Hi, Debbie. You and I have a lot in common! I had RNY surgery 10/2009 and for the first time have gained 11 pounds. My hubby and I started at the YMCA but I am still a stress eater. Have you increased your exercise or lowered your calorie intake? I am pulling for us both to succeed at this. Katie

This isn't exactly a mantra, but at 62 I know that I want my hubby and I to grow old together (ok really old!) and if I don't change my eating and exercise habits, my pre existing conditions will cut my life short. My hubby is diabetic and he needs to increase his exercise too. That is my motivation. In a nutshell,
    USE IT OR LOSE IT!

Yes, in theory this is a good article but it absolutely can lead to risky behaviors. Also, it is not much healthier to load our emotional needs onto another person instead of onto a fork. We must find the acceptance and comfort within ourselves, not expect an outside source to fix it, be it arms or food. I have undergone a lot of trauma and loss and terror in the last year and recently found solace in the arms of someone who was there for me when I needed a human most. Unfortunately, I really let my guard down and leaned upon this person too much, and they weren't able to handle it and withdrew their comfort just when I had cracked open the cavern of need.

Yes it's a great article but might leave singles or people in bad marriages feeling like they have no recourse. If you are in these situations you can find solutions to your isolation too but it might take a lot of work and possibly some therapy. I know firsthand that loneliness can lead to all kinds of risky behaviors.

Well I was banded on 11/24/08 and I think it was the best decision I ever made. I am now 1 week post-op and down 18 pounds!! I feel great and I even look much better my dr in NJ is Dr.Borao I would recommend him to anyone hes the greatest and talk about a dr thats always by yourside... <33
Well im only 18 and i weighed 194 pre op and technically shouldnt have been banded but I was addicted to food and wouldve never lost it on my own so therefore it probably saved my life cause at 18 with sky high cholesterol and tryglicerides I was headed for despair so I really think lap band in the long run saved my life.. Well its 3:20am here in NJ so I better get some sleep because i have to be up at 8:30am to walk so ttyl :thumbup:dont be strangers. xO:thumbup:

Hi everyone! New to the site. I had my RNY 4 yrs ago, lost 100# and within the past couple months have gained 10#. Anyone have ideas on how to jump start my metabolism again? I admit I've been stress eating and need some help getting back on the "road".

I'm not an exerciser and really have never been but I started journaling again with my fitness pal. Hoping that will help.

I've been logging in MFP for over two years and would be lost without it. Perhaps the most important thing is to find the calorie goal that works best for you to meet your weight loss goal. MFP applies a "one size fits all" formula to determine your calorie goal based on your weight loss goal - e.g. lose half a pound a week or a pound or whatever. The key is to use that as a starting point for a week and see what happens with your weight. If you lose the weight you're looking for, great! If not, adjust the goal up or down 100-200 calories and try it again for a week. That process allows you to fine tune MFP for your particular goals and lifestyle. One of the most powerful tools you can have in your arsenal.
Congratulations on your weight loss and welcome to the forum. This is a special place with lots of great folks!

Wow Kaitie, we are alike! I came down with a stomach bug yesterday. Dave, the journalizing has helped. I set it for one pound a week so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the support.

It is indeed in my signature and has been (and continues to be) an inspiration to me - "Persistence, along with absolute belief, can never be defeated." Some other favorites:
"You're not ready until you're convinced." "It is of no use saying 'We're doing the best we can', success means doing what is necessary." "Change your thoughts and you change your world." "Think from the end." "Perfection is not a criteria for success." "It's not just about the weight you lose. It's about the life you gain." "Hold the vision and trust the process." You guys have a great day!

When I am in the gym working out I think to myself: "Building twisted steel and sex appeal!"
Other mantras include: "Attitude is everything" "This is my individual journey and I am finding my way" "I am growing and changing." "I make appropriate food choices based on my goals." "I am finding my own recovery."
    Great topic!!!

Hi, I had gastric bypass. Due to a congenital disorder, my body makes no thyroid at all and I take .225 mg of Levothyxrine daily. My weight loss was quite consistent, my surgeon and I were both pleased when I got to my goal weight. I have since gained 8 pounds but don't believe it is thyroid related but putting too much food in my stomach. You can do this and be very successful. Best of luck to you in your weight loss journey!

    Hi,
I am only 10 weeks post-op, but from what I understand there is no finish line. Everyday will challenge you. I use a food scale and weight out my portions of food for the day. I do not eat anything with more that 12grams of sugar per serving, even though I know I can tolerate more than that. I work out 6 days a week. (a mix of weights and cardio) I hired a personal trainer. I am training for two 5K races. I joined the Obesity Action Coalition. I have surrounded myself with friends and family that support my new lifestyle. I read anything and everything I can get my hands on, that I think will help me on this new journey. I talk to my dietician weekly, and I go to all of my follow up appointments. I joined two support groups. I say daily affirmations to myself when I wake up. I TRY to eat 100 grams of Protein a day. I know 10 weeks is nothing compared to the rest of my life, but so far these are the things that I have done and continue to do to make each day successful. Hope this helps!!
