SarahMan80 got a reaction from Rey Rodriguez in How much weight did you lose per month after 6 months?
Congratulations!! that is an awesome loss!!
    =====================================
My surgery was on 25 Jun 21....my 6 month mark was on Christmas day.
Month 1 start: 251.8 (surgery day)
    Month 2 start: 232.6 (-19.2 pounds)
    Month 3 start: 221.6 (-11 pounds)
    Month 4 start: 212.6 (-9 pounds)
    Month 5 start: 202.0 (-10.6 pounds)
    Month 6 start: 190.4 (-11.6 pounds)
Month 6 end: 188.4 (- 2 pounds [first major stall])
Total lost in my first 6 months was 63.4 pounds. I believe I am a slow loser and that is fine with me. I have had constant heartburn that is currently being taken care of with OTC medication and may need an additional surgery to repair it. It is what it is..... I am just glad that I am no longer obese and that my size 12 jeans are getting loose on me. I've still got 40+ pounds to make it to my goal but I am in no hurry. My high weight was 275 and everything is going the right direction....that is all I care about.

First, everyone’s rate of weight loss slows as they get closer to goal. So you’re doing fine. Secondly I’m your height and basically maintained my weight (110lb+/-) now for a good year. So, yes reaching a lower weight is possible. But you & I are still very different. We may be the same height but I’m 56, have a small frame, am not very active & have a low muscle mass.
I reached my goal at 6 months consuming about 900 calories. I continued to lose. I found it challenging to eat enough food to slow/stop the weight loss. It was 11 more months & losing another 11kg (24llb) before I stabilised. By then I was eating 1200-1300 calories. I eat about 1300 to maintain now. Honestly, my surgeon & GP were concerned with my continuing weight loss & my weight when I stabilised. They’re happy now but continue to monitor me carefully (every 3 or 4 months) for which I’m grateful.
I’ve looked at some of those weight loss tables too & they all advise different recommended calorie levels for me to lose or maintain. (An iIF one advised 1000 calories for me to maintain recently - wrong!) They don’t know who you are physiologically or psychologically. They don’t take into consideration your frame, your muscle mass, your weight loss history, your metabolic rate, etc. They don’t consider whether your weight loss goal is healthy for you.
The question is if you have to eat 650 calories to get to the weight you want how many calories will you need to eat to maintain your lower weight? A low weight goal is not always sustainable in the long term. Eating a restrictive low calorie diet also is not sustainable - it’s why diets fail. By continuing to eat so few calories you’ll also damage your metabolic rate? The surgery boosted your metabolism. Do you want to risk damaging it again?
Talk to your surgeon & your dietician about your goals. At this stage you should be continuing to increase your caloric intake & working out your long term eating plan.
I don’t know I if I will be able to maintain my weight into the future. Life can throw crap at us or I may decide I want to be more flexible in my food choices.

This was one of my concerns also. I am a total foodie that loves having a wine and snack night with my husband. After surgery I didn’t drink wine for about 3 months…..I really didn’t want to….even when my mind was craving it. When I did try it again, it took me hours to sip on maybe 2 ounces of wine. I didn’t feel tipsy or anything….I just wanted Water more. I am 4+ months out now and can drink a whole glass, slowly. If food/snacks are involved it takes me a lot longer. The thing is I now have to listen to my (much smaller) stomach for cues on when to stop eating/drinking and not what my head is telling me I want.
The thing is, it doesn’t bother me in the way I thought it would. I can still have a fun time shooting the s%it with the family while eating and drinking (way) less. I have no regrets.

The surgery is not bullshit. You just weren’t/aren’t in the right frame of mind to lose weight right now. Like others have said, it is a tool. If you are not disciplined enough to use the tool you will not get the results you want. Don’t get mad at the surgery/process/surgeon……be mad with yourself.
I truly hope you can figure out how to use the this tool to get the results you want….it is not magic after all. You actually have to put in the work.

SarahMan80 got a reaction from blackcatsandbaddecisions in 5 months post op - Thankful
It has been 5 months and I am so surprised at what a 5 months it has been. I have learned more about my body in the last few months that I ever knew in my previous 40+ years. I have learned the best foods for me, which ones keep me satisfied longer, which ones disagree with me and the ones that hinder weight loss. I am also learning how to leave food on my plate. Some things are easier to learn (portion sizes) while others are still an issue (remembering to eat slowly).
I have lost 84.6 overall….61.4 pounds since surgery…. and a combined total of 46 inches. As of today I am also officially in the overweight category. I am off my blood pressure and cholesterol medicine and my thyroid meds have been reduced. My knees and back feel better and I have so much energy!
I have a lot to be thankful for but today I am most thankful that my husband has taken over the thanksgiving meal duty!

