Lap Band Removed Through Esophagus?
gingersnap replied to gingersnap's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doc is not a big lapband fan as the European studies and current US studies are showing high failure rates over time, so the option of revision or replacement is out of the question with this doc. I have had a CT scan, Fluro/barium swallow, and endoscopy over the past three months. They believe my band has tightened due to scarring of the stomach lining. -
They are doing a revision because of problems im having so maybe that will jump start the weight loss!

I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?

Another newbie with many, many questions!
WASaBubbleButt replied to ash's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I would not get a band. Had one and revised to a sleeve. Bands are very hard, everything under the sun affects restriction, complications are very high, and in three years of posting on message boards I have never met anyone banded for 10 years or more. I don't think many keep them for 10 years. We hear about these people but I have yet to meet one even on message boards. Sleeves are easier, far easier than banding. Complications are low, weight loss is better and faster, people are happier with sleeves than they are bands. BTW, welcome to the forum! -
Another newbie with many, many questions!
Elisabethsew replied to ash's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome! I too had a band and was miserable with it. After 3 years and 1 day, I revised to a sleeve and got the band out. Although I followed all the rules, the band never worked for me and the acid reflux was horrible. With a sleeve, it works right away. You have no appointments to fill it and then unfill it, etc. There is no foreign device inside you squeezing your upper stomach and the weight loss is proven to be faster and in a higher percentage than with the band. Some MDs say 6 months and some use a year as a guideline for getting pregnant so ask your OB/GYN. As for recovery, the sleeve was a much easier recovery than the band was. I went back to work as an RN and did two 13 hours shifts one week post-op. -
It's wanted to share progress pics along the way. I've lost 52lbs total. I've lost 26 since surgery 7 weeks ago. The first pic was not even me at my heaviest weight. I was 222 lbs when this pic was taken five days before my revision. The next one was taken yesterday. I think I'm looking happier.

Presurgery and I can't decide to keep WLS public or private
Kissifur replied to soccermama's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ditto all of this. Maybe I have a skewed perception because I've succeeded with my lap-band and then regained weight (due to complications and issues with the band). Back when I first had surgery, I was all gung-ho about educating people about WLS and spreading the gospel, so to speak. The problem is, most people consider WLS surgery to be a magical cure-all for obesity, and if you start gaining weight back, you become the "friend of a friend of a friend" that everyone warns you about when you first tell them you're looking into surgery. They think that because you're sharing something private with them, that it's public knowledge and can then be gossiped about, or that you want their advice on how to lose weight. Bottom line is that it is not your responsibility to educate the masses about the joys of WLS. If you aren't 100% comfortable telling people about having surgery, dealing with all of the extra input that people will think you want (because God forbid we don't want to know about the friend of a friend of a friend that died, or regained weight, or had major complications), or with their suggestions on "better" ways to lose weight, then don't tell anyone. For me, I don't plan on telling any more people than absolutely necessary about my revision from lap-band to RNY (more people know about it now than I'm comfortable with, due to my parent's inability to respect my personal privacy). I'm no one's WLS mentor or the poster-child for WLS, and I don't wish to become one. What capacity do you serve on this forum? You are not a poster child but you do offer your input. It is left up to each individual to take your information and use it in a way that best suits them. -
For those who had band to sleeve in one surgery..
Crazypants replied to Band07's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello! Band revision to sleeve 4 days ago. My dr did at the same time but I know other drs require it to be done in 2 surgeries. No, didn't take fills out beforehand. My surgery was a piece of cake... Seemed easier than the band surgery years ago. -
For those who had band to sleeve in one surgery..
Nursebarbie replied to Band07's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone, I went to visit my new surgeon (I'm Kaiser now) to discuss my lap band slipping. I was thinking we could just take out a little saline and see what happens. Never heard of the sleeve before today but when he discussed this option while taking out my band at the same time- I immediately knew it was the right decision. My band has been a total nightmare. The group who performed my band surgery pretty much deserted me after my operation. Kaiser has been a dream come true for me. There were things about the band I was never told- like most people get it out about 2-5 years later and almost nobody has it in after 10 years. I was led to believe this band stayed in forever. I also thought it was going to be a simple surgery. Wrong. I have been hospitalized so many times for problems. I faint after I eat sometimes because its pushing up again my Vagal nerve. And its been too tight for months- finally after months of vomiting/getting food stuck constantly/and slime issues- it slipped. Thank God, because it slipped I pay for nothing- my insurance will cover this as well as my revision to the sleeve. I am so excited to have my surgery June 28th. It is so helpful to read all your comments and stories. Today my surgeon removed almost all of the saline explaining it helps to reduce any swelling to make surgery and revision easier. And I am so happy to NEVER have to get a fill or have this port accessed again. Yippee! -
For those who had band to sleeve in one surgery..
Nursebarbie replied to Band07's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for the encouragement. I'm very excited to finally do something permanent. One of the selling points for me about getting the band in the first place was that it was reversible. What a fallacy that was. And not only that, who wants to reverse back to being fat? Was I going to wake up one day and say I'm tired of being thin, I miss being fat? Of course not. Now that I have this band I am miserable. Lost 2 jobs due to being out sick too long. All this for 35 pounds lost? Anyhow I am so grateful that I can have a revision to the sleeve when my band is taken out. Hopefully. I look forward to a permanent solution rather than the roller coaster ride called Lap Band. -

