  1. Susan.. I would for sure recommend to protein drinks a day one for breakfast and one for lunch.. cut out snacks and for dinner do a no carb meal .. example chicken and brocolior green beans.. you will feel hungry the first few days, but your body will adapt to it.. I lost 14 lbs in less then a month this way.. My doctor did not make me loose weight before surgery but I tell you what it was a plus.. Just stick to it and dont give up hope.. my protein drink of choice was the slim fast low carb.. or atkins advantage.. the only thing between them is the slim fast has more protein and i felt like it held me over longer.. my doctor also said if you still felt hungry after dinner you could have a 3rd protein shake, but i tried to avoid that

    New Here And Question

My insurance (BCBS) required me to loose 5% of my weight before the dr.'s office could send my papers in for approval. I did the "liquid pre-op diet" to loose my required weight. I figured it was a good way to get used to the diet I was gonna have to do later on.
  3. It's important to keep the eyes on the prize...that's what everyone says as you are struggling through liquids, eating food a baby may turn down, forgoing your coworkers bday cake, ignoring adult libations and gooey treats at parties...the list is endless but if you are in the losing stage you are sacrificing a lot to reach your goal. So instead of focusing on what you are missing, giving up, losing out on..... I thought it would be fun to tell you what I have gained since getting to goal. If you are there or if you have something you cannot wait to do, see, experience once you get there ...Please feel free to add to my list... I love wearing jeans... I love it better that they are a size 8....Who knew they are so comfy when they aren't digging into your skin? I love that there is always a strong selection of smalls on the sale rack and in consignment stores I love not having to eyeball a chair wondering if it will hold me I love being in my queen size bed and realizing in fact we don't need a king like we once thought. I love fitting in the bathtub comfortably I love knowing I don't have to worry about who will sit next to me in a plane, train, bus... I am smaller enough.... I love not sweating when I put out the trash or walk up ten steps I love not to have to worry if "this makes me look fat" I love that I have not one but 2 pairs of whit capris and pants... Yup I said white..... Lol I love that my BP is normal. What do you or what do you think you will love about making it to goal?
  4. Hi!! Very different experiences we are having. The psychologist is part of the weight loss surgery team. I filled out a 370 question form and then had a very dynamic conversation about all aspects of my life. The surgeon said to loose 15-20 lbs for surgery. I am cool with the day before being all liquids. I can't imagine if I met the 20 lbs requirement why I would need to do a crazy pre op diet. It does not make sense to do a pre pre op and pre op. The nut said a lot of people get nervous about having to loose this weight prior to surgery. Time will tell!! Sounds like I should prepare myself either way!! Thank you replying!! Have a good Sunday!! Sannah Sent from my iPhone using VST
  5. Whenever I got that scared to death feeling, I would remind myself of all the reasons that I decided to do the surgery in the first place and that always calmed me down. Scary surgery that will potentially offer me a month or so of discomfort vs. health issues, a life time of struggling, being uncomfortable in my own skin, etc.... and suddenly was back on track that scary surgery was just that. And sometimes, we have to face our fears to get to the good stuff. If you're sure that you've made the right decision and weighed the pros and cons and still come back to surgery, just try to think about life 6 months after surgery and how great you're going to be!

The "No" is for novel, but you can write memoir or creative nonfiction. The definitions are really loose.

    Tattoos!

I'd be curious to know too as I also have a lot of tattoos. I figure I can always get them touched up/added to/covered up if they look too weird/bad after I lose weight. But yeah, I've been thinking about investing in some kind of skin firming lotion to use as I lose weight, but I still need to look into that (I know strivectin works really well but it's *really* pricey, I know vitamin e is supposed to work too, but I don't know)

    Ahhh Sooo Nervous

My op date is the 12th of August. I'm Irish too, I live up north, and I smoke too lol. I'm on my pre op diet and yes it is SO flipping hard and I had to stop smoking, but all I can tell you is the thing that keeps me going is the thought of me not being fat anymore! I'm just so excited to loose weight and I would do anything to loose it, so of I have to stop smoking for a few weeks and diet then il do it to try be healthier. Il probably smoke again after my op though lol. But just think of how good your going to look. And remember how dangerous it is for you if you don't quit smoking! Just try have one smoke a week but 2 weeks before your op you need to seriously not have any. Best of luck! Btw who are you getting your surgery with?

    Body Piercing-Surgery Question

In the case of rings that WON'T come off, we are able to tape it to your finger so it doesn't cause a burn. With any jewelry that remains on your body, there is a risk of burn, so it's safer to just remove it. As soon as you are awake enough to put it back in, you can. I've seen patients put piercings back in as soon as they opened their eyes. Plastic spacers are not a risk for burn, but can still be ripped out of the skin by accident, so it's safer for EVERYONE to just remove it.

