CyndieRI reacted to Beta98 in Preop not losing
Thanks for the words of encouragement all. It was so disappointing I cried and cried... even though I know my body will react this way. I guess not having any food for so long is working my emotions. At least some centers let them have one meal a day. I feel like a prisoner. Now I've pretty much stopped caring... just want to get through it.

Ah the $64,000.00 question my friend. We ALL want to know how long hair loss lasts! LOL.
(And btw, sorry bout the typhoid. The good news is you'll prolly be dead before you go completely bald.)

CyndieRI reacted to elcee in Increased risk of colorectal cancers for people that undergo WLS
There was a study done a number of years ago ( approx 2013) that showed that obese patients that underwent WLS had an increased risk of developing colo rectal cancers . Whilst obesity is a risk factor for these cancers for some reason the rate became higher in people that had surgery. This seems odd as one would think that having the surgery and losing weight would cause a decrease in risk.
Wondering if there have been any further studies done and what the outcome of those was.

I met my husband online 13 years ago. It might not work for everyone - and certainly I met some losers before I found my prince - but for me it was awesome! Good luck!!

If you are in the Rhode Island or Northeast Region of the US you should look into Dr. J. Giovanni and her team, they are AMAZING! Sherry and her staff, including PA Cobb are just really helpful, friendly, and kind. Not to mention supportive! It's been 3.5 years since my sleeve surgery, I've lost 120 pounds and could not be happier.

CyndieRI reacted to Matt Z in What to eat at 8wks!?
Yup, 6 weeks I was cleared for everything other than raw veggies, at 8 weeks all food (that I could tolerate) was fair game. Our Nutritionist pushes whole foods over processed. She's a vegan but doesn't require or enforce restrictions on meats, our only "rule" was to ensure that no added sugars are present, if so then the total sugar count per serving needs to be less than 5g, fat needs to also be less than 5g per serving.

    I started this journey @ 470lbs. I'm 8 1/2 weeks post op and today I weighed in at 399lbs!

This word is for all the pre-op/recent surgery folks. Stick with it...Follow the steps. It's more than worth it.
Good luck and God bless us all on this journey!

CyndieRI reacted to carlab in My birthday gift to me
A year ago, I was getting ready for gastric sleeve surgery. I was tired, fat and unhealthy. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and was in insulin dependent diabetic. I was on antidepressants.
January 9, 2018 was the day my life changed. And now I’m LIVING!
i work out 5-6 days per week, I love kickboxing! I’m down nearly 100 lbs and I feel younger than ever. I’m off all medication and according to my lab work, I’m a whole new woman.
For those of you who are considered sugery, DO IT! Be ready to change everything about your current life. My biggest obstacle has been my brain. Changing the way I think about life. About food. About who i have in my life.
I found my life. My value. Find yours!!

I’m 52 and was sleeved on 10/10/18. I’m probably losing slower than younger people but I really don’t compare. I’m just happy I’m losing!! Last week I finally hit the 200’s for the first time in FOREVER and I feel awesome! My surgery weight was 327 (highest was 365) and currently 295!

Some of the things I’m looking forward to....

Taking a plane ride and not needing a seatbelt extender....

Being able to ride a horse again (haven’t been able to in 20+ years)....

Keeping up with my husband when we walk.....

Buying clothes in a regular store. (I currently only buy online because I never want to go clothes shopping)....

And I think #1 - not having to look at the restaurant pictures before I select which all-inclusive resort to go to on vacation - to make sure they don’t have arms on the chairs! (Yes - I had this problem the first time I went on vacation with my husband. SO embarrassing!!)

Yogurt was definitely one of the easiest things for me! I had a tough time with scrambled eggs (still do at 8 weeks out). I love pea Soup so that was pretty easy (no chunks)! Good luck and like Oct517 said, take it slow!

CyndieRI reacted to Missouri-Lee's Summit in Post Op depression/Struggle with meds
Does your Mother, by chance, have to take methimazole (three times per day)? If so, it's probably the frequency that makes it difficult for her. Have you tried adding her meds to her food? I'm sure you've tried everything, so I apologize if I'm asking dumb questions.
Sometimes when a person has a problem taking meds, there is some anxiety associated with the feeling that they will throw up or worse, whatever worse is. What if you try adding it to her food without her knowing? Maybe, psychologically, she's making matters worse by thinking that she'll be unable to keep her meds down. It's an old trick but it might work.
I was never able to get down my recommended Fluid or Protein. Not even close to optimal. I know some people advise others to force down their fluids and protein no matter what. Be tough on yourself, big-girl panties, and all that. I disagree. Listen to your body; it's talking to you. It's trying. You can only do what you can do. It takes months before malnutrition kicks in. Your Mother will be fine. I'd concentrate on trying to get her meds down and worry less about the fluid and protein. I had an abysmal time with my fluid/protein intake, yet when my 3-month labs came back post-bypass, I aced them. My visit to my endocrinologist last week (I have the autoimmune thyroid condition known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis), also revealed stellar lab results. Excellent A1C, excellent blood pressure... and no meds for either anymore. I also take anti-depressants. I was lucky, I guess, since I could down any size pill immediately after my surgery. Horse pill size, no problem. Even several at once.
I think I'm rambling here, moving from one topic question to the next without making any sense. Your Mother's experience with suddenly thinking everything tastes too sweet, etc is extremely common. Post-surgery most everything smells and tastes differently. I'm still noticing this at 5 months out.
My main point is: continue to support your Mother by NOT contributing to the chorus of other people telling her that she needs to do this or that and if she doesn't do it "right" then she's a failure. Posting this comment on behalf of your Mother says a lot about you. She's lucky to have you in her corner. Keep helping her by reminding her that her body will sort things out (eventually). She's healing. Keep being positive even when she's struggling.
And keep us posted! We care about you and your Mother.
