    What was the deciding factor?

I am in no way a veteran, but I can tell you why I chose it: My band surgeon doesn't do band to sleeve revisions, he too advised me to have the bypass. There is a common belief ( whether it's true or not) that band to sleeve revisions are not as successful and therefore the bypass is recommended. However, my personal reason were I did not want a forces malabsorption syndrome, I had less than 100lbs to lose, and wanted to have kids without all the risks of being a high risk pregnancy. I decided the sleeve was the right choice for me and found a surgeon that supported my decision. I can tell you 110% that I am happy with my decision and felt like it was the right choice for me. You have to decide what is right for you.... Good luck to you! This is a great group!
  2. PKB said: You mentioned..."If that happens, you'll be in the same place as you would be post-revision with an infection." - I'm not sure what you mean? Knee revision or Sleeve revision? What I meant by that is that if you don't have any kind of WLS, you will probably not lose a significant amount of weight, which would lead to another knee replacement in the future. I read your OP as you being worried that an infection from a leak would lead to a knee replacement, so I wondered whether you'd end up having to do the knee replacement whether you had WLS/sleeve or not. My point is that your weight is damaging the knees anyway, so it might be worth the risk to have the sleeve, especially if it helps you take off the weight and allows you to keep the current knee replacements longer than normal. As for finding Tiffykins' leak story, I believe she has parts of it posted in her profile and I know that she has posted extensively about her journey. To use the search function, you need to go to the forums home page, then do the search so that you can search for her posts. There are other band to sleeve revisions who have had some complications, but Tiffykins is the one whose name came to mind first for me. As I said, you definitely want to discuss this risk with your surgeon and your medical posse (stole that term from Eggface, y'all!) to see if the risk/benefit ratio is acceptable to you! Good luck whatever you decide!

    Weights

My doctor let me start back weightlifting at 4 weeks. I had bypass. I had started about 12 weeks before surgery -- worked with a personal trainer -- and got right back into it. I KNOW my results would not have been as great as they've been if I wasn't working out with weights. If you can possibly do it, buy at least a few sessions with a trainer, talk about your goals and have them help you set up a program and teach you proper form.

    Port pain

I would call your doctor and let them know what is going on..how you are feeling..and what they suggest you do.....If it doesnt get better INSIST on being seen..... As I sit here and type this my port is detached and I am awaiting a revision surgery if my insurance appeal goes through.....it was denied and is now in review... I had lots of pulling feelings when moving certain ways...and a burning sensation as well.. VERY early on.....

    Port pain

Hi! I was banded on the 26th and had the exact same thing as you. My doctor assured me it was a stitch used to hold the port pulling on a muscle. It's like when you put your hair in a ponytail, sometimes a stray hair is sitting at an awkward angle and it pulls and hurts, but eventuallu things settle down and find a place. He said it would get better on its own, and it has. So don't get too worried about port revisions and such (I was freaking myself out worrying). It sounds normal. Just take it easy and don't strain the area any more, and it will heal up soon.
  6. wow thats is totally different to my surgery requirements its good though that they are taking extra precautions. Are you going from sleeve to Bypass? good luck with it all
  7. I'm in process of getting approval and trying to decide which one. Would love to hear feedback on why you chose bypass. Thanks.
  8. Has your surgeon told you not to take NSAIDs? One of the reasons people choose the sleeve over the bypass is so they can continue to take them.
  9. Hey all! I'm 3 weeks post op today, from band to sleeve revision. I really did not work on my bad habits of drinking alcohol before surgery. Now at 3 weeks out, I'm feeling great, and I'm dying for a glass of wine. Since I can't have wine, then I'm grabbing a piece of dark choc. If I don't have that I'm reaching for my leftover pain meds. I'm feel like I'm controlling these urges but they are coming on stronger. This is only at night too, that was my nightly routine, after 5, glass of wine. I have a very addictive personality obviously, and I'm worried. I don't want to talk about this to my surgeon bc I already feel like she looks at me as a failure bc of the Lapland. I'm sorry for rambling or if this is even making sense. It's so hard to not fall back into old routines when you start feeling back to normal.
  10. My surgeon is one my ***'s SoCal experts on revisions. He told me that, regardless of revision or virgin, sleevers fall into two categories: Those who follow the rules, "ace" the mushies phase, learn what a bite size is, and a portion size is, and make the transition to solids well. They lose weight well and maintain it. The other group doesn't follow the rules, blows the mushies phase by eating too much, too often, and too quickly, vomit, go back to liquids, and supplement with crunchy carbs and sliders. They do poorly. He stresses follow-up care and education. He's very strict. I am losing quicker than I did with my Band.
  11. I had the gastric bypass august 18th I'm home now I'm gassy and bloated it hard to sleep and the bloat makes it hard to drink liquids. It hurts to lay on my bed even if I try to lay on my side :/