I voluntarily unfilled my band 4 weeks before my revision. When Dr Garcia got in there, he said everything looked great and there was NO irritation (which is what I did it for...NO irritation) I was then sleeved right after he removed it -

My doctor will be taking out the fluid months before surgery. I have had chronic heartburn for three plus years and need the esophagus to heal prior to revision surgery. -
Albuquerque New Mexico and Presbyterian Insurance
NoMoBand posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great news! If you have Presbyterian Insurance and live close to the Albuquerque area, we no longer have to go to El Paso Texas for bariatric surgery. Presbyterian now has a brand new startup local Bariatric program affiliated with Presbyterian Rust Hospital in Rio Rancho. Del Sol is still contracted with Presbyterian insurance and you can still use their bariatric program there, but, if you live closer it may be worth looking into. Dr. William Van Rice is the bariatric doctor for their program. I had lap band to sleeve revision surgery and can only give Dr. Van Rice the highest of recommendation. Jake -

Here's the link to my testimony after my surgery. Please read it. If you have any more questions let me. I'm down 64lbs total since my revision. My weight loss is much better than when I first got my sleeve in 2010. I plan on giving a detailed update next week around my 5month post op. -
I have a link for the general info policy for BC/BS SURG.00024 Surgery for Clinically Severe Obesity That is the link to the revised new version effective January 1,2008. They have also revised the plastic surgery and now you must require to have hanging skin past your private area in order for it to be considered medically necessary along with skin problems...etc... oh..and pictures.. hope it helps!

I'm sure I saw fluffy on either the sleeve or plication board and I think she was having a revision in the near future.Seems a little premature if she was in fact only banded in Oct. I could be wrong , it may be a dufferent fluffy.

Vertical Sleeve vs Band
lml32937 replied to medicgipson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
a) there is a "forum" on lapband to sleeve patients you might want to check that out- I have (for another week) the lap band and am getting a revision to a sleeve- I am NOT a lapband hater- I am not having my lapband removed because of slippage, erosion, malfunction etc. I have an auto immune disease and it is thought by my phsyicians that my body is "rejecting" the band as a foreign body in my body and not allowing me to get better physically from the auto immune issues. I was successfull with the band- lost 100lbs and about 89 inches all over- I have since gained back about 35 lbs total over the last year due to in-activity (no exercise due to back injury) and having band un-filled- My personal advice would be this- Unless you have only minimal weight to loose i'd say 45-75 lbs then consider the band- if you have 75+ lbs to loose then look at your other options- The studies when I was banded 3 years ago about the sleeve were not available and now that I am being sleeved there are new studies out about the band. I am reading now that the band is normally only reccomended for 4-5 years and that statistically most band pts have it removed and revisioned into something else. Only you and your doctor know what is best for you, your body and your future- You should not let anyone on here persuade or disuade you. We all have made whatever decisions we made on our own- Yes it is nice to have advice and opinions BUT you have to live with what you decide etc... There is a pain in the arse factor too about the band with fills, follow up etc- looking back it was a bit of a pain but not to inconvenient- AND there were a lot of foods I couldnt eat but I found new foods that I did like that I would have NEVER tried before.. So for me it wasnt a complete loss... Good luck with whatever you decide to do- I'm sure you will do great! -
Esophageal manometry and 24 hour PH test - how was it for you?
Amy* posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all, I am experiencing reflux sypmtoms two years post Gastric Bypass (revision from lap band) and ultrasound didn't show anything so I now have to have an esophageal manometry and 24 hour PH test done. Both tests involve having tubes inserted up my nose and down the back of my throat, and it's causing me some anxiety thinking about having it done. I woke up with an NG tube after the surgery and having it removed was quite uncomfortable, so I'm nervous about being awake while having two seperate tubes inserted. Can anyone talk me through their experience? Did you gag/choke while they were putting the tubes in?-

