I was too afraid of dying to getting sick to really test my sleeve early on. I live alone far away from friends and family so I had surgery alone and recovered alone.
I am pretty happy that I was so afraid, because by the time I introduced other foods. I had so much success with my weight loss, I wasn't willing to risk it for food.
Just because you can tolerate foods, doesn't mean you should try them. You really need to get handle on your cravings because by the time you are 6 months you will be able to eat larger amounts of the foods you shouldn't be eating.
At the 2 year mark I could easily eat 3-4000 calories a day if all I did was sit in the house and munch all day. Large pizza, family size bag of chips, unlimited Cookies. All of that. In a day if all I did was eating. Nothing is going to stop you from eating bad foods but you.

Ditto. I had read a book about, oh, 11 years ago that talked about how wonderful organic whole foods were. MSG was the devil, etc.
So I went to the grocery store and didn't know where to start. I was afraid of everything, and when I left the store I had 3 small bags of food and had spent $50 (which was a lot in those days). I get home, and there is nothing to eat! All those single ingredients, and I didn't know how to make a meal of them. Went to McDonalds for dinner.
Surgery has truly given me a reset. Since I'm not starving, I can take my time and think about what is a good thing to eat, look up a recipe, try things out. Before, I just needed to fill my belly as quickly as possible, the hunger overrode any other thought processes.

Hang in there, hopefully it’ll get better for you...gotta get that Protein in!!!

Wow this site has so much information.
I have a question about when you eat food..the amounts your supposed to vs not eating..how does that affect losing weight?
Example...if I think I am going to lose weight by not eating as opposed to eating the required..how does it work...
In my mind..if I don't eat the body goes into starvation mode making it not burn anything to keep it in reserves...is this correct?
I am 4 wks post op...and happy to be here.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes.
After gastric bypass surgery, the weight loss phase is fairly short. I entered the maintenance phase after around 7 months. So it is very important to follow the program guidelines during this phase in order to maximize your weight loss.

That is an excellent reason to have the surgery. At your stage I would recommend three things.
    1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
    2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.
    3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

Huh, I never did non/lol fat and I had a terrible gallbladder emergency, out it went. So the avocado thing- you mash it and mix it in tuna? No mayo? Interesting....crazy, I'm such a foodie and now I have to relearn a whole new way of eating!

My NUT is big on the no-fat/lo-fat thing, but I am not going to abide by that mantra. I do sub avocado for mayo sometimes - great in tuna salad. I have read a study that seemed to see a correlation between no-fat/lo-fat and gallstones - I know that probably the opposite was concluded as well....but I do know some fat helps w Constipation issues.....I intend to put a teaspoon of oil/fat in my shakes post-op.

Don't tell if you're just dating someone. It only matters if u get serious...then tell them. But if I was on the market and dating I wouldn't tell cause I'm 2 years post op and you'd never know I had surgery so what's the point of me telling people now. The surgery is all encompassing at the first 18 months and then well it sorta disappears from being such a big deal.

Please help me out here. I have a lack of understanding about "cream soup". Does that mean like a can of Tomato Soup made with milk? Does it mean black bean Soup that has been puréed! What about pea soup or broccoli cheese soup that has been puréed?

I believe "creamed" is blended, not the addition of cream/milk. At least that's what it means to me, 7 days post-op and hoping to move to puréed foods later this week!!

GeTnBackuP reacted to livvsmum in 4 Years Surgiverary with Progress Pics
Wow! My 4 year surgiversary came and went this past week! I lost a total of 130 (136 pounds as of today) pounds, which puts me at 2 pounds above my lowest post-sleeve weight of 124 pounds, and I'm ok with that!
I remember in the first 2years post op feeling like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, for me to wake up one morning and have gained all the weight back. But I'm realizing now that I've maintained this new normal for 4 years. That is significant! That is not a fad; that is not a passing whim; that is a new normal.
Do you know how I knew this for sure? I didn't even realize it had been 4 years since my surgery this month until someone else said something. I'm no longer counting the pounds lost (I actually needed a calculator for this post) and I'm no longer counting the months post op. In fact there are a lot of days I forget altogether that I had surgery.
It's not that I'm not eating the bariatric diet or that I'm doing what I want. It's just a perspective change. I still use myfitness pal nearly every day to count my carbs and my Protein and my Water, but I know that this keeps me honest and accountable. I don't eat whatever I want. I probably never do. But I no longer avoid social settings where there might be food, I no longer stress if I have 18 peanut halves instead of 17. I no longer hate myself for wearing a 6 instead of a 4.
It took a whole lot of freaking emotional work, 4 years of weekly therapy, and a lot of willingness to put in the time and energy to change.
For those of you looking for some updated progress pics, here is me from a girls' week we just had in Mexico. I basically spent the week in a string bikni which is not something I ever thought I would do. Were there girls that looked way more amazing than I did? Hell yes! But they most likely did not birth 4 children or torture their bodies through ganing and losing 130 pounds. A body doesn't just forgive you for that. You live with the saggy skin in spots, with the stretchmarks on the otherwise flat stomach because that is life and not because you have failed. It is because you've lived, and struggled, and won, and left when you needed to leave, and stayed when you needed to stay, and you demanded more from yourself and you demanded better.

Hi Trixie, I am 4 years out and not happy with my slow continuous weight gain. One of the active Lap Band support groups would be Dr. Fowler at Castle Hospital. His people used to post a lot on this website but have since petered out. I had my band done by Dr. Lapschies at Queens's, but I don't think they have a support group any more.
If you ever want to walk, especially on Sunday's, give me a call. I am always looking for people and places to walk. My cell phone# is 383-3820 or my work phone is 971-7199.
