day! I felt like crap but by the end of the first week I could feel the changes-fluid began disappearing. Remember one thing-food WASN'T your friend. I did the same thing- ate because I was depressed- made me feel better for a short time, then depressed about my weight so I aye to feel better. It's a difficult cycle to break. Many changes are taking place in your body. Just take one day at a time and let's tell ya...when that scale starts dropping, it is a high that no drug and no food can duplicate! Nothing tastes as good as skinny is going to feel!! Remember we are all here for you as well!
  6. I think if most people would clarify with their doctor what they mean by 'snacking', they'd find their doctors and nuts are referring to junk food snacking. There is absolutely *nothing* wrong with eating a healthy Protein snack (cheese, hard boiled egg, etc.) mid-morning, mid-afternoon and mid-evening. Not only are you working at getting your protein in, but you're also helping to keep your blood sugar stable. When our blood sugar swings, we crave and we're hungry. Going too long between meals starts the swing. Personally, I'm too busy to stop and eat but I know I need that stabilization, so I drink an EAS ready to drink Protein Shake for my mid-meals. They're 110 calories, 4 carbs and 17 protein. If I have time and I'm where I can do it, I'll mix up an Isopure chocolate shake (GNC) because for 1 scoop, they're also 110 calories, 1.5 carbs and 25 protein. On the days when I forget, I can look back at that day and know exactly where it all fell apart. .
  7. I had this too... don't worry you will go eventually. I don't recommend the lax.. try fruit juce. prune juice or as someone on he swears by warm apple juice. Much kinder to do it this way I think... I used the lax option....and wished I hadn't lol.
  8. @@gpmed - Glad it helped! I had a few food dreams too! Wake up scared to death I ate potato chips and drank a soda! Oh and once you get to solid food, the Protein gets a lot easier too, but again I just asked my NUT maybe 2 weeks ago, if it is was ok for me to still be drinking 2 shakes a day if I needed to get to my goal and she said absolutely and as long as I was still getting some protein with my food and not a lot of carbs.

  10. So I retired last Thursday on December 31st, was sad, took over full time house duties so my wife could focus on starting her career, I have a planner and do their school and appointments, cook dinner and wash and maintain the house, ironically my 8+ hour days became 14-16 hours, but I'm catching on, January 10th will be my 7 month surgerversary, I'm probably at 254 from 388 in January 2015, taking my vitamins and protein, no gym last two weeks due to shoulder injury and we are in transition from insurances so no surgeons visits til March or April, but overall very content and vigilant with my progress, I figured December would be my make or break, my weight loss has slowed significantly, but I'm still going strong, to all those thinking of or just having had surgery, I don't regret a single minute, and it really is life changing, very rarely when I question it because I can't eat something or couldn't finish my meal I just remind myself that if I had none done this I would have had a heart condition or diabetes by now and my choices would have been taken away forever, I've had a piece of cake, drink of soda, and an occasional beer, but with wise moderation and only once a month, nowhere near what I used to drink or eat, and I really stick to my healthy diet 90% of the time, here's to another great year, and good luck on your journeys, my new milestones for this year 1. Hit 195 goal weight by summer or close 2. Be in an XL shirt by April 3. Save for a kayak if possible

    weight gain because of surgery

I was also banded on the 15Th & have had a 4 pound increase from the day I went in. I'm sure it must be all the IV fluids. I cant see any other way I could have gained. I was 15 lbs down from the slim fast diet I did 2 weeks prior to surgery and the day before I was only allowed clear liquids. Since surgery all I have had is liquids power aid, cranberry juice cocktail and a couple of slim fast optima shakes. I think I will try some cream of chicken soup for dinner tonight. I don't know how U all feel but I really have no appetite at all ,and I'm having a hard time getting the required liquids in. But I was allowed nothing by mouth for over 30 hours after surgery cuz I had to wait for my swallow test and then for the doc to approve. So the first time I even got water was around 3pm yesterday. I wonder when hunger will kick in? What all are u guys eating/ drinking to get ur protein in to keep from getting weak? I don't want to get dehydrated or malnourished but I also don't want to hurt the band !!! Any input would be much appreciated.

