Starting To Freak Out...would Love Some Reassurance
JenC replied to TaiDyed's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 11 days and 14lbs post op and feeling great! I can't believe how fast and what a breeze the surgery was! I did not do a revision so a litte different situation in that respect but any of the questions or anxiety I may have felt before is behind me and I'm so excited for my future! You came to the decision for many reasons and with a clear head I'm sure, before the anxiety of the "moments" before set in. You can do this! Get your desk cleared and your stuff done so you can focus on YOU during the time you've taken off for recovery. Luck to you!! :) -
Sleeve to bypass revisones
ECUJenn replied to MissLaLa05's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have time, post this in the post op board too because there are several people there that have had revisions. I'm not of them, but I know several in February did. Good luck! HW 344, DOS 320, Surgery Date 2/20/13, CW 291.1 Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk -
Anyone else having surgery really young?
kiwi201000 replied to MickeyMax95's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had lapband at 18, going in for revision to RNY tomorrow at age 26! I did great on lapband until a slip last year -
I was offered both options, and I went with bypass from the beginning. My reasons were because I have reflux and nausea on my own (the sleeve can make this worse), and there has been years and years of long term studies done on the bypass, but not the same for sleeve. Years ago, people thought lap band was the way to go, but we're now learning that it doesn't work all that well and there have been many complications, and lot of revisions. I'm not saying that the sleeve will turn out to be the same "fad" surgery, but the research just isn't there for it like the bypass is. Also, there have been studies that show the bypass is actually more effective at long term weight loss than the sleeve. I'm 5'2 230 pounds, so I qualify for both surgeries, but I'm not so big that I need more drastic measures, I just want to have only one surgery, done right the first time. I don't want to be sleeved and then have to do revision surgery later because it's not as effective as bypass. As far as the dumping goes, I actually WANT that as a tool to keep me, and my weight, in check. I feel like my weight is a big enough problem in my life to have surgery for it, so I'm going to go all-in, and get the bypass. My surgery is scheduled for December 29th. SO excited!!

My surgeon does lap-band because they have a longer track record with research and revisions. I'm sure they are both excellent. I've heard on this site that the Realize port is flatter in the tummy.

Change of plans..
sassyfrass23 replied to sassyfrass23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations on your surgery dates! Please keep me posted with your progress and how you are doing after surgery. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as your dates approach! And I cookarue- I am with you on the data. As pleasant as the sleeve sounds/sounded, a part of me feared what it would look like in 20 years. I never could find any success stories, or stories in general after 3 or 4 years post op. I know that weight regain is possible with any WLS, it my surgeon is very confident in the bypass and what it can offer me over the other surgeries. So I am very excited about that. And like you- I want a one-time deal. The thought of having one surgery, it not be a success and causing me to have a revision to the bypass is too much. My dear friend who had the sleeve earlier this year is mostly satisfied with it, but she wishes she would have just gone with the bypass. I don't want to have that regret. RC- I currently do not have a surgery date. I meet my surgeon again in December, which is when I'll have a better idea of when they will be submitting paperwork to UHC. Monday is my final weigh in for the 6 month supervised weight loss and after that I have to complete the second portion to my psych eval- so I shouldn't be far. Did your surgeon say anything about what they expect life to look like after surgery with your PCOS? I am so badly praying that I will see an improvement with some of my side effects from PCOS. It has gotten so far out of control that I can barely tolerate it anymore. ???? -
Insurance denial for slipped band revision
kld108 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I am looking for any advice to help with this dilema. I have had the lap band 2 1/2 years with great success. A few months ago I was violently ill with the flu and the band slipped. The company I work for changed insurance in Jan 2010 to Anthem BC BS California. The insurance co is denying my claim for revision surgery due to an exclusion placed by my company P&G. Ins is telling me that I have to request an exception from my company benefits manager. When I try to get that information I am giving a title & po box to mail all requests. This has been 2-3 months ago! I have no way to contact anyone directly and the insurance company keeps pushing it back on my company. P&G. If anyone out there has had a slipped band, you understand just how painfull and misreable it can make your life! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! -
I decided against a sleeve revision as the sleeve wasn't addressing the actual problem. After a few years of trial and error I worked it out and solved my life long problem. I will be shortly launching My Simple Steps to Health as I have managed to lose 65 kgs by myself eating loads of food and feeling happy, calm and it's changed my life. Should be launching in April and I am more than happy to help everyone who signs up from Bariatric Pal for a heavily discounted amount. Thanks and look forward to helping you. Emma