    Hunger torture

I had a revision surgery from sleeve (2012) to gastric bypass Jan 29 2018. I am on a liquid diet until I see my surgeon on the 14th. With the sleeve, I didn’t feel hungry at all after surgery and was barely able to drink. But with this surgery, I am starving!!! It’s such torture cooking for and watching my fiancé and kids eating and not being able to have anything but liquids. It’s been such an emotional battle for me and I find myself literally crying over it. Am I the only one or has anyone else gone through this? Thanks!

    Wendys chili

It was highly recommended to me by my doctor, nutritionist, and other bypass patients but I got it yesterday, puréed it, & ate 1/2 cup last night and 2 hours later had the worst stomach cramps of my life! Took 2 Gas- X & it eased off after about 30 mins. Now I'm scared to eat the rest!
  14. Hey guys! I was sleeved in July of 2011. Since then, I've had some problems. Once I started on soft foods, I was not able to keep my food down. In September of 2011, I had to have my gallbladder removed. I was still nauseated after every meal, but able to keep the food down...until about January of this year. I recently had an endoscopy and an upper GI with a barium swallow. My tests indicated that I have pretty severe acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. I just got back from the doctor. His recommendation was medicine and time, or some sort of tissue repair surgery. It seems they can't do the typical hernia repair fundoplication because the part of the stomach that was removed is used for that. He said another option is to convert my sleeve to a gastric bypass. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? Also, I am a cash pay patient...should the tissue repair surgery or gastric bypass conversion be covered under the 1 year complication coverage? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
  15. My bmi is 31.7 right now, I am 50 and still have my band. Its comming out the end of October but my surgeon wont bypass me at the same time, i need to wait 2 months before hell bypass me so I hope to have a bmi of at least 30 at bypass surgery date. I am positive I will loose quickly, and so excited and scared.
  16. I just had my revision surgery on 10/5 and my first week I lost 7.7 pounds. My bmi was 37.5.

