I go to an excellent Bariatric Center who have 4 Bariatric Surgeons, 2 NUTs on staff, 2 offices in NJ and about a dozen staff workers. None of the surgeons or staff workers have had weight loss surgeries. The surgeons are hands on and get very involved once they have worked on you. They are experienced in their work, even not knowing what an individuall goes through personally, only by what they document per patient. I feel if you are honest with your surgeon, he/she will be honest with you as well. Now I have seen all 4 surgeons and everyone has different personalities. Some are more strict than others (I won't mention names), LOL However, I personally like to see the surgeons who actually performed on me and if I don't I know I am in very very good caring hands. I personally have nothing but good experiences when I visit. The staff is super friendly. The surgeons are attentive and caring and I like they take personal time with you, its not a bum rush office visit. They really want to know everything! Everytime I go I have to fill out an entire sheet of paper of what I eat and how long do I feel satisfied on a meal, how many hours, etc.. They have a reputation to live up to as they strive to be the best Bariatric Center in NJ.....

bandedtigerlily replied to mbomba's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also have tricare prime I just basically said id like to have bariatric surgery for my health and quality of life, I said I was ready to commit to it and understood the decision I was making. I honestly didnt have any issues when I went on base, I just said I want to have bariatric surgery for the reasons I just stated and the doc was like ok lets get things started. Im not saying your doc may be that easy but I couldnt see why they wouldn't put a referral in at your request to better your health. If you have any questions plz ask me ill try and help. I have had lap band surgery already here in Oklahoma on friday I have a revision to also have the plication done... I guess it would be no better of a time for me to write out my journey on here to help others like yourself who have tricare! -

Question about Protein and Water
wannabaloser replied to wannabaloser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I assumed I did if I used water but I didn't want to mess my intake up. I am really not a milk drinker but I will definitely try it with the protein shakes. It seems like it would make them taste better. I am ordering samples of different brands to try and see what I like. I plan on having enough for pre and post op so I can see what I like after surgery before buying a large quantity. Thanks and any other suggests that you have for pre or post of are greatly appreciated!! I am going to Mexico and I am worried about not having a strict diet to go by afterwards. I do best if I am told exactly what to have and how much and when. I am thinking about trying to find a bariatric nutritionist for post op to keep me on track. My insurance does not pay for anything relating to weight loss so I don't know if that would be excluded or not. Ugh! I am just worrying about everything. I have so many lists of what I need, and do's and don'ts from posts I have read on here. I am driving myself crazy thinking about it!! -
Question about Protein and Water
kimbernada replied to wannabaloser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, you can count any liquid as part of your water consumption. You should really make the shakes with milk (skim or light soy) to make sure you are getting in more nutrients, especially during the pre-op diet. It makes the shakes taste better too. Kind of weird, but I switched to light soy milk for my pre-op diet and now, almost 7 months later, I really only like my protein shakes made with it. I can use skim milk, but the shakes taste "off" to me now. (I have a protein shake every morning for breakfast.) Also, I had my "meal" at noon at work because it was so much easier to be able to eat with my team. I'd have a shake for breakfast at 6, a frozen dinner under 300 calories for lunch at 11, a shake at 2 pm, and a shake for supper. I was able to have unlimited veggies too. I suppose it also helped that my hubby went to visit his parents for a week during that first week of the pre-op diet. It made it SO much easier for ME because I didn't have to be around his food. I never did feel deprived. The shakes I drank were Bariatric Advantage. Very filling and they kept me satisfied 3-4 hours. -
Getting ready for Pacific Bariatric
annav562 replied to thxkbye's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Omg..I actually am opposite of you..I had health net 3yrs ago and was referred to Pacific bariatric. .went to seminar in October and by December I was told I would be scscheduled for surgery in January. .did everything from pre op classes to all the testing required. .sadly the medical board denied me last minute despite my countless pages and pages of documented attempts to lose weight that spanned almost 10 years...fast forward to last year in April I am back with Kaiser and I was approved for the options program..had surgery 3weeks ago..Pacific bariatric I thought did good in terms of making you informed. .perhsps not as much as Kaiser but maybe things have changed I was under the care of Dr. Suh at the time...I was happy overall in the way things moved smoothly. .but unfortunately like I said getting approved last minute wsd an issue. -
OK... WARNING!!!! I AM GOING TO COMPLAIN!!!!!! I am trying to have a revision from a lap band. My insurance company informed me today, that even though I had good success with my lap band before my supposed slip, that I would have to start the whole bariatric process over. They said that because my initial surgery was in 2009 I needed current proof of bariatric compliance. However, they would accept the last four years of diet documentation because the lap band slip was of no fault to me. Sounds crazy right? I have to attend meetings, take nutrition classes, have another pysch eval, obtain another support letter from my doctor, and go through cardiac clearance. UGH!!!!! Meanwhile, I have an empty lap band, an uncomfortable port, pain while eating, excess gas,and a tingling numbing pain that radiates behind my left shoulder and runs down to my finger tips. I want out of lap band hell! I have to focus on the positive. I am able to get all of the above taken care of before my next appointment in April. (I just have to rearrange my life to do so.) Thanks for listening!

