I would encourage you both to speak to your mental health professionals and ask them if they are aware of the malabsorption issues after RNY especially but the sleeve also. We just went through this same scenario with a family member and it got really bad. Luckily her Dr came across a study about this and switched her medicines to liquid and the ones that aren’t available in liquid she crushes and adds to applesauce. It has quite literally saved her life. And please, im not advising anyone to start crushing their pills because some time released meds CANNOT be crushed. I’m just not sure all drs are aware that this may be an issue and unfortunately sometimes we have to be our own advocate.
im hoping you get answers and relief quickly and thank you for being brave enough to talk about this very important issue!

So I am 6 months almost to the day. I went through a really bad depression episode. Mind you I have a truama therapist. A psychiatrist a super supportive family and a host of friends. The day of my suicide attempt I had a therapy appointment in the morning. Yet none of that was enough. I will say to anyone persuing this journey get your mental health in order. I had at the time 2.3 years of sobriety and a social worker.

I had to go off my Vitamins and Calcium for six weeks (after vsg) and my levels always remained normal. I had to revise to bypass but haven't had to go off of them since bypass.

So my calcium plan personally is 1000mg of calcium 3 weeks of the month then take a week off. It has to only be the calcium citrate with d. Because any other formula causes kidney stones

Really praying that my corner has really turned and there is some JOY ahead. icried when they removed my PICC line, I fought to retain it so hard, it was an anchor on my bumpy seas, even asked if my wishes counted for anything? to be told " Nope not Much." Mayhaps if a report comes back that the crystalization and crud was a causative factor in these other lumps in the path, I will put it all behind. BUT you're right, I have got to return to brave acceptance. It will still work out even if I don't see how. Don't even have a visit to the Columbus bunch until Mid-April, I guess that's all I get but I will pull on my Big Girl Panties,2 sizes down (yay) and March into March! Thanks cl,for the " Home Truths", I needed that.

You'll be fine for a week. I had to stop my Calcium for a bit and change it entirely due to kidney stones and went without all Vitamins for 2 weeks because of surgery

I wish I would have been prepared for just how much my taste for things would change. I stocked up on lots of things that make me gag now (any kind of diet sugar) so all the Protein Shakes and clear Protein Drinks and crystal light and Tomato Soup I bought are going to be donated. I bought cases just to be prepared and had them shipped from Amazon so no returns.

I second the comment about Constipation. I mean, doc told me that I could get constipated, but I'd never had that happen to me, so I just thought it meant having a little trouble going. TMI ALERT: I didn't realize that I'd ultimately end up for over an hour and a half on the toilet, exhausted, crying, and bleeding, and still unable to get the poop that was part way out all the way out. This happened twice. And I didn't learn until later that my doc would have liked me to go to the hospital when that happened. Nor did I realize that "getting it under control" still means that it takes me at least 20 mn to go.

I never craved spice before surgery but now I love it. I was eating Frank's Buffalo sauce on plain yogurt in the very early stages, I think puree stage. My surgeon and nut didn't caution me against it and didn't say a word when i told them i ate the yogurt/ hot sauce combo every day. And I didn't get any ulcers. I tolerate and want more spice now than i did before.

Use the glycerin suppositories. It softens up your poop so you aren't pooping granite. I use them a few times a week especially when eating meat. supplements and Protein Powder and lack of Fiber really jack up our systems. I tried colace but I like the faster moving of the glycerin suppository. I've used milk of magnesia a couple of times but it takes over night to work. I don't want to be on laxatives for life or for my butt to forget how to poo so I feel more comfortable with the glycerin, not that it is a joy sticking them up there. I'm only 2 1/4 months out of rny so I hope things work themself out.

I already have. I get different opinions from everyone. I have my actual bariatric surgeon and also my new bariatric surgeon (because my insurance changed I see a new one for follow up care) and they have opposite opinions regarding Protein powder in general. Old one says it is fine to use and new said omg don't use it at all, just eat meat. Due to kidney issues I can only eat 6oz of meat a day and my portions are still around 3/4 cup to 1 cup (depending on food) 3 times a day. The kidney surgeon suggested eating cauliflower for protein. I told him the protein wasn't high enough and he googled it in front of me and saw that you need to eat a full cup of cauliflower for 2g protein. I typically use the pp mixed in food or as a Meal Replacement not as added protein. I just wanted to hear if anyone else has experience with other surgeries after bypass.