    Protein Amounts

My daily limits are as follows: Proteins 60 to 80 grams a day, but I stick closer to the 60 gram limit Carbs no more than 100 grams a day Fats no more than 30 grams a day, with at least 10 grams of "good" fats at one meal. (Olive oil, flax seed oil etc.) As for hair loss, I've heard that it levels off at about 6 months post-op. I've got about another month and a half to reach that point.... I'll let you know.

A feeling similar to morning sickness?

About feelings of morning sickness. I know how you feel I thought it would get better but it hasn't. I'm almost two years since my surgery. I've lost a total of 180 lbs. now I'm trying to gain back 20lbs. Food looks gross and smells worse. So I eat ice cream, drink whole milk, protein shake and some food. Believe it or not I eat an eggo with butter and peanut butter every morning and ramien noodles with chicken broth and cheddar cheese every night. Last night I had beef stew it was delicious but 2 hrs later my stomach soured and I took chewable tums, some Zofran and an hour later I vomited. I too feel like this daily but mine is actually in the morning. I'm seeing a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and they found its not from the surgery I've had this for years. So now I take gabapentin to help me swallow and tolerate food. I haven't tried a steak or cheeseburger yet. I drool over them. But I am going to try one. I wish you luck. I try food now I just have to get it to stay down.

Reasons why I LOVE where I work

Today although it's not like it wasn't apparent before ... i truly realized how blessed i am to work where i do. For the 1st week post surgery my manager supported 100% my working a reduced schedule at home with no impact to pay.. Being back in the office was less of a hindrance than i thought along with being chased home around 2pm everyday with the words go home and rest and heal..My work environment is amazing.. my desk is height adjustable so that i can go from sitting to standing at my desk easily so that i can take the pressure of the port incision so that it won't hurt as much. to they gym facilities where i can walk on the thread mil for as long as i want while i take a meeting on the phone. To the cafe with their long list of healthy/organic food options. to the AMAZING laptop bag our admin just ordered so that i don't have to carry my laptop around - given that it's pretty darn heavy.. I AM BLESSED..

    Fashion Challenged Please Help!

Hi AnneK2014, I think one of the joys women have is shopping. I'm not in to wearing heals or dresses that's just not me. I'm not a tomboy just not in to that...just me. I think as you get more comfortable in your own "skin" you'll find what works for you. It sounds like your allowed to dress fairly casual for work. Old navy is good as mentioned but also American Eagle, Gap, H&M and nordstrom rack if you catch a good sale. This can give you more options. They are online or maybe in your area but some only offer certain items online. If you go to the online stores you can see the trends, hi-lo tops, lace shirts, pastel colors, etc. But, it's more about what you like. Treat yourself to what you think looks good in my opinion. I find high waisted jeans fit me better than low rise jeans as I lose weight. I also buy a couple 3/4 sleeve tees in different colors and button down shirts. For shoes boat shoes like Sperry's are comfy and they last. Congrats on your journey, hope this helps.

