  1. I lost 130 lbs since 2009 but after 2 revisions and years of struggle had it removed before yesterday. The band started eroting in my stomach, created a hole which was repaired. YAY! I'm now ready for a new beginning. It'll be so strange not throwing up all the time, no stomach pains or acid reflux. I developed anemia through my journey due to lock of iron. It was difficult to even swallow a pill at times...ANYWAY even after all that I'm still thankful for the lab band, it helped me loose so much weight...I now just have to work hard at maintaining. I'm very excited to start a new healthy chapter of my life. From size 24 to size 2-4 goodluck everybody

    August 2011

Hello all - anyone else having surgery in August ? I'm a revision from the Lap-Band. Well my surgery has been moved to August 1st...have pre-op tomorrow :-)
  3. I think it just shows that the band works for some and not all! I can relate more to people who've had issues with problems with the band more so than people who were successful that's for sure. I don't expect that people won't be successful because I wasn't but in that respect I don't think people should assume that just because they are successful that everyone can be or that it's some kind of character flaw if they're not! I revised to RNY and can honestly say I still experience hunger and hormones still play an issue. When I am hungry I know I should eat, it's my body telling me to do so but with the smaller stomach I can only eat so much so that is why I've been able to have success now that I never had with the band. I'm restricted in ways I couldn't be with the band and need that restriction. I wish all well no matter what procedure they choose but hope they make the right one the first time! Nancy.
  4. Which Dr. at UCLA did your revision surgery? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. It's been four months today since I had band to sleeve revision. After a complicated surgery and a rough recovery I was feeling really good. I've lost 72 pounds, have lots of energy and best of all, I haven't been in any pain. Fibro was a huge part of my life prior to surgery and honestly, after surgery I haven't had any fibro pain. However, the past 10 days have been very reminiscent of the pain I had experienced before. I know I'm walking much more and am more active than I have been in years. Maybe the increased activity is causing a fibro flare up, I don't know. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this?
  6. Hello, I am having my revision surgery on June 12th. The past couple weeks I have been getting stuck more often and have been throwing up more than usual and with more force. I am wondering if I should just do liquids and puréed (things that will not get stuck) until my surgery to prevent things from getting worse in there. There violent throwing up/stuck spells are prob just getting things all inflamed and worse in there.I feel like I am having this surgery just in time but am afraid what the doc will find when he gets in there. I am having my surgery in Mexico with Dr. Jose Rodriguez. He placed my lap band 9 years ago so I figured he would be best to get it out. Do you guys think me sticking with liquid/ pureed food until my surgey is a good idea to give everything time to calm down in there and not cause anymore damage?
  7. My GI doc is at Cedars. I’m scheduled to see someone at UCLA next week to discuss revision.
  8. I'm so sorry. Good luck, I can't imagine having to have 2 surgeries so close together. Will this revision be covered under NHS, without a major wait?
  9. So now once again my Surgery, revision, has been CANCELLED. was postponed for 3/18 to 4/25 now cancelled all together. ;-(
  10. Hey there folks. My name is Will. I'm 35 years old and In 2015 I had the gastric bypass sleeve. I have not lost the weight with that that I wanted to or hoped to. I have contacted a surgeon in my TN area and am going to the pre surgery seminar tomorrow night. Then I have my appt with the head nurse and surgeon on Friday. I'm hoping that he will say I can qualify for the bypass. I'm not happy with my current situation. I'm having stomache pain and discomfort and a lot of diarrhea. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated Thanks Will

    Food addiction concerns

No. Before I even met with the bariatric clinic to inquire about revision I did a two-week liquid diet just to see if I could do it. (It turns out that my clinic doesn't use that technique for liver reduction.) Liquid protein shakes and powders are very filling. They are not like the old "Slender" shakes in a can. I would drink them and ask "Where is the rest ov my lunch?" No, I'm quite satisfied drinking protein shakes, supplemented with broth, sugar-free Jello and sugar-free Popsicles. I won't say it was totally easy, but it was not as hard as I expected and I lost over 10 pounds during those two weeks. Do a practice run. Try it now for about four days just to see how it goes for you.
  13. Most bandsters would disagree with that little theory because I know more bandsters that suffer with horrific non-treatable reflux than I do sleeve patients. I never had acid issues before the sleeve, not even with my band, and I nipped it in the bud around 6 weeks out when I started getting this false hunger, weird twinge in my stomach after I'd eat. My surgeon didn't put patients on a PPI initially either, but as the trend goes more and more people were having issues, and I think his protocol has changed. I think a lot of people don't realize that the biggest issue is that the staple line is healing, and really we don't need hoards of acid bubbling inside our tiny tummies. I was NPO for 22 days post-revision, so my staple line had a long time to heal, plus I was clears for another 17 days, and only had issues once I hit mushies. I'm over 16 months out now and still take my 20mg Prilosec once a day every morning an hour before eating like i have for the last 14 months. I'm not going off of it any time soon either. I like not being hungry, I enjoy not getting reflux, and especially love that I can eat whatever and not worry about heartburn.
  14. I’m sorry to hear you’re having such bad reflux now. I hope all goes well with your revision. Of course I still have to talk to my surgeon but I’m definitely leaning towards bypass. The thought of my reflux getting worse really worries me. And congratulations on your weight loss - it looks like you’re doing great with that part of it. It’s so encouraging to see people’s post-surgery stats.

