Neensyb reacted to Deemar007 in What do you wish you had been told before surgery & after surgery?
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. The one thing that was never mentioned was you can get gout during the fasting before surgery, and also after. I'd say that was worse than any pain I'd ever had.
After surgery, food tasted terrible. So for me, I could care less what other people were eating. The surgery also disrupts your hunger hormone. So, people that I know that had the surgery, just were not hungry.
Constpation was a problem for me, but it settled after a few months.
I wish you the very best on you upcoming surgery and for a smooth transition after.

I just had my 6 month follow up and I have lost 51 lbs since the day of surgery. I am no longer considered obese! My BMI is 28.2. I now can start the process for my kidney transplant. Surgery date was 7/22/2020.

I’m (still) gassy too. At home I don’t hide it but whenever I was out, I would take a little more effort to conceal the situation by stepped away or doing it in a bathroom.

I had the opposite thing happen - I hardly fart at all. May be once or twice a day. I have odd days when I’m more farty but I haven’t worked out why. interestingly though, when I had a liver scan I was told my abdomen was full of wind which was blurring the images yet I didn’t feel windy & didn’t have an urge to fart at all.
The only time I had a few days in a row of being very windy was the Christmas before when I ate dessert a couple of times & when I made a white bean Soup. But you’ve adjusted your diet so this is likely not your issue.
I think your cause is be being constipated. If I hadn’t had a bowel for a second or third day I’d take a stool softener (coloxyl is gentle & you don’t get bowel spasms). See if that helps.

It's strange, I can't burp. I feel like I want to sometimes, but I can't and have to sit upright while it bubbles up and releases.

The farts are massive, long, loud and odorless thank god. It's kind of funny, but will get embarrassing soon I can just see it.

    Sorry, warning of embarrassment ahead.
I am day 25 post surgery and all has gone pretty well. The only issue I have is a huge increase of wind, with no smell at all, but in large amounts at a time. I can rival hubby and win hands down!!
Is this normal for anyone else? I don't have belly pain, and I eat very slowly and chew everything to a paste. The food consumed is on a teaspoon and I don't use a straw to drink. I've stayes away from wind causing foods, onions, cabbage, Beans etc and eat a very rounded and healthy diet. The weight is coming off as expected, and everything else is good (with the exception of number twos, once a week only).
Does anyone else suffer this embarrassing problem? Mind you, I think I am my step kids hero....even they can't outdo me!!

go back to what you were doing the first year. Not all the way back to Protein Shakes and soft foods, but the 'protein first, then non-starchy vegetables, then if you have room, a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb' rule (or some such). Weigh, measure, and log your food. Rein this in before you gain all your weight back - you can do it!

This morning I was putting together my end of the month list of goodies I need to purchase. Normally it includes my supplements and Tylenol along with all the other crap that ends up costing an arm and a leg. I realized I haven't ordered Tylenol for a long time and I checked on my Amazon list (I live in the middle of nowhere and they carry the powdered Tylenol and I found I really like that better than the capsules) and I have only ordered that one time since surgery! I used to take Tylenol around the clock for back aches, knee issues and headaches along with NSAISDS and other prescription meds and now I am only taking my thyroid med, my protonics, and vitamins!!! I don't remember the last time I took Tylenol !!!
Ditching the medications feels so good!!! I wish I had done this years ago!!!!

I felt exactly the same, until I started on purees....don't worry, liquid is fine. I can't take huge mouthfuls, but liquid doesn't have any negative impact on me at all now and I'm getting lots of it in every day. My skin is VERY thankful for it, so is my toilet time....sorry TMI....you DON'T want the Constipation believe me.

Oh you are in Canberra, I am on the Gold Coast. If you go to Coles, they have an Avalanche Caramel Latte. Very low in calories and might be a little gentler on your tummy. I have one a day, and I also drink black coffee (the Robert Timms bags) and I am day 18 post surgery. No issues at all.
I would probably get a thermal cup when you first start on coffee though, and take it super slowly to see how your belly reacts.

Just woke up back in our AirBnB. I remember waking in the PACU yelling and crying in pain. They gave me more meds and my ride home was relatively ok. I’ve been sleeping since but just walked and drank some Water. Back to bed for now. Haven’t really seen much except that my 🐱 is looking straight ahead rather than down at the floor.

    Hi @Lola2122.

I’m sorry you’re feeling so lousy. Yes, I had a terrible time with nausea right after surgery. Lots of puking and dry heaves. If you’re not already, hold a pillow against your abdomen when you throw up. I put a bowl on a counter so I didn’t have to lean over too much. Definitely contact your surgeon. I met with the nurse practitioner who sorted me out. I received IV fluids in the office for dehydration (made me feel a little bit better). I was prescribed the scopolamine patch for nausea which worked 100 times better than the zofran. And they did a CT scan to make sure nothing was wrong with my insides. Nothing was, but it gave me great peace of mind.

There’s no reason to let this go on without a little medical help! For me, the nausea subsided by about day 7 or 8, and I think I only threw up once or twice after the office visit. I could feel I was on the path to mending once I saw them.

Call them right now, and good luck!!!

Mark me down as another semi-immediate coffee drinker.
I have had one 500ml thermos of black coffee every morning since 1 month op. I would sometimes have a smaller second (or third!) cup later in the day/night (but not always).
    I heart coffee.

I am in Australia so brands may differ. Pop into your pharmacy/drug store and tell them what you need and why. Your wounds (if having a VSG) will be uo to 1.5 inches long and you will have up to 6 wounds maximum. I had 5, three tiny, 2 just over an inch long.

Candles or scented oil....ooh yes. That was another one. My amazing husband got me a new Lush vaporiser for Christmas from my stepsons, and some lavendar oils. It really helped me stay calm and settled.

You know what, I actually coped really well with swallowing tablets with a small mouthful of Water. I was really surprised. But the first 2-3 days I didn't take the chance.

I haven't had any pain meds since day 5-6 and today (day 9) feel 100% normal again. I'm sticking to the volumes in my plan, and doing all eating or drinking super slowly. I can't believe how good I feel, how satisfied such small amounts make me feel, how much energy I have, how good my skin looks, etc....I can only stress, have soluble Multi Vitamins as recommended, and believe in the science of it all.

I would love to stay in touch so feel free to message directly if you would like.

By the way, I am having a normal coffee each morning now (I have always had straight black coffee) and am thoroughly enjoying it!
