Krestel got a reaction from Ikram in How to start?
Even if you are looking into WLS (and I totally agree with the list above), let me suggest one thing you can do already starting now. Keep a food journal! It doesnt have to be detailed but should just be something for yourself of what you eat and when you eat it. This is THE best first step that I did on this journey and everyone can do it. It also showed my doctor that I was serious about the process and showed me where my weak spots were. I started this as a New Years Resolution two years ago and am still doing it.

After my last post, people asked for photos, so here's a photo of me from around my top weight of 485 or so wearing 60" waist pants. The newer photo I took today where I am wearing a 32" waist.

The bottom line is that this is a life long journey with a very short window of "quick" weight loss. And you only have one golden shot at it. Because revisions are not usually as "easy-ish" as the first time. So you do you, Boo.
But I think for you to be so categoricaly mis-aligned with your doc/RD that it's going to make your journey difficult and the sad thing is you will likely give up going to your check-ups etc. Which could spell disaster for you long term and regain in your future. So like, why have it at all? Or why have it with them.
There are docs/centers who espouse a WFPD for all their surgical patients. Look one of them up and make the transition now.
I will also tell you that I DO have a bias. I am pro-low carb and pro-lower healthy fat for the quickest losses and maintenance is done by adding healthy fats rather than adding Protein or more fast acting carbs. I would have never gotten to my goal nor been maintaining had I been eating the grains and lots of fruit. I wouldn't. I have too many metabolic strikes against me.
And not that it can't be done, but I think the life of a vegan or vegetarian WLS patient is very hard. The ones I know of in real life have either not gotten to goal ever or they have suffered big time regain.
But I do know of a couple of women here who are very successful following a WFPD. But, they are also endurance athletes and as such, they're as much outliers as I am...
I encourage you to look at other bariatric teams who are more closely aligned with your belief system. Studies show that long term success is directly linked to after care by a team of bari pros.

When I have issues that never seem to resolve with phone calls or messages, I drive to the office and sit there until I can talk to someone who will give me answers. Somehow things seem to get resolved a lot faster when there is a polite face-to-face conversation.

Being able to breathe while putting on shoes feels really good!
...and I cant wait until I can get back to real sports as well. Even though im 47, Im finally able to get that foot surgery that ended me playing volleyball in college. Although I suspect that I will have to get a breast reduction to ever play again. Having a G+ cup isnt cuting it for running or dives etc.
Btw, the looking at the mirror thing is a bit difficult, so dont get down on yourself when you lose weight over it. Ive lost more than 100 lbs and I still cant really "see" any difference in myself. I can manage to look at myself in the mirror without feeling immediate depression, but it's only my clothes size that tells me Ive lost weight. Im a year out (and 7 months post-op) and can only start to see any changes now. Not because there arnt any, but because my mind cant wrap itself around it. Oddly enough my body remembers feeling lighter and wants to go back to sports, but my lungs still havnt caught up.

Krestel got a reaction from kg2519 in Did anyone go crazy before pre op diet started?
I started soft pre-op diet approx a month before surgery. I did one Meal Replacement shake for breakfast and one for lunch then had a smaller meal for dinner (usually chicken, some steamed vegetable and a side sallad) and a small snack in the evening. I also drank Protein Shakes since I found one that I really like. (It tastes like milk without the fatty consistency.)
Actually, I was very glad I did this. It proved to me that I could eat this way and feel like im living a full life.

