    Surgery sch. For May 8th!

Hi Manuela, Are you having the lap band done or a revision? My surgery is on May 6th and I'm having a revision from the lap band to the gastric sleeve. I begin my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow. Nervous and excited all at the same time!

Got A Date Band To Bypass

Congrats! My revision is Jan. 24 and I am overly nervous... I wanted to ask the purpose of the binder?

Favorite Sugar free or alternative foods?

Forget snacks entirely unless they are protein or vegetable. They grease the slippery slope to regaining what you have lost. I speak from experience. I am approaching RNY revision and I will not make the same mistakes again. The pre-op food plan and the (clear/full liquid/puree) stages post op while we are not getting hungry give us the opportunity to establish a new way of eating. If we seek sugar-free or keto snacks we are merely making some substitutes for the OLD way of eating. It's too easy to find ourselves eating sugared and carbohydrate snacks and food when we don't happen to have the "-free" type. Just because substitute snack foods are sold on bariatric sites does not mean they are good for us. If we are wise we will ignore those products. Eat whole foods, fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits, quality poultry and meat products. Avoid sugar, sugar substitutes, wheat/flour products, and processed foods. We can get plenty of tasty food to eat with these choices. I encourage you to obtain and read these two books by Dr. Matthew Weiner: A Pound of Cure and The Bariatric Guide and Cookbook. There are lots of other bariatric cookbooks available, too, including some for Air Fryers, InstaPots, and CrockPots. These will help you learn your new way of eating.
  4. Be Careful stopping meds. I felt wonderful with no reflux for weeks after surgery( banded on Nov. 7, 2007) but let me explain why I went back on nexium. 20 yrs ago, my mother had a dacron band put on her stomach called gastric segmentation by Dr. Molina in Houston, Texas. When I started my LapBand process, she wanted to see about having a revision done on hers. We both went for endoscopy together. Her results returned saying she had Barrett's esophagus( precancerous changes to lining of esophagus) She didn't realize the acids were still washing into her esophagus pretty bad because of her band but they were. The doc put her on protonics and keraphate and eventually she ended up going through a grueling 6 hr. operation to remove her old band that had gotten very constricted and they fixed her up with a gastric bypass on Dec. 10, 2007. She is still trying to recover. I would suggest if you do stop the meds, have an endoscopy every other year or so to be safe.

    Red Zone is NO JOKE!

@ccjll: First of all, I'm so happy you were seen quickly and before damage had been done. And I'm thrilled to learn action was taken immediately to get you out of pain and back to normal. Your post is important and I agree should be read by all. I'm not sure what forum this is under but you might be doing everybody a favor by reposting it in Fills and Adjustments? Just a thought... I totally agree that fast weight drop is too high a price to pay for those who love to keep their bands tight. I just shake my head at the lapband blogs I read when the blogger describes loving being too tight to do anything but Protein shakes, or PBing with each meal but "hey, that's ok", or the daily vomiting. This all leads to (at the least) band failure/revision surgery or worse, damage to one's body. Glad you are babying your band and out of pain. What a relief, right?

Bet you're sorry you voted for Obama now

Way to miss the post of my post entirely. For the first time in my LIFE there is a president in office that I am proud of. I can go to a foreign country now and not pretend to be Canadian. Obama has completely put a standstill on the rapidly falling unemployment rate and has purposed and put into motion a complete revision of the healthcare system (death panels my ass, anyone who calls it a death panel didn't read the actual purposal). I am proud to be American. For me to be able to say that is incredible, because I thought my country would never make me proud until Obama.
  7. Just had my revision from band to sleeve yesterday and I'm feeling great. So much less pain than when I had the band put in 5 years ago. Wishing a quick and easy recovery to all of you 3/16 folks!!
  8. First, congratulations on surviving breast cancer! Secondly, I was sleeved December 4th, no dumping for me however I do have terrible GERD. There's no malabsortion srestriction but I do keep up on my Vitamins, vitamins are important!! Its a "tool" I still make the daily decisions however best choise I ever made. Im on ppi for gerd, I think if that doesn't correct itself I'll probably have to have the revision to bypass. I don't know the waiting period, does anyone else know? Good luck!!! Thank you in advance :-)

    Dialated esophagus

Thanks I will definetly focus on chewing more. I take a Gi on the 29tth to see if it goes down. On the 4th of Feburary I go back to my surgeon to consider next steps if it is down he said he would consider starting a slow refill or the band will have to be removed and consider a revision

Surgery date March 16th, who's with me? ????

