Hi I had my revision Monday 11/2. 11/3 was horrible. Not as easy as the sleeve was and I’m starving lol I cried, my nurses (2) sucked and I was in a lot of pain! More then before way more but today is day 5 post op and I’m better. My incisions started to get infected bcuz I had a rash from the dermabond so I had to Peep it off and now I’m on a horse pill antibiotic. I’m already dropping weight. I only felt a little acid last night when I had Greek yogurt. My doc gave me a diet plan to follow from day 3-16.

Had the revision done at 7 30 am this morning weighing in at 180 my original goal weight. The first 12 hours were horrible. This was a very painful surgery for me and I don't know if it was because they also took the hernia I had. ( I believe they said they took it and not fixed it but I am still on the drugs. ) I have been given morphine to start with then they switched me to dillata because the morphine wasn't cutting it. I am back on liquid hydro now. I wasn't able to urinate either for the first several hours and I am still having a hard time with it. I have been crying through most of the day. Pain, anxiety and lack of sleep have been my companions as they are still not letting visitors in. I cant tell if I still have GERD . The gas pain has been in my neck and shoulders it sucks. I did 3 laps around the ward at 1 am to see if it would help because I thought I had read it helps with the gas. Well I will keep updating my progress here. Good night

For a regain problem I would not generally go from a sleeve to a bypass, as metabolically the two are too similar and one usually winds up in the same place after a couple of years. Indeed, most revisions don't yield a lot of additional weight loss; those that do mostly seem to be those who really crack the whip and get their dietary and psych acts together for the second try. One will usually lose a few pounds, typically twenty, give or take - mostly what one would expect from having to go through all the diet restrictions associated with going through the surgery again.
The simple minded way I like to think of the reasoning for the general poor results is that our stomachs started out being able to hold 32-64 oz before our original WLS, and now, a few years post op, our stomachs, even after some adaptation and stretching, hold 4-6 oz (maybe 8 in some cases), we have gotten used to living with that, so there isn't nearly as much of a difference going through the surgery again.
The DS will usually provide better results, particularly in being more regain resistant. As with the others, it is hard to expect as good results as with virgin DS, but it should still work better than the others. When I discussed this matter with our surgeon when I had my VSG - the prospect of using a DS revision as a "plan B" backup to the VSG, he cautioned about the problem of losing that regain; he said that the revision works best if you catch it early, before substantial regain has occurred, as the biggest strength of the DS is its ability to resist regain.
You are fortunate in starting with the sleeve, as that has maintained more options for you - revising an RNY to anything else that may work better (like the DS) is a very complex undertaking that few surgeons can do; as the sleeve is the basis of the DS, changing to the DS is more of a "completion" of the DS rather than an outright revision and is a pretty straightforward procedure for any DS qualified surgeon.
You seem to be doing the right things, in working out the problems that led to your regain, as that will be a key to your future success. Good luck!

I’m in Mo too and being screened at Mercy. My persons name is Dr. Lang though. I may ultimately decide to go back to Kansas City where my original was done though—they were top notch in that area of KS. We will see!

I am home, showered, and taking it easy. I am going to be on full liquids for 2 weeks. I am going to go slow as far as food and progression because I have read where quite a few by passers have problems with different stuff in the beginning. Hope that I can still drink premiere Protein Shakes and will be finding out within the hour.
Also I can already feel differences in the 2 surgeries. The sleeve had restriction from the start and I could not even drink but a few sips. This by pass is not like that at all I can drink with no problems. I just taking it slow though

    Congratulations on waking up.
    Pain is certainly no fun.
Keep making a lot of noise about your pain. Suffering quietly is over rated, and it doesn't get you pain meds.
You are your advocate. Keep advocating.
It's amazingly horrible that in this day and age the pain of some groups of people is stupidly minimized. Don't let them do it to you.
Hang in as best as you can, knowing you have folks rooting for you.

Couldn’t enjoy waking up in recovery room knowing operation was complete. So sad. So horrific
Anyone have severe pain post op. I woke up in operating room. Crying with severe pain. Wondered why I had this surgery. Wondered what happened. Thought I was dying. I said to person next to my bed I need pain meds. She said your going to be getting pain meds. Or we gave you pain meds. It was horrible. I wasn’t being helped. I would rather be knocked out. I was so looking forward to coming to in the operating room knowing I survived my operation and it was over. But this was horrific. Why did I have to be in such pain.
This continued . . . Transferred to room with pain. Had to constantly request pain meds. I shouldn’t have had to deal with so much pain.

Yes I’m down 80 pounds since March. It’s just harder because the sleeve lets you know almost immediately that you’ve had enough or too much. The bypass doesn’t. Each individual is different. If I stayed on course I would’ve lost more but I’m trying my best and that’s all you can do

Its hard to believe it has been 5 months since my revision. I weighed in at 159.6 this morning and seem to be holding steady. I dont feel like my weight bounces around as much. I am getting use to the RNY but am struggling in other areas now { alcohol}. I have never been much of a drinker but have noticed an increase and am trying to nip it in the butt now. I do not understand why this didnt happen with VSG . Any thoughts ? I see the team first part of November and am going to talk to them about this

Perhaps some of it may have to do with Pandemic? My alcohol consumption increased dramatically since March. I’ve been trying (albeit not very hard) to deal with it by keeping it out of the house. I find if there’s none around, then I can go without just fine. Problem is I eventually go out to get some. Boredom, I think.

That's weird that your drinking behavior changed all of a sudden and I can see why you didn't expect it. I wouldn't have expected it after a revision neither.
You're definitely right. Get a grip on it as soon as possible.

Just got back from my sons wedding. We had a nice time. Lots of comments that I am too thin and don't need to lose anymore weight. I am weighing the same as I did all last summer and into this past Feb, before Covid .

I had the RNY about 7 months ago for the same exact reason, the GERD was unbarable. I also gained a little weight back from eating carbs to try and stop the burning. I lost about 25 lbs pretty quickly after surgery, but havent lost a lb in the last 3 months. I am happy with my loss and am about the same weight i was at lowest with sleeve. Sometimes I miss me sleeve because the full feeling just isnt the same. Sometimes I think i eat a bit more because I dont have it. But in reality I think im eating about the same.

He can't answer because he was banned a while ago. However, my guess is that he'll discover gaining weight is still possible quite soon anyway.

Hi, with the sleeve before my 3 pregnancies I could only take 3-4 bites of food before feeling incredibly full even leading to vomiting. Within a year I had lost 150 pounds with the bypass it’s no longer a pouch fullness but an uncomfortable nausea feeling. I have an Iron stomach so I’ve only had dumping once but I stick to what I know to be safe. Everyone is different. To me the sleeve was much bettter because I’m a good addict

@SAS11 you are lucky! My psych eval was nearly 700 bucks, and that is WITH insurance paying part. 😳 A regular psychiatrist appt is a $25 copay. They said it was because it was an involved diagnostic, like an MRI, not therapeutic.

I feel lucky that I was told I could have my own psychiatrist write a letter saying that I’m competent to consent to surgery and understand the risks and benefits of the procedure. I was worried when I started my process that I wouldn’t be allowed to do that, and when I was told that I could it was a huge relief.
