Tampons or Pads.
sooo this is definitely way too much info, but this is the ladies room so what the heck. the only other surgery ive ever had was for this very issue, lol. at my first visit to the gyno, i told my doc that it hurt whenever i tried putting in tampons, so i wanted her to teach me the "right" way to put one in, because i hated having to only use pads. well sure enough, it took her about a second to look at my lady parts and goes "yeah-- no wonder it hurts!" apparently i had an unperforated hymen, meaning your hymen is supposed to naturally perforate and "dissolve" on its own or break sometimes very painfully through strenuous activity or sex.... except that my hymen was just SUPER thick, talk about a chastity belt! apparently its genetic; and i told my mom what the doc said and she was like-- "oh yeah, i had that too. my gyno told me AFTER i had a lot of painful sex" ....haha definitely TMI. but thanks for warning me anyways! sooo i had the surgery (a hymenectomy, which was really easy, but thank god for the drugs because you all know that was like 10X more painful than this surgery) ... the next period I was able to use tampons no problem. i tried going back to pads once and i couldnt, it just felt like wearing a diaper. glad i only learned about my problem through trying tampons by myself, and not the old-fashioned way like my mom!

Anyone know of a good online calorie counter?
i have used it almost every day for the past 8 months! i bookmarked it! the only times i dont add what i eat is when i am out of town usually, but even then i find a way to sneak on a computer, and if i am eating weird foods that aren't on their database (Though they have a LOT, you'd be surprised what you find) i just guesstimate the calories and stuff be sure you write in EVERYTHING you put in your mouth! i find that when i do that, even over-estimate on some things, it causes me to stop eating even more because i dont like going over the pre-set calorie goals. also, it has a graph that shows your weight progression! its great to see that it actually WORKS! some days i feel horrible because i havent lost any weight even though i ate the right number of calories, etc, but when i keep track overall, i found that i am actually losing right along with what the site says i should be! its brilliant!

banded yesterday and feelin just fine!
Well how could your trainer resist checking you out scarecrow, with all the weightlifting you are doing! I'm hoping I can keep it up and build up my strength again. I used to be pretty strong back when i was an athlete! (ha! I quit school sports for choir/theater back in 9th grade. look where that got me...) my other main workout goal is to get a pretty solid running speed. when I did track/field (this was like 8th grade or something) I ran like an 8.5 minute mile at my fastest..... granted this made me the slowest person on the team, but I was just in athletics because they required the volleyball players to join... I did shotput and disc (I was one of like 3 girls with upper body strength.. though thats all but disappeared now) haha yeah he's a mizzou fan. clearly, I said he was smart! but I'm pretty sure he's married and off limits, not like I would ever try anything though. no worries-- he's just there to get me motivated to go to the gym. I also talked to the nutritionist about the blacking out, and she said pretty much exactly what you said! I see a new career in your future....

banded yesterday and feelin just fine!
I guess this is my "update" thread so instead of telling people who ask about me separately I'll just put it in here.. It's long because I guess now I'm using this as my own personal journal, so just read the parts that you want to know about. Today I had my 4 week visits. I met with the personal trainer (physical therapist as far as my insurance company knows... haha I love my hospital), then I met with my surgeon and adjustment nurse, and then the dietician. Personal Trainer-- I love going to work out with this guy because (a) he's really smart, so I can trust that he's telling me the right things to do for my body... but ( more importantly HE IS REALLY HOT! haha i tell myself that he is totally checking out my butt when I'm doing squats and lunges and stuff (cmon, I've got a cute butt in these workout pants) so I guess that's motivating me to work harder! haha no but really, I push myself a lot more with him than I do working out by myself. Today I may have pushed myself too hard, he kept telling me that this 96 year old woman he works with could lift more weight/walk faster/do more pushups than me. I pushed myself so hard that I nearly blacked out when I was doing backward lunges and he had to come catch me! Totally romantic in the movies but so embarrassing in real life, haha. I also almost blacked out again in the locker room too! Which is really weird for me, because I never get like that, ever. I had to sit down for a bit and was late to my adjustment appointment. woops! anyways, he does tests with me every time, like there is one physical test so he can see how fast I can walk (that speedwalking at the olympics is harder than it looks!) The last time we met was 20 pounds ago, and I walked 1900 feet in six minutes and my heart rate was 170. This time, I walked 2000 feet in six minutes and my heart rate was 150! So basically, in the last six weeks I upped my speed a little and my heart was working less hard to do it. Fill Nurse/Surgeon - This was my first time really meeting the fill nurse, Tina. She is so awesome! My surgeon came in to check on me and goes "wow you've really lost weight haven't you!?" I go, "oh you tell that to all your patients," and of course he was like, yeah, actually I do, that's why I'm a good surgeon. (He was just nominated for a "top docs" award at the magazine I work for) Anyways, needles have never been a big deal for me at all so that didn't hurt. She said there were 5ccs in my band already though? So she just added 1 more cc since I told her I had healed about 3 weeks ago. It was definitely a strange experience though! I could totally feel the saline going in through the tube, I guess because it was so cold. Nothing exciting happened with the dietician. She said I've been doing well and while for the rest of the day should stick to full liquids, starting tomorrow I can go back to "testing" foods and eating solids. Alright! That's all I've got to update. I'm going to be soooo sore tomorrow from my personal trainer.. I can already feel it, since I haven't worked out that hard since before surgery. My legs and arms are like spaghetti!

