    Pre-Op Diet Question

I was allowed three 8 oz protein shakes a day, plus one of each of the following: sugar free jello, 6 oz low-fat and no sugar added yogurt OR 4 oz fat free cottage cheese, 3 ounces of fruit or sugar free applesauce. The nutritionist told me I could have one extra protein shake if I was really hungry. Plus all the water, crystal lite or other non-sweetened, non-caffinated beverages I wanted. It was pretty strict, but I lost 15 pounds over the two weeks!
  2. Ditto on the liquids stage....I had several slugs of drinkable yogurt and a chocolate protein drink (instead of traditional eggs Benedict) for breakfast, butternut squash bisque (instead of prime rib and fixings) for dinner, strained French onion soup as a snack, and vanilla PB2 shake (instead of Danish Kringler) for desert.
  3. hang in there. I was sleeved on Oct. 20 2011 and have lost 100lbs. I was wearing size 20 and stretching those and weighed 260. Now I wear size 8-10 and weigh 160. First time in our marriage that I have weighed less than my husband. I love the way I look in the mirror now but still feel like I am the same size until someone stops me at work and comments on how great I look. Physically I feel GREAT. Nothing hurts anymore. Little things like being able to cross my legs now when I sit down feels good. I feel sick when I look back at pictures of me in the past and see how fat I looked. I just didn't realize how I looked and how it affected how I lived and worked. I feel so much younger now. I'm 53 but was feeling much older when I was heavy. What I found easiest to use is Total Lean Meal Replacement shakes from GNC. They come in bottles ready to drink so no mixing. Tastes like chocolate milk to me. I also like their unflavored Protein powder that I add to yogurt for a snack and to my luxury item (mocha frappe's from McDonalds). I also eat the weight watcher (Smart Ones) frozen meals for lunch and then some kind of meat for dinner. I take my multi Vitamin, vit. D, B complex, vit. B12 daily. I try to drink 1-2 of the shakes per day and I also fill in when hungry with South Beach Meal Bars or Snacks. You will eventually get to the point where you can have a bite or two of what you used to love along with the above and be satisfied. Be strong and have patience. It will get better and before long you will be where you want to be.

What are you eating post op?

For the first week post, i was eating clear liquids; drinking rather. I was allowed to progress to semisolid foods beginning the 2nd week post op. At that time my eating consisted of refrained beans, low fat string cheese, yogurt, egg whites, sugar free pudding, 1% cottage cheese and various protein fortified desserts. I have been cleared to progress past semisolid foods at my discretion and will try fish today for dinner. Mahi mahi is one of my favorites!

What are you eating post op?

I am 5.5 weeks post op (every day matters!). I am back to work and can eat a little bit of anything although raw veggies like baby carrots is not good. I am still relying on a protein drink of some sort to get in easy protein but yogurt, eggs, and chicken are my mains. For breakfast I had 1 egg and half a piece of toast. Lunch and snack will be yogurt. I have had no slime incidents, but, came close with the carrots!!
  6. No, nothing makes me dump. If I eat a lot of sweets (like a whole piece of cheesecake or several cookies) I might get a bit of a tummy ache. I never had any suggested drinks....just daily Fluid and protein goals. It was up to me how I met them. Had no calorie or carb goals, either As for popscicles, Syntrax Naturals (sweetened with stevia and erythritol) comes in Orange, peach, vanilla and chocolate and made good pops. Mixing orange juice with the vanilla makes a good dreamsicle. Diluted fruit juice (100% juice, no sugar added) makes good pops, too. I couldn't tolerate artificial sweeteners or lactose for 4 months so I had to get creative on what I drank. I was flavoring my protein smoothies and plain Greek yogurt with pureed fruit from the beginning. The carbs actually helped with my energy level. And considering I passed goal at 7 months and have maintained over two years out I'd say real sweeteners have not hindered my progress. Moderation is key.
  7. Thanks for posting canadianprairiega! I haven't tried oatmeal or salad yet. My diet thus far is still pretty bland. I have egg whites and sausage for breakfast, cheese stick for snack, chili for lunch, Greek yogurt for snack, and some sort of Protein for dinner. It feels like I'm losing slowly and suddenly I have a major sense of urgency to see the scale move. I had my one month post op last week. The doc gave me a goal of 154 within the next five months. Honestly I sat there and giggled in disbelief when he set that goal. He assured me that I could do it, but I can't even picture myself at that weight. It seems so unreal. So, now I'm using MFP and exercising. Hopefully the scale will move. My current stats- presurgery 235, surgery weight 212, current weight 191.

