I second the AchievOne. Best-tasting protein drink EVER, if you like coffee drinks. The only drawback is that it comes in glass bottles--hard to stuff in your purse...

Gained it All Back but New Year, New Fill, New Me!
PrettyThick1 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So this is hopefully my last walk of shame. Since True Results went out of business, I now have to get my fills done by the surgeon who performed my operation. That's really a good news/bad news thing because now I have to take off a 1/2 day to get to the appointments on time, Houston is big and it takes forever to get from one side of town to the other - that's the bad news. The good news is that he makes me more accountable for my actions or lack there of. He was disappointed in me and said "so, we're right back where we started...and that's not good" and proceeded to put me on a very strict diet: only drinks with 0 calories, no food for Breakfast - only a Protein shake, lunch and dinner with no Snacks and nothing after 8:00pm, not even a carrot stick. So, today my current starting weight is 214.5, my goal is 175-185 at the lowest. I've been as small as 137, but I looked sick. I feel sexy around 180 so that's what I'm going for. I'll keep you posted. -
My doctor's rule for carbs is "as few as possible" and only from legumes, green veggies, dairy, and a tiny bit of fruit. I'm a little over a year out and have just started introducing quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and a little more fruit as a way of tip-toeing into maintenance. And remember, measure out your Protein, and eat all your meals in this order: 1. Protein (meat, legumes, Greek yogurt) 2. Green veggies 3. Fruit 4. Starches (including green peas and corn) If you plan it right, you should be full, or at least satisfied, long before you get to Step 4. I'm always stuffed by Step 2. And when hunger strikes between meals, ask yourself if it's really thirst in disguise? If you're behind on your Fluid intake, catch up on that first, then wait 15-30 minutes before eating. And finally, when you want a snack, make it protein-based (meat, cheese, nuts, yogurt, jerky). Good luck!

Cash pay from OK heading to Dallas- NERVES
stephmccurley posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have posted before a few years ago when I was trying for insurance approval and I was denied. But now my husband and I have decided to pay out of pocket for the surgery. I have been set on the lap band for 4 years now and have worked VERY hard just to get this far and I am looking at having surgery end of Feb or early March. But I talked to the receptionist at the surgeons office, which is in Dallas, and she said that the only advice she could give me is that the surgeon will try to talk me into having the sleeve instead of lap band. And when I asked her why she said "because he is taking out more bands than he is putting in now." So of course that got my nerves going. I have researched the good, the bad, and the ugly for this surgery and I feel like I can still be a success story. And seeing as how the sleeve is 3000 more that is not an option anyway. But I am nervous now that he won't want to do the surgery for me. I am now more nervous than ever! What do I do?! -
Cash pay from OK heading to Dallas- NERVES
parisshel replied to stephmccurley's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's funny, because the first surgeon I consulted with said EXACTLY THE SAME THING. "I don't do bands anymore, and overall surgeons take out more than they put in." He only did sleeves and bypasses, having stopped doing bands several years ago. So I went to see another surgeon. This one only does bands and bypasses and will not do sleeves. He is seeing sleeved patients end up in his hospital due to popped stiches, ulcers and peritonitus. "23 cms of stitches is a lot", was his comment. I've spent hours doing research on all the WLS options out there....truly days of reading data. And I found that you can find equal measures of arguments supporting and not supporting all the surgery options. It's true that I'm uncomfortable with the complications that may arise with the band, but on the other hand I'm more uncomfortable with the irreversibility of the other options. So I'm going with the band and the surgeon who believes this is my best option. -
Sorry to hear u had to go thru so much. I want to play this smart. This is a move by insurance to have the last option to denie you. They can interpret however they want and fits in their favor. I am not sure what to do.

It helped me a lot to focus on my preparations. Finding which protein shakes I liked, making a calendar showing my food stages, buying all the supplies I'd need, etc. It can definitely be emotionally overwhelming. This will be a HUGE life change and you will be giving up a lot of the things you have known for so long. Or at least THINK you are giving them up. Just try to focus on the day-to-day and not get too caught up in what-ifs.