    Tummy tuck last week

I am looking forward to having a tummy tuck next year. What a relief it will be to not have to arrange my loose skin under my clothes. I've discussed it with a surgeon here in Northern California, but lately I've been considering going to Mexico. I keep reading on this site about people's positive experiences at Mexican surgical facilities.

    Surgery Date Scheduled

Oh, and pack light! Everyone else brought way too much stuff that they never used. I brought a cloth totebag with a shoulder strap packed with basic essentials - nothing more. Sorry for busting my friend's chops, but Francesca brought 6 nightgowns and never wore one (sorry Fran, all in fun here.) People brought laptops, books, magazines, extra shoes, several outfits but never used anything. TV and socializing was all we had the enthusiasm for. Everyone wheeled luggage around while I had a simple bag thrown over my shoulder. However, I was the only one that went alone while they all had family to help with luggage. But really, it's only a couple days, so do yourself a favor and bring just the basics. I brough moisturizer but left all my makeup and jewelry at home. I did bring a bottle of Gatorade, which came in handy. I lugged around my own water but the hospital had bottled water so I could have left it behind. You'll live in a hospital gown while there, so you can wear the same outfit to and from. Something loose & comfy, nothing binding. I started sipping Gatorade the minute I was brought back to my room because I was really nausious and wanted to start flushing the anesthesia & drugs from my system ASAP. I never vomited while others did - maybe the Gato helped?
  12. Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum and desperitly need to loose weight. I have been overweight most of my life and am at my heaviest now. I need to loose at least 125 pounds... I have tried many differant types of weight loss including having my jaw wired shut at one time =( I deal with a neurological injury and have had multiple surgerys... I take multiple medications including pain meds that can't be crushed. My question is... Would my medical history and medications prevent me from having the lap band surgery? I know I need to have a consult with a lap band doctor but I thought I would ask your oppinion first. Thanks again, Dawn

  15. Hello Everyone, I was on here about 2 years ago working on my process for submitting for pre-approval with my insurance company. At that time I was 216, 5'5' and told by my Dr. to gain a little weight and the only co-morbid condition I had was slightly elevated high cholestrol. Well the office staff would not submit for preapproval stating they wouldn't approve me because of that and that a sleep apnea test would charge me out of pocket. I had did all my other appts dieatician, physchitrist appts etc. Well now after 2 years of busting my butt again on diets to get this off with only loosing 12lbs this past year just to gain 36lbs now at my high of 240 (275 pregancy weights) I am DONE!! I've called the insurance company last night they did say that cholestrol would count as one and not to mention they cover the sleep apnea test at 100% so thanks to the office staff that gave me incorrect info just because she didn't want to do her job 2 years ago. So I am now on the journey again and have to redo ALL my pre evals because it's to old. Hopefully it works this time. The only thing I don't have this time is my DR. structure diet time, which I am hoping I don't have to go thru 6mths of that before I can submit it. I have my initial appointment scheduled on Aug. 28--hope all goes well. One question for any of you out there that may have the DC/MD plan BCBS....what co-morbidies did you have to get approved? How many tries? Also, I never marked me as being depressed before and have never been treated as such, but this weight as really taken a toll on me lately, should I mark that as a problem on my medical sheet as a problem of my weight or would that just cause problems for me to get approved and cause more phys. appts? Thanks Jen

I can't use anything that has a smell so generic Aveno is what I use. I notice my skin looks and feels better if I used it right after my shower.
  17. Hi everyone! Im a sleever who achieved goal weight 9 months post op. Im currently under goal but would like to loose another 10lbs.. but thats not the point of this post! Love to hear from anyone who has ran a marathon, im aiming for a 4 hour goal time and currently running 5 days a week and increasing distance by 10%. No injuries yet (except my currently broken wrist from my downhill mountainbike hobby!). Im a plant based runner who is more or less a veggie. I do not eat processed foods - and by processed i mean food with anything on the label that is not an actual food. No ****. I live in New Zealand, so thankfully we eat very differently here and this has been easy. Any tips from experienced runners very welcome. I have an excellent baseline of fitness as I've been running since 6 weeks post op and credit it with my success.

    10% Body Fat!

Can you ask your doctor for help with this. I was fortunate enough that I did not have to loose any weight before suregery. I only had to eat light the day before surgery. I would ask your doctor for guidance or see a nutritionist.

