  1. My surgery date was July 10 and I have yet to have a true hunger sensation. It's strange but I eat BC I know I need to eat but not BC I'm hungry. However, I do have cravings......however, I try to stay away from them.
  2. I started my journey 10 months ago and I just got my surgery date. The time goes by really fast but I understand how you feel. One thing I recommend is to stay on you doctor. I went to my primary on January 3rd and was told ok we will submit a referral. I waited 4 weeks and was then denied because I needed 6 months of education classes. When I finished my education classes I was told they couldn't refer me because I hadn't done anything else I needed. I said you are the doctor you need to tell me what I need to do! They said I needed an EKG do they did a referral, I waited four weeks for and appointment I went to the cardiologist twice over six weeks and was then told by the primary that I needed a current EKG and I shouldn't have been referred out in the first place. I flipped out! There have been many other delays but I'm sure you get the point. That was two months ago and since then I have called them almost every single day sometimes 3 timed a day. I tracked every piece of paper and every fax that went through that office. The referral girl actually called me twice this past week just to let me know she had taken care of the things she needed to. Friday morning she finally called to say I was approved! My surgeon is Dr Suh and his office is great and are the ones that told me to stay on my primary. Sorry to ramble but hang in there, your time will come quick!

    The 5:2 Diet book FREE

Just butting in here, I LOVE the 5:2, been doing it for 2 months and have broken a VERY long stall/gain spell. Have lost over 10 pounds. But the Vets that are doing it all recommend that people wait until they are out a year before trying it. Follow your docs guidelines. If you can't reach your reasonable goal by 12-18 months, or are having trouble maintaining your goal, or are gaining and cant lose it again... dig right in! After a year or two you really get to see how the sleeve and hunger and such works, and you will be ready to try this if you need it. So far the Vets that are experimenting with this plan really like it. See my stats below for my history if you like.
  4. Well after nearly 2 months of waiting I am going to my first consultation! Have no idea really what to expect. I wonder if he will send me to my other appointments with the psych evaluation and the nutrionist? Or maybe I will have to go to his counseling groups? I know I will have to drop 10% of my body weight before he will do the surgery to weed out the people who are not serious about lifestyle changes. Oh man, I am all a flutter. Next I will be nervous about them denying me insurance. GAH! ::deep breath:: I am just so happy at least this day is here.
  5. What is the pain?? I am just under 3 weeks post op ....I started soft solid food this past Thursday. Up until last Tuesday I was doing great. Tuesday I started having some pain at the incision area.... met with my surgeon & she said it was totally normal healing. However on Friday evening I started getting stomach cramps. I thought maybe I ate too much or too fast or maybe had water too close to a meal. Yesterday (Saturday) I could not eat. I probably got in about 10 ounces of water, a half a cup of chicken broth and a couple sips of a protein shake. Its 4 a.m. on Sunday morning in my stomach really hurts.... it feels like achy painful cramps in my intestines. My stomach is actually growling a little bit but the pain in my intestines makes the thought of eating impossible. What do I do? Is this normal? Will it work itself out? Should I go to drs? I just don't know what to do.... I haven't had a bowel movement since yesterday afternoon around 1 p.m. but I took stuff to clean myself out and do not think it's constipation. I've taken gas-x and pain meds to no avail....has anyone experienced this? HELP!!
  6. Ok, so I have a question.....or more so a scenario that I am going to encounter in a few weeks and wondering how to handle it.... I have an all day business meeting, during which the higher ups will be evaluating me for my next promotion. They Always serve a huge lunch spread during these meetings as they tend to last 7-9 hours. I am going to be on Day 3 of my pre-op Clear liquids. Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone have any ideas for how to skirt the questions of why am I not eating anything? Keep in mind they are truly judging your every move. Do I say I'm having a surgerical procedure and need to be on clear liquids? Or do I just suck it up, serve myself some salad (I can at least be good if I'm going to eat) and then right back on the clear liquids? Dr. Alvarez wants me to do a 14 clear liquid diet prior to my 10/8 surgery....technically my BMI calls for 7 or 14 days...(I'm a 41.4, so 41 calls for 7 day, 42 calls for 14)....should I just start it the day after the meeting, so I don't run the risk of being low on energy and hunger crazy when I am trying my hardest to impress these people for my promotion? That would still give me 10 days on clear liquids pre-op. Truly appreciate any/all suggestions.....
  7. I have a pre-op appointment in about a month and surgery scheduled in about a month and a half. Having this glimmer of hope that something might finally work I've been eating better and doing more walking. I have been so excited about the prospect of finally losing the weight effectively that I've lost almost 10 lbs in the last six weeks. Will losing too much weight pre-op jeopardize my insurance approval (BCBS)? I don't want to gain weight just for the sake of gaining weight, but I know I won't be able to keep it off without the procedure.

    Complete Success!

