you are allowed to scream, you are allowed to cry, you are even allowed to question why., But the one thing you are not allowed to do is Give Up, do,t,look behi,d you are no longer going that way. Even if your steps seem to falter, have faith in yourself, be gentle , be sure kind to yourself as you heal. Day by day you will get stronger, you will find your strength as your life starts to,balance out. And be,proud of how far you have come already. and those foundations will help you in your post-surgery life. Up i can do it , my friendc you can really do it and do it well. God Bless.

Me, me, meeeeee! Hands up in the air, count me in. I have been lurking for some months, but I am so very ready, and excited, and nervous all at the same time. I am very much ready to take control of my health, and I hope my bypass will help to kick the diabetes in the process.

The reason I felt I HAD to do the Roux n Y full by pass was to heal my body of the effects of my acid reflux. From the first seminar at the hospital I had my surgery at( given by the surgeon who actually operated ) I learned that the full by pass gave me the best odds to lose the most weight AND heal the GERD that wrecked havoc on my insides for way too long.. I know many people who had great success with the sleeve but my surgeon was adamant it could increase my acid.. everyone must follow their own path.. since Feb. 4, 2019 , I’ve lost 52 lbs( 12 pre op from liver shrinking protocol diet) and NO ACID REFLUX .

5"2 here, 6 months post bypass, now 156, lost 50 lbs (began at 220-ish) in the first 4 months. I lost it scary fast and have problems with alopecia now. I've had a hell of a time this past month losing which has been attributed to my body knowing this weight from the past. I have gained a lot of muscle though. I work out 5 times a week with 4 of those being with a trainer. I think everyone's journey is different.

I have Cigna and I was under the impression that the DS surgery is not covered by Cigna at this time (or wasn’t last year when I had the sleeve).

Hi! I've been lurking without creating an account and when I saw this little June group I decided it was time to join!
I had my first meeting with a Dr on Jan 7th, went right into nutrition appts on Jan 17th and it was kind of a whirlwind after that with tests one after the other: Upper GI, EKG, stress test, ECG, sleep study...etc. I was cleared by all of the Dr's. The only thing wrong was sleep apnea, which was a bit of a surprise, so I've been using a CPAP machine since the end of March. I was cleared by nutrition in March after having lost 5% of my starting weight (part of my program instead of a liquid pre-op diet) and met with my surgeon last Friday to go over everything and sign consents. That made things more real! I'm awaiting surgery approval from insurance but don't expect any issues. My surgery date is June 17th!
I also love the Baritastic app! It definitely keeps me on track.

An accurate kitchen scale. I had one I had been using for months and the day before surgery it started acting wonky. Just needed a new battery but it hadn't been on my radar and I had to send my hubs on a battery hunt the day after I got home.

@catwoman7 thanks for explaining some of the things you did pre-surgery and how they helped; and well done on your weight loss .... it's really helping reading a little of others experiences
@GradyCat congratulations on the weight you've lost since surgery; and that's so encouraging to read that the surgery has helped you with the emotional eating as well; and to know i'm not alone in wondering regarding the hunger compared to emotional eating issue. Thanks for what you've shared
@Orchids&Dragons thanks very much for your reply here. Definitely not something to do as a first option. i've done the loss, maintain, regain thing ........ a number of times. I've read some of the stories of sabotage after wls, and this is definitely something i want avoid, and to try and sort through before the surgery and find ways to reduce that happening. So working on my head, and finding new coping tools; that will then help with the surgery (as another tool) seems to be the direction I need to be taking

vovo2013 reacted to Violet P in Considering DS
II am a Gastric Bypass 7 yrs out. I personally give serious consideration to long term commitment to suppliementing, at least twice yearly labs, possible Vitamin deficiencies before doing DS. I would never do DS at your weight. With my bypass, I absorb about 60% of what I eat. With the DS, it will be even more drastic. As far as I know, it is irreversible. However, if you want I would do rny bypass, which I have. At 7 yrs out, I have developed issues flip side - absolutely no appetite, terrible labs, losing too much weight, getting a little scary. On Vit B12 injections, having Iron infusions, Vit D Supplementation, seeing a hematologist. Make sure you know what you are getting into! Can also have higher risks of complications from DS. I know you're desperate to lose the weight. You might want to consider the gastric balloon. Not permanent, but definitely better than the lapband. The balloon is guided into your stomach. Gives you a sense of fullness. Can be replaced after 6 months. Just know if you do the DS, you will have to do high supplementation for the rest of your life, which can be quite expensive. Also, you have to have a very balanced diet. Can have issues with serious dumping syndrome, all kinds of things. Hope this is helpful...do your research before doing any permanent surgery. No way would I do the DS.

Let me preface this by saying that this conversation is better handled between you and your doctor.
To answer your question about which is better, that's entirely based on individual situation.
There is some evidence to suggest that the sleeve can make pre-existing GERD worse. However, there's also some evidence that this link is negligible. Regardless, you will find some doctors who refuse to sleeve a patient with pre-existing GERD. You will also find sleeved patients who develop GERD being revised to RNY to treat the GERD.
I can only speak from my personal experience. I had GERD before I was sleeved. I had it with lap band and off/on after I had the lap band removed. For personal reasons, I did not want to even consider RNY. So, I had a frank discussion with my doctor about the likelihood of GERD after sleeve. He felt that my GERD was "situational", meaning that my lifestyle and state of obesity contributed to it and its exacerbation. He and I were willing to take the chance of post-sleeve GERD and so we proceeded.
About 6 weeks after my sleeve surgery, I started having heartburn. We immediately implemented PPI's (Nexium), which took care of the heartburn and I thought I was in the clear. Life was good as long as I took my Nexium. About 6 months after surgery, I started noticing that I'd wake up with sore throat like I'd had a runny nose all night. If I ate too late, I'd be awakened by reflux (not choking or anything, but I could feel the stomach contents moving up towards my throat. Gross, I know, but it's the honest truth). I tried all of the GERD recommendations (no eating after 7, avoid certain foods, sleep with head elevated) and some not so common ones like DGL, sea buckthorn, and something called "Swedish Bitters". Everything helped, but didn't really solve the issue. I'm now seeing a gastroenterologist and we'll see where that takes me.

Pain is not too bad now. I don't take anything during the day, but fond that at night I'm more sensitive to it, and I take one pain pill at bedtime. They kept up with the pain and nausea meds in the hospital so it wad ok then, too. I was in the hospital for 2 nights. During the time before the surgery I also bought things from Amazon like bariatric sized utensils, small, really small tupperware type containers, a food scale. The time will go quickly and you'll soon be on the losers bench!!