CONFESSION TIME..spill it
haha no, plain, she's not bulimic, just lucky. we share a bathroom and that bathroom is connected to my bedroom wall, so i (unfortunately) hear practically everything that goes on in there... haha congrats to those of you here who have reached that size 6 through your hard work and counting calories! i hope to be there one day too, and borrow all my roommates dresses... hehe. one of my other roommates is a size ZERO! but she looks like she could be 10 years old and gets harassed by the bouncers at bars even though she's 21... no thanks, I'll stick to my goal of size 6/8. one day the weight may come on one or both of them and never fall off... and who knows, maybe they will be looking into the lapband one day and seek out my advice. i really hope they can manage their weight without it coming to surgery, but a part of me would like them to see for once what life is like for us!

Surgery Postponed
ohhh no... my heart sunk for you when i saw the title to this thread.. :blushing: i always like to look on the bright side of things, so here's what i thought of: -think of all the weight you could lose on your OWN on this long pre-op diet! plenty of people do this diet for 3 weeks... so can YOU! -you got to do a test run of your surgery. next time you'll know what to expect -well... at least you are getting your yeast infection cleared up. this reminded me of the grossest joke i have ever heard in my entire life (but so appropriate): what do you call an anorexic girl with a yeast infection? .....a quarter pounder with cheese! ahahaha ahhhhh okay hopefully that cheered you up, even for just a second. chin up! dec. 23 will be here in no time!

Getting Banded in the Morning!
well lets see i had my surgery early on a thursday morning, and i believe i stopped taking the pain pills saturday so i was ok to drive by sunday. i couldnt sit in a chair for very long though.. not atleast until about a week later. i took a test on saturday at noon that lasted 1.5 hours and i had to take a break halfway through so i could stand up.. i was totally back to normal by 10 days though. it kind of hurt to sleep on my side for the first few days, and thats how i always sleep, so i wasnt sleeping normal until maybe a week later. but now i dont feel any pain when im going to sleep, i was just never much of a normal sleeper!

Getting Banded in the Morning!

GOOD LUCK with your surgery monday! hopefully it will be a breeze!

CONFESSION TIME..spill it
oh man, I can't wait for my day to come! Except for the ex I am thinking of, I'm hoping I will skip the reconnecting and doing breakfast thing and instead slap him across the face like I should have done many, many times before for the way he treated me! okay.... now for my confession time: My size 6 (sometimes 3/4) roommate pisses me off with her eating habits. She has a perfect figure and all day everyday she eats unhealthy food. Here's what she ate today: two big bowls of some fruity kids Cereal, a big serving of hamburger helper, and a chipotle burrito for dinner. plus yesterday she practically forced me to bake Cookies with her! She ate like 2 cookies today, but I've had like 4 or 5! I finally called her out on it, telling her i've tried really hard to eat only healthy foods and have resisted eating along with her when she eats bad things, but we absolutely can NOT have cookies in the house! she just reminded me that it will catch up to her when she turns 40. i told her outloud i hope that doesnt happen, but i secretly hope it DOES! and that's horrible to think-- but she needs to start thinking about what shes putting in her body! (plus-- it just pisses me off that she can eat worse than me but still be skinny. )

Teen Minors?
yeah its totally worth the wait, so don't get discouraged! I first looked into the band when I turned 18, so I didn't ever have to look for a doctor who would do the surgery on a minor... but I didn't get banded until last month, 2.5 years later at age 20. Looking back, of course I wish I had decided to go through with it at 18, because I have lost almost 30 pounds in the pre-op and since surgery, and I am like 5 pounds away from the weight I was when I first looked into the surgery (and the weight I was when I first started college.. ugh). But it wasn't the right time for me, mentally, and waiting so long actually helped to prepare me for this lifelong journey. If I had come to college at a lower weight, who knows what would have been different. im guessing i probably would have done worse in my classes, had a different set of friends, but probably would have dated more guys than i did. But at least I know now that the friends I have and the guys I dated liked me, just for being me. There are pros and cons to everything. Good luck to everyone on their journey!

Holy pre-op diet BATMAN!!
AWESOME JOB!! You are kicking ass and taking names with your pre-op diet. It definitely does get a lot easier the last half of the diet, since your stomach is so much more used to eating less. If only I could start losing again, now.... haha. First fill in two weeks! Couldn't come sooner!

Binge Drinking = Bad. Really, really bad.
what! thats crazy! my 6th grade teacher would have told us alcohol was an abomination.. well, that changed a few years later i guess. her daughter is one of my good friends and senior year of high school i went over to her house, and there was my 6th grade teacher, drunk and walking around in her underwear. mind blowing.