Hi all, Just wondering what bypass peeps are eating 5 weeks out. Not sure if there is a thread / topic already. I know we each follow our doctors / nut's plans / advice but just wondered what people are doing and looking to share dietary plans / advice. My WLS journey was Band, Band to Sleeve, then Sleeve to Bypass. (Yep 3 ops!). Pre band weight - 136kg Weight at last revision (Bypass) on the 10th May 2016 - 103kg Weight today - 94.9kg Goal weight - 80kg Here's what I'm having each day this week : 630am - I have a 250ml glass of Water and my Multivitamin liquid, Biotin liquid, sublingual B12. 0730am - (On the way to work) 2 x calci-chews with vit D and a coffee (250ml) with fat free added Calcium milk and a stevia for sweetener. 1000am - At work around 10am I'll have 1 scrambled egg with a low fat slice of cheese in it (can do it in the microwave). 12pm - I'll have a super greens type drink (500ml) with chia seeds and konjac root powder added to thicken it a little and maybe a little flavour free Protein powder. 2pm - Pre made portion of pureed chicken breast with veggies (200ml) Then just water / tea / coffee until I'm home. A couple of coloxyl and Senna laxative tablets if I need them. 6pm - Another pre made pureed chicken breast with veggies (200ml) 8pm - Half an Optifast lemon water desert (love them!) with sugar free jelly. (200ml) Then just tea and water until bed time. Might chuck a bit of benefibre in if I feel like it. Sometimes if I'm hungry anywhere in between the above I'll add up to 1 Protein shake / optifast Soup with konjac root powder to thicken a little. I find adding a small amount of the konjac root powder, just thickens liquidy type drinks ever so slightly increase my satiety. Also I'm 8 weeks of the cigarettes and no booze for ages :-( lol. I'm planning on a glass of wine or maybe 2 as a treat when I get to 90kg though :-) Does anyone else use Konjac root? Looking forward to your replies :-) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

7weeks out, feeling down, weight stopped
SleeveandRNYchica replied to patrickm613's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Is there anything on the can eat list you like? I am currently looking at a revision for similar issue and I know that from what I have been reading the losses can be a bit slower. Just remember the RNY is so different than sleeve. I am typing this as my heart is burning.. Hoping for relief soon. I can be emotional as well. Going through surgery twice sucks! -
Hi has anyone here had a revision from lap band to sleeve at UIC. Specifically with Dr. Hassan.

Revision Surgery Tommorrow
Threetimesacharm replied to Soli3l's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Best wishes to you. I had my band for 5 years had my revision on September 10th and it is the best thing I could have done. No more worries about what you can eat and when. I will say prayers that you can do it in one surgery. Keep up posted. -
I had my gastric revision operation one the 1st of Jun 2015 and until now I lost almost 28 lb. my problem now start after almost two month from operation, I feel the my appetite is high and I want to eat every two to three hours and sometime less although I try to drink Water when I feel hunger but after one hour I feel hungry again. Also, I feel I can tolerate to eat like one sandwich contain ham and cheese within 10 min without pain or diarrhea. I can swallow meat, chicken and all the solid food and I was wondering within this short period and my small pouch I should vomit if I can eat those staff. I asked my surgeon and he said that it’s different from people who had the RNY for the first time from the people who did the revision in weigh losing, I can understand that but how about the ability of eating and the appetite toward eating. Actually I am an emotional eater so I am freak that my RNY will not success I have done enough with gastric endoscopy and I don’t want to try it again. So is anybody had a conversion? And how was the eating portion? How often they feel hungry? I hope somebody can answer my question and give me the support because really I am leaving in a nightmare.