An EGD is when the doctor goes in with a camera in your mouth, down your esophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine. It is to check that everything is looking good and in good working order prior to having the sleeve done. It's a pretty important test considering a good portion of your stomach will be removed. They put you out completely. The last think you remember is the anesthesiologist putting a ring in your mouth. After that, you wake up in recovery. A procedure that takes literally less than 10 minutes. The anesthesia takes all day to get out of your system, though.

    2 lbs from goal weight

Only you know if you can afford to lose any more weight. According to the tables, the weight range for med frames at 5'7 is 133-144 but that doesn't take into account age and other factors. I am 5'2" and hit my target of 140 at the weekend. That puts me at the top end of the large frame weight for my height - but I look pretty small and am wearing a UK 10/12. People have said to me to stop now but my nut agreed I could lose another 5lbs to be comfortably within the normal BMI range. But he also said to do it 1lb at a time so that I can judge when to stop before I look too thin. However, I also intend to do plastics next year and the surgeon has asked me to give him 4-5lbs to play with. So, the reality is that I intend to now maintain knowing that the other surgery will take care of the last few remaining pounds. Best advice is to talk to your nut and work with him or her. Congratulations, hope those last couple of,pounds melt away!

    2 lbs from goal weight

Careful, you don't switch gears and see yourself smaller then you should be....There is a possibility of us becoming obsessed the other way... Talk to your care giver or your nut and see what they think.....They may say you could lose another 10 lbs. Or maybe they will want you to try to maintain..... By the way...........congratulations on your amazing success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WTG

Going to the doctor as a "normal"

I also saw a new doctor at about 10 months out. She looked at my chart and said well it says here you are obese but your BMI is 24! I explained to her about my surgery and congratulated me and clicked obesity off the list of health concerns on my chart. It felt great!

    Ready For The Journey

I ha e a question for someone who has been through the approval process. My surgeon's office sent in my info last week on 10/04. I got up the courage to call the insurance office this morning and they said they received all the info and that it was up for review. When I got home today there was a letter from the ins. Company saying that they were lacking info. It was dated 10/04. Is this normal? Do u think they are lacking the info like the letter says or is this a formality? Or should I trust the ins. Rep I talked to this morning? Help! I am on pins and needles. I want this so bad!

    AUNT FLOW

I have always been irregular and have gone up to 10 months without Aunt Flow. A couple days after surgery I started spotting and had a light period but not a real one. Doctor said the surgery does play with your hormones. That was the first I had heard about that, lol. Anywho, I had a hietal hernia repaired and I won't lie, it was causing me trouble after surgery. A pain was in my throat from laying down and everything being pulled. A couple days later, the pain went into the left side of my face whenever I laid down. I asked the doctor who said to sleep sitting up. I did and it helped a little but was still intense for a couple days. Before I knew it, it was gone. She said it's common because your pulling. My problem now is the constant feeling of my belly area being sore. I also had to inject Lovenox on the outside of my belly for two weeks after surgery but inside and out is just sore. I was told this could last for a month or longer. Just part of it. Take the good and the bad for lasting results. That's what I keep telling myself.
  20. I just want everyone to know today I received my surgery date which is 10/29/12. I have serveral appointments to make, prep for a 2 week fast and shopping for essentials after surgery. I am excited. I have bcbs insurance and after all paperwork was submitted it only took 3 days for approval. I want everyone who participates in responses and post thier journeys (good or bad) how informative and extremely helpful it has been to me. Truly if you are not a participant in this journey, most people can never understand where we have to go mentally and physically. For you pre and post sleevers I congradulate and honor your presence for truly you are people of courage, insight, preservance and you dared to dream that your lives count! I will be posting various aspects of my journey! I welcome your comments.

    Frustrating Set Back

Too bad, but at least it only sounds like a minor setback. I think being less than a month around Christmas wouldn't actually be a bad thing. I always gained 5-10 pounds around the holidays in the past.
  22. Everyday it gets a little better.. As much as you don't want to do it sometimes walk, walk about 10 to 15 minutes out of every waking hour it really does get that gas moving and out quicker! Discomfort can last about a week make sure your not twisting and bending to much. And it's easier to "roll" when you are getting out of bed. Good luck to you
  23. I am goin in with u at 1:00 pm PST I cannot wait I hve been on protein shakes since 10/15 and wb on protein shakes 2 weeks after surgery. I am excited no worries, I trust God he has our back so I ám confident that everything will b well. I pray for sleevers everyday. God bless all of us, this is best time of our lives, not many people in our situation will hve this opportunity not because they dont hve insurance or money to pay, but because they are not aware of the possibilities embrace the change. You will hve to do the work so what it was VERY hard work to be fat. Lol
  24. Anyone else? Pre-op diet starts this Thursday! I am so nervous and excited! I have three boys (7,5, 10 months) and I'm most scared of a surgical complication. I am looking to lose around 150 pounds. I'm 6'0 tall and have always carried a lot of hidden weight. In 2009-2010 I lost over 100 pounds on my own, but I have gained a little more than half back. So ready to get it off and keep it off!
