mousecat88 reacted to esskay77 in Gum after surgery??
Yes, the issue is completely if you swallow it. Apparently many people do and they just want to make sure this doesnt happen because it could cause problems. It is really the only reason to not chew gum.

mousecat88 reacted to CrankyMagpie in Blood thinner injections
I have to inject myself with blood thinners once a day for a month. I'm only mad about it because the injections have to be in my stomach, which is very hard for me to do. (That's where my organs live! I don't want to!)
It does get very bruised. But whatever, the bruises heal eventually.
And everything else heals, too, with or without the blood thinner. My incisions are itching so much that I know they're mostly healed.
The risk of deep vein thrombosis leading to pulmonary embolism is scary enough to keep me giving myself the shots and moving around every hour when I'm awake. I actually might be taking it further than necessary, because I set an alarm 5 hours after I go to bed, and I get up and walk around then, too. (It isn't helping me be less tired, but I'm one of those people who need 9+ hours of sleep a night, and I don't want to risk developing a clot because I sleep longer than the average person.)

Surgery was Monday morning. Got home yesterday afternoon.
Post-op pain is manageable. The only intense pain is around an incision that was stapled into the muscle. Not having any trouble with swallowing. Started adding stool softener to liquids to avoid Constipation.
All in all, I'm happy to be on the other side of surgery.

Mine was only about 2 hrs or so and most of that time was the 300 question personality evaluation. I also spoke with him for a while about my support system, what I knew about the surgery and what I expect from the surgery...plus all the questions about substance abuse and previous mental health history.

For me, my surgeon runs the insurance initially to ensure it is covered. Then you go through all the hoops (the nutritionist, psych eval, weight loss, whatever)... and THEN they actually seek approval for the insurance. The first check with insurance is to make sure you have the right coverage and to get the guidelines from the insurance company to see everything they need to approve it. My insurance covers the surgery over a certain BMI... but they still have other requirements you don't see that they don't outright tell you unless you ask, that the surgeon gets (i.e. nutritionist clearance, psych clearance, etc).
I was scared that I would go through all of the appointments and then at the end insurance would deny it, but that didn't happen. It doesn't sound like your doc is stringing you along. You have to complete all of the requirements from their office and from insurance before insurance will approve it. Insurance does not approve it in the beginning, but at the end.

I actually don’t think this is true. The part of the stomach bypassed is not “the part that processes fats and sugars”. And gastric bypass patients don’t “lose” restriction, but the body does adapt to the malabsorption initially caused by the surgery.

The low fat requirement is, as someone else stated, because these foods generally have more calories in them. This surgery is about developing healthy habits long term, and abiding by a low fat, low calorie, high protein diet is part of that.

Since my surgery date is November 1st, I'll be the test subject for this thread. hahaha.
I started the pre-op early. Today is my start. Starving. But I gotta just deal!

I was told may times, NO GUM!!! I still don't chew it though it is probably fine now.(5 years out).
Not sure about mints. I know they said we could have those Listerine "sheets" that melt in your mouth but give you fresh breath.

The incredible world of thrift stores. Went from a size 46 waist to a 34. Shirt size from 3XL or 18.5 neck to 15.5 neck or L in dress shirts. Will not spend over $3-$5 per item. Having a blast finding great items that fit. Always felt guilty going to big and tall just to overpay for khaki expandable pants. Love getting my wife's attention each morning I walk out the door for work. Only regret, I did not get the sleeve sooner. Gained all my weight from 25-44. Almost made it to 300lbs. Ugh...Now back to 185. You can do this too!!!

Aww you guys are so awesome! I love this group.

It’s been months since i posted this....after weighing my options, i’ve decided against a reduction. I really don’t need it. I personally would feel weird with smaller boobs, i’m so used to having them and they’re still perky. Unfortunately even now, i still haven’t lost weight in that area, just obviously my band size is considerably smaller. Also i don’t have back issues so my insurance probably would not cover a reduction in my case anyway. I think i’m just going to continue with weight training and focus on body composition and then go from there.