Insurance payment for revision?
Linda Hamsing Rosen posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I'm considering the lap band and am favoring it over the gastric bypass. Hopefully I won't have a problem but I've been wondering about this scenario: I lose a bunch of weight and then there's a problem with the band (erodes into stomach or whatever) and I need a revision to say the gastric bypass. Would the insurance pay even though I now have lost most of the weight? Would they require me to regain it first? I hope this doesn't happen but just trying to prepare...I have BCBS federal employees plan (FEP). -
DS vs Gastric Sleeve recovery? Can you tell me how your recoveries compared????
Strivingforbetter replied to Skittlesandrainbows's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I also had the DS on 6/9/17 and was revised from the band. The doctor did it in a few hours. I had three times the amount of pain when I had my band surgery because the port would pull when I bent over until it was healed and the doctor didn't give me any painkillers post-op. He handed my husband a few pills and sent me on my way. With the band, it was impossible to bend over for weeks. Let's put it this way, no one left the house until Mom's shoes were tied. I couldn't do it on my own. With the DS, I was able to bend over and pick things off the floor the first day home from the hospital and I only spent one night in the hospital. I was tired after the DS for the first two weeks, but by the third week, my life got back to normal. The pain was very minimal, at least for me. Now if you want to talk painful surgeries, a total knee replacement takes the prize in my book. I haven't had any experience with just the gastric sleeve part, only the full DS. Since the sleeve is part of the DS, I'm not sure why you've been told the DS would be an easier recovery. The DS is more complicated than the sleeve. Anyway, the recovery wasn't bad at all. -
I'm trying to find the right place to post this. I hope I'm right on this one. I am in the process of getting a revision from lap band to sleeve. I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old. I was wondering if anyone has done this before? I am wanting to still breastfeed until he is 1-2 years old. Do you think I can have the surgery and still breastfeed?

Hi. I had a lap band and then revised to sleeve. Lost over 100 lbs with band and then 40 something more with sleeve. I have to have a revision due to gerd and other complications from my sleeve. Luckily, I did not lose any of my hair on either procedures listed above... And I know losing weight is much slower after each revision so maybe I'll be lucky again this time around. I was wondering if any of you lost your hair after revising from sleeve to bypass. Thank you in advance.

Glad to hear you are doing well Sarita. I weigh myself 2-3 times a day, and I've done this since getting home. So, for the last 6 months, I've been scale obsessed. For some it works, for others it makes them insane. It works for me, so I do it. You'll see the pounds/kilos drop before you know it. I only had the drain after my leak repair surgery not with my initial revision from band to sleeve. I had the burning sensation as well, but it was remedied by my doctor prescribing Prilosec once daily to prevent an overproduction of acid.

I was on soft food 10 days after my revision but all my Dr. has me shooting for is 94g of Protein daily. I found some great ideas on a website called The World According to Eggface - give it a google if you are looking for ideas

