Affordable personal training
CanyDome replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Many people want to get in shape and build muscle, but the cost of a personal trainer can be a real bummer. Online private trainer courses can be a great option if you're on a tight budget. However, I'm sure you won't be able to get in perfect physical shape on your own. I work as a trainer, and I can tell you that it is a demanding job. To have some knowledge about workout design and injury prevention, I took special courses at creatept.com. So do not be afraid to buy a subscription to the gym to a good trainer because your health depends on it. I wish you good luck on your fitness journey! -
You can always drink milk and milkshakes in place of protein shakes. Cheese, deli meat and yogurts are easily sourced too.
-
protein bars are good to take. I used to sometimes take beef jerky and cheese sticks with me, too (they can be out of refrigeration for quite awhile - as in hours if not a day or so). Once you're there, you may be able to find a grocery or convenience store that has things like yogurt, cheese sticks, etc.

Hi everyone, I am going on my first trip since having my surgery at the end of November. At this point my meal plan includes most foods, but I’m anticipating having some challenges with meeting my goals and tracking. I’m planning to bring some protein bars to have with me as I don’t think much time will be spent at the hotel - I’ll be sight seeing most of the day. I’m flying so can’t bring any protein shakes with me and won’t have a kitchen to do any cooking. Does anyone have any travel tips?

Concerned about meds
Arabesque replied to Notingreenbay's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
Have to admit I’m very surprised by your PCP’s attitude about this. If your post surgical plan says not to swallow meds or take slow release meds for a period of time, you would expect your PCP to be supportive. The main reason slow release meds are avoided is because of possible absorption issues (more common with bypass but can happen with sleeve). Many, many people successful change their meds to non timed release. It is possible. What will your doctor do when you need to reduce your BP dosage as you lose weight?? I’d ask my pharmacist too about alternatives so you’re more informed about options when you go back to your PCP. As @The Greater Fool said it’s highly likely your meds were first formulated as non time released. -
I know all plans are different but I didn’t need to have another disgusting shake after the first two weeks. Like the others, I got my protein in from ‘real’ food. I didn’t hit my protein goal everyday but the days I didn’t I’d be close. I agree with the suggestion to find a high protein yoghurt. Eat it as yoghurt or make it into a yoghurt drink by blending with milk (count the added milk as fluid). I got 15g protein from the yoghurt & 25g for the yoghurt drink. Made rolled oats on milk & made it pretty thin. Same with scrambled eggs. Only small amounts of additional protein from the milk but it all adds up.I often just ate meat as my lunch meal too - no vegetables. If you eat only 3ozs of most meats you should get about 20g protein which was 1/3 of my daily goal - your goal may be more. I agree, get the burning checked out. Most hunger pangs are just stomach acid not real hunger. You may need a stronger PPI for your stomach acid. And yes, get some high protein meal ideas from your dietician. Water can seem almost heavy to drink @Possum220 for a while. Don’t know why but it does get easier. Try drinking it at room temperature if you drink it cool/cold. Add a little squeeze/splash of fruit juice (any citrus, squashed berries, etc.) to your water & see if that helps ‘lighten’ the water.

1 week in the Caribbean...
Annettecoto replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I live in PR and I’m getting my surgery next week. Where did you stay??? Cause I’ve found everything I need and more. Yes culturally we do use rice and bread a lot but there is plenty of options. If somebody is coming over just ask, we can point you where to find everything, defined in a touristy are it will be more difficult. -
began preop diet on 2/6/27
Merri Beth replied to Turch's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
My pre-op was protein shakes, broth, and sugar free popsicles. I prayed my way through it. I know if I tried to do it on my own it would not have worked. I did it and had surgery Nov. 29, 2022. My last weigh in at Dr in January I was down 32 lbs. I am not getting on the scale until I go back to Dr. in March. -
Am I the only miserable one?

I'm so grateful for your post also. I've been craving seafood like crazy, however I'm still having a hard time with vegetables. I changed from liking half and half to wanting fairlife high protein lactose free skim milk. Before surgery I could eat grapenuts cereal in half and half now that makes me nauseous just from the thought of it. Half and half smells like butter to me, it's really hard to explain. I'm petrified of eating anything fried because of how sick it makes me, before surgery I ate fried chicken strips almost daily telling myself that it was healthy..... While I still miss my relationship with pizza and fried chicken strips, I'm learning to enjoy my new relationship with food. I'm grateful for this forum because I can reach out to others who are going through the same thing that I am and I can talk through it or research it and realize that I'm not alone. That sometimes this to shall pass or this is my new normal. -
Hi everyone !!! I recently decided to try the gastric sleeve option which my doctor supported. I am currently 223 pounds 5’2 so my bmi qualifies. Family history of diabetes and hypertension and heart disease cholesterol you name it they got it. The question I have is about the necessary documentation as far as documentation of weight loss within the previous 12 months. I had been going to Urban Skin solutions weight loss mes spa. Trying lipo injections and phertamine to no avail I have the documents which show my bmi and weight for every visit. Would this be enough ?

I'm still pre-op and don't have a surgery date yet. So my problem is, I am hungry ALL. THE. TIME. I eat ALL. THE. TIME. Is this an unconscious pre-surgery last hoorah? If so, that's not my intention. I don't have an eating disorder. I haven't started a new medication. Maybe hormones, but I don't have a period, so not sure there. My husband is away on business, but this isn't a new thing for us. Has anyone experienced this? My dietitian tells me to focus on protein and fiber. Trying, but not helping. I'm in therapy and have dealt with about 90% of my issues. I've never been one to emotionally eat. I do take antidepressants, but I haven't had issues with eating with the new cocktail of meds I'm on. This is a new issue for me and I don't understand what's going on. Thanks for your insights and help.

