  1. Consider the possibility that you are a sugar/food addict and need to cut out things like sugar, flour, white potatoes, rice, and processed foods. I've been pretty successful at losing (despite frequent stalls) by following this. Due to complications my RNY>RNY revision was not successful so I have no volume restriction. I HAVE to record everything I eat. My clinic wants me to restrict myself to 800 kcal a day, but I struggle with cravings even though my body is getting sufficient sustenance. Cutting out the trigger foods (above), helps with the craving but I'm usually consuming around 1000-1200 kcal a day--and still slowly losing. Here are some books I recommend.
  2. Hi, I am originally from Detroit. I am working in Texas for the Department of Defense. Maybe Sunday as I am preparing to go I will get nervous. I have a lap band now and I am going in for a revision to sa sleeve. I found out Monday that I would be having my surgery on the 24th. He did not even give me the two weeks for my pre op diet. I just hope everything goes ok because I did not do the pre op diet for 2 weeks. Also, he told me that he will not know if he will be able to give me the sleeve untill after he look at my stomach, because of scar tissue from the lap band. I have to think positive that everything will be ok because I really do not want to go under the knife twice to have one procedure. You will be ok. How long will you b in the hospital?
  3. Since Aetna denied my request for a revision I will be a self pay . What kind of complications Policy is out there to cover the potential of costs due to complications? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. Clean the junk food out of the house. Leave and go for a walk when your family eats. Your staple line is still healing. Food particles can get lodged in there, cause a severe infection, and possibly lead to a leak. Speaking from experience, a leak is not fun at all. If you think you can't live without food right now, get a leak, and postpone your healing even longer. I wasn't able to consume anything, liquid, ice chips, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING by mouth for 21 days due to having a leak after my revision from band to the sleeve. **Edit to add** I developed the leak because of the damage the band did to my stomach. I was only 2 days post-op, and still was not able to eat or drink anything when the leak was found on my 3rd and final leak test a couple of hours before I was discharged. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, and tell that everything will be okay. Surgeons have post-op diets for a reason. It isn't to punish you, or make you miserable. Your body, mainly your stomach has been through a traumatic experience, and you have to allow it proper healing time. Find a nutritionist/dietician, and a counselor/therapist if you aren't already working with someone to work on the mental aspect of this huge lifestyle change. I was not willing to "cheat" and risk another leak, or further complication because I couldn't keep crap food out of my mouth. It just isn't worth it especially considering you are a self-pay patient. I agree with the sugar-free popsicles, Protein drinks, try the Special K protein Water packets and SF Jello. Also, Edy's NO sugar-added fruit bars are wonderfully yummy, and help me stay off the sweets.