Sweettoothless got a reaction from Frustr8 in Surgery after RNY- no protein powder no vitamins???
I was just told that prior to my upcoming surgery (non rny related) that I need to be off all Vitamins and no Protein Powder for a week. Will I have issues with this? She said the vitamins can interfere with anesthesia and the pp can mess it up as well. I'm about 3.5 months out of rny surgery. My bloodwork for vitamins done at 3 months were all good. She said if I felt bad I could take them again but stop 3 days before. BUT on the surgery paperwork it said to not stop taking vitamins (only stop fish oil) if you are a gbp person. I didnt read the packet until I got home or I would have asked for clarification. Anyone have any advice about this?

Don’t beat yourself up... you’re human. That’s probably not the last time you’re going to eat Taco Bell, and that doesn’t mean you are going to fail at this. Nothing is set in stone, you’re still a baby at this. How did you feel afterwards?

Got a little bit of good news this morning... Found out the denial appears to because of coding. They have been told by UHC to use a code that includes the removal of the band and the bypass. Now they're asking for the codes to be separate... One for the removal and one for the bypass. She's confused because UHC is the one that told them to use it! So my Dr has a peer to peer set up on Tuesday with the Medical Director of UHC.

YES! I mentioned it to my urologist that I happened to be at. It is starting to hurt less. I was even sitting on an inflatable donut in the car and in a chair. I thought it was from hard poop trauma (before I started glycerin suppositories) and was embarrassed! It felt the same as the time many years ago I bruised it by falling hard. This time I didnt do anything. I did lose butt and foot fat before anything else (i'm almost 3 months in)

So, just to update, it's now been 5 mo since surgery and things are looking very differently! I've lost 100lbs, I'm much more active and my menopause symptoms are mostly gone. My period has regulated, the heavy bleeding is gone and I've only had 1 Migraine that was very mild. My OB/GYN was all set to do a hormonal IUD but we decided against it now that things have changed so much. Not to say that I'm no longer in menopause but it's looking more like a gradual transition now. It was a wild ride for a while!

You are one blessed individual, for every one of you there is a Stormin' Norma, Weeping Wilda, Screaming Sarah, Foul-tempered France's and Bewildered Belinda all saying WTF just happened to me? Do you remember Edith Bunker telling Archie she was going "through the change" and he told her to hurry up because he didn't have the time for this? You drew a dressage mare but most of us get a Bucking Bronco which we're gonna have to ride bareback and try not to get thrown!

I can tell you I have more self-esteem now at 240lbs than I did at 140. I was skinny and fit and had a 6-pack and HATED my body. I thought I was the most disgusting thing to walk this earth. Becoming fat was in a twisted way a blessing because I learned to love me for ME and not for how I looked. I was vain and self-absorbed and would pick at every invisible fat roll when I was skinny. Self-esteem should never be connected to the way you look. The only reason it is for some people, I think, is because society says it's "bad and wrong" to be overweight. Well, as a former skinny person... if you don't love yourself, you won't love your body no matter how it looks. Now I hope to lose the weight so my inner confidence matches my outward appearance.

My good friend Jay Casale‎ just dropped his latest podcast episode where he interviews Amanda Johnson from TLC's hit TV show, "Family By the Ton. In Jay's words...
"Amanda Johnson currently stars on TLC's hit show, "Family By the Ton.", in which she bravely shares her journey as both a food addict and a cancer patient.

When I met her two years ago, she was a sassy graphic designer with perfect makeup and a short temper, who had no time for nonsense or ignorance.

She's still all of those things and more. She's also my friend, and I couldn't have been happier to speak with her in her first off-camera interview since Family by the Ton started airing. In true Amanda fashion, she held nothing back."

I lost a ton of hair about 4 - 7 months post op. Probably about half of my hair. I swear by the Hair and nails gummies that have Biotin in them. That and getting my Protein in really helped. I am 1 1/2 years post op and my hair is thicker than it was before surgery. HTH!