    When the lights go out

This is exactly why I haven't told anyone but some, not all, family members and a couple of friends. Everyone sees articles and ads for WTS and lately a lot about the band. People have preconceived ideas about what it all means. The most important thing they think is that it is a revision that will keep us from getting hungry and it will keep us from eating the wrong foods. That's understandable. Many of us thought the LB would do just that. Even though we were told that it is a tool, just a tool, not a miracle, it has taken a surprising amount of work. We have to really work at not eating the wrong things. We have to work at keeping exercise in our daily routine. We have to do almost as much to lose the weight as we did before WLS. But you'd never convince them of that so we really shouldn't be surprised that their eyes glaze over and they lose interest when we don't respond, "Jenny Craig" or "Weight Watchers."

    Help!

Tricare is about to start approving the sleeve, and my revision from band to sleeve was covered 100% by Tricare. Our MTF/Hospital here is doing sleeves all the time and they are covered by Tricare as long as you meet the eligibility requirements. BMI, co-morbidities, and so forth. There are several MTF/Military Hospitals across the nation that are performing the sleeve and they are being approved and covered. Don't give up ! ! !
  17. Hi, I'm on my phone so I can't go into great detail but I also have a band and I will be revising to a sleeve plication. My esophagus is dilated and if I have even the tiniest fill I have horrible acid reflux. I researched plication thru YouTube as there are several helpful videos. You can also visit Dr. Ariel Ortiz or Dr. Lopez-Corvala's websites for more helpful information. Dr Cottam and Watkins are in the US and I believe charge around 8-10K for the procedure. Tijuana is about 10K with plication and band removal. If you have insurance they may pay for band removal and then you just pay for the plication. Hope that helps! Good luck to you!!!
  18. I'm another that has bad reflux with the band. Mine started a couple of days after a large fill, and when I called my surgeon (I lived 6+ hours away at the time), she gave me the option of starting proton pump inhibitors for the acid or getting some fill taken out. Since I liked the weight loss, I chose the drugs. I wish I'd done differently. 10 months later, I finally couldn't stand it anymore. For some reason, after I had a tummy tuck and breast lift surgery, the acid got worse. Even with the PPI, I was having to sleep basically sleeping upright and still waking up coughing multiple times a night. My chest/esophagus was aching 24/7. I made an emergency trip and got a partial unfill. The acid is better, but still there. That was almost 3 years ago, and I haven't seen that doctor since. I lost a job, then started a new job and was waiting for my new insurance to kick in (my insurance through my parents which I'd had surgery under, had a $1500 deductible, which I could not afford at the time), then got a different job that took me across the country. I've dragged my feet on getting another surgeon because I didn't want to face the music and admit that I've gained back more than half of what I lost, but I finally bit the bullet and made an appointment for next Monday. I want to get my band checked out. I haven't had any imaging done whatsoever since before my band, so I'm almost certain that I've got a slip and have had one for years. If it is slipped or eroded, I want to revise to a sleeve. I'm sick of the acid, I'm sick of the port pain, I'm sick of not being able to get enough restriction to keep me on track without causing more acid reflux, I'm sick of sometimes not even being able to drink a latte in the morning without sliming and puking.

    are you kidding me????

I think people say things like "you're not that big" because they're trying to be polite. Would you rather have them say, "OMG, it's about time you did somehting, you fatty"? WLS is something that's difficult for people who haven't had a weight problem to understand. They don't know how to react when you tell them you're having it. As you lose weight, people get so used to you having been big that they have a very warped perception of what you should look like, and a skinnier you looks "unhealthy" to them. I thought I might have a port leak and need a revision a few weeks ago, and several people asked "do you even need the band? Aren't you at or close to your goal?" I laughed and told them I needed to lose almost another 30lbs before even being on the upper end of the healthy BMI chart.

    Any seattle sleevers ?

I am in University Place and having my revision May 10th. very nervous but need to do this. I was originally going to use Dr Aceves, but he quoted me $11,000 as I am self-pay. I am instead using Dr Fernando Garcia after a ton of research. I think I am in good hands if Alma is any sign of what to expect. She is very thorough
  22. Get the sleeve. There is NO justifiable reason to get the band. Just marketing and people thinking it is less invasive....it really isn't. Mine worked fine, and then suddenly it was really hard to stay in the sweet spot.....I was just defilled to prepare for sleeve revision, and it turns out my band was leaking.

    So scared with this stricture

Nor did I think it was possible to "revise" from a gastric bypass to a sleeve. Is it?
  25. I have had two weightloss surgeries. First gastric bypass. I had complications so the revised me to a sleeve. Now I have a stricture with scar tissue. They did a dilation yesterday and today I threw up just as usual. I haven't been able to eat solids in 7 months. I've lost 120 pounds, am now underweight, and the backs of my legs have started going numb. Vitamins make me throw up like everything else. Has anyone had stricture dialations and had it work for them? I am so scared this is not going to work for me and they are talking about converting me back to bypass. I can't imagine the idea. Nor can I have a stent as I hear they are very painful and I refuse to go back on narcotics as it was so difficult for me to get off of them after spending four months in the hospital on diladid. I feel like I'm losing hope.