Boiling Inside! Incompetence runneth over! Beware!
heykiddo replied to KeeWee's topic in Rants & Raves
I am so sorry to read your story and I so commiserate with you. My story was no where near the same as far as specifics but similar in that I think a lot of the bariatric surgeons and their staff (people associated with the bariatric practice) treat us as cattle to be fed through the chutes. I think they handle so many more people than a regular surgical practice does that we are just nameless, faceless cattle. As an example, my doctor thought when I went in for my post-op visit that I was there for my pre-op visit. Partially, this is the medical practice anymore, but specifically it is true in this type practice. No wonder you or any of us feel like we are "boiling." Anyone does when they feel they have no power in a situation and that is certainly where you are right now -- no power to effect a change in the situation, no power to effect a change in her and the way she does things, and no power to change the way the doctors do things as you and the rest of us are just one of MANY who will put up with most anything to get the surgery. And, let's not even talk about the insurance companies . . . . . My thoughts are with you and I certainly hope things work out for a quick, positive resolution to this situation. Keep us all posted. -
question for those Who have to do the six month diet before getting approved.
GingerAnn replied to mommydavis0129's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take it you don't have any co-problems like diabetes, thyroid... My understanding is... Depending on your insurance... But I'm right on the line too. My BMI was 40.8 and my dr told me he wanted me to show that I could lose some weight so he said lose 5% which would have been 14 lbs and check back in 6 months.... (Meanwhile I had already lost 74 lbs 2 yrs ago but have put back on 35 lbs-he knows I can do it) so those 14 lbs would have put me under the 40. But he still wrote in his notes that I would be a good candidate. So honestly I don't know if my insurance would still cover me or not. So what I did was go to the Illinois Bariatric Center... I'm not screwing around with my dr. I had my consultation, physical and already saw the dietician. When I weighed in there I weighed a few lbs heavier...a little extra Water weight from fixin to come on my period and left on my gym shoes. I came on at 43%. The sent it off to my insurance and I'm waiting to hear back. Fingers are crossed. All goes as planned I'm tentative for May! -
Physical limits after surgery
tracyhelen replied to HoseDragger's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just keep drinking a lot of water. You might get weak if you skip a meal. You would have to ask the bariatric doctor about the situation. Also, you probably should have a protein bar on you and a bottle of water just in case you do get weak. -

Something helpful to share with you all!
elli'smommy posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good morning everyone! I have gleamed several tips, ideas and overall supportive moments from the support groups I've been attending through St. Vincent Bariatric Center of Excellence where I'll be having my RNY on July 3. Here's one that I thought may be useful to share with you guys as well. So, Im not sure I have the story completely right, but, here's what I think I know. There's a chef named Chef Woody who has a wife whom underwent RNY surgery. Chef Woody became frustrated with making two different meals every time they sat down to eat so he has created healthy, tasty, bariatric friendly meal that everyone in the family can enjoy! He has a website, www.chefwoody.com where you can get ideas and recipes for all sorts of things that fit your place in the journey. I hope this is helpful! Peace, Chris- 8 replies

Question on speeding up the surgery date
Dorian replied to Mia's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You very very lucky in being approved early. When I saw your post, I got excited thinking maybe this could happen to me as well! I called my Bariatric office this morning to see if they would submit my claim early. I was told that they wait the full six months to ensure they have all of the proper and required paperwork that the insurance company is looking for. She explained it to me by saying that the insurance company WANTS to deny every claim so they dont have to pay. If we submit all of the proper information, and PROVE that it is medically necessary, they have a harder time trying to deny. She also said the appeal process can take longer than just completing my last two months. I think there should be NO waiting period for people with severeco-morbidities, such as my extreme spinal stenosis. I have seen TWO spine surgeons that said "yes, you need back surgery, but you must lose a big amount of weight first." I am beyond FRUSTRATED with all of this, including myself. All I want is to be pain free. I thought it was worth a try, but no luck for me! Hope the time goes fast! -
I agree with you,, I am just afraid since she has been at this Hospital since 1981, and is Head of the bariatric unit, that she could make my life living hell while there, or at least not so nice. I have the director of nursing on my side right now, and she seems to be nice, so for now, I will wait. I also want a formal appology from this nurse. I have a pretty good memory so I will be able to account for what happened as well as the emails she sent me etc.. and of course it is on the board..... Thanks for all of y our support this board is sooo awesome....a great bunch of losers-- weight loss ones that is,,, (its a joke-pun)

