Don't buy too many shakes. Your taste might might change. I couldn't stand the strawberry flavored shakes after surgery but was fine with them before. Had to give away a whole box of Optifast strawberry shakes.

I bought a new Ninja blender and made smoothies from Protein Drinks. I was never a powder Protein person, but the ready to drink ones are great in a blender with some sugar free flavored Syrup and ice. Also when you start on solid foods, the air fryer is great investment. i am 12 weeks out and bought one a couple weeks ago. It is awesome!

OmaJ reacted to catwoman7 in Stall Questions
my first stall lasted two weeks. It was weeks 2 and 3 post surgery. It broke during week 4 and I dropped 6-8 lbs right away - like within a couple of days. I've heard of the "three-week stall" last as long as three weeks, actually.

as for carbs, it depends on your program. Some surgeons recommend ultra-low-carb diets, some insist on something more moderate. Mine was one of the latter. While in the losing phase, I kept my carbs under 80 grams. But there are programs that limit carbs to more like 30 or 40. And there are some people whose programs are more moderate carb, but who do lower carb on their own because it works better for them.
I doubt 35-45 carbs is going to de-rail you unless you are *super* carb sensitive. I think it's just the regular three-week stall. Just stick to your program, and it will eventually break.

    Welcome.
If you felt that much anxiety after seeing the scale jump by 3 pounds, perhaps it is time to weigh yourself less frequently. Try weighing in once weekly, or even once a month.
Realistic expectations are important. Weight loss with a sleeve doesn't occur in a neat, linear pattern. We lose pounds, then stall/plateau on occasion, then may even gain pounds due to Fluid retention or glycogenation before dropping weight again.
When is the last time you lost 14 pounds in 2 weeks through diet and exercise? I'm guessing your answer is "Never."
You're doing great. Stay off the scale and allow your body to sort through the trauma it has experienced. Expecting to lose a pound a day is unrealistic.
    Good luck to you.

I'm having pretty much the same experience, but also felt like I was needing to take Miralax. I did, it really helped with the gas, but had me rushing to the bathroom (a bit too effective). I tried calling the nutritionist, but was too late in the day to get a reply if things are as should be expected. Sounds like we're on the right track. My surgery was 9/5.

I agree, I'm only 10 days post op, and my main focus is following Dr.'s orders to the letter! I want to heal good inside, as I read about the potential complications if things are progressed too quickly. I'm taking short walks outside, progressed to around the block (slowly) once or twice daily. That really helps too!

OmaJ reacted to gomezk2 in WHy am I so scared of a bypass?
I understand your fear but trust me when i say do not be afraid of gastric bypass. There is a reason why gastric bypass is the gold standard out of all bariatric procedures.. i also like you have had all 3 procedures. Lapband placed in 2007. (284 down to 190)... Revision to Sleeve on 2015 ( 240 down to 177)... and just one month ago had a revision from sleeve to gastric bypass. (211 pounds at day of surgery and currently i am down to 186)..
I also am on the same boat as you regarding weight reduction. I did gain about 30 pounds but i had a combination of gerd plus hiatal hernia and also that my sleeve pouch stretched. I can say that a month after having bypass surgery it feels good. Like i feel that i dont even have anything done on me internally. I am currently finally on the solids stage and all is going well and no reflux at all which i am relieved. Soo just go for it and get the relief you desperately need for your GERD.

OmaJ reacted to Jeaniered in Anyone else plateau 2-3 weeks post-op?
    This article might help
Hitting a plateau or weight loss “stall” is common for just about everyone. While it’s certainly frustrating, it’s important to understand this is just temporary.
The good news is weight loss plateaus usually happen after you have lost a significant amount of weight—so congratulations!
During your post-op weight loss, the body will eventually need a ‘time out” to stabilize itself and adjust to your lower nutrition intake, smaller size and increased calorie burn due to exercise.
It can happen at any time in your weight loss journey, but is particularly common 3-6 months afterbariatric surgery.
Generally, stalls can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, even though you’re staying on track. Expect from one to three plateaus in the first year following weight loss surgery.
WHY DO WEIGHT LOSS STALLS HAPPEN?
You can blame your body’s metabolism—
When you lose weight rapidly, you are losing lean body mass (muscle) and fat. Muscle plays a big part in the burning of calories by keeping your metabolic rate high, so you want to hold onto muscle and strive to build more! (This is one of the reasons we ask you to take in so much protein).
A weight-loss plateau usually occurs when your metabolism slows down. Now that you’re thinner, the activities you’re performing may not be resulting in as much caloric burning.
An increased metabolic rate is not the only reason for keeping muscle. You want to keep muscle so you can use them to exercise and burn even more calories. Weak muscles make exercise more difficult, so build muscle with strength training and cardio workouts.
EIGHT TIPS TO OVERCOME BARIATRIC WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS AND BOOST METABOLISM
    1. Increase the intensity of your exercise.
    2. Weigh yourself less often.
    3. Keep food journaling to ensure there are no negative nutrition issues creeping in.
    4. Eat all that Protein to help retain muscle, even in shake form.
    6. Drink 64 ounces every day.
    7. sleep eight hours nightly and keep a set schedule, even on weekends.
    8. Talk to your bariatric team during the plateau for an added level of support and guidance.
    KEEP IN MIND…
If you are weight training, consider that muscle weighs more than fat; while you are building muscle, you are still losing inches (girth) even though if it isn’t reflected in pounds lost.
    USE YOUR SUPPORT NETWORK
Remember there are several layers of people supporting you during your road back to good health:
Your doctor Bariatric dietitians and nutritionists Family Friends Colleagues Live and online support groups. (They understand more than anyone!) If a plateau lasts more than a few weeks and you haven't contacted your bariatric surgeon yet, make an appointment for an ASAP visit to rule out any issues.
Meanwhile, stay positive and Celebrate how far you have come in a short time.
This is a very brief traffic jam on your highway to success.

Don't stock shakes. Your taste might change after surgery and you will hate some flavors.

The way I'm thinking about it is this: the goal my first 3 months is to heal the surgery site. Just because I can't see it doesn't mean it's ok! So any food or drink is my medicine during that time (along with all the other stuff prescribed.) Losing weight is a bonus, but I want to focus on the part about healing. In the long run, gotta learn how to eat again...

I was worried about that too but you won't gain anything. I'm 19 days post op and I'm down 23 pounds. I don't eat more than 1/4 cup at a time. My main focus is drinking enough fluids!

It all comes down to calories in/calories out. Your stomach is too small to take in an adequate amount of calories to sustain your daily activity. Your body will burn the stored fat to cover the calorie deficit. You have to choose good food to put into your body, and the weight will continue to drop.

The Iron I was on, after going vegan made me super anemic, gave me some GERD. I had my script changed to slow release iron, it works in the intestine not the stomach. Problem solved. Also less Constipation.
Ask your dr for the coated iron.

    According to the internet
Iron is absorbed the best on an empty stomach. Yet, Iron supplements can cause stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea in some people. You may need to take iron with a small amount of food to avoid this problem. Milk, Calcium and antacids should NOT be taken at the same time as iron supplements.

Hi. I had my RNY on 9/11 and started my full liquid diet today. I've been able to get my fluids in no problem and today so far have tolerated 1/4 cup of thinned cream of wheat for Breakfast and 1/2 cup of Tomato Soup for lunch, plus an 11 oz. Premier Protein shake. If I didn't have these incisions and awful gas pain, I wouldn't think I had surgery. I don't feel a restriction, I don't feel hunger and I don't feel full either. I'm just eating by the clock and making sure I get my 64 oz. of Water in by bed time. Just not sure what is right?
