Of course it depends entirely on what you're used to eating - what your energy needs are. If you're 500lb and live on 6000 calories a day you can lose weight darn fast still eating what I'd call a lot of food. But for me personally to shift 20lb in a month - a Protein shake diet is the only way I can think of to do that - 1000 calories a day or less, lots of cardio and just put up with being starving hungry. Now, I'm at a low weight, so no doubt you fit somewhere in the middle there. Its certainly doable, not pleasant, but doable. However, there's no magic in Protein shakes. If you can stick to 1000 calories or less a day on real food you'll lose weight just the same. But presurgery, high protein low carb is important - it shrinks your liver and much as I dont believe in low carb diets, its the best way to lose a lot of weight fast.

OK, my surgery date is August 18th. Last time I was at the gym I weighed myself and turned out being 312. I think when I went in for my first weigh in I was about 309. They told me I need to lose about 15 pounds. So I have a month to make about 20 pounds fall off. I have been eating Breakfast. Small portions though, and high in Protein. For lunch I usually grab a lean cuisine or something light. At dinner I eat a well balanced meal. Does anyone have any tips for me for dropping the 20 pounds. That sounds like so much to me. I dont know if I can do it in that amount of time unless I go on some liquid diet for the whole month. Ew! Thanks in advance! -Mana

screeden replied to BaileyRose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know for me, some days I am hungrier than others and can feel I am tight. especially during my monthly cycle. on those days I usually have more protein shakes cause I know I won't eat much solid food. -
Thank you all for the replies! I will try the protein shake thing. I still haven't added that to my diet yet. Here is hoping this works. I am kind of excited to see what I weigh in at when I go to the gym. I try to weigh myself only once a week. Praying for the best!

You could try a protein shake for breakfast and dinner and a low cal/fat/carb protein based lunch.

question on protein shakes
Jodi_620 replied to Ellen86's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am required to do the liquid Protein I can have the EAS shakes or Adkins. Other things that I can have are. Protein powder mixed with water or hood milk (they recommend unjury or any brand containing whey protein) chicken or Beef broth (1 cup) sugar free Jello (1/2 cup) Crystal Light Carb control yogurt smoothies (no more than on per day) They also recommended Citrocel because the Fiber makes you feel full but I just don't like that stuff... Have something every 2-3 hours as needed to control hunger. -
Dr. Aceves has his patients on 10 days of clear, then 10 days of full liquids. That should be where you are now. You can have Soup that you put in a blender to get rid of all the chunks.I blended tomato soup and cottage cheese to get more Protein. You can also have the egg flower soup from the chinese places, and of course any kind of Protein Drink you can stand. There are also drinkable yogurts. Hope that helps!

Why do I do this to myself! UGH!
BLERDgirl replied to kranky813's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Been there done that. As my allergies got worse I realized I needed food options. I keep emergency food in my glove compartment. They are enough to keep me from starving until I can eat properly Protein bars Single servings of nuts Single servings of protein powders that can be mixed with Water or milk of choice. Prepacked oatmeal that can be mixed with water. Single serving nut butters Other options: Jerky or dried meat Single serving tuna packs I also always keep water bottles with me at ALL times. -

Thanks..I also need to walk more I think...No protein as yet...only clear soups allowed...Ok I will stop weighing daily now....obsession with weight is not good. -
What stage are you in? You will have may more options once you get back to regular cooked food. For me that was 4 1/2 weeks. Before that, I used baby foods for purees. For soft foods, I just took what I wanted and put it in the blender with enough broth or Water to make it the right consistency. If you are already in the regular stage and lost about menus, go to: theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com She is one of us and understands what we are going through. 2Nd Week And Already In A Stall...wtf!
Shells_Almost_There replied to ucjes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's completely normal and expected...and could last for many weeks. Stick to your plan: Protein and Water. Track them and do your best to make your daily goal. Try to not obsess over the weight on the scale, because even in the stall most people lose inches like crazy. -

Major reflux after Sleeve and herna repair
BLERDgirl replied to Shannon Piper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you are self pay it does make sense to get the testing done and present that to the bariatric surgeon. They can then advise if sleeve or bypass is a better option. I hope something works out for you. -

Where or how is a good way to keep track of how much protein I'm getting in? It was easy when it was just shakes, it says it on the package but now that I'm starting to add in smooshy foods I wonder if anyone has suggestions.

Matrix Mint Cookie by syntrax
worm2872 replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love this stuff!!!!! I also live the samples at baratirc pantry. I found and use it the Syntrax nectar chocolate Truffle from there as well. For the mint cookie I add 4 OZ of milk and 4 OZ of Water. All milk is a little heavy for me. This is 27 grams of Protein. -
My 14 day pre-op diet is required by my doctor, and consists of 4 Protein shakes or bars each day and one Lien Cuisine meal. They must all total no more than 1200 calories. The Protein shakes must have more than 10% protein versus calories (I use Ensure High Protein Milk chocolate - very, very yummy. They have 210 calories and 25 grams of protein. So, the calorie/protein ratio is good with the requirement). I've lost 8.5 pounds so far in my pre-op and I'm in day 10. Have 4 more days till surgery. Good luck!

Hair Loss - Gastric Sleeve?
Babbs replied to Kym Preslar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, depends on your definition of "a lot". Most people don't go bald, if that's what your asking. I think it all depends on how thick your hair is whether it's noticeable or not. I had very thick hair, and I would say I lost about 25-30% of it. My hairdresser basically stated I knew what "normal" hair felt like now, lol. I started losing at around month 4 or 5, and it slowed at month 8 and just recently stopped at a year out. I think it happens to most people at around 3-5 months. I don't believe there is a whole lot you can do to prevent it. Some people take Biotin, and making sure you're getting all your Protein and Vitamins will help, I don't think it will prevent it completely. It's just kind of a normal part of the process, between the shock of the surgery and the small amount of calories and nutrition you consume, it's going to happen to most. Not all, but most.