How did it go? I got revised from band to sleeve this morning and feeling great (all things considered lol). Not about to run any races quite yet That's great thundergrrl!!!!! And haha same here! I was expecting a lot of pain just preparing myself for what some were saying here and I guess I was a lucky one...just have some soreness but the hydromorphone (morphine?) is taking care of that ...I have a high tolerance for pain though too so that could be it. My mouth is dry still and sleep is always difficult in a hospital, but I'm also an extremely light sleeper. They just came in and took bloodwork, I'm guessing the doctor will be seeing me around 8am Hope everyone is doing good! Check in here if u can, I'd like to know yall made through fine

    Band to VSG or Bypass

Sorry for the delay in my reply, with the holidays I let time get away from me. I has my revision this past April. It has been wonderful! All of the reflux issues are gone and the bypass isn’t anything scary yo deal with at all. Weight loss has been steady and I am right where I want to be, comfortably.

Trying to change but unsure what to do....

If you are near Chicago you should see suburban Surgical Associates part of Kane baristric center. I had the band in 2008 and did great until about 2014. Then weight came back. I had a revision last month. Gastric Sleeve. Dr. Paul Guske did both procedures. Go see him. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app

    Bye Bye Lap Band! Approved!

Just had band to rny revision five days ago. I'm happy but have the same fears as you about maybe failing...

    Constipation

I'm almost 5 years out from revision of Rny to ds.. anything high in fat or sugar gets me. I've been at goal a few years but I bounce around 5/7 lbs. when I hit that high side I usually eat buttered popcorn or a few cookies. Gets things moving for me. You are still recovering though.. dr advice might be wise.
  15. Hello, has anyone had revision from sleeve to bypass? Was it hard to get insurance to cover it?

    OH Juli's Plastic Surgery

Juli and Lellow, I'll be keeping tabs on both of you as well as it sounds like we are all having similiar surgeries. I am scheduled for April 30th for tummy tuck with 360 degree cut, vertical incision, liposuction, hernia repair and port revision. I wanted to have the surgery at the end of March or 1st of April, but trying to schedule the plastic surgeon and general surgeon together was difficult. My surgery is supposed to be around 5 1/2-6 hours. I am going home the same day and following up with my plastic surgeon the following day. I am going to be optimistic and try to get back to work after having 3 weeks off, but we'll see how that goes. I am not at my goal weight either, but this timing is right for me. I don't know if I'll post pics or not either. I am extremely modest!! It kills me every time I have to stand naked in front of the plastic surgeon! Cathy

    OH Juli's Plastic Surgery

I am debating on whether or not to get an unfill too. Does a port revision mean that the Fluid will be drained from the band automatically? If that's the case, I'm not sure I want a low profile port, but I will still need the port moved as it is sitting next to my belly button and the hernia that is going to be repaired. As for the unfill, I don't wear my band tight either, but I have problems every single month that I have my period. The band gets super tight and I can't eat anything but liquids or I'll PB. I certainly don't want problems after the tummy tuck, but I like my restriction where it is now (except for TOM). Cathy

    Calories!

