  1. Well, I have lost 31 pounds since Oct. 5, 2007. It's not coming off as fast as I would like, but the key thing is that it is coming off. I know I couldn't have lost 31 lbs. without surgery so I am happy with my decision. I am loosing about 5 lbs. a month. I'm exercising more now and that makes me feel better about myself. I've motivated a friend and she now exercises with me. I had my 4th adj. on Jan. 31st and I can really tell a difference in the amount I can eat. I have gotten sick a few times, eating too fast, not chewing enough, so I try to be really careful, but sometimes it happens. I know I will reach my goal, one day at a time! :rolleyes2:

    Is my incision infected?

Sorry about your pain. Why the hell a surgeon would use skin staples on a laparscopic patient is beyond me. Also doctors frequently use a clip applier inside, which are relatively similarish to staples.
  4. Personally, I think its both. We all know its possible to lose weight without a lapband simply with willpower. restriction takes the willpower bit away to some degree, but the behaviour modification sitll have to come from you. I think however that we must be realistic about what the band is doing - even unfilled. Overtime, nearly everyone will require some fill to keep the weight coming off. And statistically, behaviour modification or not, nearly every single person that loses their band regains their weight over time. It just is. So I am thankful for my band, I dont abuse it by making it over tight, I work hard on behaviour changes, but I hate to say that even after six years, behaviour modification isnt the whole answer. I had to have my band ufnilled for over six months - I didnt gain but I hung on by the skin of my teeth. I was able to stick to heatlhy foods and not go wild on McDonalds but the portion sizes increased, hunger increased, etc. And my body, that is now used to eating small amounts and running on under 1500 calories, now cannot cope with normal person amounts of foods - the 2000 or so I am *supposed* to be able to eat at my height, weight, level of activity - I cant. I am now forever dependent on my band because I cant afford to eat more than 1500 a day. And that's from someone who practiced behaviour modification - I ran, I did bootcamp (well I still run and do bootcamp), I ate good foods from all food groups and worked hard to shed the dieting mentality, I cut out counting, weighing, measuring and learned to listent o my body. Works well with the band - without the restriction fronm the band, my body tells me it needs more than it does. I dont mean to be negative, this is a very positive post and everyone is on the right track. But we need these bands and eventually most of us need fills too.

    Tomatoes - Realistically?

I've been eating tomatoes regularly once I started solids phase. Just be careful with the skin.

    Is my plan realistic?

The first doctor came very highly recommended as a plastic surgeon, he does very well for himself in the "Main Line" which is french for old money around the Philly area. I met with him twice and was disappointed not only in his before and afters but also his bedside manner. Now, geniuses don't have to be all friendly and extroverted, but I just got a discordant vibe from him. Like a robot. Plus he'd never done ANY weight loss patients, and no idea what my port would end up looking like and had no suggestions. The other lady completely turned me off. She wasn't just cold, she was rude to me. She actually reprimanded me for not losing all the weight, and to "lay off the cookies" and that I might need a lower body lift because "when you balloon out to a beach ball shape there's bound to be flappy skin in the back." I almost killed her. Like I don't have enough fledgling self esteem! Sure, maybe I was oversensitive, but her bedside manner was extremely condescending. She said "I can't give you ANY kind of waist, you know." Just so negative!!! I may look to NYC where my band was done. I'm SURE they have great PSes up there

    Bulging disks?

Hi, I haven't been sleeved yet (meeting the surgeon the first time on Wednesday), but I do have bulging disks in my lower spine. In fact in 2007 I underwent an operation for one of them because it was pinching the nerve that went down my right leg - so much so that it hurt constantly and I actually could not move a couple of days because of it. My doctors at the time (the surgeon and my gp) all told me that if I was to loose weight it would help the situation in my back. I'm finally getting around to following their advice after living with the pain for all these years. I truly hope they are right. It would certainly make sense for the pain to ease up - after all your back is supporting your entire torso. And if your overweight, it has even more to support and thus under more stress. By loosing the weight, it removes some of that burden so reduces the stress on your back.