    February 2014 post op losers

Hi all, I just had my surgery on the 12th in Mexico. I had a revision from vsg to a bypass. I was discharged the next day. I am in alot of pain still and it's hard to breathe and stand up right. Has anyone experienced this? When can I expect to feel better?
  6. I don't think so. Talk to your surgeon. I had revision surgery and it was all done at once. My doctor told me beforehand if the scarring was too much he could do a sleeve or just remove the band and have me come back in 6 months for a bypass (I gather the scarring must break down over time). I did my research and found a surgeon with experience with revisions. Mine had done over 250 revisions and could tell just by looking whether I was good to go. Revision was the best thing I've ever done and I'm mad at myself for waiting so long. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  7. I got the lap band in 2009, and was successful in that I lost 129 lbs with it within the 18 mo. time frame and kept the majority of it off for many years. In April of this year, I felt I better go in and get a check-up to make sure everything is in order because I felt like I was hungry more often. The new doctor felt it was time for me to do a sleeve revision, told me that I have a dilated pouch. I had that once before years ago, and had to go 3 months with only half my Fluid to let my esophagus "rest". I dreaded to be unfilled again because I always gained some weight back, and I had to work twice as hard to get it off again. I couldn't talk them into not unfilling me hehe, so I said I'll go for the revision. I had my revision on Sept. 2, 2016, and am thrilled at the way I feel. No slimming, no painful pressure in the center of my chest... All those things one gets used to having the band all those years. I love it, and although I'm hungry during the liquid phase, it's not that bad at all. Lost 11 lbs in the last couple of weeks but I am prepared for the slower pace. As long as I'm losing, I'm happy with that. Good luck all, and hope you are as happy (or will be as happy) as I am with my new sleeve.
  8. In October 2007 I was sleeved in Perth Western Australia by a surgeon named Jon Armstrong (aka Gorgeous Jon). I had a textbook recovery and without really trying or exercising I lost 50kg (over 100 lbs) in the first six months. I went down from 380 lbs to 260lbs and was feeling great. Then I separated from my husband, and ended up having a nervous breakdown and leaving my job. I was diagnosed with major depression, Binge ating Disorder and anxiety. During this time I turned to my old friend food for comfort and started eating junk food and binge eating. I discovered I could eat a lot more than I had before and fairly soon was back to regaining weight. Bad food choices, snacking and overeating led me to stretch my sleeve and now I've regained half of the weight I had lost. Most surgeons consider less than 50% excess weight lost as a VSG "failure". My surgeon has suggested I think about having a gastric bypass as I am still morbidly obese. He's refused a revision or a lapband on the sleeve. I am trying the pre-op liquid diet to kick start my weight loss and will then go on to counting calories and exercising to try and shift some of the weight as I think the bypass is a last resort. More surgery?! I don't know. It's already cost me $20,000 to get this far and I will be out of pocket another $8,000 if I have the bypass. My surgeon has done over 500 procedures and only has three "failures". He suggested my stomach may be overly efficient and empties very quickly, enabling me to eat almost as much now as I did before surgery. Examples: 250g steak, fries and salad or six slices of pizza. I am seeing a therapist to help with my emotional eating and binge eating issues. i really wish I had seen a counsellor before and after my surgery to address these problems early on. I don't regret having the VSG, because I am still lighter now than before the surgery. But I wish things had turned out differently... I now weigh 137kg (about 300 lbs) and need to get down to 80kg to be almost healthy weight range. I'm desperately hoping my stomach will shrink back a little now I'm doing a 12 week liquid and vegetables diet.
  9. I'm sorry you had such a terrible time with your band! I have seen a ton of band to sleeve revisions on this forum. My coordinator said he sees a lot coming in to the practice. If I recall correctly, my surgeon told me he doesn't even place bands anymore. He feels like they have too many complications and that there are better options. I hope you'll be thrilled and complication free with your new sleeve! ~Kat

Why RNY and not the sleeve?

I had Lapland too for over 6 years, lost some weight, had it revised to Rey gastric bypass, Jan 14 th, how r u doing now?
  11. Hi all. I have had a lap band since 3/2009. Although I have maintained a 70 pound weight loss, the band has been progressively tightened to the point that now I have esophagus irritation so it has been determined to be "failed" and now I need it removed. I started my journey at 320 pounds, and now I am at 250. Goal weight 180 pounds. On Monday I head into surgery to have the band removed (it has been released for two months) and a gastric bypass performed. My question is how many that have has this procedure done were unable to do it in one surgery? The surgeon only gives it a 50/50 shot as apparently the underlying tissue associated with the band site may not support correctly creating the new pouch. I would really hate to have to do this in two separate surgeries several months apart, and apparently I won't know until I wake up how it turns out. All pre surgery checks including a barium swallow and an endoscopy all indicate the band is still properly placed, but apparently they have to be inside during the surgery to know for sure if there has been any erosion. Thanks in advance for any input! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Gastric Bypass vs. Sleeve

Bypass was never an option for me. I'd choose DS over RNY if I was forced to make that decision. Luckily, VSG was an option for my revision, I had to fight for it, but I got it. I was never interested in a malabsorptive procedure especially RNY. I figured the 2 years of malabsorption of calories and fat was not a fair trade off for a lifetime of malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins. Considering RNY patients only malabsorb for 18-24 months, I figured what the heck am I going to do for the rest of my life if I rely on malabsorption to get me to goal? Plus, I had a pouch with the band. My body hated the pouch. It's not natural, it didn't work for my body, and I knew RNY would give me the same pouch/stoma combo. Add in that only 30% of RNY patients dump with sugar, it just wasn't appealing. I've watched friend after friend have multiple long term complications with RNY. I can't count how many of them are deficient on some vitamin, one friend is going in for her 4th surgery related to her 7 yr old RNY pouch. This time, her intestines are twisted, and obstructed, and she's malnourished to the point of her teeth falling out because she malabsorbs so much of the nutrients she eats. For me, I just didn't want to deal with the long term complications that I've witnessed with friends in real life. I love having a normal, full functioning stomach. If VSG would not have been an option for my revision, I would have had my band removed, and stayed fat. Many patients win appeals for VSG. Work with your surgeon, and if your surgeon won't work with you, find a surgeon that will give you the surgery you want. You have to live with the surgery type for the rest of your life, not the surgeon. Best wishes, and don't give up or give in on getting the sleeve if you truly believe it is the best option for your long term health, and life goals.