Although I had my surgery in February - I hosted my husband's three day family reunion not long after my surgery. I cooked, baked cakes, bought bakery goods, etc - and served food throughout the three days. I had decided before the surgery what I could eat and when, and just set my mind to it - with little or no problems. I sat at the table with the family - ate my meals - and talked up a storm with folks I hadn't seen in a year. Everyone knew I had gone through the surgery, and eveyone was supportive. Looking back on the reunion - it was a lot of fun and I have great memories of it - and I don't remember any feelings of deprivation. Once, years ago, I was on the modi-fast diet. For nine months, I mixed powdered Protein mix into smoothies (no calories added except the protein powder) and ate nothing but smoothies and broth. I went through Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations with the family. My sister and law and I cooked the whole shebang for both celebrations. She was suffering from really bad inflammatory bowel syndrome at the time - and all she was eating was mashed potatoes. She had her potatoes, and I had my smoothie and my broth. We had a great time during those holidays. It really came home to both of us that the celebration of the holiday with the family is about so much more than just eating a great meal. It is about family and friends, and sharing accomplishments, and catching up on what people are doing. Both holidays have much deeper meaning than just a gift exhange and a calorie festival. The important thing is making up your mind before hand, and making a plan. Then - you just do it. It got to the point that it really didn't bother me. Good luck with your surgery. If you do go through the holidays on the pre-op diet or just after surgery - my thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Protein to speed weight loss????
rainbow_runner replied to 2911plans's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I never seem to have any trouble getting 80+g of protein per day and use no supplements or shakes, and keep my carbs at 40 or less, which has totally eliminated any cravings. I usually eat about 900-1000 cals a day, starting with a soft boiled egg for breakfast, lunch is usually tuna, chicken or deli ham for lunch with some spinach or other greens, and dinner is grilled chicken or sometimes steak or salmon, also grilled, along with some veg. I sometimes snack on 2% cottage cheese or deli ham & cheese (regular, sliced, havarti or whatever's in the store). Once in a while I eat cottage cheese mixed with berries, a tiny bit of stevia for sweetness, and 2 tsp. of ground flax - tastes like strawberry cheesecake! I'm down 36 lbs in 9 wks. I also walk 50-60 minutes 5-6 times a week, but otherwise have a very sedentary desk job. -
Anyone have an issue with Sucralose/Splenda?
Tamosy replied to BryBro63's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also had problems with it pre op. I have been dieting for years and learned a while back that splenda was not my friend. Immediately causes me headaches, bloating, intestinal discomfort... just miserable. I pretty much don't eat any sweets, because the fake sweeteners seem worse on my body than the real deal. I also relied post op on Isopure Protein drinks and had the same symptoms you describe. I haven't started by Vitamin regiment yet, so I'll have to look at that closely. Sorry, I don't have any great advice, but I can assure you that you are not alone. -
Sorry, most doctors would say no. Remember juice is all carbs and the most preop diets try to eliminate most carbs. You want to force your body to burn fat. It prefers to burn carbs first, Protein, then fat. If you are eating mostly protein the body is forced to after it burns the protein to turn to fat. Also post op most doctors don't want you drinking calories. The band will never stop you from drinking calories. The entire point of the band is to help you eat less solids.

Where does everyone buy their protein shakes?
clk replied to marfar7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh - and I'd be hesitant about buying too much before the surgery. Have some of a Protein that you already like on hand, of course. But my tastes changed dramatically post op. And over the course of the first year my "favorite" protein must have changed about seven times. There are several sites out there that do samples. I used vitalady's site to shop samples of many different brands and flavors and bought tubs of what I really liked. If you like sweet things Syntha-6 shakes are wonderful - like a treat - but higher in calories and lower in protein. But if you find yourself unable to find a protein you like post op, give them a try. -

I used unjury chicken flavored and GNC's Gold Standard Whey Protein in Vanilla. My trainer recommended the GNC Gold Standard Whey and my Dr. recommended the Unjury because I had a problem with lactose post-op. Lynda -
I am almost 6 months post op and it has happened to me several times through out. I find if I change up what I am eating and increase my protein it gives me a jump start and I start losing again. Make sure you are getting enough calories. Don't let your body go into starvation mode. Good luck!!!