    Denial part 3

@@Big Opie, your a fighter I love it! Always put that spirit to positive use and don't give up. I saw your other post and I have had reflux and my surgeon wouldn't do the sleeve and instead did the bypass. I know it's something else to add but you don't want to go through an additional surgery. I wish you the best of everything.
  18. Everyone's body is different and your mileage may certainly vary. But personal experience is the herald of all sorts of pseudoscience. I think the data is worth considering, because my personal experience may be wildly misinterpreted, as is so often the case when I've been shown my body is working differently than I always thought it was. In any case, the people in these studies are having all sorts of success (with less complication revision surgeries) and still eating and drinking fine. And their scans show the food exiting the stomach no slower than the control group.
  19. I had my sleeve on 5/21/12. I've lost 128 pounds to date. I have very bad GERD and the worst part is esophageal spasms. They are taking over my life! They are so painful and they feel like a heart attack. I've been having them daily and usually wake up around 4 am with this terrible pain in my ears, then throat, chest, and right side where my sleeve is. These things will throw you down on your knees they hurt so bad. I'm on Levsin that I put under my tongue when they happen to help relieve them. I've never experience anything like this. My surgeon thinks they could be caused from GERD. I'm not so sure. I was scheduled for a Bravo Capsule endoscope on Monday and a Manometry on Wed and I've decided to back out of both. I've read where the capsule can damage the esophagus and could get lodged in the intestines when it falls off the esophagus in 7 days if you're lucky. Sometimes it doesn't fall off and there it is stuck and causing more problems. I just can't take the chance, I know I have GERD and all this test does is measure how much acid I have in my stomach over a 24 hour period. Nahhh I think I will just not do it. I'm tired . Sick and tired of these test!!! I'm more sick of the spasms that feel like labor pains and then leave me drained and sore. Well, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. The surgeon wants to revise me to RNY but I absolutely do not want to do it. I guess I will take my chances and see if something else can be done. I know that gastroenterologist will use botox to stop the spasms but I'm scared to go to someone who isn't familiar with the sleeve but I'm not trusting my surgeon either right now. He is so busy and he just heards people in and out like cattle. Ok, well if anyone has had experience with these horrid things, please respond! Thank you!
  20. I'm in the same boat. I am over two months out from revision, and down 19 lbs from surgery day. 202 down to 183. But I must say that I notice so much with that 19 pounds lost. Bones I have not seen in decades. I was 18 years old the last time I was in the 180's (I'm 40 now). Also many people have commented on my shrinking, and every time my husband hugs me he says "You are so skinny!" Gotta love that. When I went from 255 down to 215, 40 pounds, no one really noticed. When I hit 205, a few people asked and were shocked I had lost 50 lbs. It was like, really?? Then looking me up and down to see where. But now, losing this 19, I am getting comments like "wow you have lost a lot of weight". We all just have to hang in there! Esmeralda, it's been a month since you posted this thread, how is it going?
  21. I was revised on May 6th at 165 pounds. I lost another 25ish in the first 2 months or so and than stopped.I am happy where I am at but I feel I should be loosing at least a pound or two with the little bit of food I eat.
  22. Hi everyone, I would really welcome your thoughts and experience on this. Following v successful band, unfortunately it had to come out due to erosion and I have piled the weight back on. My sleeve is booked for the 11 th April which I can't wait for but I'm worried that the restriction on the sleeve will not be sufficient as my band was tight. I was 22 stone and got down to 8 st 13 lb, I am now 16 st....... How much food can you actually eat in one sitting? I'm reasonably good at not nibbling and have researched the types of food that I will be eating which are similar to the band. Would love to hear from you and your experiences will help me decide whether I keep the sleeve op or change to the bypass. Thanks , Peachy

    Some more insurance questions

I was about a once a month drinker and it had no bearing on getting approved at all. I believe also, they're looking for abuse of it. I got approved with BMI and GERD as well. Although, I do have to say, I still have some GERD. I am quite upset by this in fact. That was honestly one of the biggest reasons I chose bypass over the sleeve. I'm going to chat with my Dr. again at my 6 month check up about it. I don't eat late at night--I'm obviously not over-eating at all, so I don't understand it at all. But anyway--good luck to getting approved!!!

    VSG revision to Gastric Bypass

Hey all! I will be revised from my sleeve to gastric bypass on July 20th due to a pretty large hiatal hernia as well as gerd.. I have lost about 70 pounds and I am over a year out from the first surgery. I have heard the weight loss is slower the second time around and I am just curious on what the weight loss has been for others in a revision. Would love any feedback on weight loss!
  25. I am 11 days out form bypass surgery. I love my new life already! The only issue I am having is no energy a all. Everything exhausts me! I am on at least 4 oz protein liquid every hour and liquid in between for 2 weeks post op. Anyone else have this problem and what did you do? Thanks!