    Post-op diet at work

If you're going onto soft foods you could bring some cottage cheese or some greek yogurt
  9. I too have a 40f. I didn't suffer with nausea post-op and was getting in 20 oz of fluids on day 2. By day 5 I was up to 64 oz of water and herbal tea. I can drink 16 oz of warm tea in just a few minutes. Everything goes down easily. I get full quickly on dense foods like yogurt. Tomorrow is my two week mark and I'm down 13 pounds. I love my 40f!

    slipped band picture

Can fills and unfills cause band slippage? I'm concerned that I may have slippage and can't get to my surgeon for a few days yet. My symptoms are not as severe as most I've read, though. I'd be interested in hearing more about symptoms, corrections and recovery times. The history (if you're interested): I was filled to 2cc's for 4 months with only a little restriction and went to a local NP for a fill. He's assistant to a local bariatric surgeon and sounded like he knew what he was doing. He gave me a 1cc fill. It was WAY too tight, so we unfilled the next day to 2.5cc. I could eat that evening, but the next AM I could hardly get Water down. I thought maybe it was swelling and waited a few days. Dehydration sent me back, and the NP completely unfilled me and prescribed Prednesone for the swelling. A week later we put back 2.1cc's. Again, I could eat thick liquids that day and drink anything. The next AM, same story. Again, waited a couple of days for swelling to go down, but no go. Back again for an unfill down to 1.75cc's. Kept to liquids for almost 3 days, then tried thick liquids (cream Soup, yogurt) and vomiting occurred (though not retching). Now, in the morning I have trouble getting even liquids down sometimes. Other times I can eat yogurt. At times (though rarely, and usually in the evening) I can eat softer foods and even crackers, but most of the time I can't eat anything.... That's where I'm at. I can't get to my surgeon until next week.

    Did Not Succeed

There have been some good suggestions about talking to your doctor to see if your band has been placed and is working correctly. You didn't say what kind of sick you got but I assume it was band related - thus the 2cc unfill. If your band is okay and you can't for whatever reason get a fill at this time, and you seem like you can eat most foods - then I recommend that you just count calories. Stay under 1500. At your weight you should be able to lose at that calorie level. And eat healthy foods that fill you up. High Fiber, salads with lots of veggies. Wraps with lite deli chicken or ham. Baked potatoes with I can't believe it's not butter spray. High fiber cereals. And lite oatmeal. Lite Soups (progresso makes good ones). Whole grain crackers. Protein bars (special K makes a great choc. Peanut Butter Meal Replacement bar). Don't drink any calories. Just crystal lite. And Water. Use skim milk. Get lite whole wheat bread for toast. For fruit, use no sugar added cups of fruit (they come in 1/2 cup sizes). For Snacks try sugar free pudding, Jello, or the fruit. I mix the jello and sugar free peaches. Use a little fat free whipped topping. I hate cheese and yogurt but you could try that, too. Try this for about 3 weeks and see how it goes. Exercise daily, too. Do something you like. Take a walk. Join a gym. Lift weights. Take a dancing class. Whatever you like. Good luck

    Food glorious food!!

Isn't great to enjoy real food flavors again. i was also lucky to get a reprieve from the shakes and start mushies 2 days early. What a gift! Its almost 3 months since I started mushies, and I haven't had a shake since. You may want to try some Grrek yogurt on your backed potato. To me, it tastes like sour cream. Fage has a 0% G. yogurt that has 10g of Protein in 1/2 cup. Good luck on your journey. Joan

    What are slider foods?

Popcorn is my biggest slider (I can eat a whole bucket if I get one). Also chips/dip, crackers, and Cookies. Ice cream, however, is not for me. I can only eat about 4-6 bites and be good. I think a slider is personal for everyone. Basically it's whatever goes thru easily without filling u up. I think even healthy foods can be sliders (like yogurt)
  14. I'm 11 days post op and I'm mostly liquid. When does your nutritionist let you move on to something soft? I'm up to two teaspoons of plain yogurt. I'm taking an antibiotic because I've had a fever so to avoid a yeast infection I'm doing yogurt for me 3 "meals" this week. Have you eaten Jello? That gave me the sensation of eating while being on the liquid portion of my plan. I also like Popsicles because it's almost like a bite.

