  1. I'm new to this too and I'm so glad you asked this question...I bought a multi-vitamin made by opurity that's labeled bypass and sleeve optimized multivitamin, I wonder if I'm gonna need other supplements too. Susan

    Hi All you Boston People!!

Hi I'm going to be having my VSG surgery at Newton Wellesley. So far I'm thrilled with their WLS program. We are targeting surgery for the first week in April. I'll find out definitely at my next appt. Newton Wellesly does more Gastric Bypasses than VSG - so I'm a little nervous about that, but like I said, so far I'm really impressed. Anybody have any experience with Newton Wellesley?
  3. When I started researching on why I might be having problems with my band I came across Dr. R.'s site and it listed hundreds of issues that people had with the band so it made me feel like maybe I screwed up because I got the band. Now I realize he was just trying to sell himself. I then found this forum and have learned that a lot of it has to do with my restriction and what I'm eating/not eating etc... So I'm happy I got the band because I still think the other is more drastic and scary to me even though my 19 year old is having gastric bypass surgery next month. Of course I worry like hell for her but it's her decision and she's researched it and seems to be happy with her choice and her surgeon. So all we do is support each other.:smile2:
  4. On 1/28 I had revision surgery going from VSG to a bypass due to feeling like I did not reach the goal that I wanted and was actually starting to regain. I am 13 days post op and feel no restriction. I mean none. When I first had the vsg surgery I felt restriction immediately even during the liquid phase but now it’s so different. I’ve even tried some solids maybe to see if I’m over reacting but still nothing. Anyone else has been through this ? I’m starting to worry.

    Reflux Question

I know a couple of people who had the gastric bypass due to them having reflux problem. And they said it went away. Some people actually do have reflux issues after having the sleeve. Just my experience.
  6. I am almost in my 6th month of post surgery for the bypass. I have noticed that my bowel movements have changed a lot since before the surgery. I used to be constipated all the time. Now I barely eat anything, and I have to go. Sometimes even in the morning when I haven't eaten anything I have to go. Has this happened to anyone? It is to the point where I can't even leave my house, because I am afraid I am going to have an accident.

    Confused

My best friend, who had the original bypass surgery years ago, told me that she knew of 2 individuals who had been banded, and both of them had over time opted to have their bands removed...she did not know why, but she told me because she wanted me to be aware...I thanked her, continued to do my research and decided that the band would be the only type of WLS I would feel comfortable with. I've never regretted my decision, and I've never looked back. You also should do your own research, ask questions, attend an information session at a local clinic, and make your own informed decision based on what you believe to be the best choice for you. As you have no doubt read...this band highly self empowering weight loss tool...you will determine your level of success with your weight loss by the decisions and choices you make every day to comply with your diet and to adopt a healthier lifestyle which includes healthy eating and exercise. You likely won't be able to reach your goal weight without making the effort get there. Friends mean well...but they are not you. They can't see the "world view" that you do...and experiences that you have. You likely also are aware of the high risks for the negative effects of not loosing your excess weight. I encourage you to do your "homework", ask questions, and you will know what the right choice will be when you are ready to move forward. It needs to be your decision... Best wishes as you consider your options...
  8. Hi! About 12 years ago I had the lap band. I started at about 280 lbs and got down to 200 lbs but now I’m back to about 240 lbs (I should be around 140 lbs). I have terrible reflux, morning bile in my throat, and vomiting multiple times a week. I found a great revision doctor and he has approved me for revision to gastric bypass. I’m going in on 4/23 to make sure my band has slipped so that insurance pays. But regardless (I will self pay at this point- even if I have to sell plasma), I’m having the bypass and I’m so excited. Any one out there that can give me some good advice? What to expect? I appreciate any guidance!! Thank you so much! 💜

    Decrease Med Doses??

Actually the absorption rate isn't quicker because the food still travels the exact same path through the stomach and intestines as it did before surgery. It's Gastric Bypass patients that have the absorption issues because the intestines have been re-routed. Not Lap-Band patients.