Your frustration is palpable and I’m sorry you feeling disappointed and that you weren’t given this information before surgery. Even if you feel like your weight loss has somehow been capped you when you reach a stall you stall you might consider switching it up with a focus on weight training. What our surgeries don’t take away is our ability to sculpt our bodies by adding lean muscle. That’s still within your power. I’ve really enjoyed weight training in the past - it’s given me so much confidence to see myself grow stronger and the Protein focused diet can be similar to what is encouraged of us post surgery. I hope it’s an option you consider to move past this roadblock.

Food Before and After Photos
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I tend to eat them both ways. I have my savory and sweet ones. -
I found protein shakes were harder to keep down after my operation. I think the bubbles in the shakes had too much volume to them. I dont know why but cordial is easier to get down than plain water. Definitely check back in with your dietician/nutritionist. Ask your surgeon about the burning sensation. Just do the best that you can with your fluids.

I struggled to eat in the early months post-op and couldn't stomach the godawful protein shakes (and still can't 🤢). I got my protein in through protein-fortified soy milk (matcha lattes!), protein water (a godsend because it also counts towards your water intake and I still rely on it today to get my daily protein up), and whatever solid protein food I could manage to eat. I was barely eating 1/4-1/2 a cup of food 3 times a day for the longest time, so the protein water and soy milk really helped. If you eat dairy, try some protein fortified yoghurt. Ultimately though, ask your dietician/nutritionist, as they're the experts and will be able to guide you. Talk to your surgeon about the burning feeling and get on top of that! I develop ulcers fairly easily, and they're no fun, so something may be going on there.

Hey I'm 7 weeks post-op still not able to get in protein and water can only eat about 3 oz Don't have any desire to eat at all... My stomach has a burning sensation frequently thought it was acid reflux but I have meds for that I'm starting to think maybe it's a hunger burn. I really need a meal plan cannot stomach protein shakes anymore, any advice would be helpful Sent from my SM-G996U using BariatricPal mobile app

What does your pre-op diet? There are so many variations from dr to dr. Mine was 2 weeks of 2 protein shakes and one small meal of protein and veggies a day. I was sleeved on 9-1-22 and have lost 45 pounds, 20 to 30 more to go. Great experience. Just follow your plans and drinks lots of water. Congratulations on this new beginning!

The chest pains are most definitely gas. Do you feel them in your back as well? Especially in your left shoulder blade (apparently there is some nerve that's connected from your stomach to your shoulder blade - the things we discover)... For me, the gas pain lasted 2+ weeks. To be honest, I was miserable after surgery and had many regrets, especially in the 1st week. You lost a lot during the pre-op phase! That is amazing - Congrats! Follow your plan, don't eat pureed and solid foods before it is time, and most definitely focus on your protein since it helps with your energy levels. Also, don't be like me and think that you can clean your whole house a week post op and not feel any pain. Don't lift more than recommended, and take it easy. This whole new you has just begun, and you are on an amazing journey. Enjoy the results!

I had a VSG on 01/06/23. I loss 38 lbs since the pre-op liquid phase. I consume 800-1000 calories a day and aim for 80+ grams of protein a day. I feel good. I haven't had any issues with any foods. Well except that I cannot tolerate protein shakes at all so I rely on protein rich foods. I can also tolerate unflavored Genepro in my Crystal Light and some protein bars.

Am I the only miserable one?
smc124 replied to amylittlelbs's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m struggling right now too. I’m not regretting but wishing there was a fast forward. Like you I take adderall for adhd and had similar eating pattern before starting this process with not eating much during the day but then a huge meal in evening -often a take away when the adderall wears off. I’m having a bit of the opposite problem. I’m finding food really unappealing right now. Just looking at a piece of meat (especially grilled chicken and Turkey meatballs)or smelling it is enough to turn me off. I’m struggling to tolerate vegetables, I’m still experiencing nausea semi regularly. Worse than all of those things I have really low energy. I may be 60lbs lighter than I was 6 months ago when I had my first consultation with my surgeon but I the tiredness I feel 10 weeks out from surgery is as if I was still dragging that weight around. I try to be very active and truly enjoy excercise esp swimming and weightlifting which I do in the mornings but by 4pm the exhaustion strikes and by 6p it’s like the thought of getting out of bed let alone preparing dinner feels like a gargantuan task. I’m exceeding my Protein and hydration targets and feel like I’m following all the rules, the weight loss feels controlled and stable, but I now seem to dread eating and am dreaming of the days I’ll see my pre surgery energy level. So even know I remain positive about the outlook overall in future, real time feelings in the present moment are like you somewhat miserable. And you know what, I think it’s okay to feel that way and not pretend everything is great. The reality is change comes from struggle and rewriting a lifetime of psychologically treating food as a comfort or enemy, or indulgence rather than what it truly is - the fuel for our bodies - at least for me probably requires this misery to reset. Wishing you some comfort to cravings. One food joy I was able to find was creating a Greek yogurt topping bar, having previously never liked Greek yogurt this now is a bright spot in my food day. I hope can find at least one comfort like me. Early on I did also have mental craving for egg rolls and other normal foods so I think what you experiencing is probably normal - since you mentioned Chinese I’m linking to a recipe that satisfied that craving for me. You should be able to have it as soon as you are allowed veg. https://stylishcravings.com/low-carb-easy-make-egg-roll-bowl/ Again hoping you find comfort soon and if you ever need to vent feel free to message me. -
Advanced Recovery shakes
qtdoll replied to Kris Poole's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Very odd that you HAVE to drink these. Did they sell them to you? I just saw that they're almost 300cals per bottle. That's way too high for a protein drink in my opinion. The protein drinks I have are 170cals & taste amazing (Fairlife brand) I'd sugest asking them to switch to something else especially since it tastes horrible. That's really frustrating