I love Syntrax nectar Protein powders. I use the chocolate, Cappuccino or vanilla daily - a scoop (sometimes two) mixed into coffee, Water or tea. I honestly think the chocolate and cappucinno are fine in water. To me it tastes like Yoo-Hoo or a coffee drink and my husband (not sleeved, not overweight) agrees and drinks it sometimes, too. The vanilla is best mixed. I usually mix it with coffee or tea, like I said, but I've been known to shake it up with some orange crystal light or some OJ in the past. The fruit flavors are hit or miss for me. I like the Fuzzy Navel and the Natural line. They're okay with water but best with Crystal Light, in my opinion. And after trying about ten different unflavored Proteins, the Syntrax Unflavored is my absolute favorite. I put it in all sorts of things, including baked goods, and it has never left any funky taste behind. It smells a bit in the container but all protein does, I think. I buy mine on Amazon - only because I do subscribe and save for a lot of my household staple items so I save 20% each month and get free shipping, too. ~Cheri -

I start my pre - op diet Monday. So far I really like muscle milk chocolate only. strawberry taste like pepto bismol. I like them cause they are very high in Protein but have to be careful cause they are a little high in calories. Can't wait to try the Isopure and the chicken flavored something I seen in one of the post. Keep us posted on what you try and what you think about them and I will do the same. -
Tomorrow is 2 weeks until my surgery! I'm started the all protein liver shrinking diet. I'm so excited to have a jump start for starting 2013 new. I'm getting married in May 2014 and I am so excited for the changes I will see between now and then. Wish me luck!

Protein, water vs calorie intake.
Pinkpeonies1 replied to Pinkpeonies1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you everyone. Jess, yes I still drink one a day. I can't to more because they gross me out now. I'm fine if I take one early but if I drink one in the evening it's torture. Kate, you mean more as far as ounces per day or at any given time? Esskay that's what I was doing all this time, focusing on Proteins and Water intake. Then I kept on reading that calories need to be increased in order to lose weight. Since I had a stall for a few weeks it threw me off and I started to think that was the reason why. I'm glad to know that I'm doing it right. -
I made some rookie mistakes yesterday when I added fruit and vegetables to my protein shake. I put so much in that there wasn't room for hardly any ice. By the end of the drink, it just tasted like lukewarm beet juice. Today's is much better! 1 scoop of market pantry chocolate protein 3 tablespoons of organic fat free vanilla yogurt 1/2 large organic cucumber 1 handful of organic blueberries lots of ice This is a much smoother taste. And according to the interwebs, cucumber is a natural anti-inflammatory!

In the hospital, I was on Clear Liquids - stuff you can see through, like Water, Jello, broth. As soon as I got home, I was allowed to move on to full liquids - things you can drink through a straw if we were allowed straws, like milk, cream soups, thinned out pudding. At week two I moved on to purees - foods that are whizzed in the blender with enough liquid to make them roll off a spoon, like the consistency of baby foods. At week three I could have soft foods like mashed potatoes (without the skin), mashed veggies, soft cooked chicken, scrambled eggs, refried Beans with a little cheese. At the end of my first month (4 1/2 weeks) I graduated to whole foods cooked and well chewed. I had 1/3 cup Wendy's chili with cheese on the way home from my one month follow-up. At this point I was advised to cut back on the shakes and get my Protein from food. I could not tolerate raw veggies, salad greens, and nuts until I was past three months.

Sleeved in September-lost nothing since November!
ren0318 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi all it's been a while since I stopped by...to remind you about me I have type 2 diabetes, on an insulin pump. I needed to lose 85 lbs to be at my goal. I've lost 43 lbs and the last weight loss I did have was in November. I need some help. I don't think I'm eating the right foods. I feel like I eat the same 4-5 foods everyday. lunch meat, cheese stick, yogurt Protein bar and Protein shakes.... Not to mention how expensive the Protein Bars and protein power is. I feel lost....I want to lose this other 42 lbs. I don't even know how to get on track or what I should be eating, or how much. It's like everything that I learned in my prep classes, doesn't seem to fit what's happening now. I have been trying to attended Jazzercise 3-4 days a week and walk as much as I can. I'm 47 if that helps any advice given. I did this to hopefully get off the insulin pump my need for insulin has greatly reduced but still on the pump. Thanks in advance! -

You really need to be working, closely, with a nutritionist. The bars and shakes that you are having should be low calorie (<120-ish), very low carbs (<5) and high in Protein, at least 15-20 gms. Are you drinking enough, no calorie, liquids? I hesitate to give any further advice than that, due to your diabetes. A nutritionist can give you a detailed food plan, to follow. -
Feel crummy in the AM
artymama replied to artymama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am supposed to be on purée foods but I find it hard to get in the protein shakes and all the water. In during the day. I have no room for purée stuff! I called the dr and they said to take the purée slow, not a big deal at this point. Such a learning curve!!!