I had my breast reduction in January 2017, before I decided on having gastric bypass. I went from an H to a D cup. I wish I had done it 10 years prior. I had IMMEDIATE back and ribcage relief. I could BREATHE easier. I became like an inch taller! lol. Honestly, if I was allowed, I would have had them take them off entirely. They've caused me nothing but pain my entire life. They removed EIGHT POUNDS of fat.
I am scared that I am going to now have gastric and they will shrink and get saggy again, but what can ya' do.

Oh, good. I had no idea what to expect regarding needing people to get me things or help me with things after surgery. My mom intends to stay with me the first 3 days, but then she has to go back to work. I keep forgetting there won't be any wounds to clean (I had a breast reduction last year and even though I was in no pain, I needed help with bandaging, etc).
Yeah, he does need to leave... I just can't be that person and kick someone out without them having a place to stay. I wish I was, though. lol. I know it's not "my problem" anymore, but when you're with someone almost 5 years, you still do care. Siiiiigh.

Very true. He eats far worse than I ever did. It would be beneficial to just purge the entire home of those other foods, by virtue of him not being there. lol.

My (ex) bf and I have dated for nearly 5 years; he lives with me. The last year of our relationship has been rocky anyway, but ever since I told him I had decided to have gastric he became even more standoffish and argumentative. Two weeks ago we had a huge blowout over something completely idiotic, he comes back to the house, and says he has been acting the way he has because he thinks that once I lose weight I am going to leave him and that's all he can think about.
Mind you... I have not even had the surgery yet. He said I am going to lose weight, gain self-esteem, realize I am too good for him, and leave him.
Well, guess what, pal... I don't need to lose ANY weight to realize I am too good for you. It's been a long time coming, but I think it's even sadder that he is using my choice to get healthier as a justification for being an a*s.
The only thing this does is put me in a rough position as far as someone staying with me while I recover. My mom and stepdad are going to take "shifts" as long as they can, but they both work. And the ex is currently dwelling awkwardly in my basement, but will probably not give me a hand at all. It does make me sad because I had hoped he would be there at the hospital with me... but then all of this BS happens. *insert gigantic eye roll emoji here*
I am okay, though. I need these next 12 months to focus on me and getting healthy and fit and not dealing with unnecessary dramatics and stress. I have always thrived when single and he actually had moved out of the house for a year and it was fantastic. I hate to say it, but I'm looking forward to this new chapter - of not just weight loss, but of being single and free!

Ever since I was approved for surgery about 3 weeks ago, I have been eating so poorly. I have been eating every single thing I have convinced myself I will "never have again"... to the point of absurdity. Like a bucket list. I am eating worse than I ever have in my entire life, probably. I am really struggling to get on track. I had no weight loss requirement before surgery or anything, and my doctor knows I've gained weight but said it was okay at my last appointment with him. Because he said it was okay, my brain gave me a free leash to just go and eat whatever junk I can find. I'm struggling to stop. My lunch today was just a huge plate of potato and macaroni salad... followed, ironically, by an Atkins bar. My Breakfast was brownies and Doritos. And I don't even LIKE sweets. I have to start the pre-op liquid (I get one meal a day) diet on the 16th. Did anyone struggle with this coming up to their surgery? I saw some people in Reddit refer to it as their food funerals.

I took 2 weeks off for RNY Gastric Bypass and it was lovely! It's like a mini vacation at home to rest and Neflix binge. When I returned to work as an Office Manager, it was full time so I just tried to take it easy as much as possible and do as much desk work that I could. Several days in the first week back to work, I would go take a rest in my car during my lunch hour. It always gave me the afternoon boost. Evenings, I would go to bed early. Before you know it, you'll be down in weight and feeling fabulous. The energy is awesome post-op.