Binge Drinking = Bad. Really, really bad.
i've been drinking socially since i was about 16, and proud to say i've never thrown up from it (well, except for that one time when we had really gross mexican food afterwards, but i'll always blame it on the food) .... i have been a little nervous approaching drinking now that i'm banded. i guess we'll see how i do... hopefully i'll have my body figured out by the time i have my 21st birthday in march! my 110 pound 5 foot 4 roommate did 21 shots in 21 hours... i have a feeling i'll be getting a lot of pressure to drink a lot because of that...

How did everyone do at Thanksgiving?
yeah, my thanksgiving was a little lonely too but today i am alright with that! because i just had my surgery too, my mom and step-dad flew up to be with me this week instead of the usual all of the kids flying or driving home to meet at their house. but i couldn't sit with them at dinner-- it would have been too hard! while they ate a delicious thanksgiving feast at the hotel they are staying at, i went to my apartment and watched the john and kate plus 8 marathon on TLC. i watched it for like.... 5 hours! but they are soooooo cute, so i didn't really mind. after they finished eating they brought me up a taste of mashed potatoes that i can handle, but i definitely got VERY full off of that. mostly i just stuck to my Protein supplement all day. i don't think i lost any weight, but i DEFINITELY didn't gain any! next year will be better... and even if i don't eat that much at least i will be thinner! :w00t:

PLEASE Someone email my daughter!!!
please let your daughter know about the twenties thread on this forum! it is probably one of only 3 places i visit on this forum regularly, but it is sooo nice to talk with people my age going through the same things. i am 20, and there are a lot of people there 18-26ish so we all can kind of relate with a lot of things. it looks like she has been emailed by a few people so i don't want to bombard her with emails, lol. now that she has gotten a few hopefully she will come to the site and see how helpful it is. if you would still like me to email her, let me know and i can. i started out wanting to be all anonymous and alone but i really got into it after a few months, pictures and weight updates and all. it really helps to know people have got your back. please let her know she is welcome to come find me on here! or i can find her! and feel free to private message me if you two need anything. you sound like you are a good mom, by the way! i always complain to my mom that she is hovering too much or that she needs to let me be independent... but secretly deep down i really like it. shhh.. don't tell my mom! i hear she reads this site too! (hi mom!)

banded yesterday and feelin just fine!
thanks scarecrow! yeah, before surgery i was able to find the most AMAZING Protein supplement in the world, jay robb's whey protein isolates (chocolate or vanilla), but he also makes a soy protein version so i think i will try that next! i could only find it at one grocery store in town, but they also sell it online if that store stops keeping it in stock. but seriously, it tastes sooo good, the vanilla mixed with sf vanilla pudding and a little skim milk tastes like cake batter... the chocolate mixed with sf choc pudding tastes like brownie batter! haha and the best part is the nutrition value! i had to bring it in to my nutritionist to check it out because i just couldn't believe that something could taste so good yet be so good for you. 25g of protein a scoop, so before surgery i was getting in like 70-80g of protein a day and now i am getting in about 50g of protein a day. (though i struggle some days-- it just makes me so full! but i really am trying on this one). and thank you SO much for the advice on the scars! they still have the steri-strips on, barely, because the doc said to just take them off after ten days if they haven't fallen off on their own. it's been 8 days. they are starting to scab over which is good... but sometimes it just gets sooo ichy! i scratch around them but never on them. i have a bad habit of picking at things so i will do my best to stay AWAY from them! except for when i wash them every day with regular soap and Water when im in the shower.... im guessing that's ok to do. thanks so much for all the advice!

how do you eat around your friends?
hey banded twenties... I'm just curious. My doctor and his nurses keep talking about how it's different for people our age to be banded because we get a lot more peer pressure to eat, drink, etc. So far I haven't encountered any problems eating because everyone is home for Thanksgiving break. But that is changing pretty soon. I know I can avoid going out to eat for a while, but eventually someone will wonder what's up... birthday dinners, tailgates, lunch with a friend between classes, parties, dinner dates (heh- few and far between), winter/spring/summer break vacations.... all of these include social eating or drinking events and I wasn't planning on cutting them out of my life completely! Any tips here? How do you hide eating and drinking in moderation when people are used to the old you? Has anyone had any problems (someone saying something, pressuring you, etc) and how did you deal with it?

Openly Disgusting - Why Lose Weight?
jachut, you shouldn't have to say "only" a 36 BMI. everyone has a different perception of what they feel is beautiful. heck, im at a 35-36 bmi now and i KNOW i'm pretty but i also KNOW i am fat! at a 35 bmi you are clinically obese and therefore had just as much a right to this surgery as someone with a higher weight. i didn't have any health problems but, then again, i had a 40 BMI at age 20... and plan on having kids one day. I could tell myself all I want, but I knew 20, 30, 40 years later I wouldn't magically be thin with just dieting and exercise alone.... and would likely have serious health problems at that. i cant tell you how many people told me they wish they had the surgery BEFORE they had health problems.