Hi all I know we're all at different stages and we're all going to consume various foods but I am curious about calories! As a band to sleeve revision patient and now 6ish weeks out, I am getting those horrible 'OMG am I going to succeed? Is my sleeve tight and small enough? Am I eating way more than everyone else?' thoughts...... I've started tracking calories and I generally have around 800-1000 calories but I feel like it's quite easy to get up to 1000. At weeks 2-4 I struggled A LOT with foods and just didn't really have the drive to watch my food intake and protein. Now, I feel like my hunger is coming back and that freaks me out. No heartburn or anything, and I've had my 40 grams of Somac on a daily basis, but I KNOW I feel hunger. I just get in a bit of a negative headspace and worry that the sleeve won't be 'viable' for me. I am very determined, yet am at a stall. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to know what you guys typically eat in a day too! THANKS

    Dr. Ortiz?!?

I am scheduled for 5/28 ( next Monday). I chose Dr. Ortiz cause a friend had her revision surgery ( from band to sleeve) w/ him @ OCC 6 mo. ago. She was VERY pleased w/ surgeon, staff, facility and had no complications. She will be going with me when I go. BTW -- SHE LOOKS AWESOME! MY PCP is aware I am going to MX. She did say she would do labs / normal health care but wouldn't treat anything to do with the surgery. I have not told my boss. I may send him an email prior just to advise I am having elective surgery while out on PTO (vacation).

    WLS before or after children

I have a child and I am currently 1 week post RNY. Like you I wanted a sleeve but my reflux was too bad and I wanted to avoid another possible surgery in the future to correct it or convert it since it's not just that easy as oh just get a revision. My husband and I are not planning to have more kids per say, but if after my waiting period something happens then we would be thrilled!! We had to endure trying, expensive, and frustrating fertility treatments in order to have our child and while I wouldn't change it for the world, if I had to do it over I would have had surgery first. I'm reading some misinformation on here in regards to malabsorption and by no means am I an expert and truthfully that is the exact reason I was afraid to have RNY, but truth is your body may not receive as many calories or nutrients from foods that aren't the greatest for you. That is the benefits to malabsorption. Your stomach doesn't just dump everything the second you ingest it unless in most people it's pretty unhealthy and in that case you're not receiving nutrition from something like that anyway even if you didn't have the surgery. My very good friend had RNY almost 6 years ago and while she still had issues getting pregnant she is currently pregnant with her second child in less than a year lol! Actually her children will be 1 year and 9 days apart if baby 2 stays in there that long ha ha! She had zero complications as it relates to her surgery and was substantially healthier and more readily able to carry a child because of it. The only thing that's common in terms of a normal pregnancy and RNY is having your glucose testing done differently and finding a dr that had treated and delivered babies to mothers that have had RNY just in case. Back to the malabsorption, as long. As you are eating correctly and being religious about taking your vitamins as directed by your bariatric program/surgeon you shouldn't ever be malnourished. This requires follow up blood work and specified intervals forever and reporting to your doctor if you feel off. Also eating for 2 is not healthy and it's not a thing, you literally only need 100 more calories a day when you are pregnant and that essentially an extra, healthy protein filled snack. I would not be concerned about malabsorption since there is a big difference between malabsorption and malnutrition and as long as you stick to the plan and take your supplements and get in your protein you would be fine. I know a lot of people do research into the things they want to do and their surgeries but I kind of go over board on it before doing anything and for me this was the right choice! All of the research I read about pregnancy after WLS showed significant higher numbers of healthy babies and healthy mothers with a drastic reduction in pregnancy/higher weight related complication such as GD, PreE, bed rest, etc.. I was lucky I had a healthy pregnancy and a healthy daughter and while I wasn't as big as I am now I only gained 20lbs my entire pregnancy, ate healthy, and kept active. I however was always worried and I actually switched doctors about 12ish weeks in because my weight was an issue for them and I would leave every appointment crying. You need to make the choice that's right for your life, but word of advice I don't think I will ever go back to regular vitamins you swallow even though they say 6-8 weeks after you can take pills like normal. I think it's better to have the nutrients available almost immediately for absorption by allowing them to dissolve or using chewable.