    Surgery in September

Toasty, that was definitely an incomplete thought LOL Yes, I'm being revised from a band to a RNY.. I am getting married in December and I didn't know if I should wait until December or have it right away (in September). Decided that I'm not going to risk losing the approval and will have it in September. There is also the thought of forever losing my ability to eat what I want. The very thing that got me here in the first place. I remember grieving for food when I was banded and I'm sure it will even be worse with this new surgery. But I will move forward with this.
  15. I am considering a revision from the band to bypass. I know little about the process, and bypass in general. I don't know if my insurance will cover it, and right now I am in that awful catch 22 of weighing too little for surgery but too much to have a healthy lifestyle, so there are a lot of ifs there. Assuming all the planets align though, what questions did you have for your doctor? My family is pretty much convinced bypass means I am going to die, so I'd like to calm their fears. Thanks!
  16. So it turns out that they could do the revision in my case once they were in there and checked out the tissue. Surgery was done on 2/6/17 however due to some complications I was just released yesterday. Also Ended up getting a gout flair up starting yesterday that currently hurts more than any of the surgery locations. Supposed to get staples out tomorrow. I gained quite a bit of weight in the hospital which should come off pretty fast as it is excess fluid, then I can start actually tracking how the weight loss is doing.

    Sleeve vs bypass

@@sandeebYes, i will be having one. Im now keani g towards the gastric bypass, i dont want, anymorw surgeries after this, like a revision that so many people have to get. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  18. Similar process as GreenTealael. Only difference was that since my surgery was a revision, they offered a epidural and that was done in the operating room. They also asked if I would be ok with a direct line in my neck as it would make injections and taking blood easier later. I said yes to both. 9 hours later I was waking up feeling like I was hit by a semi truck minus the broken bones. After recovery where your pretty out of it and I can barely remember much from it other then a nice nurse that hit a button when I said I hurt. They rolled me up to my room where I took inventory. Besides the incision site, I had 3 drains, Feeding tube coming out of my abdomen. What I didn't expect was my right leg and left arm were sore if not in pain. This was due to how I was laid on the operating table. The nurses were nice about it and provided ice packs to help recover. Your Milage May Vary though as all surgeries are different. Good Luck!

Congrats on your initial success and for the birth of your girls! Before considering revision - try doing the pouch reset to see if you can get back to losing. Welcome back!

    Bypass or Sleeve

I agree- see someone else. I had GERD and Barrett's esophagitis with a Barrett's polyp. My surgeon did not even give a 2nd thought to doing gastric bypass because of the history. He told me that anyone with bad GERD before surgery could have it worse after a sleeve, and in those cases, bypass is the better option. My GERD is gone now. If you have GERD now, you may end up with a revision to bypass down the road, and IMHO, why not just get the bypass now and be done with it.

    Just another story

I am revising from band to sleeve in Sept. my advice = write a heartfelt letter with details on how under your last insurance you got the band and have been compliant with it and did your best - but the band failed you.. I'd even post other ins. companies policy statements on revision. Then ask ever so humbly that they pay to have the band removed and while the doc is "in there removing the band" that he revises your stomach to the sleeve - then quote all the great things about the sleeve. I'd also write a letter for you to give to your PCP or other doc for him to state the (1) removing the band and (2) revision to VSG is medically necessary.

    Thing I miss most

It’s definitely tough but you can do it! There is so much variation among practices and even case by case. I was given clearance to eat/drink at the same time after I asked for a definitive answer. For my specific circumstance it was ok because I had a stricture dilated (after VSG to RNY revision) and my anastomosis wasn’t going to stretch any further than they forced it during the procedure. I was told that the concern is sleeve/pouch stretching earlier than it would take to naturally relax.

    Hospital Stay

My revision was overnight stay. Insurance approved 3-4 days. But I did great and wanted to be in my own bed. Oh, and the band removal and RNY was all one surgery. Took 2 hrs. 5 laparoscopic incisions. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. The trend is that doctors are doing more and more revisions from lapband to RNY.I think the more you have to lose the better choice is the RNY,just my opinion.
