I had my surgery 12/21 and I am experiencing the same issues. My doctor told me yesterday to back off solids and drink liquids for a week to see how that feels. He said my stomach may just be irritated still. I also don't have an appetite but the doc said that was okay as well, as long as I get my Protein and Water requirements in. It does get better though.

    Hi,

I had my sleeve on 11 Dec 2017. I am from Singapore.

332 lb pre starting the pre op diet
    320 lb right after op
300 lb 3 weeks post op
293 lb 5 weeks post op

When I went for my 1st appoint 3 weeks post op, the staff at the hospital told me that I am expected to lose more so I got depressed.

I had few days where the weight does not go down, generally when I am sick with flu or cold which made me feel down however I am starting to get used to these short pleatu and try to adjust my diet

I am currently at 63-70g of Protein and 800-850 calories daily.

I hope to lose 130 lb with the 12-18 months window so my weight will be 200 lb from this surgery and then lose more by my own there after.

Mine was Dec 21, 2017. Is anyone else having troubles keeping solids and liquids down at this stage? I feel a little embarrassed to put this out there but we are all adults that are going to experience this so here goes, I am also constipated. Could this be a reason I can't keep anything down? I really haven't passed much since I've started solids.

I'm looking at all these people getting cleared for soft foods. I feel like my surgeon is the only one with such a strict post op diet. I was sleeved 12/28/17, first week home I was on Clear Liquids only, now i'm on full liquids until the 18th (which will be 2 weeks)then i have to do 2 weeks of pureed, then finally i get start a regular diet on February 1st. Is there anyone else with a diet like this?

I had surgery 12/27. Surgery weight was 245 and im 231 now. I have followed the full liquid diet as of now but i am struggling to drink and eat enough. I dont have an appetite. I am really hating the Protein Shake after taste and honestly i prefer to not eat but i push myself to least get 60g of Protein with shakes. I also bought Isopure Protein Drink in different flavors with 40g protein and i drink it cold. Just started creme of wheats and its ok. I dont have any issues drinking only thing that is happening lately after i eat creamy watery Soup is hiccups. I have to regularize my breathing to stop hiccups. Lets stay motivated and keep encouraging each other..

Thank you all for your responses! The blood stopped after that night and my doctor recommended I backtrack to liquids for a few days which helped a lot. The burning sensation was indeed due to stomach acid which wasn't really helped by antacids but I notice that very bland and blended foods didn't cause the same symptoms. Even though my dietitian has been recommending that I try to get on solid foods, I've been taking it very slow in order to see what i'm able to tolerate.
Again, thanks so much for all the responses and concern! You are all awesome!

I was there in the early stages as well. I had my surgery 12/30 so thankfully I missed the holiday season and just had my first holiday season post op at 1 year out but January was really hard for me last year. I really had some regret in the those early weeks and once I returned to work I was so exhausted I thought I could never make it through the day. I didn't start feeling myself until I was about 3 months out and back on a regular diet, you will get there. Just take it a day at a time. I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat.

((hugs)) So here's what's happening. You read a lot about changing tastes after surgery. I "think" it's due to ketosis. You are in ketosis as much because of low cals as you are low carb. It gives us a metallic taste, etc.
If it were me, I'd concentrate on getting in my liquids to make sure I stay hydrated. And hydrating will also lessen the ketone concentration. But you just have to drink, cuz you MUST! And you have to force yourself to eat--cuz you have to eat...
You just "do it" cuz you have to -- it's non-negotiable.
BUT (and it's a big but)! You can reframe the way you choose to think about it and to glom onto it!!! Yay!!! You have an icky taste. Embrace it, cuz it's cutting your appetite to hell! It won't always be this way. And soon, you will struggle with recidivism and sliding back into bad habits and dealing with stalls and regains! Embrace the now! Love it! Look forward to only eating cuz you MUST. It will help make this time way more tolerable. I swear it will!
Make sure you drink, drink, drink!!!! Find something--even flavored teas (unsweetened) and diluted help!

Mommyof2grlz reacted to Michelle_Lynn in Can drink liquids with little to no restriction? 5 days post op
Totally agree! I'm a month post op and had the same concerns at first. I never felt restricted on liquids, and when I graduated to puree/soft solids last week I still didn't feel that "full" feeling.

I started "normal" foods yesterday and dense Proteins ABSOLUTELY fill me after a few bites and keep me satisfied for hours. It's a whole new world when you get to normal textures! Hang in there.

I am going to have to really think about how much (little!) I am eating when I am in the grocery store and adjust the volume of food that I buy. Last week I bought eggs, a few pounds of chicken, a couple of sweet potatoes, and maybe three zucchini. I was worried that it wouldn't be enough for the week. Now I am whipping up Soup and purees to freeze because there is no way I can get through it when a bite or three of something fills me up. And my fridge is full of bowls that have a half portion of something in them .... a quarter cup of Greek yogurt or an ounce of chicken that I couldn't finish. I am going to have to change my stockpiling mentality! This is a bizarre experience.

I probably wouldn't have started with broccoli and beef. I was warned about broccoli. It has to be very soft cooked, practically mush. Like salads, it's the kind of food that can give you problems. I would be mashing sweet potato or sticking with something like that.
As suggested, try chicken or tuna or a minced meat. I'd eat a beef, chicken or turkey meatball or patty or something like that. Lots of stews and meaty Soups.
Have you got a dietician? If not, I would consider getting a bariatric cookbook because I think it would be helpful.
I also got toddler utensils. I have a "Frozen" themed fork that is tiny. It's a bit silly but it ensures that I could only take small mouthfuls.
I'm four months out and I'm a fast eater. It's not a problem now but I used to be in pain all the time so you need to force yourself to eat slowly. Take a small bite, then set a timer on your phone for 60 seconds and don't even consider another mouthful till then.
This part isn't forever. You will get through it. Good luck!

My husband and I both had surgery November 15 so we are seven weeks post op. Things have been going smoothly, about as expected. We are both hitting water/protein goals and losing steadily. However, something weird has started and I’m wondering if anyone else has experience with this.
My husband (26yr) came home from work yesterday and had an emotional breakdown. Full on ‘crying, doomsday outlook, all hope is lost’ breakdown. My hubby isn’t the crying type, in fact, it’s pretty difficult to get an emotional response out of him at all, ever. So naturally, it kinda freaked me out. I started quizzing him with questions to try and find out where this is coming from but he insists that he isn’t overwhelmed at work, our home life is stable and he isn’t having any other emotional trauma right now. So I’m wondering, is this just a side effect of losing extreme amounts of weight quickly? He’s lost 55 pounds since starting the pre-op diet and has lost 70 overall with the supervised diet for insurance requirements. And if anyone has experienced or heard of this, does it level out as the weight loss slows or could this be his natural hormone levels coming out and maybe he should seek medical advice?

Had my VSG Thursday the 28. No problems with keeping liquids down. On stage 2 with Protein Drinks and doing fine.
My biggest problem is left shoulder and rib pain. Wet towel and heating pad do help but when it’s starts to seize up it hurts pretty bad. Made it to the shower today. Can’t wait for what’s to come!!!!