    Revision

Any news on your revision nikki2524? Are you feeling any better? That's strange, that nurse telling you since your body wouldn't use the calories to go ahead and eat anything. Doesn't sound like any Bariatric nurse I've ever met. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Hi, I am having my revision on May 6th. I am 162 pounds and have had my band for about 16 months and it has been pretty rocky. I have a slow leak which caused them to fill the band so much I couldn't hold down water and this went on for months. I was throwing up constantly, woke up crying with heartburn in the night, and feel all my food go down no matter how much I chew. I was worried about losing too much weight and looking sick, however, my doctor and others in this situation assure me that your body plateaus at a certain weight and will stop or slow down. He told me I may loose another 20-25 pounds which is ok by me. I will take the chance to be rid of this discomfort. Good luck with you decision.

    cost of my RNY-

Almost 2 years later, I am actually suing my surgeon for "double-dipping". I paid as a "self-pay" (ie 100%) then he billed a bunch of "medical" ( ah, cough-I call #&%$& - cough)to insurance and they actually paid him!! So, he got paid twice!! And, I had no unexpected or necessary procedures, nor did I have ANY complications. They get away with it because, as long as the patient is not asked to pay anything beyond their co-pay and what insurance pays (for those with bariatric coverage), they don't really care HOW the doctor bills it to get it paid...so, of course, they take both payments. Insurance can't help, because they can't tell the MD what codes to bill; Insurance Board doesn't care because they only regulate insurance; AMA doesn't care because no "malpractice" (as far as injury. My primary physician even said it was "illegal as hell" but not really surprised by it. Funny...both the hospital AND anesthesiology wrote off everything except the amount I paid up front...yet the surgeon didn't.....HHHHHMMMMMMM. The "average" self-pay price for a revision gastric bypass is about $23,000 in my region. I had two quotes, both right around that amount. My doc got closer to $35K...imagine that, on a quote/contract of $22K!!! I guess it's largely because they are rich and "powerful" (ie, can afford an attorney/staff, etc) and we can't...the rich get richer, huh???

    September Sleevers

Hey hey family. I had a really good day today. My 3 month check up with my surgeon and nutritionist was today. Eavann my nut asked me do i remember what i said during my first consultation on what weight I'd like to achieve with my surgery. At the time I was 156kg 345lb (ish) and said 100kg or about 220lbs. I then proceeded to completely and utterly forget about this. Fast forward to today and i had my weigh in and I was 101kg. She said that congrats were in order as i had essentially achieved my target weight. I was floored.... For two reasons. Firstly the obvious one. I had attained a target! like whoah! Then I had a rush of sympathy for the old me. At one point I genuinely felt that getting to this weight was a stratospheric target.... high high in the sky and possibly unattainable. I thought that 220lb was a realistic expectation for me. Even when asked a lofty pie in the sky question I was unable to even imagine that I plus surgery could achieve normal healthy BMI. My response was a genuine and true..... "but, but, I feel like I've only just started??" She then said that they get that a lot. My revised (official) target is now 76kg or 167lbs and in line with what I've had here on bariatric pal since September/October. She said that I'm 2/3 of the way now, so still a little bit to go. My response to that was a jovial yet deadly serious "Sure, no bother to me". On a more serious note I am so delighted with the changes in my head. Much more so than the body changes. The body is great don't get me wrong, but it's upstairs where the real change lives. My identity crisis is throwing up the most lovely of artefacts. The old me would not in a month of sundays let alone in an instant like that be so sure of himself and while I had genuine sympathy for the Des who sat in that far off consultant's office and murmured that he wanted to be 100kg, I couldn't help but smile at how distant I felt from him than at that point. It was literally like Eavann was describing the actions of another person. In other news Oliver my surgeon is delighted with my every progress. He's asked me to get a Vitamin B12 test done but the rest of my blood panel has caused him to wax lyrical about me! Bad cholesterol down, good cholesterol up etc. etc. the list goes on.... Blood pressure is good and still very much in control. All told things are pretty much in fine working order under my proverbial bonnet. So that was my day. Walking on sunshine right now to be honest. Chat to ye again soon. Des x Man on the veritable cusp of non obeseness.
