  1. Hey ya'll, I had gastric bypass yesterday morning, and after I recovered from the anesthesia I could swallow and drink a normal amount of fluids just like I always have, what is going on?! I am worried that maybe they did the sleeve instead of the bypass because the nurses and even the surgeon kept saying 'sleeve' and then I would say, 'no, I should be getting the bypass' and then they'd correct themselves and say they meant bypass. Anyway, I'm just really concerned why I am recovering so fast and able to drink gulps and fit as much fluid as I want, which has been a lot since my mouth has been super dry since I woke up from surgery. I also went vegan recently, which I knew would help with inflammation and my blood vessels and such, but I did not expect to recover so easily and so quickly and it's freaking me out a bit. JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS

Hey ya'll! I searched, and there doesn't seem to be a topic for the June bypassers yet, so I guess I'll start one. I had surgery on Monday the 8th, so 2 days ago. My recovery has been a lot easier than I expected, but I'm really concerned that I'm drinking/swallowing normally and can get down all the fluids I want, which has been a lot since my mouth has been so dry. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting or even any gas pain that I can tell. I do have some discomfort, but am not sure that is gas pain. Anyway, I am just really worried that I my surgeon didn't make my pouch right or something since the fluids are just flowing freely. How are you doing post-op so far? If you haven't had surgery yet this month, then stay tuned because you will likely find these posts helpful once the time comes.
  3. Today I tried to get some protein in again since yesterday didn't go so well. I just did 2 scoops, which was 10 g of protein and it seems to be sticking thank goodness. Yesterday I tried 20 g in 1 drink and it went in one end and out the other. So, each day is making a difference in this healing/transition process this first week.

    JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS

Just try to go through the motions and not think about it. That's what I did and it worked well.

    JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS

Have you tried taking some Gas X yet? I hear that is supposed to be a lifesaver. Each day gets better and better, this first week is the hardest, but we got this!
  6. Well, after feeling like I was doing great on clear liquids and living on vegetable broth, popsicles, and water (cuz I'm vegan) I decided to try some of my clear protein powder since I was feeling kinda hungry. Nope, went right through me. :/ I thought I had this, and now I'm worried about how I'm gonna get any protein in. Guess I need to heal more or something. Ugh, this is such a stressful stage. June 2020 surgeries

Doing great actually. I feel pretty normal today. Just tired mostly. The pain isn't much at all. I've had sprained ankles that were much worse as far as pain goes. And I'm able to drink normally and can take-in as much fluids as I like, which I thought was pretty weird.

Sorry, didn't realize this was for sleeves, I got the bypass. And I can't figure out how to delete my comment.

    June 2020 surgeries

I just had surgery yesterday, yay!
  11. Hey ya'll, my big day is coming on Monday! I am flying to Las Vegas from Montana to do my surgery, a 2 hour direct flight, but I am concerned with when I will be able to come home. Right now I am scheduled to fly back 10 days after surgery, but I would like to make it sooner if possible. I know there are follow-up appointments and such, but I am doing all of that in Montana. The biggest challenge is getting from the Uber car to my airplane seat. I am not sure how long that walk through the airport will be, but how soon will it be doable do you think? I am getting the bypass by the way, which can be a more challenging recovery compared to the sleeve, from what I understand. Thanks so much!
  12. Good to know, thank you! Last time we went to Vegas we drove, but I assumed it would be pretty big. I can walk a mile now just fine, but that is a good point to bring up. Well, I finally found a good place to stay using a site that traveling nurses use to find places, despite the hosts on Airbnb being of no use, so it won't be a problem for me to extend my stay a few days if I don't think I can manage it after 3.5 days. I did get the wheelchair requested though, so I'll just wait and see how I'm feeling. Just hate being away from my partner during this experience and want to get my big butt home lol.
  13. Thanks so much for all the advice! I don't know what I'd do without this forum. I think I'm gonna try and make it on day 3, hopefully I have some pain meds left. My surgery is at 7am on Monday and my flight is at 7pm on Thursday, so about 3.5 days. I think I will just opt to use the wheelchair at the big Vegas airport based on your suggestions. The airport at home is small though, but hopefully landing and turbulence won't be a problem.
  14. Yeah that's true, but I believe it's something I have to arrange ahead of time. Guess it's better to have it and not need it. Thanks for the encouraging words! There are only flights on Thursdays and Sundays, so I will do so either 3 days after surgery, 6 days, or 10 days. Not sure if 3 is doable, but perhaps 6 is.
  15. It has been almost 2 freaking weeks that my surgeon has been waiting on me to decide which surgery I want so that they can go ahead submit to insurance for approval. I can't decide between the bypass and the sleeve! I know all the pros and cons and side effects of both surgeries, but I have been on the fence for the whole process and thought I would know by now. I do not want to just go with the sleeve and fall back on the fact that you can get revision surgery later. I don't ever want a revision and I don't want to waste any more years being unhealthy and miserable. Here's my stats: 44 yo, Caucasian, female, 5'7, 290 lbs, bmi 45, and I have hypothyroidism. I do not have any issues with GERD. I just need to figure out which surgery I can achieve and maintain a healthy weight of around 135 lbs assuming I exercise and eat well. If anyone has stats similar to mine and had surgery, any info on your stats would be helpful. Any advice is appreciated!

    I CAN'T FREAKING DECIDE!

Wow, thank you so, so much for replies! They were super helpful and I have actually made up my mind finally, woo hoo! I have decided to go with the bypass due to my bmi and due to issues with my metabolism being slow from my hypothyroidism, but mostly because I feel I can definitely meet my goal weight and stay at that weight successfully with this surgery. I am new on here, so I really appreciate the thoughts and insights!