    Thread Removed? Re:septic

Yes, the scar tissue heals over the staples and becomes a sealed unit again. The vertical sleeve gastrectomy, as I understand, doesn't even HAVE ten year stats as a stand alone procedure, so maybe this was referring to something else? Besides....worst case scenario, something happens to your sleeve, or God forbid you get stomach cancer, or whatever, whatever.....they convert you to a bypass.
  11. It's my understanding that the sleeve removes a protion of your stomach and the gastric bypass they make your stomach smaller and reroute your intestines somehow ... I'm sure someone will explain it much better than me.:001_rolleyes:
  12. Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that my surgery was on Monday August 3rd. I'm 6 days post op and I'm really doing well. There were no complications and I'm drinking my Water like a Pro! I also get mushies but very very tiny amounts. I asked the doctor if I could have my Lap Band once he removed it since I had bought and paid for it, but due to Govt. Regulations he had to destroy the band. Hope your all doing well. Lisa B
  13. I live in Hickory also! My insurance just started covering the LapBand January of this year. So, I decided immediately to have the surgery. They've covered Gastric Bypass for some time now. But, I have 2 children and have been too scared of the possible complications involved with the Gastric Bypass. I recently attended the WLS Seminar at CMC-Mercy in Charlotte. I think they're the closest ones that actually take my insurance. But, I'd drive God knows how far to have this surgery! How long from when you first started this process did it take to get your surgery date?
  14. With the fact that you have gerd the dr should be able to get approval for the revision I have only had the Vsg and preparing to revise to bypass. Gerd is my issue as well.
  15. I was never sleeved but only had bypass. My hunger has decreased and am not thinking about food all the time. I eat 3 meals and 1 or 2 snacks. Also, my tastes have changed from liking creamy fat filled foods and starches to liking more acidic or juicy type foods (think tomato soup, salad, fruit). So it was a definite win in my mind. 16. I was sleeved in July 17 I started at 148.8 kg today I weigh 108.3kg so a respectable weight loss not the best not the worst. I'm definitely glad beyond words that I was sleeved BUT I'm always so hungry like when you're pregnant and you NEED food. It doesn't take much to satisfy me but my life revolves around food. I had hoped for a different outcome. I am thinking about a bypass now and feel like I should have gone straight for a bypass in the first place but I didn't so here I am. Any opinions or advice? Has anyone else revised a sleeve with a bypass? Does hunger improve? Best wishes to all on their bariatric journey it is not an easy choice and I have so much respect for anyone out there making these choices to save their lives. Kindest regards to all Catherine ( Dublin, Ireland) Sent from my Nexus 6P using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. I had RNY gastric bypass just recently. I don’t get the hungry sensation in my stomach ( you know growling and noises ) but my brain tells me to eat eat eat and I just ignore it or drink fluids. It is very much a mental issue, because I am so new to this process. I am measuring my food out and weighing it just to get in the habit of eating less for once I am further out. If I finish it, I finish it and if I don’t I don’t, but after 30 mins I discard it and I don’t drink anything while I eat. I agree with what the post above says in regards to actual hunger and mental hunger. Just do your best and talk your feelings. Remember why you did this in the first place. It is a very difficult journey, but just remind yourself everyday and push through. I hope things get better for you.

    My First Interrogation

My mom and I decided that we didn't want to tell anyone (specifically my grandma) simply because we consider it to be a private thing and not really anyones business (like if I had any other surgery for any other reason). But... the hospital sent me a info packet and for some reason (our mail is really messed up right now) it was forwarded to my grandma's... and of course my grandma "accidentally" opens it and is all like "did you attend a seminar? are you getting surgery? you know bypass is the best because these people had it" blah blah blah. I ended up spending 45 minutes telling her why I was NOT doing the bypass and everything else. So, our "keeping it a secret" lasted for all of a few days lol! I am not too surprised that someone asked straight out. Bariatric surgery in general, especially by-pass, is something that everyone has heard about at some point. Match that with the general lack of brain-to-mouth filters that most people have and well... you get bluntness! Congrats on your weight loss already!! I can't wait to be where you are right now

    Starting the Process

Yea- I tend to do too much homework on everything. When it comes to a major decision like surgery - it makes sense but it is just my personality to research all of my decisions. When I started looking into surgery - I was thinking that I wanted the sleeve as well. The more I learned, and with my other conditions.. Well - feels like each day I switch from leaning to the gastric bypass to the duodenal. Side note- this forum, and YOU, have made my weekend! I found myself today looking forward to jumping online to come here.