SarahMan80 reacted to MandoGetsSleeved in Public Service Announcement - Careful crossing your legs!
About 6 months ago, I started randomly tripping/falling. I've had knee surgery several times (including total knee replacement) so I really assumed it was related to previous injuries. The falls were being caused by a condition called "foot drop" and I was referred for a nerve conduction study (interesting experience!) to see if the nerve was damaged beyond repair. If you aren't familiar with drop foot, it's basically where your ankle/toes are always pointed down and sometimes drag.
The first question the doctor asked me was "Have you recently lost a lot of weight" - First thoughts... RUDE... I figured it was because of my loose skin (which even I don't think is too horrible). When I responded with "YEP, 100lbs" - His next question "Have you been crossing your legs a lot?" - Me: YUP, it's awesome... haven't been able to do that comfortably since I was a little one!" - Doc: "Well, here's your problem: peroneal nerve dysfunction." He then proceeded to let me know that he sees quite a few WLS patients with this issue and wishes that this was something more widely known. Apparently there is a "fat pocket" that protects this nerve. When we lose weight quickly (vs gradually), in some it goes away completely and leaves that nerve more "exposed" to damage.
Looks like I'm going to be a lucky one and it's not too far gone to resolve with some physical therapy and some electrical stimulation. So, if you notice that you start to feel some numbness in the top of your foot and have a difficult time raising your ankle and toes after sitting for a bit with your legs crossed, just be aware that it *could* lead to something more serious.

Oh I hear you. I am 3 weeks out and I was ravenous for two and a half of those so don't give up hope (I was just about to!) Over the last few days as I have been eating more Protein and more solid textures it has definitely reduced drastically and I am staying much fuller for much longer after my still very small meals (1/3 cup approx).
    And what vikingbeast said. ^^^^

    A few things.
    1. You won't really feel the restriction you have until you get to real, solid food. And some foods will make you feel full faster than others. I ate part of a pancake and felt full for hours. Pork makes me feel fuller than chicken or beef. Everybody is different, and every body is different.
    2. I had hunger after and discovered, thanks to my surgeon, that what I think is "hunger" is actually reflux/heartburn. It doesn't happen often but yesterday I had a bit of pizza (options were extremely limited) and felt "hungry". I took a Pepcid per my doctor and suddenly didn't feel hungry any more.
    3. Not everyone loses their hunger. Most people feel it 'blunted' at first, but some people just don't.
    4. Two weeks after surgery, your body is still producing the same amount of stomach acid it did when you had the larger stomach. It takes some time to stop doing that, and in the meantime not only did my stomach growl, I made the most horrible personal noises! It went away around the time my incisions stopped itching, so 3-4 weeks post-op.

Stick to your plan. It will help you, and it WILL get better.

SarahMan80 reacted to Jaelzion in Listen to your sleeve…
I'm not sure what that person meant by "listening to your sleeve" but this is how I would interpret it. The restriction in your tummy will tell you when to stop eating. The feeling of being "full" can be very different post-op, so you have to learn the signals that indicate you are approaching being full. One time, shortly after surgery, I overate because I didn't recognize that I was full. It was a miserable experience, I was in severe distress until finally I threw up. After that, I learned how to identify when I've had enough to eat (and honestly, I rarely eat enough now to test my restriction).
Also, your sleeve can educate you in terms of WHAT you are eating. My new tummy does not do well with red meat. Regardless of how prepared, red meat is uncomfortable for my body to digest. I could keep trying to force it but I've chosen to "listen to my sleeve" and just leave red meat out of my diet.
Your body will give you signals about what it does and doesn't like and they are worth paying attention to.

I am in San Antonio, Tx so I might be a bit far for you.
I went to Dr Cárcamo at South Texas Surgeons and spent $9,900 for my sleeve. Self pay made everything super easy, I was able to schedule my surgery for 2 weeks after my initial appointment. The package includes the surgery, anesthesia, about 24 hours of a hospital care, 2 meetings with a nutritionist and a total of 3 or 4 appointments with the doctor afterwards. They are super nice and always available if I have questions.
I got the sleeve four weeks ago and after the initial post surgery discomfort (not pain) I am feeling fine and about 40 pounds down from when I first walked into the place. I'd recommend them to anyone.

@goodmanje, if you're just wanting to vent because you're angry and upset, that's fine. We've all been there at some time or other in our lives. But if you are interested in help with troubleshooting what's going on, you'll have to engage with us and provide more specific information. Like post an example of what you eat on an average day. And you have to be willing to change - for instance, you can't just say "I'm not a disciplined person". Losing weight requires discipline with or without surgery. There are lots of food tracking apps out there and you may not be able to figure this out without making use of one of them.
