I have to agree with the good doctor above that weight loss surgery is the only sure way to cure diabetes. I also heard the report on the news about the study that was done over a three year period. Of the three patients in the study, one was kept on meds and diet, one had the lapband and the third the gastric sleeve. Only the two who had the surgery lost a dramatic amount of weight and no longer were on diabetic meds and the third one on the diet was still diabetic, still overweight and still on meds. So the study proved that surgery is the only sure way to cure diabetes. I am a type 2 diabetic, 3-1/2 months out from surgery and I no longer use insulin and only one metformin in the morning. My A1c one month after surgery went down from 8.9 to 7.2...my next blood work is in May at which time if my readings are under 6, my doctor will take me off the metformin too. Congratulations Baby Sheldon...you are an inspiration.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! I'm an eye doctor and I absolutely go through the roof when my patients come back and tell me they are no longer diabetic! This is SO AWESOME for you, your health, your families, your LIVES!
Not sure if anyone was watching/reading the news in the last few weeks, but a long-term study was just published showing how bariatric surgery was much more effective at controlling and/or eliminating diabetes than medications. We all figured this out already, of course, but hopefully insurance companies will take this new information and stop getting in the way of people who just want to be healthy.
    Blessings to all!

I think there is definitely a reason for 2 doughnuts buried in the fact that you've lost 99lbs. A bit of early celebration, perhaps? I can't say whether doughnuts were a good choice or bad..(after all, what I think doesn't matter!). But it is VERY important for you to really analyze why you ate the doughnuts.
Like the characters on Independence Day..(smoking those cigars was the best thing they could do in their situation prior to blowing the alien mothership and themselves up).. maybe there was a very good reason for you to do something that may appear to others to be self sabotage.
I've eaten cake, ice cream, fudge, banana bread, pizza, and cupcake since surgery. In every case, I knew what I was doing, and why I was doing it. In no case did I have more than a small bite... (except the pizza). My choices weren't wrong.. and yours might not be either. Just make sure that you have a distinct reason for what you do.
Preop, if someone asked why I ate something, there never was a good reason.. I was "hungry", or "*shrug* just because...". I'm reformulating my relationship with food, so I can tell you EXACTLY WHY I eat anything, and that is the difference between then and now. (And.. the WHY.. has to be good! A craving is a terrible reason to give in to temptation.)
I visited Mackinac Island this summer. So I ate fudge. It wasn't even very good.. but I was on Mackinac, and that's what you DO! Lol! For me, that's a good reason. For someone else, it wouldn't be.

For me it was/is (simple) carbs. Sweets don't really tempt me at all.

I had mashed potatoes a couple times and I regret that now. IMO the particular danger with carbs in addition to the addiction principles, is the fact that it passes so easily in our sleeve. So you can eat more of that than you can of "real" food, and it doesn't really keep you full.

Still, I refuse to beat myself up about it- it happened, I am human, and I will remain positive and try my best not to let it happen again. And if it happens- oh well, my body will likely punish me for it and that punishment is sufficient.

I think everyone has to figure out things for themselves and for some of us that requires trial and error. I've had to throw up a couple times to figure out what my limits are in terms of quantity of food. In some cases, for certain foods, that is LESS than the doctor allows. We are all different- what works for me may not work for you, "it takes Diff'rent Strokes to move the world!"

Today I have been snacking like no ones business, kind of. Today I had a sandwich. It was a mini sandwich that took me the day to eat, I hate it in halves. I then ate fruit and snacked on two Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I did not need them but they were awesome! I have still been losing weight and I have been being careful, but today was crazy. I will not punish myself but I will also continue to watch my portions, exercise and LIVE!

Just wanted to introduce myself and share my progress with you all. My name is Melissa, I'm 41 years old and I had the gastric sleeve. I researched for months before deciding on a surgeon and then my PCP (my regular physician) researched as well. She was all for my using Dr Maytorena through Long Term WLS in Tijuana. My PCP was extremely pleased with the professionalism, the records I brought back to her including every test they ran, every medication i was given and the xray cd showing my leak test. She even says when I go back there for a visit I have to take her with me. Haha! I had an amazing experience overall. The facility was the cleanest I've been in, the staff was absolutely wonderful and took great care of me. I have not had any issues at all since coming home and my coordinator Ruben and Dr Jorge Maytorena have both checked on me since I've been home. I am down 50 pounds since the surgery May 29th and a total of 64 overall since preop. If you are considering WLS I would definitely recommend them. Below is a collage showing before photos on the left and my current progress on the right. I am ecstatic to see where this journey takes me! If you are researching surgeons and have questions about my personal experience I would love to chat. [emoji4]

I am having surgery August 16th. I am a single mom of 8 and my youngest has special needs. I do struggle with anxiety about having this done and not being there for a few days for them; however, I keep reminding myself this will allow me the opportunity to become a better mom for them, a healthier mom. So many emotions.
