Totally understand that! Mine will eat 3 donuts in one day, directly from a box of cheeze its, in front of me. I suggested he have a small portion in a bowl. He acts like I'm crazy. He can eat and eat, he hasn't slowed down with my surgery. I was hoping it would make him more conscious of how he eats. It's torture for me.

My gas is bad in the evenings because I hold it all day. There is a buildup and I notice relief when I am able to freely expel it. My point is that its not uncontrollable.

Yes, I have a shake a day, only because even after 6 months, I find it difficult to actually consume 80-100 grams of Protein via food, therefore I rely pretty heavily on my shake.

I think you can't go wrong following a nutrition first outlook. no need to follow "diet plans". ask yourself if this gives you the highest number of nutrients? Post RNY nutrient dense food is critical. I don't avoid carbs, about 35% of my diet is nutrient dense carbs like fruits and vegetables, seeds, sometimes Beans etc. 40% is Protein (critical post op) and the remainder are healthy fats like salmon and avocado, nuts.
I avoid processed foods and simple carbs because they have little nutritional value. post op there isn't a lot of real estate in your stomach so nutrient dense food needs to take priority.
Now that I'm in maintenance and eating more. I may have the occasional simple carb choice...but i treat it like a condiment in terms of portion.

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of your stomach that process fat and sugars has been cut away. Therefore consuming this type of food can lead to dumping syndrome. But after around a year post-op, your intestines figure out something is wrong and step up to the plate and begin to process this type of food.
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes.
There are two phases to weight loss surgery, the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. The goals of each phase and the approach used to achieve those goals are different. The low carb approach may be applicable during the maintenance phase but if you want to lose the weight stick to the program requirements given by your surgeon. Weight loss is achieved by meal volume control during the weight loss phase.

I don't see why you can't try it. I use Premier Protein as Creamer in my coffee which comes out of my Keurig at 190 degrees. I also make my own hot chocolate Protein powder....powdered skim milk, Syntrax vanilla Protein Powder, Unjury unflavored protein powder, Ghirardelli unsweetened cocoa and Monk Fruit sweetener to taste. Just add hot Water. Mmmmmmm. And a bit of Torani almond Syrup makes it Mmmmmm Mmmmmmm.

I used to worry about the expense of some of this stuff. Ultimately, I find that I eat so little, that anything is affordable. So I decided to concentrate on eating well rather than what I was spending. good luck.

ZumbaMami reacted to Berry78 in How much weight did everyone loss within the first month???
Sleever females lose about 15-20 lbs the first month. Bypass peeps usually lose a bit more.
The rule of thumb is we lose about a hundred or 120 pounds the first year, which averages out to 10 a month. The first few months are more, then it slows down.
There are always exceptions, but it gives you an idea.

You're doing great! There's something called the "third week stall" that almost all of us go through- please don't let it get you down. Weight loss is not linear and this is the first of many stalls you will likely encounter.

Also, try not to compare yourself to others- everyone loses at their own pace, men lose faster than women, very obese people lose faster than lightweights, etc.

As someone else on here likes to continually point out- when is the last time you lost 23 pounds in a month? Never?

    Congratulations on your success.

I never went into chat rooms or forums -- it wasn't my thing. I was seriously concerned though when I came on here yesterday to a "support forum" and read where someone said if they had a 9 mm gun they would shoot the other person in the head....! I don't believe that the keyboard and anonymity is free reign for people to be abusive. I think that's cowardly!!!

Thank you all for your honest answers and welcoming behavior. I know I'm here for me, and I won't use the excuse that "They're mean so I can't go there" as a reason to fall. I'm in, I'm staying and I'm taking no prisoners, except that emotional eater inside me. I plan on making it this time, no matter what.

Sometimes, support can include "serious negativity". A black and white view of the world is not healthy, and seeing feedback that makes you uncomfortable as solely "negative" might make it harder for you to recognize and implement good advice. I know there is a lot of immaturity and some people may be downright mean but sometimes negativity may be important.
For example, if you post here that you're afraid you ruined your surgery because you ate a whole pizza, you'll likely get some negative feedback. This is because many of us (myself included) are subjected to a litany of idiotic classes by our insurance companies about diet. Moments of weakness are understandable but the answer isn't to baby people, the answer is to light a fire under people's butts to get them to make the necessary changes to make this surgery a success.

Ok, let's separate out the different time frames.
6 or more months preop: As referenced above, it's to keep calories in check and get some weight loss started. If you can control caloric consumption while eating fat, I don't see a problem with it.
Liver shrink diet: Needs to be a low fat AND low carbohydrate to be sure that liver has shrunken sufficiently to make a safe procedure.
Postop: Back to keeping calories in check. Ideal weight loss happens somewhere between 800-1200 calories for the year or two after surgery. The first couple months postop it's almost impossible to get "too many" calories. After that, you have to start watching.

I had that same question when I entered this process. I don't "believe" in eating low fat for exactly the reasons you mentioned (reduces satiety thus leading to more general eating, low fat foods have other additives and chemicals, they contort the food unnaturally to make them low-fat, etc.).

I pushed back with my doctor and nutritionist and finally got the explanation you guessed. The aim is to help keep overall calories down rather than being a problem with fat as a general macronutrient.

I have not made an effort post-op to limit my fat intake whatsoever. I'm not going out of my way to eat extra fat necessarily, but I'm ensuring that the Proteins I eat are fully satisfying and filling with fats added as needed. I do strictly limit carbs. I've had great weight loss progress. I haven't had much trouble sticking to the food plan which I attribute to eating enough fat to keep me satisfied.

Good luck!! I'm 2 months post-op. It's hard work but SO worth it!

Hi all. I had my surgery consult last week and will be doing 6 months of supervised weight management in preparation for the surgery (RNY bypass). The guidelines the nutritionist gave me for eating during this phase included eating 60-80 grams of Protein per day and eating low fat. (Low carb was not included as a guideline but avoiding processed carbs, flour, sugar, etc. was.)
Could someone let me know the rationale for eating low fat, both during this time period and following the surgery? Up to this point, during periods in which I have been feeling my best, losing significant amounts of weight, and managing my blood sugar levels well (I have type 2 diabetes), I have eaten a whole-foods, low carb diet focusing on eating by hunger and satiety rather than counting calories, and my diet has been high in fat and protein. Not in fried foods and such, being that I wasn't eating things like french fries or breaded foods, but I was eating full-fat cheese or yogurt, for example--whole foods. The fat increased satiety and helped slow the release of glucose. It feels strange to me when I'm focusing on my health to buy non-fat or low-fat versions of foods that may have additives or other ingredients to compensate for the removal of fat, and so I'm struggling a bit. If I better understood why, then I wouldn't struggle quite so much.
Is it simply that a gram of fat has more calories that a gram of protein or carbohydrate, and the thinking is that low fat eating will lower calories? Or does fat promote sliding through the pouch? I thought dumping syndrome was more related to sugar/high carb foods, but perhaps I am wrong?
Thanks so much for any information!

I was sleeved on 8/14 & just got home from my 2 week post-op with the surgeon. Excited to see I am down 20 lbs in two weeks. Even more excited to start purees and soft foods today!!!! That first bite of cottage cheese was delectable.
The first 10 days were rough for me, but my body has seemed to have adjusted somewhat. I'm feeling a lot better, almost like this may just be worth it. (If you had asked me on day 10, I probably would have chewed your head off--either from anger or hunger.)
Here's to the next phase of my journey!