    What's your goal weight?

My personal goal weight is 175... I'm 5'8'' and 175 is still considered overweight.. But I got down to 186 A few years ago and started seeing my ribs. I don't wanna just be skins and bones.. I still wanna have some meat! My suggestion would be to talk to your doctor. They should have an idea. However don't always take what they say to hear. I have doctors tell me to be 150 and I think is look sickly. Maybe make small goals.. Start with getting down to 250. Then maybe 225 as your next goal. Keep going down till your comfortable. I also figure your body will know your ideal weight. You can eat right and live the lapband lifestyle and your body will stop at where its good at and your in a healthy weight range. By no means am I saying if u hit a plateau at 250 or whatever your body is saying... Ok I'm done! Good luck to you!! I'm sure you'll figure out your own personal goal soon!!

    Hey!

Wow, so I didn't know that this site made other improvements besides their name! I like this better, now I can go read forums about other procedures. I originally had the LapBand. Had to have it removed due to infection. Gained all of what I lost (47 pounds). Trying to lose it on my own and it's such a struggle. If I don't lose at least 20 pounds by the end of may, I think my decision would be to get the gastric sleeve, a handful of people one here suggested it. I'd be so scared of them taking half of my stomach out, having it stapled and then losing the weight too fast and ending up with lose skin :/ don't want lose skin and don't want plastic surgery. Jumping ahead of myself here... Anyways, now I can get more info, yay!

    Hey!

Whether you lose the weight fast or slow the loose skin will either tighten up or it won't over the long haul. It has to do with genetics and age more than anything else. I am now 65 and over 2 years out, lost 130 pounds and my skin is still slowly tightening. I expect it will not tighten completely thus making my midsection look like a cut-out from a romance novel cover. The alternative in my case would be very wrinkly skin in my casket 6 feet under.
  12. ps. telll us all about it...how much money ?? did insurance cover any? how long did you have to be at, or near your goal weight to qualify? Who was your doc? Did you hurt a lot?? my insurance covered a panniculectomy...which would have removed the skin...but not have tucked anything...and would not have gotten rid of the fat from over my hips...u know how there is a little fat roll...from the big fat roll on ur sides...all fat rolls gone...lol...i had to pay $3000 out of pocket...the rest was covered...it was painful...hurt more then my c-section...but i got real sick from the pain medication...the pain wasnt as bad as how sick i got...i felt horrible and thats an understatement...my plastic surgeon was dr. kryger in thousand oaks...

    Faster Weight Loss With Exercise?

I have been exercising from 4 weeks (prior to that I was just walking), but was cleared for light exercise at 4 weeks and full exercise from 6 weeks. I have been loosing about3.5 pounds a week. I dont think I would be loosing as fast if I wasnt exercising. I do a mix of cardio and weight training as well as personal training sessions. I think it also helps maintain tone on my body, maybe when I get to the end I wont have copious amount of extra skin this way.

    Should I tell my housemate?

No need for him to know about it . I haven't told my close friends only one , but she is my very best friend that encouraged me to have the surgery done and I asked her not to tell anyone. And I am not thinking of telling any one else . My parents and siblings know but that is all . And since now you are not staying with him and spending the first couple of weeks with your family. So it shall pass and no one should know . And just say I am on a diet and I had a personal trainer to help me loose the weight. Best of luck Sent from my SGH-I337M using the BariatricPal App

Low Cal Alcohol Options? At All?

I agree with the above. I love my occasional drinks and I don't feel guilty because of it. The band has helped me significantly cut my calories and I'm still loosing, even after the weekends that I drink. I still have and LOVE my beer, wine, and cocktails. Some low calorie options are wine, vodka and light cranberry, and there are also some Crystal light mixers that I have yet to try but heard they are amazing!