Australians - Which State or Territory are you in?
nicoleea replied to Hop_Scotch's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went with Michael Talbot. You don't get much face-time with him, but his staff are all really good. Especially his nurse Patricia. Progress is going alright. Mine was a revision from lapband so my weightloss is probably going to be slower. But so far I'm really pleased. Start a new job this Friday and they were able to get me in for surgery with enough time to recover so I'm very happy. -

Revision not enough weight loss.
DMWLS replied to Laura Deleon Reyes's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am new here as well and I am considering revising to the bypass from having the sleeve last year in May. I have vertigo and very much confined to my bed accept for when I am working, which is quite difficult. However, I have been stalled for quite some time and have picked back up 30 of the pounds I lost. I started at 326 and the scales 279 now, I am seriously considering the bypass. Some days I can eat more than I should and other days I don't eat nothing.I do a lot of bored snacking sine I work from home. I wold love to follow your journey and perhaps be each others support. -
Surgery cancelled: Devestated.
Stephanie Rodriguez68 replied to cpower100's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My problem is, I am getting a revision from Lap band to RNY. My band needs to be removed to fix the hernia under it and the Surgeon suggested RNY because of my GERD. I live in Central Texas and I coulnt find anyone to take me. The surgeons where I work didn't want to mess with a past surgery not done by them, nor did any of the others in my general area. I didn't go back to my original surgeon because he kept giving me the run around and I think my insurance didnt cover him. They are strict about using surgeons with the Bariatric center of Excellence certification. Thanks DaronB. Im am going to the clinic tomorrow to pick up the Iron supplements they want me on. I have to take them 3 times daily. I asked about my labs done at the hospital, but no one told me. After my procedure, I was kind of out of it, so I forgot about it. I have had low iron since I was a teenager. I have taken different supplements but nothing makes then NORMAL. I agree that there was a big screw up all the way around. Even the nurse thought so too and apologized several times. Im thankful they discovered all this before doing surgery, its just upsetting to have waited this long just to be told No. Im hopeful things will work out next time. -
PLATEAU!!! How many of hit a plateau at approximately 1 year out?
sharonann2u replied to ShelleyB's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am post op by almost 3 years now. I lost my first 100 pounds all within the first year. In may 2008 I hit my Plateau. This is now June 2010 and I have not lost one more pound. I have maintained my current weight now for just over two years. Is this normal? I don't know. I ahve asked my Dr. the Nurses, everyone and I was told that this is the end of the road for me. I cannot believe that or begin to understand why this has happened. I have always monitored my food, my fluids and yes my protein shakes as well as all the protein and I don't lose the weight. Do I exercise? well yes I do and I even dance (Zumba) and what ever ese I can get myself into these days. I cannot and will not believe that this is my end in weightloss for I am still about 40 pounds over weight. I am very frustrated. I ahve had my fill of adjustments. I ahve been filled and then un filled due to problems and I was last filed in March of 2010 and as of two weeks ago I had to have one cc taken back out. Why this happens to me I don't know. I wish I could have a revision doen because I have had so mmany problems. From PB, night reflux, vomiting and even pain when swallowing, hoever I am no longer having those issues. I really wish i would have had the bypass done or another procedure. I guess I am at a loss here as most of you are too. -
My rules for when to break the rules and pounds as units of time.
kyethra commented on kyethra's blog entry in Blog 13553
Before the band, I used to sometimes measure time in terms of "pounds ago". 100 pounds ago was quite a while ago, high school years. 60 pounds ago would be more recent, about when I was 19 and 20. 40 pounds ago I met my husband. Twenty pounds ago I started to give up on losing that 20 pounds from 40 pounds ago. Now that I have the band, I suppose I could try it in the opposite sense. It is sort of strange in a way, having my linear sense of time disrupted. Maybe its a good reminder that life and time really are cyclical. Now I can say that 40 pounds ago I had weight loss surgery and was waiting to see if I got into grad school. 10-15 pounds ago, I found out I got in. Hmm... I've also been working on my rules for when to not follow the rules. Normally there is a stage in every diet for me, when "just this once" starts to happen more and more frequently until its always just this once and I think we all know that it is pretty downhill from there. ) So I have my rules on when there can be no rules. If it doesn't fit in here, then sorry, I have to be good: 1) My birthday; whole day is a free for all (if my birthday is "missed" due to illness I may reschedule for a later date. 2) Celebration dinners (and no, everyday cannot be a celebration) 3) Christmas, New years eve, the eight major pagan holidays, and maybe a couple other holidays I specify in advance. 4) Cinco de Mayo. Its mexican food and margaritta goodness. 5) the times I order movie theater popcorn so long as these times do not exceed 8 times per year and the bucket never exceeds a medium (probably won't be bigger than a small). I get soda on those days too. 6) vacation If its not on that list, then its not allowed to be a free for all. Naturally, I reserve the right to revise my list, but I think this is a good starting one.