Good luck to Feb 1 Surgeries!!

I am new to this board but feel like I'm in the right place! My banding is tomorrow at 8:30am! I am excited but nervous. Had to take a Xanax each day this week just to keep the bad thoughts away. My Dr required absolutely no pre-op diet. I was nervous about that, but found mention of others with similar situations on this forum. I've tried several shakes/protein powders just so I know what to expect. Like most, I've spent years gaining and losing the same 50 lbs. As my 50th Bday approached I decided to finally do something about it. After 4 months of a medically supervised program, Aetna rejected the procedure TWICE! Inexplicably, they reversed prior to a scheduled peer to peer review last November. My starting weight is 245 and I'd like to see 160 as a goal. Not sure if that's even realistic though! My nervousness revolves about post op life. My husband and I own a Liquor store/Deli and catering business. I'm surrounded by food all day-buying it, menu development, product testing. My concern is not wanting to share my surgical choice - it's just not how I'm wired. I've told only family and 2 friends and wish I hadn't told 1 or 2 of those! Sorry to ramble - just looking for some encouragement that I've made the right choice and that in 12 hours some of my anxiety will be resolved.
  21. Hello. I was banded on 9/9/08. If you eat slowly, like 1 bite every minute or two, you shouldn't have a problem. Remember before the band if you sometimes ate real fast, it would feel like it was stuck in your throat (chest area) and you could drink something and it would go down hard? Well, now it might feel that way if you put too big of a mouthful and eat real fast, but you can't drink water to get it down. (if you do, you'll just make it worse) When that happens, just wait patiently for the food to go through. It might be uncomfortable for a few minutes, but it will go down. I used to think that when that happened, it was a signal to me that I was full. It wasn't. I was just eating too fast. If you stick to no more than a half cup of food at a time,(at this stage) you'll know how much is ok. After I started eating solid foods, I found that I could eat anything. Only steak, pork and dry chicken were a problem. I stay away from them now. I eat approx. 1 1/2 cup of food at each meal now. Approx. 1200 or 1300 calories each day. I am losing about 1 lb or 2 lbs a week. I have not had a fill yet because I feel that as long as I am losing steadily each week, then I don't need one. Just remember, you can probably eat almost anything after you are off the pureed food, because you haven't changed the stomach by cutting it like in gastric bypass, you just put a band around the stomach to make it smaller. I am able to eat all of the same things I did before the surgery, only less of them. Don't worry, as time goes on, you will learn by trial and error these things. God bless, Patty

    9 week update

I too hope I have those results...can't wait. My Doctor wants me to get the bypass but I really am wanting the sleeve. He said my reflux would go away with the bypass and it could get worse with the sleeve. We make the final decision Monday. I really don't know what to do. Should I go with what he recommends, or what I really feel comfortable with?

    when to get tummy tuck?

I went through this. I really wanted a tummy tuck about halfway through my weight loss - about November last year. I too thought that if I just lost my tummy, I would be happy with how I looked at that stage. I was convinced that it was the best idea. It was actually Dr Schulman who reminded me that if I lost more weight after the tummy tuck, that I'd likely need even more surgery later because the 'effect' of it wouldn't be as good as if I waited until I was closer to goal. So I waited. I figured at about 7-10 pounds a month weight loss, I'd only have to wait another three months before seeing a PS. So I rescheduled my PS appointment for Jan 09. When I saw him I was 8lbs from goal, instead of 25lbs. He scheduled me for body lift surgery (it's today actually, in about 6 hours!!) and as of today I'm below goal. So I would say that it may be an idea to wait. Even if it's only for 2-3 months. You only have 25lbs left to lose according to your ticker. What's 2-3 months in the scheme of your whole life? And the results will be much better if you wait just a little bit longer.
