UniqueHandle reacted to SleeveToBypass2023 in Sleeve to Bypass revision
So I had this revision in June, and I can tell you that the weight loss will not be like it was with the sleeve. I had it because I developed GERD, esophagitis, gastritis, and a TON of pre-cancerous polyps all through my stomach. So I also didn't have a choice. I was on 80mg daily of Nexium, Pepcid for breakthrough, Tums, and still had break through GERD anyway.
With the sleeve, I lost 30 pounds in the first 2 weeks. With the revision, I lost 14. I also wasn't interested in doing it for weight loss, since I was chugging along and doing well until it all went stupid. My goal was to get back to living my life, get back to my beast mode work outs, get back to feeling good and not having pain. And that's what the surgery is doing for me.
I was finally having hair regrowth when I had to have the revision, so I'm fully expecting to see more Hair loss. It's started shedding more again, so I'm mentally preparing for it.
I can also say, the recovery from the bypass has been SO SO much better than with the sleeve. I honestly wish I had just done the bypass to begin with. So much less pain, I was up and around faster, able to do things better, could handle my pills and supplements (had to crush or completely eliminate them with the sleeve for the first 4-5 weeks), able to handle cold liquids (couldn't with the sleeve), able to get my fluids in so much easier (I drank a 20oz of Water in the hospital the day I had my surgery and could barely handle 3-4oz with the sleeve). So all in all, I'm exceptionally happy I did the revision.
No more GERD, no more PPI, no more pain, much easier recovery, and while the weight is still coming off, it's doing so at a slower and more manageable pace. I wish you all the luck, and I promise you'll feel so much better after the revision.

UniqueHandle reacted to ryan_86 in Loss of restriction from VSG to bypass
I'm close to 5 weeks post-revision from sleeve to bypass, and I noticed the same thing. The doctor told me it's normal.
Here's my explanation for what's going on:
The place where a normal stomach meets the intestine is called the pyloric valve. The stomach churns to further break down food, the valve opens to let food pass into the intestine. We (meaning sleevers) had a small stomach, and because the valve was still present and behaving normally with a sleeve, we felt restriction, meaning the valve didn't open more frequently just because the stomach was smaller. With bypass, the valve is removed (technically it's bypassed since they leave it in along with the first 30cm or so of the intestine). The connection between the pouch and intestine is called a stoma, and liquids and purees will move right through it because it's not a valve/it's open all the time. In my experience, it's possible to drink/eat purees too fast so that they don't drain through the stoma quickly enough, but you're right, it takes some special effort to do that. Restriction is a bigger factor when you get to solids, which I did this week. If you eat too much too fast, it just sits in the pouch. Think about a sink that drains slowly because there's junk in the pipes; that's the same principle - too much stuff trying to move through a too-small pipe. The pouch doesn't churn food up like a stomach to make its passage easier. If the solid you too big/too much/too dry/too fast, it sits and feels very heavy, your body starts producing mucus to lubricate the passage of the food through the stoma (this is what people call "the foamies"), and if that doesn't do the trick, that food is coming back up. I had that lovely experience with ground turkey and thus learned that while I was told to chew thoroughly with my sleeve, I could ignore that advice. Not so with a pouch; when they say chew until it's a paste, you have to. So restriction does become a greater factor when you proceed to solids. It really does force you to slow down, eat small bites, chew VERY thoroughly. Like with sleeve, I imagine it's still possible to overeat if you graze, so it also still takes some discipline to make smart food choices, pay attention to when you're satisfied, and be deliberate with how long a meal is.
Also bear in mind that bypass is not just a restrictive procedure. It's malabsorptive as well.

    Good luck!

    Hey y'all!
My VSG is scheduled for 7/17/23. I am super excited! I had a very toxic relationship with diets in particular. I was always "chunky" as a child. Buying pants was a struggle. The weight sat okay on me, but Definity not in the right places. I recall, in middle school - being part of a dance recital and having to buy an adult small dress, to fit my shape. Since then I've been bombarded with "shut/zip your mouth" - diet mentality. When I reached 200lb as an adult, I was mortified, but it did not affect my daily living. Then the pandemic hit; suddenly it was 230, 250, then 270. At my highest I was 295lb. I used to love walking, being active, dragging my friends out to do fun things. Now it almost feels like moving from room to room is a chore. My mind is right and set on the ultimate goal. My therapist and I worked tirelessly for years to get to the bottom of the mental issues that causes me to go to food for comfort.
I am ready to flip my world upside down, to START LIVING AGAIN ❤️

I had my surgery on March 22; I've lost 102 pounds. My starting weight at home was 308.6 and my weight this morning was 206.4. However, my rheumatologist has my highest weight at 314.8, so according to him, I've lost 108 pounds. Whatever the loss, it's great. I still see a heavy person when I look in the mirror, but my clothes were a 4x and now I can wear a large.
I had the sleeve and I've had terrible reflux. So bad, I have inhaled it into my lungs while I sleep several times. My doctor wants to do a revision after the holidays. 😒

