Why do so many sleevers get GERD?

I had no digestive issues whatsoever before getting the sleeve. Now I have GERD and it so much worse than just some heartburn. It has recently become unbearable and something I think about almost constantly. My surgeon now tells me how common GERD is after the sleeve. So, I don't know about statistics, where they come from, or how accurate they are but it most definitely happens and it is something to be seriously concerned about.

    I am concerned

I have the same thing. I believe it's a symptom of GERD. I sometimes feel like food is coming back up my throat even though it's been hours since I've had any. I also get jaw pain and even tooth pain. Do you get any of this?
  3. I'm interested to know how this goes for you. I also have GERD with the sleeve & it is so much worse than just heartburn. I only had my sleeve done in November, but I'm already wondering if I'll have to do a revision to get rid of these awful symptoms. You're looking great ! I hope your new surgery is a success!
  4. I had my sleeve done in Tijuana in November 2019. I know of couple of people in my town who have also gone there and had no issues. Unfortunately, I'm having issues with GERD and it's become unbearable. I reached out to one of the Dr.'s on my surgeon's team and am not feeling very hopeful about any aftercare! She said what I'm experiencing is common and to try some stronger medication but also told me to go have an endoscopy done and send her the results - as if I can walk in anywhere and get an endoscopy. I asked her if I could travel there to have the endoscopy done and she said I could make an appt. with a gastroenterologist but said nothing of coming to their clinic. Absolutely, I want to see the surgeon or his associate who performed my surgery if I'm having issues from the surgery - that makes the most sense to me. I'm wishing I would have researched this in greater detail before having this done.
  5. That's wonderful! Happy to hear that - thank you so much for answering my questions 😊
  6. I also had band first and now VSG. The GERD I'm experiencing sometimes feels unbearable. I often feel like I have food coming back up even though it's been over 12 hours since eating. I also don't want to have the bypass. Did it at least solve your stomach pain problems?
  7. Did you ever get this problem corrected?
  8. It's a much rougher journey than with the lap band. I'm finally getting my energy back but still struggling with acid reflux. I have to be very careful not to eat too much - I don't really get any "full" signals until I've overdone it and then I have 20 to 30 minutes of agony 😩. You sure are doing well with your weight loss!
  9. It's going! I've definitely had ups and downs. I struggle with acid reflux - REALLY hoping it's temporary. I'm getting better at deciding when I've had enough to eat which is hard for me to tell until I've had too much. I've learned if I overeat I get really nauseous. I guess things are slowly getting better. Now if the weight will fall of I'll be great
  10. I had surgery on 11/22/2019 weighing 207 lbs. (down from 220 with pre-op diet). I am currently at 192 lbs. and seem to have hit a stall the last couple of weeks. I've had issues since the first week experiencing all sorts of not-so-fun stuff. I had major acid reflux for about 2 weeks solid which I'm happy to say has eased up to only occasionally. I also have been experiencing a strange type of stomach pain in the middle of the night which wakes me up. It feels as if my stomach is contracting and the pain shoots all the way up to my top left molar. I know it sounds weird but I only get this toothache when I'm having this strange stomach pain. Eating is getting a little better but I have to be very careful as I find it easy to overeat without realizing it which causes me extreme nausea. My energy levels have been very low but I can say these are improving. I can deal with the side effects of surgery as long as i know they're not serious and will go away with time. Anybody else having some issues?
  11. I got my lap band in 2006 and had great success losing over 100 lbs. I stayed around 140 lbs. for many years until I began having problems aspirating at night in 2016. I had my fill removed and I believe that caused the band to slip because I started having even more problems such as gastroparesis. I decided to have the band removed in 2017 - I had already gained about 30 lbs. when I quit smoking earlier that year and believed my weight had stabilized. Long story short, over the next 2 years I gained another 50 lbs for a total of 70 lbs. (BMI 32) I had lap band to sleeve revision surgery in Nov 2019 and self-paid by going to Tijuana for surgery.
