I also think that the people who see us day to day are so used to us being large, that when we are a bit smaller it looks like we're tiny to them. I've had the OMG are you sick comments - because my surgery was in the winter when everyone hibernates around here and my neighbours hadn't really seen me for months. The truth is that I'm only *just* out of the Obese BMI and into the Overweight category - but people the same height as me but 20+ lbs lighter think I look too thin! Bizarre.
I'm going home to Ireland for my yearly visit in 2 weeks, and no one there has seen me since last summer, waaaay pre-op. I'm readying myself for the onslaught.

In America, something like 60% of us are overweight or obese. People just don’t know what people look like at a normal weight. If you haven’t told people about your wls then I wouldn’t be surprised if they imagine something is wrong. Finally, some people may be rude because they are a bit jealous but won’t say so. My best friend, when I told her I was having wls, said “oh no, you’re going to look hot and I’m still gonna look like this!” I appreciate her honesty, and I know to be sensitive around her, and others who share our struggle with weight or body image. Try not to let people’s comments and insecurities get you down. You’re doing this for you, so enjoy it! Maybe just respond with “You’re right, I have lost a lot of weight! It’s weird seeing me at a healthy size, right?”

Last time I thought about it, you needed a BMI of 40 and I was "only" 38. Also, the lap band was all the rage and I didn't like the sound of that. Fast Forward about 10 years and I was struggling as a member of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly - just accountability and support, you do your own diet), and one of the group members, who was 80lbs more than me, announced that she was getting the gastric bypass and I thought "good for her". My mother, also a member with just a 20-lb post-menopausal weight issue, asked if I'd ever considered it. I thought about my 28-year struggle, how I'd lose 15 and gain 20, lose 30 and gain 40, etc...and thought of those adages, "If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you always got" and "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". Well I didn't see the point in waiting until I was 300+ lbs, and that's where I was heading...plus my 49th birthday was just 2 weeks away...I was very clear in my choice.
In the 10-week interim between the decision and the surgery, there were countless reinforcement moments that I was doing the right thing. My 5yo niece pointing at an old picture of me at 160 and saying she wanted me to look like that. A 9hr flight to London on British Airways, notorious for their narrow seats. Having a nasty drunk homelessman in England shout "Hey you, Fat C***!" to my face. Walking a whole mile out of necessity for the first time in years and wishing melodramatically for the sweet embrace of death (in my defense, the walk was very up-hilly). Getting my third round of cortisone injections in my knees and finding they weren't doing a great job anymore.

I thought I was the only one that felt this way. I can literally eat, feel full but then under/below/behind that feeling is the sense that I am still hungry and growling/pain sensations. I usually just try to ignore it except when I first wake up because then it is unbearable.

So, I've graduated to soft-foods. Has anyone had the sense of eating, being full, and simultaneously feeling hunger pangs (not head hunger, actual hunger pangs?) It feels like I have a pouch which is working, and then a stomach below it, which is whining and raising holy hell at the same time. What's this about? Geesh.

Today I barely scrambled 1 XL egg and could only handle half of it within a 20min setting. It was an interesting experience.

It tasted amazing but I was super careful to take the tiniest bites and chew like crazy. I also have been lucky with a smooth recovery and likely less swelling than some experience.

My docter wanted me to do liquids for 1 month then pureed for 2months then soft food for a month. I went rogue at 3 weeks and started pureed for a week then moved to soft food a week later...

@Ren951 Also remember, just because the calendar says it's time to move on to the next phase doesn't mean your stomach is ready. You may have to stay in a phase longer than planned because your stomach is ultimately the boss!

I had my surgery on the 24th. It has now been 2 weeks. My weight is sooooo weird. I was expecting it to just come flying off. I lost 5 lbs and got down to 239 but then today I weighed myself and i was back up to 243.4. I have been so confused and just down about it all day. I am doing my liquid diet. I don't know what I am doing wrong. My doctor wants me to get 64 ounces of liquids a day. I have been doing so happily but not sure about it. I did have diabetes type 2 before the surgery but my sugar has been staying between 90 and 115. Could it be the diabetes, insulin not kicking in or something. This surgery was way too important to me for this to be happening. It just makes me feel like I am failing. Sorry if I sound like I am complaining because I don't mean it that way at all. I am just extremely concerned. I go to my first post op visit tomorrow. Thank you for any help!

In the beginning, your weight can fluctuate wildly. Some doctors tell their patients not to weigh for the first month because it can be so distressing. Just stay the course and know that your weight on any individual day will not control the rest of your life. You'll be successful if you keep on like you are. Just give yourself some breathing room. It'll be ok.

    Hi Brian,
Check out this site I just found.
    https://bariatricbits.com/bariatricnutrition/recipes/
Also, There is a YouTube channel called "timetoshrink" that has some really good recipes. Ricotta Bake, pureed Spinach and Artichoke dip, pureed Egg salad, Sweet Potato Puree, Buffalo chicken Dip Puree, Broccoli cheese Soup Puree, Refried Beans, Cottage cheese, and Mashed Potatoes thinned out with broth or low sodium gravy.
    - On that channel the Buffalo chicken Dip Puree looks killer good

I have my one-week appointment tomorrow and move to full liquids for a week. I'm a little worried that I've only lost 5 lbs and still feel a bit bloated, hopefully they can shed some light on that. Otherwise, I've taken well to the sleeve - no vomiting, diarrhea, Constipation, problem with liquids, etc. If I hadn't seen the x-ray from the barium swallow showing me the tiny little sleeve between esophagus and small intestine, I would, like @Fara Jacobson, wonder if I'd had much of a reduction in stomach size. I suspect the real challenge kicks in with solids.

I have a pair of very old gap jeans and a boho top from back in the day.. last time I rocked those babies I was listening to Joni Mitchell on a Saturday, no kids around ... cup of tea and some incense..I’m a few pounds away from wearing them and recreating that moment but, it’s coming soon !! It sounds like a minuscule goal but the last time I felt really peaceful and healthy was that day and I’m starting to feel the old me coming back and I miss her!