    Just 8 days post RNY

Lisa, your just starting so don't be frustrated. Your most likely still retaining some of that Fluid from the hospital as well as still swollen. I didn't step on the scale for almost 2 weeks after surgery. liquids will go away. I'm 5 1/2 weeks out and eating things that I can chew. I'm down 33lbs and loving this whole thing. food no longer controls my life, I don't worry about what I'm eating and when can I eat it. Once you can start pureed you'll start to feel better about everything. Even being able to eat something like yogurt gives you hope, do don't be depressed or sad. Time goes by quickly and before you know it you'll be eating yummy stuff again. I actually went out to dinner for the first time tonight, granted I only had a cup of awesome chili with cheese and onions, but more importantly I felt like I was a part of the human race again.
  16. The Protein is to help with healing your "new stomach" was the way it was explained to me. Plus your stomach is swollen because of the surgery, and liquids are easier then the solid food to digest, plus not get stuck on the way in or out. My steps were as follows for being "sleeved': Needing to drink Water & protein after surgery, 1 oz every 15 minutes while you're awake. After going home, for the next week, Clear Liquids, Protein drinks (the amount of protein per day depends on your weight at the date of surgery). Then for weeks 2 & 3, I was able to add puree'd Soups to the list. As long as they were lump & chunk free. for this I have a stick blender (it blended canned Soup up great). I can also have yogurt. Then on week 4 I will be able to add in mushy meats, like tuna fish and canned chicken, mixed with low fat mayo, I just need to make sure everything is moist, and chewed VERY well into small pieces. After that, I can start to add other things back n, being very careful, as it might go down one day, and it's a "no go" on a different day. I have found that I had to slow way down on putting food in my mouth, and chew, chew, chew. Or else it will feel like it is stuck in your throat, or it comes back up. I will say, that in checking different web-sites, there are different time lines on how long you stay on what. check with your surgeon, they have their plans set up for a reason. But you can always ask questions. Good luck, and see you on the other side :0)

    Help....please

I second the food tracking. I've read that tracking your food is one of the best ways to stay on course because you can clearly see if you start getting off course. Although it sounds like you don't really have a course, which sucks. I am not a doctor or medical professional in any way, but I can tell you what my plan is and maybe you can adjust it to suit your needs. I'm 3 months post-op, have lost 62 pounds, and am eating between 800 and 1,000 calories a day. I aim for 80 to 100 grams of Protein and no more than 40 to 60 grams of carbs. I try to avoid sugar and simple carbs like white rice, white bread, potatoes, etc. I don't really track fat, but I do stick with low fat in things like cheese because the low fat seems to have more protein. I typically have a premier Protein shake for Breakfast around 7, a snack like a boiled egg or 1/2 cup of cottage cheese around 10, lunch like chicken salad or lunch meat and cheese around 1, a light greek yogurt around 4, dinner like baked fish and steamed veggies around 7, then a small snack before bed that I usually choose based on whether I need more calories or protein or what by that point in the day. I do not drink carbonated beverages or alcohol, and I try to avoid what I call empty eating, like sugar free pudding, which may not be bad for you but also don't really offer you anything. After meeting with a personal trainer to plan a workout routine, here's what I do. 3 to 4 days a week, I spend 30 minutes on the treadmill or bike and 30 minutes doing the gym's circuit training. Then 2 or 3 days a week, I do some relatively light weight training. I hope this helps. If you want, feel free to private message me and I'll do my best to give you whatever answers I may have.
  19. Yogurt, egg whites (some people have trouble with eggs), mashed potato (no gravy), mashed cauliflower, squash, chili (Wendy's), bbq chicken (KFC, no bun). I would bring ready to drink protein shakes so that you have SOMETHING in the event you are desperate (premier brand from Costco is very good, Muscle Milk Light). Bring some plastic spoons as you can usually find greek yogurt anywhere (including 7/11 or Cumberland Farms) but they may not have spoons.
  20. I bought the Healthy Choice Greek Frozen Yogurt (strawberry ) last night! Sooooo yummy!!! They come in a pack of 3...... very good! xo Hilary

    Anyone having surgery in March?

Just got scheduled today for March 4th. I have slowly been incorporating foods into my diet that I'll be able to have before and after. I've been eating more yogurt and trying different broths. I'm going Protein shopping this weekend. I'll start my liquid diet in three weeks. I gave up using straws for the most part a few months ago and I'm working on not having any carbonated drinks. I need to cut back on caffeine but that's going to be really really hard. And the most exciting thing I've done so far is clothes shopping. I'm a 22/24 right now and I bought some smaller jeans. I just kind of look at them in the mornings and think how I can't wait till even those are too big for me.
  22. Nothing special really, there's nothing I don't eat, but I mainly stay high Protein low carb. For example tonight's dinner is rotisserie chicken (no skin) and a green salad with tomatoes, cucumber, and onions (and ranch dressing) For lunch today I had a homemade Soup made with with chicken and veggies, I had a banana for a snack and yogurt and coffee for Breakfast. I eat between 800-1000 calories a day now, but I was under 700 until 2 months ago. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Chicken Gyros?

I would ask if they make the sauce (if not ask if they will tell you the calories listed on the container). If they do make it ask whether it's made with low fat yogurt. Full fat Greek Yogurt has has much fat calories as ice cream. Trader Joe's was giving samples of their full fat French vanilla Greek yogurt. I said to myself this tastes like melted ice cream. Well when I read the container it had the same calories! Also often the meat in the Gyros are a mixture of ground up meats. May not really be that healthy. Most Greek places will have chicken Kabobs, I would probably say that would be a MUCH better option.