I can't believe it. As of today, 7 months and 1 week since my surgery, I have officially lost 100 pounds!!!! I was 388 the day of my surgery. I cried this morning when I weighed myself. My next goal is to hit 270, which is what I weighed when I met my husband. After that, my last goal is to get to 200. Once I do that, I'll have to maintain it for a while and then SKIN SURGERY!!!!!
There's no magic cure, no pill or food or drink that just magically makes the weight melt off. This is the result of the sleeve surgery, Keto, working out 5-6 days per week (and alternating between cardio and weight training), and staying on track with what, and how much, I eat.
No one thing works for me, it all has to be combined into a partnership for my mind and body. Surgery alone isn't enough. Keto alone won't work (at least it didn't for me). Working out by itself helps a little, but not enough. It ALL has to work together, and the key is to stay motivated and dedicated. Stalls suck, and they get frustrating. But as long as I keep my eyes on the prize, I'm actually gonna get there!!!! I never thought this was possible, but here I am

You have been dumping this whole time! Every time you have to lay down after you eat it is because you are dumping.
Have you tried eating high Protein, veggies & fruit (natural sugar)?
I would stick with a Bariatric Eating protocol instead of filling your body with sugar & crap.

I had rny on 3/1. I’m eating everything. Just got the ok to eat raw veggies and I couldn’t wait to have a salad. Somethings are too much for me - like grilled chicken (too tough) and seafood - but most things I’m handling well. Still staying away from the bad foods tho. Soups still go down a lot easier and better.

Congrats!! I am 12 days post op and down 21 lbs since surgery! Hopefully I get to move on Thursday to purée foods! Feeling great, haven’t been super hungry at all. I feel like I’ve been able handle more liquids than suggested from the beginning so I am measuring everything in hopes to not stretch out the pouch already.

I'm on week 5 foods, soft or cooked fruits. I've been slowly adding things and listening to my body. I had my post op last week and my Dr cleared me for normal life. I'm down nearly 60 pounds from the start of the program, only 20 since surgery. Next week is breads and I really have no desire to eat them. I crave cucumbers, almond butter, and chicken wings. I have trouble stomaching my Vitamins, they make me super sick. Most difficult has been getting used to not being able to drink for 30 min after eating. Most delightful has been seeing the difference in my mentality, I'm not feeling so down and sad anymore, I feel like I have something to look forward to every day. Every week is a new food group and every day is a new food, some of which I liked before and hate now, some I hated before and love now. I'm slowly getting more energy again and it makes me feel happy.

My surgery was on 3/3/21 (bypass) I am on regular foods except for tough/stringy meat, raw veggies, breads/rice/pasta, candy and fruits with skins. I am doing ok so far. Protein seems to have a weird/bland-like taste that I am not enjoying so some days I am having a hard time getting my 60+ gms in. Most days I just don't feel like eating...it has become a chore to do so. I have lost a total of 31 lbs (12 with the pre op diet and 19 post op) so I am loving that! Just wish food tasted better! I am happy to report that with the weight loss my feet don't scream at me when I get out of bed in the morning 😁

I am five weeks yesterday. I’m down 20 lbs (plus another 12 from pre-op diet). I thought I’d lose more the first month. I’m 5’9 and was 297 on surgery day. Otherwise, I’m doing well. I’ve basically listened to my body and intuition on advancing my diet vs my doctor’s office. That said, I’m still eating primarily soft foods and gradually trying more. I love that I’m not hungry all the time like I used to be. Most difficult for me is eating slowly and not drinking while eating. Also, I am not doing Protein Shakes. I work to get my Protein from my food or Fairlife milk.

Hi everyone! I thought I would finally check in. I had my surgery last Tuesday, March 22. I am six days post op and feeling okay.
I was able to de-gas by Thursday (ugh, gas pains are the worst) and I have been having daily bowel movements since then. I have a lot of medical issues and one of them is kidney disease and my kidneys are not at all happy about this surgery, which was a concern before surgery. I've actually gained weight because I cannot pee. All the Water I drink has nowhere to go but my feet, ankles and legs. I am eating about 250 calories a day because my new stomach (Phoebe) hates everything (everything tastes like metal - probably because of my meds). Oh, and I can't seem to keep my heart rate above 50.
That's all the bad stuff. The good news is that I haven't had any pain meds since the day of my surgery. My nausea isn't as bad as expected and after over doing it on Friday and taking it easy over the weekend, my incision pain is not too bad. Every day I set a goal for myself and so far, I am hitting my little goals. 🎖️

LOL! I thought I was the only one who named my new stomach (Steve, currently known as Baby Stevie). He hates several things I've tried, too. He's a picky little cuss at times.
Keep setting and reaching those little goals -- they're the best way of making steady progress toward the big ones.

I was supposed to have a revision from RNY to distal RNY yesterday but, things didn't go exactly as planned with me yesterday. When do they ever? Surgery was only supposed to be an hour ended up being over 3 hours. Doctor found a lot of adhesions that he had to clear up before he could see exactly what was going on. My previous surgeon from 20 years ago did an older version of the surgery which included a loop that my current surgeon wasn't expecting and made my new surgery more dangerous so he had to fix a hernia that was there and basically had to abort the surgery were planning on doing. Which means I'm going to need a different surgery once I heal up from this one. I am doing okay now of course I'm in some pain I had abdominal surgery yesterday regardless of the changes to our plans.
