    bypass verses sleeve?

I was in the situation. I felt all along the sleeve is the way I wanted to go. But after talking with my doctor, I chose gastric bypass for a few different reasons. I was diagnosed with Barretts, which was caused by gerd. .Also I do not have the disipline to control what I eat. As of today I am down 19 pounds in 2 weeks. The surgery itself went very smooth and with little discomfort. I am in the 60+generation and I felt it would be hard to break all these bad habits I had for years. So far the gastric surgery is making it much easier. .But it all depends on your health and what your doctor feels is right for you. Either way, I wish you the best of luck ambpete
  2. I still have 3 months to go, and I have my visit with surgeon on 8/19. I feel like I have read everything over and over on which surgery to have. Im leaning towards the bypass, but I keep going back an forth to the sleeve.. how do you know which one to do??
  3. I don't know how the ones after surgery travel for jobs pleasure or whatever. Left for San Antonio Wednesday to see my daughter graduate from airforce basic training... Here until Sunday... And it's tough. Takes a lot of planning.. Also the stress of no scale... Yes I am a scale-aholic!! Making me crabby!! Upside so proud of my daughter. She graduated with honors... Top 10% of her class!!!
  4. I'm a tough stick for IVs too and mine collapse after about 24 hours, so during my 6 days in the hospital (got readmitted for pneumonia) I had 5 IVs. I was a complete wreck about that! I asked for the house doctor once and he just happened to be a pediatrician and he was fine with tiny little veins and crying patients. I also requested and got a PICC line nurse (I think they're called) -- the ones who have to put PICC lines in if you need them. She wrapped my arm in a hot, thick wet towel and put a plastic bag on my arm and left it there for about 10 minutes before attempting a stick. That worked really well. I've also asked for the anesthesiologist before and that worked well. When I was readmitted to the hospital they sent a girl in to take blood and she had "STUDENT" on her name badge bigger than her name. I very politely told her she was probably a great student but I'm a tough stick and she wasn't going to practice on me. I feel like such a PITA when I do it but it's my body and IVs and blood draws are one of my big phobias, so they can just deal with it!
  5. I left Austin in plenty of time to catch my 1:30 flight from San Antonio to Monterrey, Mexico. I was relaxed and in a really good place. After missing the exit for the airport, I had to drive a few miles to turn around and get back on track. Still time....but a little rushed now. I get into the airport complex and can't find any signs that point me to parking for Terminal 1....so I drive around in circles for 10 minutes or so.....but now, I'm starting to get annoyed. I finally find the parking garage and speed up and down the isles looking for an open spot. I finally found a spot, grabbed by luggage and starting trying to figure out how find Terminal 1. No signs, no arrows, none to help...I'm just running in circles looking for a way out. Finally I get out of the garage, but I'm at Terminal 2. Now I'm beginning to PANIC. I start jogging across the parking lot to Terminal 1 - it's 94 degrees. I get into the terminal, make it to the Ticket counter and was told the plane was delayed by 2 FREAKING HOURS:cursing: I calm down, email my patient coordinator, eat some yogurt, and listen to one of my audio books. We finally board, but sit, and sit, and sit in the hot sun. The plane backs up, stops, then RETURNS TO THE GATE:scared2: and we sit some more. FINALLY we take off and have an uneventful trip to Monterrey. More later
  6. My preop starts on Thursday. I have to drink 3 or 4 Slimfast shakes a day for 10 days. Seems counter intuitive since each one has 18 g of sugar. Anyone else have to drink these Pre op? The good thing is that they are filling, unlike regular Protein shakes.
  7. Hello everyone! ! Great news I'm finally here. I now have my surgery date and I'm nervous and excited at the same time! I start my liquid diet on the 1st for 10 days. Buying the rest of my food this weekend. I'm am so ready to start this next chapter of feeling, looking and being healthy.
  8. Just got my date today - December 10. I was a bit disappointed that they couldn't schedule me sooner, but I absolutely cannot wait for the big day. I have to think of all the positives...get CHRISTMAS shopping done, clean and decorate the house, then relax during the holidays during recovery. It's all good. Congrats on your December 9 surgery. Yay us!
  9. I had to wait 10 months because there were so many obstacles to overcome. I just had surgery 9 days ago and the long wait actually made me prepared, confident, and successful. However, there were times when it felt like I was waiting forever and that the surgery may not actually happen. Learn as much as you can about bariatric surgery and diet through research or from forums like this one. Losing weight and exercising before surgery will help you in the long run and help you reach your weight loss goal quicker after surgery. Good luck!
  10. Taking the classes I was required to take helped me understand the whole process better and reassured me it was the right thing for me. Also being able to lose the 10% the ins co wanted was helpful. I know I can do this. Reading a ton of Info was also very helpful. Hope this helps.
  11. Been on pre op diet for about 10 days now . Gets easier after 3rd/4th day. The fortnight from hell, my Surgeon calls it.