    Started exercising again

Julie, I reached goal in July 2006 and only began to really exercise 7 weeks ago. I am with a trainer and I had no clue how out of shape I was. I walked my dog everyday and when I began exercising, I wondered where did those muscles go while walking the dog. I think I was stronger heavier than I am now but you know what? You will begin to get stronger and stronger each and every day. The tread mill is excellent for weight lose. You should do that 5 days a week if you do nothing else. If you are going to lift any weights, I go to the gym 3 days a week and work with the trainer for 1/2 hour and then at home I use my tread mill 3 times a week for 1/2 hour. I have become addicted because I feel SOOOOOOOOOO good. I even quit smoking over two months ago. When I started at the gym I weighed 136 and I am now 142 and my clothes are fitting the same so it better be muscle weight that I am gaining because I am not eating anymore than normal. My first month I lost almost 5 inches but because of the excess skin it is hard to measure my fat percentage. I feel incredible and wished I would have done this while I was losing weight maybe I would have had less skin. Keep up the good work. Josephine Surgery 11/10/05 251/142 At Goal 7/06
  20. Im 3 weeks Post Op & the surgeon did a biopsy on my liver during the surgery as well. Determined that I have a fatty liver. Apparently it's very common for individuals who are overweight. Took 1 week for benign results. But he did refer me to a specialist as a precaution. Most cases of fatty liver are resolved when we start loosing weight & keeping it off.
  21. I'm done with all neccessary appointments that was required by my insurance but my surgeon wants me to loose 15 pounds before she even submits it to my insurance. My last weigh in I was 277 on this past monday and today I weighed in at 268. I'm just ready to get this over with because it's getting frustrating and my blood pressure is high often...need some encouragement!!!!
  22. So after reading so many posts I decided to post my fears and the things I don't fear. I fear that I will lose to much. I am tall. I like having some meat. Just not the amount that I have now. I don't want to be skinny. I would love to be a size 14. I have been there before, and I was super happy. Now that I am a 22, I refuse to take pictures. I still see myself as a size 14. This girl at size 22 is not me. I am a super model. I just seriously seriously seriously do not want to be super skinny! Is it possible to lose so much that you could be super skinny? My surgery is on May 19th. I am scared that I am going to die. I am scared my skin is going to look terrible. I am scared I am going to get sick and then die. I am scared that Sally Field is going to have me on a commerical talking about donations for the hungry children of the world. I seriously know that isn't funny but I can see my ribs and I feel that I will just look sickly. I also don't want to weigh myself. I honestly don't care. I just want to wear a size 14 again. I saved all my clothes over the past six years. Boxes full of sizes 14, 16, 18, 20 and now I am a 22. Is it wrong if someone asks me how much weight I have lost that I say... I don't know! I don't want to know. I don't even want to know my starting weight. I have asked the doctors/nurses not to tell me. I just want to fit on a roller coaster again. I don't want to have to squeeze into the seats at KA in Las Vegas. I just want to be flirted with again. I want to not think about breaking something if I sit on it. Whatever weight will give me all of these things I will take it. What are your thoughts on what I have said and what your fears are or were?

How Do You Deal With Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is what put me in touch with the lapband. I still find myself having a moment. It is not as bad and I believe the more weight I loose it will become my past....Everyday I try to stay focused on me being better and not my problem....I'm trying to adopt the old saying..No one will help you, if you can't help youself!!!!!. That even include weightloss! We all are Superstars!*

    Alcohol and banding

Good Luck with your surgery Homecare! I was banded 5-08, and at about 100 lbs less now. It has been the best thing I ever did for myself. I am not much of a drinker, but our Dr has us on no more than 30 carbs for a day and I know that wine has quite a few carbs, so you will have to really watch that and choose wines that are less carbs or you will have trouble loosing the weight. You can have a wine spritzer, lower carb wine with diet sprite. It is very good, or another low carb drink is vodka mixed with Crystal lite soft drink mix, it has no carbs at all. So just be sure to read labels and research all your choices so you will be successful in your weight loss. I wish you the best of luck !!!!
  25. Hi all, I met with the nutritionist for my surgeon yesterday, and was told that Clear liquids were only the day of the surgery, pureed foods (not sure if this would be blended or mushies?) were days 2 - 14, and starting solid foods after two weeks; That seems quite different from what I have read others doing; am I misunderstanding, have things changed, or is this unusual? Thanks, Dragon At first Eustace thought it would be a simple task as he easily and painlessly scraped and shed his dragon skin. But soon he discovers that a new one has quickly taken its place. That’s when Aslan graciously offers to take the scales off for him. Thought it is a painful process, the end result is the healing, restoration, and transformation of Eustace into a completely different person.