    Protein Intake Suggestion

Your very welcome. I have been speaking with quite a few people who have been having difficulty with their protein Intake bc they're so fresh from surgery that I thought if this has helped me drastically finally get in all my protein I need to share it so it may be helpful for others to do the same. I actually look forward to drinking it!!! What a difference from four days ago lol.
  19. Hi All, I had my gastric bypass 4 weeks ago. I'm doing pretty well, though as we all know, it is an adjustment. I'm working hard to get in my liquids and Protein, and the nutritionist is happy with my progress. I'm trying to walk every day. My problem is that some days I am just absolutely exhausted. I'm not sure exactly why. It could be not enough protein, or pushing too hard the day before. Has anyone else had this? And how do you cope with it? Anne
  20. So when did you guys start following the 30/30 rule? I find it impossible to meet my protein goal and follow it. Is it more important for later phases??
  21. I am 4 months post op and still drinking at least 1 if not 2 shakes per day. Lots of people a year out drink at least 1 shake a day, so do not feel bad about still doing that. It takes a LONG time to get to where you need to be with Protein from food and very few get there during pureeds (I certainly didn't).
  22. @@gpmed - I did find the 30/30 rule very overwhelming in the beginning but it does get easier. I did not follow it with shakes (per my NUT) though she did tell me to not mix the two. in other words, just drink your shake and then when you are done, have other liquids. Eventually I settled on not necessarily waiting 30 minutes after drinking before I ate. I always wait at least 15 minutes and sometime it is 30, but that one rule particularly overwhelmed me. (I am not saying do what I do, but that did help me relax.) I set a timer for 30 minutes on my phone after I finish eating and don't drink until the timer goes off, so I do stick with that rule. I probably only eat 3 to 4 times per day and have 1 shake per day. It is what works for me and I am able to get my Protein to at least 80 grams that way. I use Premier Protein ready to drink shakes or Precision Engineered powder both of which have 30 grams of protein so that helps a lot. (By the way, if you haven't read this yet - your body only absorbs 25g to 30g per hour so it won't do any good to add a bunch of protein or drink one of those protein shots.) If you can add unflavored Protein Powder to any of your food, that helps too (though I don't do that much anymore). If you like milk, you can also drink some skim milk in between meals which will get you fluids and protein at the same time. (Try Fairlife milk if you haven't. It is very good with more protein and less carbs.) I can promise your NUT nor surgeon expect you to get to your protein goals every day at this point. It will come in time. Just keep focusing on it. Hope that helps a little. I have only recently sort of settled in to not being so overwhelmed with the rules so don't feel bad.
  23. Day 2 of this I went to the gas station and bought me a 33.8 ounce bottle of water at 6am. By 6.40 it's half gone. I love the timing thing!! I am up .6 pounds from yesterday, I got in 64 grams of protein and 80 ounces of water. I am going to push for 100 ounces of water today!! And I am going to put some fit TV on and get out my weights
  24. It's a good idea to plan out your food for the day. Try to take things that will be easy to eat on-the-go, at least for the first couple days. Make sure you take your Water everywhere you go (if you can). I really had a hard time getting in my water at work, and I'm still not doing as well on work days as I do when I'm home. I think what's important is to have a plan going into the work day, so you don't feel stressed out about eating, and having the right foods. I do much better when I plan the night before, get everything made and portioned out into my tiny little bowls, etc. It keeps me from worrying and stressing out early in the morning. Do you like string cheese? It's something I've been eating at work for a snack, and it has pretty good Protein. I also have some hard-boiled eggs on hand to take for a snack as well. I am really pretty boring, and I eat a lot of tuna salad, chicken breast, lunchmeat, cottage cheese, Greek or Carbmaster yogurt, and cheeses. I don't get a lot of variety, but I make sure to get my protein in. Then I usually have different meals at home, with a little more variety (sometimes. I still eat lots of tuna, even at home).
  25. You might have to be crafty to find the Protein sources that will work for you. I noticed amazon does feature lactose-free products, and I'm sure your local Vitamin Shoppe or GNC or Bariatric pantry have products that will do the job. http://www.amazon.com/Plant-Fusion-Supplement-Chocolate-Pound/dp/B0021FAITU/ref=sr_1_3?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1367872766&sr=1-3&keywords=lactose+free+protein+powder I was looking at plant fusion and it has good reviews. I used to make Protein shakes with lactaid to eliminate some of the lactose, but I am not really intolerant, but our nutritionist said that many people for some reason become lactose intolerant after surgery. Other than that, if you can tolerate soft food, perhaps look into Quinoa as a protein source. Do some research, it looks pretty good, and of course there is soy. Sorry to hear you are having trouble eating. Keep working at it, little by little you will hopefully make progress. As tough as it is, this period is where you will lose most of your weight and as it gets easier to eat, the loss will slow down, so it actually works in your favor. Look at this as a positive if you can. Good luck on your journey!!