    October 14th is the date

Hi! I'm also scheduled on 10/14. I go in tomorrow for my last pre-op weigh in. I have also been fighting a cold for over a week (have managed not to get it so far but the symptoms are hanging on the edge) - it's driving me nuts!!! Good luck to you! Karen
  13. @@BLERDgirl yes I was up walking just as soon as my eyes would stay open and I walked all day and night long. The nurses were very impressed with my dedication to walking but the reason I was so dedicated was about every lap I did I would get out a good burp which always made me feel so much better! I just got a little cup of water to drink and the nurse said to take an hour to drink it I looked at it and thought no way will this take an hour lol I have 10 min left and just a little half way through it lol who knew
  14. I have to beat the hospital in 5 hours. But have been busy trying to get work done before I go in. I can't sleep anyway. I haven't even packed yet. I was trying not to focus on the countdown. So now I have something to do since I can't sleep. Just a little nervous since the only time I cheated on my 10 day (plus for me) liquid diet was Monday evening. I had a Five Guys burger and fries. So I'm hoping everything is digested thoroughly. I also have only told my husband (and psych) exactly what kind of surgery I am having. Everyone knows I have has health problems and GI issues so they just think that is all it is for. I just don't want to and won't put myself through unnecessary criticism right now. I'm ready to do this and on my terms. I hope all of you are ready too.
  15. Got my surgery prescriptions (Scopolamine patch, Lortab elixer, Pepcid, Celebrex, Zofran and 1 more I can't remember). I don't have insurance for meds. So I called my local Walgreens and found out just my 16 oz of Lortab elixer is $230! Wow. I"m a disabled vet who gets most of my care thru the VA (my surgery is being done by a civilian dr, thru Medicare) and all of my rx's come from the local VA pharmacy for free. I called the pharmacy and they said if my VA primary care provider rewrites those rx's, I can get them thru the VA pharmacy. So I took them into his office today and gave it to the front office lady, with a note of direction for my dr (who doesn't yet know about my surgery) that I needed to pick up the rx's by Fri afternoon, as I'm sposed to be 3 hrs away at the hospital next Monday at 10 am. If anyone here has ever dealt with the VA healthcare system they know how stupid it was for me to drop off my script to the office lady. The dr may never see it. Or he may not approve to give me these meds. And will they call me? Probly not. It'll just get lost in paperwork. What do I do then? Anyone have success in getting civilian scripts filled by the VA pharmacy?
  16. It depends on your insurance. I gained weight on my "6 month monitored diet" required by insurance, but all they were interested in was the 6 months of documentation that I went, not in my results. If I'd lost weight, I'd have been just under a qualifying BMI for surgery so I was kind of stuck. I was submitted the day of my first consult with the surgeon and started then and there (AFTER insurance submission) applying myself to my new lifestyle. Lost the required 10 pounds prior to surgery, (and then some with time to spare). You'll have to see what your particular requirements are.
  17. Hi everyone! I am just starting my surgery journey and need all the help I can get. I've gained and lost the 160 lb monster that's attached to me so many times it's insane. However, now with the threat of needing new hips it's just time for "her" to die. I have certain health problems but managed to dodge diabetes and cholesterol issues. I have high BP, now the hip thing, and sleep apnea. I am fairly active still for 330lbs doing hair about 50 hrs a week. I've been as high as 400lbz and as low as 189 in the past 10 years. I'm at the end of my rope. I need advice on how to get insurance to help pay. I have. BCBS of Louisiana. Has anyone here hD success with them? Any help is sincerely appreciated.
  18. Hmmm ... if you have really eaten only 1200-1500 calories/day for the last year, go to the gym regularly, weigh 250 pounds, but and you have lost only 10 pounds in a year, there might be something going on. Have you been tested for hypothyroidism? You should definitely tell all this to your surgeon and see what she/he thinks about this. Very best wishes.
  19. Hello All, Im new to the forum but Ive been reading and more and more im getting anxious and inspired by all the stories. I have BCBS TX and I started my journey 06/23/14 only req'mts were BMI 40 + (mine is 42.6) Psyc eval, Nutrition counseling, and EGD. All have been done my file was rcv'd by ins on 08/01/14, and as of today its in review, im a little nervous and scared of being denied. I wondering how much longer will I have to wait!?!?! My tentative surgery date is 09/26/14 but could be sooner if approval process picks up the pace. Please enlighten me with hope lol

    HAS ANYONE TAKEN B-12 INJECTIONS

Just FYI, There is an alternative to injections and large oral pills. I take 500mcg sublingual B12 3-4x week. They are tiny tablets that dissolve under your tongue. My B12 level was high normal on my 6 month bloodwork. $11.25 for 250 tablets. I had surgery 10 months ago and I'm still on my first bottle. pretty cheap even if you did take them everyday.
  22. Yes surgery scheduled for 10/22. I am self pay with all tests completed and waiting on results and have already started my two week liquid diet. Getting very excited thinking I probably should have done this years ago. I hope I will be saying that after surgery as well. Only problem I seem to be having is being tired/low energy and I probably need to keep a better count of my protein intake. Would love from other georgia folks as well.
  23. CurvyCakes

    So dissapointed!

Curvy, Was the CPAP an insurance requirement? Or was this ordered by your doc because of a condition? I have sleep apnea that has been untreated for years I'm talking 10 plus years. Surgeon required new sleep study which confirmed I have obstructive sleep apnea. I was required to sleep on it for 3 weeks prior to my surgery or no surgery.Plus having the sleep apnea helps with the WLS approval as well because with most insurance companies sleep apnea is a comorbidity. Well I know u know that already being a utilization review nursing professional lol. Had I known earlier I would have worried u sick everyday asking u " do u think they r going to approve me" lmbo. They came back with an approval in 3 days so that was awesome.

    October 14th is the date

Had my RNY bypass on Tuesday 10/14/14 @ 10am and was released to come home Wednesday @ 5pm. I was not in any pain after surgery and was able to do 4 laps around the nurses station about 2 hours after surgery. I had a drain which the Dr. removed before discharge. I have only been drinking water and protein shakes. So far 2 shakes a day for about 47-48 grams of protein. My water intake has been right around the recommended 64 ounces. Still using pain medication for slight abdominal discomfort, once or twice a day. My Dr. appointment is Monday and at that point I should be able to move on the soft food. Even with all the information out there I still seem to have so many questions! Everyones experience seems to be sooooo different. So far everything for me is going well. (and I did just knock on wood).