That moderator is a Nurse and head of the bariatric center in the Hospital.... I talked to the supervisor and we will see what is stated.... What a way to bust my bubble a bit huh.... But Soon I will be in Weight-loserville,,,,,,,,,,,,

I, too am a nurse and I can't imagine the trouble she will be in once her supervisor finds out what she has done. It is a HUGE error for her to do this to you, or anyone--and she should be removed from her position as bariatric coordinator for it. It's a fundamental rule of nursing--no talking about patients, no sharing of information, ever. You weren't even a patient of this doctor for whom she works so she is in direct violation of the HIPPA act and that will get her in HOT water with her employer, not to mention the state board of nursing --to whom she should also be reported for unprofessional behavior. I can't remember the name of the board, but it's part of the "department of professional regulation" in Jacksonville. My uncle and cousin are both MD's at that particular hospital, coincidentally..... Good luck to you and report it NOW--she needs to be roped in tight and fast!

brutallyhonest replied to brutallyhonest's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is all my bariatric advantage shakes prior to surgery... I called my doctor and they didn't recommend I use pre made shakes... why is that????? So basically I can use powder milk ice water plus a fruit... I'm tryin to be very strict and not cheat but I feel like I'm drinking chalk... gotta find another way to like this.... 0_o -
Uh, I'll never look at Lopez again. No way, no how. Billy will be my last option. I'll just show up on Penni's front step acting like my crazy mother, she'll shoot me in the gut, John will call 911, and they'll rush me to the closest bariatric surgeon, who happens to be Billy. Phew, feels good to have that worked out finally.

Aetna approval without 2 year weight history?
momx4goingthedistance posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi - had anyone been approved by Aetna without 2 year weight history showing BMI over 40? I am almost ready to submit but am so afraid of being denied. I have 1 year showing BMI of 36.2 from 2010 and a Jenny Craig paper from 2011 showing 38.3. Any advice is sooo appreciated ! I called the Bariatric nurse at Aetna 4 times over the last 3 months and she said not to worry- she said that since my BMI is 40.4- I should be approved with no problem . Is she lying? -
Hello All, I've been a lurker on these boards for awhile now and found them very informative.I decided I really wanted to do the Lap Band procedure so I contacted my PCP who refered me to a Bariatric surgeon,Dr. Loggins in Lewiston ,Maine.I waited nearly 3 months to get in and had my consultation today. Now I'm feeling depressed and wondering if I should move forward with the pre-op requirements. The consultation started with me watching a 20 minute video all about Gastric Bypass.Nothing was mentioned about Lap Band at all. After the video the Nurse Practitioner who set up the video came back in the room and asked if the video had answered any questions I might have.I told her no actually it didn't since I did not want Gastric Bypass. She kind of blew it off and said that all new patients see the that video and that I could discuss the Lap Band option with Dr.Loggins but since the pre-op requirements were the same for both she was going to set me up for Nutriton classes,a psych evaluation, etc. Then she went through my health history and gave me a physical exam. Then Dr.Loggins came in and spent about 30 minutes trying to convince me that Gastric Bypass was a better option and threw all kinds of figures and percentages at me.I argued,I got frustrated and then the tears came. The tears must have finally softened him because then he said he would compromise. He said he will not do a Lap band on anyone with a BMI over 50.I am at 53.If I can get my BMI under 50 he will do the procedure. But he still went ahead and orderd all the pre-op testing. So now I'm wondering if this is normal.Do lap band surgeries really not help people with BMI's over 50? He was so anti Lap band and pro Gastric Bypass.Should I try and find another surgeon? It took me so long to get into see him.I'm feeling more confused and depressed than ever! The only thing I am sure of is that I DO NOT want Gastric Bypass. Thoughts?

@@GigiLane I am in Tampa. I am almost at the end of my 6 month visit before I am approved by my insurance for the surgery. I opted to go directly with the bariatric surgeon as I thought it would be easier to eliminate the middle man (pcp) If all goes well should have my surgery by end of June. Good luck to you and your journey! Sent from my SM-N920T using the BariatricPal App
