KayLow42 got a reaction from Nicki100 in Reactive Hypoglycemia
    Hi all!

I am 18 months post gastric bypass. The experience has been great and I have not had any complications. My biggest issue is reactive hypoglycemia. When I eat too much sugar and/or carbs, my blood sugar tanks about an hour after. Does anyone else struggle with this? Any tips or tricks to better manage? I know it is completely diet related.

Take the pre-op time very seriously to learn and practice. Make sure to address your food issues before you have surgery to make sure you can overcome them. Just take the pre-op seriously and do the work. It will make post-op work so much easier.

I read this comment and didn’t realize until I read this that this is my same scenario. I was very scared and when I went into the surgery and during recovery and the first three months I was depressed and had given up everything I had ever eaten. But slowly I have tried things and realized that I can have almost everything I had pre surgery. Which for some people (as I’ve read) can’t but I am thankful I can as I am aiming to live a balanced life and have a healthy relationship with food. I have found that because I can have all food I have started counseling to deal with my food issues because now, more than ever, I need to learn how to have a balanced and healthy relationship. But knowing I HAVE to hit a Protein and Water goal has been very nice in helping me. Thanks for writing this reply! I am glad to know other people feel this way in that all the research and horror stories do not happen to everyone and that you can live a balanced life with gastric bypass.

I wish I would have known that having gastric bypass really wasn't going to be anything like I thought it would be. My journey has been very different than the youtube videos I binged watched and it's been significantly easier than I thought. Easy is probably not the right word, but problem free. Basically I can eat anything, nothing makes me sick except maybe eggs and sometimes anything with too much oil like salmon. I have only experienced dumping in terms of a rapid heartbeat with upset stomach but NOTHING like I read about. I am almost 1.5 years out and have never thrown up, not once. I can eat steak, rice, Pasta, bread, no problem. I just dont have any of the scary problems I read about. So if I would have known I would have done it 10 years ago!! I had severe acid reflux before the surgery and NONE after. So yes it's been the best thing I ever did for myself. As far as skin, sure you'll have saggy skin but it sure as hell beats being 100 pounds overweight.

KayLow42 got a reaction from GreenTealael in Constipation- 5 Months
    Hello all!

Hoping you can give some advice. I am 5 months post-op from gastric bypass. I regularly meet or exceed my Protein and Water goals (70 ounces protein and 50 ounces water) and am semi-active, but am still dealing with bad Constipation. I was taking Miralax daily and that was helping but I had right side pain constantly and when I stopped the miralax the side pain stopped as well. Welllllll- I definitely should have replaced the miralax with something because I landed in the ER today for fecal compaction. I’ve tried Smooth Move and love it but it gives me stomach cramping when going. Also have tried docusate.

    My questions for you are:

    1. Has anyone experienced right abdominal/side pain with consistently taking miralax? If so- any way to still take it without the pain?
    2. Has anyone found success to help have normal bowel movements with anything other than above?

I meet with my PCP next week but she is so hesitant to do anything for me or offer any advice I want to go to the appointment with a plan of action.

    Thank you in advance!

I feel much better today. The sick feeling only lasted for about an hour but it was still pretty terrible. I’m sticking with fair life milk for now and not trying anymore dairy-based products for a while. I’ve done well with Refried Beans, prunes, butternut squash Soup and eggs. I tried turkey sausage a couple of times and I understand the feeling of “cement” in my tummy so that’s something I can’t handle yet. It’s trial and error at this point. I don’t like the error part.

Sorry, @GreenTealael, thoughts and prayers are not enough, I want peer-reviewed, evidence-based science.

My husband had weight loss surgery in Portland with OWL. We lived two hours south at the time. He had to drive up many times to do it. They also do not give adequate pre-surgery counseling or follow-up. I would not recommend them because of this. The surgeon is great and the process moves quickly, but compared to my program, they did not provide adequate pre surgery education which has led to his surgery and efforts being less successful than mine.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. I can imagine that you are just ready to get back to any sense of normalcy. Complications are so hard and this sounds very extreme. I hope you find some normalcy soon 🙏🏽

Yesterday was my 1st day back to work, felt pretty good to get back to normal. Except my family ended up with the flu Sunday/Monday, except me...spent 3.5 hours in urgent care Monday evening and didn't get home till almost 9pm. Other than that excitement, my first day back was pretty chill.
