hey guys! i just started my process in february, i’m still in pre-op stages without a surgery date yet. though it’s looking like it will be early/mid august. my starting weight was 347, i went down to 343 and im back up to 349 now so my team wants me to get down to 343 again before they schedule me. i’m 22

this is what i was thinking of doing. i know my surgeon changes the pre-op diet requirements on a patient to patient basis so i’m not sure what my requirement will be time wise, etc but i was thinking maybe doing 2 shakes a day at least? to get started?

i guess perhaps i’m caught in between a mental spot of “do i really want to start shakes now when i have another month to *enjoy* myself” or “do i take care of myself and quit that childish attitude because i’ll still be able to eat food after surgery it’ll just be different?”

sorry if that doesn’t make sense, my head is all over the place lately.

I’m so against the idea of anything being inserted like the IUD or arm one so I’m crossing my fingers this new pill is better! If not I’ll have to go back to the old school way of doing things 😂

venting so feel free to ignore. don’t get why there is such a bias against weed.
i met with the dietician and social worker today. both asked me about my marijuana usage and alcohol consumption. i said my marijuana use was down (a half lie? it is down but not as much as i said it was) but alcohol was up due to celebrating graduating college on saturday. they were both disappointed that i didn’t completely stop smoking pot, but had no problem with my drinking. they obviously want time to stop both for surgery, but didn’t seem phased about the drinking. in fact the social worker told me to “party it up” this weekend.
granted i’m not phased about the drinking either, i’m really not a big drinker, it is just up because of celebrating my graduation and will calm down after this month. but still?
i’m just venting but i really don’t understand why there is such a negative bias around pot. what’s the harm!! it’s legal here in MA!!! alcohol is worse for you!!!
again just venting so feel free to ignore this

Note: When you ingest substances that the liver says, "Hey, we have to deal with this bad boy in a hurry, break it down and get it out of here!" it adds stress on our liver and causes it to work it's ass off. We're already stressing the liver by quick weight loss. Quick weight loss can actually make the liver more unhealthy before the weight loss and weight stability can make it better.
So you don't want to add things to your body that:
    1. Place more stress on your liver--an organ doing a MAJOR amount of the heavy lifting during weight loss (quick or otherwise).
    2. Don't want to contribute to possible relapse into substance use.
    3. Perhaps make things more toxic because it enters your blood stream so quickly, since your gut is altered (although no intestinal alterations occur with VSG, you still shorten (dramatically) the time it takes to ingest something to the time it hits the part of the intestine where it's processed by the liver (or into the blood stream where it is still processed by the liver).

I understand it from that perspective but isn’t alcohol just as harmful, if not more? I just don’t understand the dirty looks, etc. Like, I’m 22. Im graduating college with a 3.5 GPA and, so what, I smoke weed. Doesn’t make me a bad person

saygrace reacted to Creekimp13 in When will I be able to eat “normally”
I eat normally now, and I love it. 1200 calories a day. I'm never hungry. My energy is awesome.
But you know...there's a big difference between eating "normally" and eating the way we used to.
I used to think it was "normal" to drink a 2 liter of Pepsi over the course of a day, and have...ya know....5 or 6 slices of bread in a day (what's a few PB and J sandwiches?)...maybe some fried chicken...and dessert? Booyah! Bring it on...big servings and seconds, please. And pass the Doritos, dammit....TV means snacks!
    Yeah, no.
What I used to perceive as normal...and what I now realize is normal....are two very different things.
My advice...(take it or leave it)...
Really figure out what normal is gonna look like for you long term. Do some research. Talk to your nutritionist. Create a new healthy normal.
Be very careful of extremes and extremist thinking.
Eating the crazy number of calories I used to eat...ain't normal.
But eating starvation level calories long term isn't normal either. (I realize for many folks this is a necessary step in the process)
Avoid extremes and work toward sane moderation.
    "Normal" isn't that far away:)

    Hi Saygrace,
I'm 26 turning 27 at the time of my surgery which is booked for October this year. I'm getting my surgery done in Czech republic and privately however have given myself 6 months to do some counselling and see a dietician to prepare myself for the lifestyle changes. I am 210 pounds at the moment, have 90 pounds to lose. I want to end my vicious cycle of yo yo dieting and carrying around this extra weight. Just want to be healthy.

woooo!! i regularly see a therapist so the psych consult wasn’t as scary for me going in. just the usual questions and making sure you want to do it for the right reasons.

also, not sure if it was just the lady i saw, but the psych team tends to read you the riot act if you’re a pot smoker. i got really upset about how the doctor treated me when we talked about it, but i was comforted by the dietician and the surgeon (who both didn’t really care about the fact i smoke, just obviously can’t right before/after surgery). funnily enough, the dietician was telling me about different strains to get that won’t cause hunger which i thought was pretty cool!
not sure if you smoke or anything but mentioning the psych consult made me think of this and perhaps it’s useful to others so i thought i would share

My doctor knows I smoke an e-cigarette with a very low nicotine juice. I quit smoking cigarettes in 2012. Best thing I’ve ever done. I’m smoking my e-cig and I’m 3 weeks post op. I plan to quit this too. But I’m taking baby steps. One life change at a time for me. Lol

From the various videos I’ve watched, sleeve stretching is a myth. I drink carbonated Water just about daily. There’s not enough carbonation to stretch your stomach even if it did.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I know it happened to me before I was sleeved about three & a half years ago.
Now that I'm far enough on the other side, I look at some of the food I used to shovel down & ask, "Why did this food(s) have such power over me? What about it did I let control my life?" And I reply back to myself, "I don't know."
What if - just as an experiment - you look at food & really ask yourself why it has power over you?
Good luck. You are not alone.

Hello! So I am technically 30, can I still respond? Haha I am hoping to have my surgery sometime in June or July, but I am secretly hoping that since I don't have a time prerequisite on belonging to a program or what not, that maybe they can squeeze me in sooner. Who knows!