    Bad Breath......p.u

an elevated level of ketone in the blood. Ketone is formed by ketogenesis when the liver glycogen stores are depleted and a process called lipolysis starts. Non medical terms = your body begins to use fat for energy and ketones are formed. Look up ketosis in google for some great in depth article. One way your body gets rid of ketones is through your lungs. It's like the alcohol smell, you can't get rid of it you just have to cover it up. Anyone who is loosing wt is making some and one way to test for them is the urin strips discussed above. Don't be worried its a good sign. It will go away when your wt stabilizes. My wife does not like the smell so I end up chewing a lot of gum.
  17. Hi all! Surgery will on 12/4/12. My doctor (Michael Schweitzer) does not require a pre-op diet only 24 hrs prior surgery. I would like to loose some weight before surgery and don't know what to do. Any advice on pre-op diets? Thanks!

    I'm 3 Weeks Post-Op

I too am 3 weeks post op today...the first probably 1 1/2 weeks I felt full fast. Now I can definitely eat more then a cup if I tried. Last night I had a stuck episode and was so pissed at myself because it was my fault. I got cocky and didnt chew like I needed to. Got my head back in the game today and will never trail off the road again. My port sticks out a little...definitely can feel it, skin is itchy today and port site is sore. Being over 300lbs i never thought I'd see my port, especially at this time...maybe just still swollen. First fill is next Tuesday looking forward to exercising more soon just so I can feel better about my journey. Good luck!

Anyone Been Banded 8 Yrs Or More Like Me?

I had surgery on 6 Jan 2012 and touch wood have been very well since. Havent had a fill yet as still trying to get follow up care on the NHS. so dont want to have a fill privately incase they use it against me. Problem is i have put on 8 pounds since op. Was loosing at first but now my stomach has settled down i am so hungry again all the time. i am also having trouble with trapped gas in hte upper part of my tummy. It swells up like a balloon by evening. Doctor just says it is normal and i should ask my surgeon. Problem is the NHS (Grimsby) have now refused to pay for op so i have been discharged and until i see if i get funding in Welwyn Garden City (where i now live) i am in limbo!
  22. People seem to loose ALOT of weight FAST with the sleeve, the one where they cut out your stomach. I had plication done and I am losing weight and feel fabulous, but I think if I had the sleeve I would be loosing faster. I had my surgery January 10th, I was 272lbs and a size 22/24 jean. Today I am 238 and a size 16 jean. My surgeon was Dr. Abril in Mexicali and he performs ALL of the different weight loss surgeries. If you want any information let me know. Good luck.
  23. Hi Deedee, and welcome to the forum! The idea of loose, hanging skin is one that many of us fret over, and many of us have to deal with. Rapid weight loss (plus age, though I don't know how old you are) can be contributing factors to why skin loses its elasticity. I don't want to have to deal with it either, but some hanging skin is a much better alternative than a belly covered in a thick layer of fat! Many insurance companies don't cover the cost of cosmetic surgery, however, depending on your circumstances, it is possible to have skin removal covered if your doctor deems it medically necessary- for instance, if the folds of skin are causing a serious irritation and/or rash or infection that doesn't clear up. Not that I would wish that on anyone, just passing along some things I've learned. I'd also recommend keeping up with your exercise. Exercise is very important not only to helping the weight come off, but it can (depending on what you choose to do) help reduce the amount of loose skin you might have to deal with. Good luck to you!

    can you feel the port?

Chickie...thanks! ARe you still eating less than a cup of food per meal as well and 3 meals a day...did any of that change since you were actively loosing weight? I'm not very comfortable right now, so I'm curious as to if I'm destined to feel this way forever. I've been told I'm too tight, but hard to imagine when I can't budge the scales for a couple of months now, but can't eat much of anything solid. Love your pictures! I'm very impressed! My husband runs every day of his life...he's run the Ultra's too. I know all about how it get's in your blood...just not mine:rolleyes2:
