    learning the ins and outs

23# in a month! that's amazing!! When you said the weight would come off slower, I was thinking maybe 5-10#, That's great. I went today to fill out my paperwork just to get an appt w/ the dr. in my area. I go there on 5/21/07. NOT SOON ENOUGH!!! But w/ the request that IF there is a cancellation that I be called immediately - YEAH, right!! Anyway, the first hurdle is over. From what I understand, they wont give you an appt if your insurance is questionable. Evidentally mine is pretty good.:clap2:
  3. Finally, someone else from my state! Hi there! I have BCBSND as well, and I was told that they take 10-14 days to come back with a decision. The wait was definitely difficult - obsessively checking the mailbox and jumping every time the phone rang. Mine was submitted on Dec 21, and I received my approval letter in the mail on Jan 11, but it was dated Jan 7 (I never called to see if it was actually approved before this). Mine took an extra few days due to the holidays I'm sure. I called by surgeon's office minutes after having the letter in hand and they gave me a choice surgery dates. Of course I chose the soonest! Best of luck to you. The wait will be sooooo worth it when that letter arrives!
  4. Congrats on your new journey! I was banded 10/5/12 I've lost 45 lbs since sept 28. I'm 5'7 and started out at 275.6.. Worse part by far is the gas they pump in you abdomin during surgery. Is a very uncomfortable feeling during recovery and lasts a few days. Heating pads and walking help so be prepared! GasX helps for the intestinal gases. Keep us posted!

    Hi all Im sad

Dont cry, please. This is the time for healing, not for losing weight. I know how hard it is to be patient. I am in the same place you are, I came out of surgery hungry, always hungry. I started walking a mile and a half, well not all at once, but I upped my distance until I got there and would like to do it twice a day, except its too blasted hot here, so Im frustrated too. I cant cut down on my eating and snacking so I had to up the exercise to keep losing anything, and I havent lost as much as you have, even counting what I lost pre surgery. I dont get a fill until august 16th, and from what I hear I probably still wouldnt have any restriction. They say it will be probably my 3rd fill before most feel enough restriction that it stops them from being so hungry. 3rd fill??!! So, even if you had gotten a fill last Thursday, you more than likely still would be just as hungry. Another trick is to concentrate on short term goals, 10 lb intervals, 20 at the most as a longer term goal. Any longer than that you will get too discouraged. You cant say well I need to lose 100 lbs, because then you will think you will never be able to get there and give up. Im right there with ya. hugs. My worst time is at night when I start grazing. Get a big box of SF popsicles and stick one in your mouth. I still want CANDY lol. We are all in your boots and know just how you feel, its called bandster hell.
  6. Surgery was done yesterday at 10:30. I'm glad it's over with my I'm still in quite a bit of pain. I feel very weak and shaky. I have a morphine PCA pump but when I start moving, i'm hurting pretty bad. I haven't had any gas pains at all though. Just sharp pain but even that is going away slowly. I'm so glad I did this. This is the beginning of my new life!

    5 Reasons

thanks for the question. i am 6 days post op and thinking of what you said has allowed me to kind of solidify in my mind that i feel i made the right choice. i can give you more than 5. 1. i felt that by pass was too invasive. 2. hospital stay and time out of work simply too long for my schedule (i have a 5 year old and work and have my own business) 3. while i want to lose weight, like the other poster, i don't want to lose it too quickly. gall stones is a concern after either procedure but it is my understanding that what really causes gallstones is rapid weight loss and the band loss is more gradual 4. being more gradual there is a better chance for my skin to pull tight rather than sag and i don't just want to be thin, i want my body to look healthy. 5. i didn't want to worry about mal absorption, thinning hair 6. once i heard about dumping syndrome i knew it wasn't for me. i don't think i can go the rest of my life without EVER having ANYTHING with sugar in it (i can't stand artificial sweetners) and the thought of dumping scared me. 7. yes with lap band there is PBing which i haven't experienced and i know how awful it is, but i felt that it might be the lesser of 2 evils (we'll see after my first experience with it) 8. bypassers lose more weight up front but then gain some back. i don't want to continue to yo-yo. 9. knowing that the band is reversable and adjustable. in case of serious illness and i need to focus on my nutritional intake saline can easily be let out to allow for more calorie consumption. 10. if i start gaining in the future i can always have the band tightened again for continued results 11. complication rate/infection rate is lower with band i think i could go on and come up with even more. i would join a bypass group and ask the same questions to them. i would be curious to hear their answers. i will tell you that my brother's girlfriend who is 27 and lost 115 lbs on the band told me some of the reasons she chose bypass over the band were that she didn't want to have to deal with such close monitoring required for fills (which is another thing i actually like. i like my surgeon to be involved as an additional support person for the rest of my weight loss journey) and she also had acid reflux which her dr. felt would be made worse with the band. please post again and let us know what/if you decide. good luck

    Here I Am

Welcome to the board. You are definitenly among friends and career dieters out here. Please feel free to ask any questions that you have - combined, we have a lot of experience out here & love to support one another. I totally understand your fear of success. The good news is that you don't wake up from the surgery thin. You have time to get used to your changing body and making this a lifelong committment. I admit, it's still strange to catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or doorway & wonder "who is that thin person". But, it's getting easier with time. The best part is feeling "alive" again. No more excuses of being tired and unable to move. I love my new energy level. The pain in my knees has GREATLY reduced and I actually like to feel movement (not that I'm a huge exerciser, but I can run up and down the stairs 10+ times a day and not be winded, go shopping and not need to take a break, etc). Again, welcome!
  9. I was self-pay for my procedure, as my employer had negotiated a total exclusion with UHC for our contract - had my procedure in Mexico with a well-respected surgeon. It always amazes me that I, as a nurse - who spends my life caring for people, can't get the heathcare coverage I need from my employers...but that's another rant. Unknown to me (but known to my ancestors, those cheeky critters!), I had an undiagnosed hereditary blood clotting disorder, and landed back in the hospital at 10 days post op with a HUGE portal vein clot. As far as I know, UHC has covered the one week hospital bill that I incured at that point, with no issues...other than that pesky $2k deductible.

    Scared to death!

One way to minimize the pain is to get your walking in. Walk around 30 minutes each day before surgery and then walk while you are in the hospital post-op. I felt very little pain after the operation. As a matter of fact, I refused any pain medicine after I left the recovery room. My pain level at most was 1 on a scale of 10. But I am an exception. The fact that the surgery was done laparoscopically significantly reduces the pain level after surgery. Walking really alleviates the soreness. Fear of failure is a common fear. Just follow the program requirements and you should do fine.
  11. I'M OBSESSED WITH MY COLLARBONES! I'm just shy of being a month out (I make a month on the 14th). I've lost just about 30 pounds so far. I'm basically on losing a pound a day. My collarbones are now showing! My face has gotten noticeably smaller and I've been getting all of the compliments! My aunt even asked if I photoshopped my face on one of my pictures! Yes, I take that as a compliment. My body in general looks smaller, my breasts are pretty much gone with the wind but my booty is still plump! I guess since it's hereditary! I can fit a medium/large now in pants and shirts. Depends on the material. My legs are smaller, stomach smaller, I'm just so happy. 10 pounds away from the 100s!!!!!!!!! I've been toning my arms and legs and I've been walking at the park and on the treadmill at the gym. My diet now includes grits (but not often), oatmeal, red potatoes, cooked vegetables, canned fruit (light), diet gatorade, green tea, crab grape juice. This weekend I add boiled and scrambled eggs, multigrain crackers, Melba toast. Next week I add baked salmon, canned tuna, stuff to that nature. I've been doing really well, keeping everything down. Only thing I really loathe is those damn Protein shakes! I'm just so tired of them. I'm supposed to be at 60 grams a day and I'm getting at least 30 grams. But today I started drinking on premier Protein shake in the morning, and I'll have one later during the day. I get really really really fast. Like after about 5 small spoonfuls of grits or I can eat about 3 pieces of red potatoes. I'm still having problems not drinking with my meals. food makes me thirsty! That's pretty much it though, I need to start my Calcium Vitamins today also. So that's on my to do list. Well wishes!
  12. Hope, you're lucky..my discharge papers said 2 weeks, but I had to start after about 10 days...couldn't do it anymore...my busy life just couldn't handle not driving!
  13. Hi all! I am newly banded as of 12/30/10 at 8:30 am. I am from south of Houston and have been getting ready for this for over a year. If my original doctor's group or surgeon's office could screw it up any more, I would have been shocked. I almost didn't get things done in time. Gotta say the soreness is more than I anticipated and I have had a few outpatient surgeries. The gas is still stuck in my left shoulder and although I have never had acid indigestion, I have had an awful time of it since being banded. Do any of you have any hints or helpful tricks to overcome the heartburn? Goodness knows I don't want to have any further surgery because of it. Also, I understand I am still swollen, but my bras are really tight right now and very uncomfortable. I really cannot go without when in public as it would be unbecoming. Also, I am noticing the "super glue" doesn't seem to be lasting as long as I would have thought. I mean, nothing is seeping or leaking, but I am a little concerned. I will contact my surgeon, but your collective experience would be helpful. I take an awful lot of meds for various health issues and am wondering if there is anyway to make them taste any better after being ground up? The bitterness is overwhelming. How long will it be before I can quit taking them, do you think? What is your experience? I'm sure I have other questions, but those are all I can think of at the time. Thanks! djmixon

Hey Guys - I'm new to the site also. I was banded on 6/11/08 and have lost an amazing 30 pounds with my pre-op 10 day liquid diet until now. I'm trying to create my profile, but can't figure out how to create a tracking Ticker. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Everyone!!

As mscafe32 stated, I have also lurked on the boards for months, but this is my first post. I started this journey on almost a fluke - I had a friend that sent one of those "16 things people don't know about you) that circulates on facebook...one of her 16 things was regarding her lapband. Prior to that I had never heard of it. As I researched and researched and researched some more, it seemed the tool for me. Not until about 5 days ago did I start wondering otherwise...in hindsight, it was probably the surgery, missing work, etc. that had me nervous, not the procedure itself. With that said, I had my band put in on 7/21/09 - so i am 3 days in at this point. I have found the Clear liquids to be a bit boring, but tomorrow I get to go to full liquids for another 10-14 days. During the time I was researching, I found that most people found the "gas pains" to be the worst, I concur. It is tolerable, but occasionally flares up. I do find more relief with the gas pains by using children's Motrin than with the narcotic subscribed by the doctor. I am still very excited for the potential of this tool. I applaud anyone who is going through this.
  16. Hi, Ryan!!! My name is Patty, and I live outside of Boston. I, too have been overweight since I was a kid, and have lost hundreds of pounds over the years. I got banded on July 1, and have lost about 70 lbs (about 50 pre op since may). It is by far the best decision I have made for myself in years. I wish I did it 10 years ago when I was thinking about it! So listen, you've got a great advantage!! Your youth!!!! seriously, the pounds come off easier, and with the band, they'll stay off.....plus your doing it early before doing too much damage to your heart and body. I applaud you on a great decision to take control of your life at such a young age!!!! The other thing about you being so young, is that you likely wont have many issues with excess skin, etc, as your body will rebound well, and work with your weight loss...if you were 40, yeah, not so much.....just remember when you're feeling up to it to put some exercise in your life...you will need strength training, along with cardio, and I bet your skin will look fantastic!!! Dont sweat the surgery...I didnt have any serious pain except some gas pain in my shoulder, and I was up walking that afternoon.....some pain in my port, but thats mostly due to my kids. I have 3 yr old triplets and my youngest has cerebral palsy, so I have no choice but to do some lifting.... so listen to your doctor and follow your pre op and post of diet. I use the EAS shakes (you can find them at Wal mart pretty cheap) and I use Protein powder as well (look for about 25 grams per scoop and as low carb as you can get...I get that from wal mart too) The eas shakes are really high in protein compared to the instant Breakfast and slim fast, and you dont need the carbs anyway... would love to keep in touch....give me a shout if you have any questions!! take care!!!
  17. Ever since my sleeve on 10/17/11, I get really nauseous and feel like I might throw up (and sometimes get diarrhea) if I take any of my meds within the first half of the day. Did this happen to any of you and was/is it forever or can I expect this problem to go away eventually? Seems like my sleeve gets "looser" as the day / evening wears on. Does that sound familiar at all? Also, ANY extended release meds at ANY time of day or night make me really ill. Can you offer some insight? Thanks in advance!

    The Cigna Saga Continues...

i was approved on day 19. tgey kept telling me approved and my surgeon it was pending still. but finally the surgeon was faxed my approval. Surgery is August 21st
  19. I understand what you are going thru. I have smoke for 34 years and it is hard to just quit. But I called on the help of my doctor which she gave me Wellbutrin and it has help alot. I have not smoked in 10 weeks. With that said I looked up everything I could on the computer and the trace of nicotine is gone within 48 hours. I'm not sure how they test or what they are testing for but for myself I did not what to take a chance. I was told also I could not smoke within 2 months of surgery. I go 4/21 for my pre op. But I think you you will be okay. Good Luck
  20. I've been lurking, then posting a bit, for a few weeks now, so I figured it was time for an official introduction. I'm MLK, female, 51 years old, 5'2", scheduled to be sleeved on March 17. My mom put me on my first diet when I was not quite 9 years old, and I've been fighting my weight ever since. Thought I was fat all through high school and college (although the photos certainly prove me wrong), then after my son was born 23 years ago I gained a ton of weight and spent most of my 30s hovering around 190, which on me was HUGE. Dieted down to 125 after I got divorced in my mid-30s, kept it off pretty well for almost 10 years doing 10-15 hours of martial arts per week. Remarried, quit smoking, gained back up to 150 or so, have been yo-yo-ing between 145-175 for the past five years. Oh -- had abdominal liposuction in 1998 which took away my "apple" shape, but I gained back the 10 pounds they sucked out, mostly in my chest and back. Didn't know WLS was even an option for me until I saw somebody talking about having the lap band at a low BMI on the 3 Fat Chicks message board. Did a little research, talked to my PCP, found out about the sleeve and decided that was definitely the surgery for me. Came very close to going to Dr. Aceves since I'm a self-pay, but decided on a surgeon very close to home. Went for my pre-op blood tests, EKG, and chest x-ray last week, so if all goes well I'll be sleeving it up in just over three weeks! This is like a dream come true for me -- I don't think there's been a day in the past 40 years when I haven't obsessed about food and weight. I'm very accomplished in my career, but have always felt "less than" everyone else because of my weight struggles. Really really looking forward to having them in the rearview mirror! Thanks to all for the great info and support on this forum!
  21. Actually I really did hate working out before surgery. I started to like it more when I found a work out buddy, now it is more like hanging out...working out and chatting with a friend. It took me about a month before I started to like the gym at all...but after I realized how good it made me feel after working out I started to like it. And of course it is always awesome to see improvement in the gym as well. For example: When I first started the gym I could only do 5 mins on the elliptical, now I can easily do 30. Or like when I started I couldn't even do the stair master...it was too hard, now I am up to doing 10 mins on it every time I go So those types of things have given me motivation to keep going and to keep on my diet.

3 weeks post op and Stressed

I feel the same way! I'm only 10 days out though. I've been back at work for 3 days and I'm dragging. I'm not hurting at all which seems weird but I am exhausted. Thanks for posting these responses. Maybe we are expecting too much of ourselves too early.
  23. Hi my name is Joanne and I had the LAP-BAND® done on Feb 15 2010, I will go for my first filling next week. My surgeon is Jorge Rabasa. I have lost 10 pounds so far.:blushing:

    Hello from Minnesota !!

:thumbs_up:I'm from Lino Lakes and had my band put on April 10, 2008. I've lost a total of 93 pounds! Well....that was 55 pre surgery and 38 since surgery. I started last November to lose weight and change my bad eating habits and lack of exercise. You are making a GREAT decision! Good luck to you! Just have a positive attitude and you will succeed!! Keep me posted! I'm excited for you! -Dawn :biggrin2:
  25. battleweary

    Hello from South Dakota

I was banded in January of 2007 in Mexico by Dr Kuri. I have been getting fills in Sioux Falls by Dr. Harris, but his clinic is closing. I had lost 43 lbs and kept it off until about 6-7 months ago, and now have gained 10 back. My own fault, I am a stress eater and my job has been awful. Of course with the economy the way it is I certainly have to grin and bear it! My problem is that I began grazing again, and you can't do that with the band. Grazing enables you to consume waaaay too many calories than just eating your meals and a small snack. I too am trying to get my head back on straight and have just joined a fitness club that is across the street from where I work in Watertown. Plan on spending my lunch hours on the treadmill to get moving again. Anyone from my area who would like to get together? Battleweary, for sure. P.S. I am a 57 year old female.