Revisional Surgery Approved, Sleeve or Bypass....?
kiwi-scot posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Having had a lap band for 9 years, and it failing quite spectacularly! I have just been approved for revisional surgery. I have been given the option of Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass.... and I am struggling to decide which will be best for me. I understand both have their pro's and con's... Im aware of all the post surgery risks, but Im more concerned / would like to hear from people who have had sleeve / bypass for a number of years... at least 5 years ideally..... I would really appreciate any feedback on the following points that are worrying me: Bypass - Very little / No revisional options... has anyone had anything go wrong after a number of years? Dumping... How often does this actually effect people? Ive heard you get very 'noisy' digestion.. and a lot of wind!! Is this the same for everyone who has had bypass? Sleeve - Given this is relatively 'new' Im very interested in long term satisfaction / issues, if any? Ive heard after a few years the stomach can stretch and revision is likely to maintain restriction? Ive heard people revising from lapband to sleeve, often feel no restriction? it this common? Ive also heard the chances of getting heartburn are high with a sleeve? Are there many people who never had heartburn before surgery, who were effected post surgery? I am naturally a bit nervous having to have surgery again, and would appreciate your feedback. Look forward to any help from anyone. Thanks! -
Thinking about Gastric sleeve revision
Marcella young posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I Had My Gastric Sleeve Done IN June Of 2013 I STARTED Out At 327 An Got Down To 244 AS Of March 2014. I was hitting many obstacles an had a injury at work which made it to were i couldn't work out. I had many stalls an no longer loose weight an actually started gaining an now up to 271. After talking to my husband i sometimes think i never got the sleeve done the reason being is comparing everything to his. I never had the dye test done an wasn't loosing weight good. I was pretty much starving myself an was hungry all the time an even now when i eat i can eat a normal meal like someone that hasn't had it done. I emailed the doctors office that performed it because i now want some type of proof it was done. If it was done i wanna no why he left my sleeve big enough for me to not be able to get great weight loss like others an why did i not have the dye test done or they never called me for follow ups. Has anyone had anything simular like this happen to them an reconsidering a revision? -
Does Medicare cover a band revision + plication for a BMI of 27.5?
marfar7 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey all, I've had my band now for 3 1/2 yrs and have been very successful. Lost 104 lbs in 2 yrs and was 9 lbs from my goal of 135 last year. Then 10 mths ago, I had a minor slip. One that an unfill relieved my severe reflux, but also leaving me with less (much less) restriction. I still have 6cc in my 14 cc band. 1 more cc and it causes reflux. So my drs leaving me alone since I no longer have reflux. I've been going back and forth with: 1. I live with the less-than-optimal restriction, watch calories, diet (which I swore I'd never do after getting the lapband) and do it the old fashioned way. Leaving it alone. Living with a contraption inside of me that works about 75%. 2. Demand my dr fix it. I can either have it replaced, replaced with plication, or convert to a sleeve My ?: Medicare paid for my surgery, as my BMI was 42 and I had hypertension. Do they cover a 2nd surgery because of a complication even tho my BMI is now 27.5. Do they go by what my original BMI was or current? Will they cover adding the plication or just go for what it originally was? Not sure that I want to start fresh again, with surgery, 4 weeks of liquids, and many trips (6 hr roundtrip) to get my adjustments until they are good. So, does Medicare cover revision of my band only or can I add plication too? Thanks! Marci -
Band removal - United Healthcare
brittu replied to blondie1007's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just used UHC as an example of bariatric revision policies for my appeal. Here's what they say: Surgical revision or a second bariatric surgery is proven for inadequate weight loss if the original criteria for bariatric surgery (BMI, co-morbidities and patient selection criteria) continue to be met. Surgical revision of bariatric surgery is proven for complications of the original surgery, such as stricture, obstruction, pouch dilatation, erosion, or band slippage when the complication causes abdominal pain, inability to eat or drink or causes vomiting of prescribed meals. You can see it all on their web site at: https://www.unitedhealthcareonline.com/ccmcontent/ProviderII/UHC/en-US/Assets/ProviderStaticFiles/ProviderStaticFilesPdf/Tools%20and%20Resources/Policies%20and%20Protocols/Medical%20Policies/Medical%20Policies/Bariatric_Surgery.pdf -
Frustrated with insurance denial
Starwarsandcupcakes posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I called my surgeon’s office today because he submitted for a VSG to RYGB and was told it was denied because they want me to do 6months of supervised weight loss. I just had my VSG in December 2019! plus, their reason isn’t even listed under the revision surgery section in the handbook. Since then I’ve developed a new hiatal hernia, GERD to my mid esophagus and esophagitis. Of course I’ll file an appeal but I’m just frustrated. I’m sick of only getting 4-5hrs of sleep a night because the chest pain from the GERD is so bad it wakes me up. Im sick of taking the max allowed PPIs on top of 8-12 tums a day, and Thorazine for the hiccups causes by the GERD. I sent my surgeon a message asking for another prescription because I can’t take it anymore. I'm jus so frustrated. I just don’t want to be in pain anymore. -
Frustrated with insurance denial
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Starwarsandcupcakes's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
His words to me were “you need a revision to get rid of the GERD. I’m sending over a request for insurance approval.” This was July 1st. He wanted to have me in for revision before August. My surgeon is definitely a non-nonsense kind of person so I’m positive that he’ll be sending over an appeal as well.