I understand the temptation and actually feeling that way..let's see you are 16 days out from surgery, is that correct?
I was...a bit stunned during my first month that barely anything happened (my DEFINITE interpretation at the time and the first 2 weeks weight loss was from all I had been given to understand and yes..comparing myself against others....was so so little.
I called my surgeon's office and talked to him and the nutritionist. They told me repeatedly something I had not seen here before (not that it might not have been said many times by others) but they told me DESPITE what I have found on many forums, they have done this for well more than a decade and that directly post-op, whether you were on IV fluids for 1 day, 2 days or more..or even NONE, that MANY people do not start hitting their body's full potential for weight loss until after they have HEALED which would be 6 weeks for RNY - unsure what it is for sleeve..maybe the same.
I, however, felt after haunting WLS forums for 3 years PRIOR to surgery, that while I knew my doctor was very good, they simply HAD TO BE WRONG....I mean...I read how many hundreds of post of all of these people losing at LEAST 10 lbs a month. I thought I was 'oh so careful' to only compare my weight loss against other women...around the same age...and who had additional metabolic challenges (whether it be from medications, illnesses, PCOS, thyroid, etc.).....so I thought sensibly...I'm not comparing myself against a 'young man' or even a young woman.
I finally quit looking at some of the posts, I sought out my surgery siblings more..the ones who had a slightly slower weight loss...I read some of the threads from the vets and basically white-knuckled my way thru month 1, month 2.
Flash forward to now...6 months out as of 3 days ago and I started posting on this thread. In working with some of the vets when I posted here, we have looked at my total weight loss since surgery and then averaged it out and my monthly weight loss at SIX MONTHS is 12.6 lbs a month! If you had told me in Months 1 or 2...like my poor doctor tried to tell me...that things would WORK THEMSELVES out if I just stuck to it, I'd be leery...and that indeed was what I was told. Ironically in week 8, 2 weeks after 'you are healed by now' date, my weight loss kicked up higher.
Some of my fellow siblings or ppl who had surgery in the late summer, early fall...the ones who lost a lot in month 1, oh how i remember that month, are starting to slow down a bit (nothing to be worried about)...some are now hitting 10 lbs a month consistently (and hey, I literally AM losing roughly 12 lbs a month and that is NOT with just averaging).
Please hang in there...be kind to yourself and your body...it is literally still healing. The surgery is a big one and your body has been shaken up. You are a rockstar with the working out! I truly admire that. If you hang in there, the weight will come off and it won't remain in single digits.
If it helps, even though you are on liquids, post what you are drinking, overall calories, etc. but again, the first month after surgery is really really rough on your body even if you feel 'ok'. My calories for the first month were 450 or less..some days 100, some days 200-250. Your body has to settle itself out so some of us do not see that gigantic loss in the first month and we think it is for nothing. It WILL COME OFF. With your level of exercise, and knowing what month 1 is like...I promise it WILL COME OFF if you are working your plan.

    Looking forward to:
    - being able to see past my boobs and belly
-tying my shoes and breathing at the same time
-having my arms out in the summer (I always hiding them in a tshirt or kimono)
-being able to look at myself in the mirror without avoiding it
-taking back my agility (played a sport year round in highschool and basketball in college)

This was my first go at this.. cant wait to see what else I think of,

Weird? Hmm.. I’m looking forward to a lot of things ... Weirdly enough, I want to jump in my husbands arms and be able to wrap my legs around his waist .. sounds silly but when he picks me up, my legs just dangle. That’s not sexy!

Been a voyeur on this thread for a while but today I baked these great tuna, sweet corn & sweet potato frittata muffins again. They’re so yummy & freeze really well.
I threw in a stalk of finely chopped celery. Was going to add some capsicum too but it had died in my fridge.
    About 100cals each, 9g Protein, 8g carbs & 1.3g fat.
Found the recipe in the guide to weight loss surgery nutrition my surgeon gives all his patients.

Lap band proved to be so statistically unsuccessful and had so many complications that our surgeons here won't even do it anymore. RNY is completely different. It's not just the restriction that works, it is the hormone and metabolic reset that happens. When the brain/stomach hormonal communications are so damaged from yo-yo dieting, RNY can fix this. Also, with WLS , the metabolism does not bottom out like what happens with a non surgical diet of caloric restriction. I am approaching 1year post op RNY. I don't have a lot of restriction now - there are still some foods that can bother me - like raw salad, but generally I can eat whatever I want. The thing is, I just don't want the bad stuff anymore. I have so much energy and with exercise, I believe I have added some muscle mass. My metabolism is definitely, without a doubt, much higher than it was before surgery. As long as I exercise, eat the right foods, and log everything (I write it all down. My rule is that it must be written before I can eat it. I don't count calories now - just log the food.), I will be able to maintain my healthy weight.
Lab band is pure restriction. RNY is much more than that.

I so totally agree about "slow losing" not being slow at all. I have lost / am losing weight at about the same rate. (In the beginning it was more though.) Still, I feel like I need to get used to my new body more even though im 7 months post-op. Im about 12 lbs from my first weight goal of 176. (I started at 312 lbs about a year ago.) It seems like yesterday that I just found this forum and was on the operating table. Sometimes things taking time helps us get our heads around it even when we think it should take less time.
